- How to plaster a plasterboard/drywall board wall - In this simple beginners guide, I show how to apply plaster/drywall stop bead, how to apply scrim tape, how to mix plaster, how to apply two coats of plaster, how to plaster an outside 45 degree corner, and how to polish and finish plaster. I also show how to plaster into small gaps using different tools. In my other video 'how to plaster a wall' I show how to plaster onto an old wall using PVA on the wall prior to plastering (see links below).

Mate we ran out of money doing the Appartment, so we ended up doing this stuff ourselves. So guys like you have being apsolutly amazing, thank very much!
Really glad the vids have helped you out. Good luck with the apartment and thanks for watching!
Hi, I'm a site plasterer.I personally think it's a good DIY video. It's clear & informative for most DIY enthusiasts to follow.Personally I always bed my beads with plaster which I'm using & on very large areas I'll staple the bead.Remember every1 is different, and people alter techniques so it works for them .I see people on site constantly with different techniques but obtaining the same goal.Again being different, that area could have been taped & jointed & probably easier for most DIYers to achieve a good finish, however it's a plastering video for DIY enthusiasts and everyone needs a starting point.
Hi Nicholas, thanks for the feedback. As you say it is intended as a beginners video not to showcase master plastering (which I couldn't anyway!).I think people often get het up on how plaster is applied, but there are different methods so each to their own I say. The important thing is that 2 good coats of plaster go on which will be durable and finished to the required standard. Good luck and thanks for watching!
As a DIYer, I found this really helpful and you explain it in a way that makes it easy to follow. Thanks!
Thanks for the feedback James. Really pleased the video helped. Good luck with your projects and thanks for watching!
I've got to say thanks. I followed your video the first time I plastered a wall about 3 years ago and got great results. Since then, I've always popped back for a refresher when ever I've been tasked with this daunting job, and always get the same great results. Either I'm a master plasterer and I just never found my calling, or more likely, your instruction is really on point and very clear. Thanks Pouse.
Glad the video was useful 👍
This is one of the best videos yet for basic plastering, straight to the point. love it, thanks
Thanks for the feedback. A link to my plastering playlist is here if you want more - ua-cam.com/play/PL2-FHRIF3qm9ej6TMNeBO6mgAWv5aCB1F.html
My plasterer let me down, didnt bother answering my texts. So after watching the vids i gave it a go. Bit tricky to get used to at first but i did 4 walls in a day and have a really nice smooth finish. Doing the other wall and ceiling tomorrow. Saved myself £350 by doing it myself thanks to your video and happy ive done it myself and gained experience and it looks good
Marc, that's great news. 4 walls is really good going, nice work! Good luck with the rest of it and while you're arms are aching, just think of the money you're saving. Thanks for watching!
Good man!
A good video for beginners and DIYers. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed the video Peter. Thanks for the feedback and thanks for watching. Good luck with your project!
My old man was the best plasterer ive ever come across, no longer around to ask his advice but everything you said and did on this was exactly how he used to do it. Spot on mate, thanks heaps.
Sorry to hear about your dad. Thanks for sharing your experience 👍
This is the best explanation I've seen for complete beginners. Nice and clear and a logical progression . Thanks.
Thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you enjoyed the pace and style of the video. Good luck with the plastering and thanks or watching!
Excellent! I was scared off by the idea that it's easy to overwork the plaster... but by building up in layers... cool 😎
Nice one Matt. Thanks for watching!
Superb tuition, iv'e watched quite a few video's on plastering now and yours is by far the most informative, i certainly feel more confident about making a good job myself, keep up the good work.
Thanks for the feedback Deryk, plenty more to come. Thanks for watching!
excellent tutorial thank you. 50 years I worked in the construction industry and never managed to master plastering when it came to small repairs and making good. Now I know why ...!
Thanks for the feedback John and thanks for watching!
Thank you for your professional advice.
1st time plastering after seeing you video . Full walls came out spot on . Thanks again 👍🏼
Possibly my new fave channel. Top work mate. 👍🏾
Really appreciate your great feedback. Thanks for watching.
get that architrave off ffs
Not always possible on site when other trades have been in. Client would of had the chippies round first putting the frames in. Didn't want them to come back after so they put the architraves and skirting in. Nothing difficult for a decent plasterer to sort out. Better than the cowboys who go straight over the door frame with skim and leave you the task of knocking it off and pulling finished plaster off the walls after
Cant for the life of me work out why they do it!
I grew up in in a house with one-piece metal door frames that were held on with sliding brackets that nailed into the framing, so you had to plaster around them. The plastering was usually neat enough that they looked fine, but it tended to crack if you slammed the door. I think they stopped using frames like that (at least in the USA) in the 1960s.
You would make a good lecturer mate. I am a painter and sometimes need to repair plaster so good lesson and instruction, well explained. Cheers
Thanks for the feedback Steven. Glad the vid helped. Good luck with the patching up and thanks for watching!
Excellent. Thank you for explaining the dark of art of plastering.
No problem, glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching!
Been struggling to find a plasterer to skim the bathroom, but now having watched this, I'm pretty confident I can give it a go! You make it look so easy
Best of luck with it Lee and thanks for watching.
A Welsh plasterer that actually works? I'm doing up a gaff in The 'Port but every plasterer was always' about to go on holiday ' so I gave up and am doing it myself. Your videos are the best- and I think I've watched them all, but the American woman' seejanedrill' explained the trowel movements and angles and hawk techniques the best. You do a better job explaining in this video than your others though. So huge thanks! It's been going really well and I finally have flat walls in the kitchen area. I'm dead chuffed and really enjoying it, not to mention saving a bomb, but I won't be giving up the day job yet. Had a tricky spot but the tongue and gurning tip saved the day!
Hi again, glad to hear the videos are helping you out. It's not my day job either but like you has saved me a lot of money over the years. When you say the port, you mean Newport? Good luck with the property, appreciate the feedback and thanks for watching. Good luck and keep it up!
POUSE around the HOUSE
Yeah, the Newport invasion begins! Goldie Looking Chain now owe me a fiver... 😉 Trading the New Forest for Brecon Beacons and Gower. And a house that's half the price of a beach hut down here.... Oh, and friendly neighbours. Not used to that one!
Very clear instructions and steps and agree it is an art form. Thank you.
For a DIYer like myself I find the videos on this channel brilliant. The presenter is easy to follow and makes it sound simple to do. This in turn makes something that might be daunting to something that is achievable.
Thank you very much for your kind words and thanks for watching.
Excellent video, haven't plastered in years and could not remember the work flow of skimming.
Some of the newer videos seem to be professionals showing off, the ones I watched 5 years ago when I first skimmed a room seem to be far more clear.
The most inspirational one was the guy with his little girl bringing him tea between coats, alas no where to be found now.
Thanks for a good instructional video
I'll have to train my daughter to do the same! Thanks for watching and best of luck with the plastering.
Superb. Watched a few 'Beginners Guide' videos where it is assumed that you have a basic set of plastering skills already. This was very clear and informative, cheers!
Hi Paul, glad you found the video useful. I try my best to break it down and I'm sure I'm teaching some people to suck eggs! But I try to make a range of videos from beginner to advanced so something for everyone. It's just there's only so many hours in a working week to fit them in! Please subscribe for regular videos. Good luck with your projects, let me know how you get on. Thanks for the feedback and thanks for watching!
Excellent. Thanks for all the details that many other video makers just assume we should know.
No problem Colin, glad the video helped. I always try to cover everything in my videos no matter how basic or advanced, although I sometimes forget. I always welcome a reminder from viewers if I leave something out! Best of luck with your project and thanks for watching!
Fantastic simple straightforward plastering for beginners. No glossy crap to make the video longer. Much appreciated. Keep up the good work.. and best of luck
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Great video and great explanations. You've helped convince me that I can actually do this...
Hi Kent, that's great news, go for it. Good luck and thanks for watching!

That's great, glad the video helped. Good luck and thanks for watching!
Thanks You Pause, your videos are so helpful, I've learned a great deal from you so far. I'm a decorator by trade but have found your videos have helped me out in different areas in many occasions. Much appreciated 👍

POUSE around the HOUSE No worries mate, credit where credit is due 👍
looking at your t-shirt brought back some nice memories of visiting Thailand!
Good times! That t-shirt has seen better days but it's been good to me. Thanks for watching!
Great tutorial, thank you. I haven't plastererd wall for years so a recap is very important for someone with the memory of a goldfish;)
Hope it went well 👍
Thanks great tips now I know how to get a great finish not just ok 👌
Hi Jaime, hopefully that will be the case! Gad you enjoyed the video. Good luck with your project and thanks for watching!
You're 5 star and thank you for well demo and well explained
Thanks for the feedback and thanks for watching!
After watching your video I think I will have a go at plastering. You make it look so easy. Thanks for sharing. 👍
Good man, give it a go. Good luck with it and thanks for watching!
POUSE around the HOUSE just did the plastering and it looks pretty good. Thanks for the help with the video. 👍
Thank you for this. I've plastered a lot of our walls with lime plaster, which is very different. I've a plasterboard internal wall to do now and this has helped me understand the gear I need and the plaster product to use, not to mention differences in technique. Excellent :D
Glad to have helped. Best of luck with it!
Great job of explaining the process in simple terms. Really informative for a DIY renovator like myself.
Thank for the feedback Clive.
I'm on the third video on this now and it's so very well explained, the right pace, etc.
Glad to help 👍
Another excellent tutorial.
Thanks for the feedback Glenn and thanks for watching!
Superb instructions. About to do my first plastering job! Many thanks.
Great set of video's Pouse. Thanks very much for posting these....from a beginner!! I'll get there eventually. Cheers R.
Thanks for the feedback Rob. Glad you enjoy the vids and find them useful. Please subscribe for regular videos. You'll definitely get there, we all start somewhere. Good luck with your projects, let me know how you get on and thanks for watching!
Watched this the other day as my wife wanted are lads rooms plastered. I said I not paying have it done I will try it. Just finished one wall for my first attempt and pretty happy with it. Made fair bit of mess mind
Good effort, well done. Yes it's a messy trade but you will get cleaner with practice. Good luck and thanks for watching!
Tight? You don't know me. Spent alot on the house this month. Saving little bit helps get rest done. Not that its any of you business. Fucking idiot.
it was just a joke, sorry if i ruffled your feathers...
This channel is to help people learn new skills and save money in the process so good on you hawk40gtx! As for Kevin I think he's a bit of a wind up. I get it all the time on here, but I welcome abuse and criticism as I do praise! Good luck to both of you and thanks for watching!
british 'banter' :D
Hi
I'll do just about any sort of DIY apart from electrics (nasty, scary stuff). However, I've never done plastering before and I was a bit worried about it but your video has made it very clear so I'm going to have a go.
Thank you very much.
Best of luck with it!
Thank you..... I plastered my own wall and ir looks fab xxx
Thank you so much! I managed to plaster the walls and ceiling in my gym I now understand why they charge so much! Looks quite smooth anyway thanks
Well done, great news, glad to have helped. Thanks for watching!
Excellent video mate; very clear, and you explain the techniques in detail especially the movements - brilliant.
Excellent videos. Really well done. Thank you.
Thanks for the feedback, glad you enjoy the vids. Thanks for watching!
Ace videos Pouse - thanks. I have followed your instructions for a few jobs I am currently undertaking on a conservatory I have put together - the plastering is next. The explanations in these videos is an excellent help. Cheers
Thanks for the feedback Neil. Be sure to check out my other plastering vids as you may find they help. But by all means watch all my videos! Best of luck with the project.
Interesting and not in any way dull! I gotta plaster a small wall later and am going to give it a go on the strength of this vid, which I have watched three times now. Cheers mate :-)
No problem Andy, hope it works out for you. Check out my other plastering videos (I have done a plastering playlist) which may also help. Thanks for watching!
I always come back to your videos for tips and wot not, Thanks for taking the time to impart your knowledge, they are helpful.
No problem. I am by know means an expert so always take a look at other channels to get a broad range of advice, but I will always do my best to simplify things for someone starting out. Thanks for the kind words Jim and thanks for watching.
@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE Yep i have watched a lot of them..a lot of yanks calling it "mud"...thing is i have done enough plastering now to be good at it but my finish can be hit and miss..so go back to basics and ty and find out where in the process i'm going wrong...loading the towel too much...pissing about with the first coat too much and not mixing to the right consistency which is crucial are the culprits ...It really is an art and really satisfying when done to a nice finishl...your vids are to the point,so again cheers...I'm doing my house at the moment...Not near plymouth are you Pouse? i could do with a hand. 😂
Best plastering a wall video I’ve seen, very helpful, now I’ve got to take the plunge and do one myself 😬 Thank you for the great explanation!
I'v always done my own DIY, but always avoided plastering as it looks like one of them tricky jobs there's a knack too.... I fancy I'd bodge too many walls practising before I got to a good enough standard. I'll just a stick to bodging everything else for now. Nice job.
Steve I have been a builder all my life and would only attempt plastering in dire circumstances . THEN I found the secret which makes it simple , it tells you on the bag. Start with small walls . Say you have a wall 2m2 you will need 6 litres of plaster to plaster it 3mm thick . Do it in three coats . For each coat you will 1 litre of water, mix in plaster until the right consistency , just concentrate on getting it to cover the wall . You will think there is not enough plaster ,so put it on very thin . Then wash all your tools off and do it again , 1 litre of water plaster to suit and just cover the wall again . This time it will be a lot easier and you may even have a bit left , but start to flatten out and use all the plaster . Then do the third coat exactly the same way , and trowel up . I always put far too much plaster on the walls and it was a nightmare . Nobody ever tells you how much you need .Give it a go , measure area of wall , halve it and call it litres ,three coats with that amount of water in each mix . Then when you have done that your confidence will grow , but don't tell anyone the secret .
Great tutorial. Will put this to practice sealing over a recently bricked up door way. Good tips should help me get the job done well.
Thanks for watching 👍
Great vid...Well explained...Thanks for making it helped me loads..Nige UK
Thanks for the feedback, glad it helped. Thanks for watching.
Actaully a good video other ones i watch they dont tell you how much to mix or anything. Good vid very informative cheers

Thanks for the feedback and thanks for watching. Best of luck!
Thank you for your time and help.
No problem, thanks for watching.
Very good video, I have just signed myself up to re plaster boarding my 2nd nursery bedroom and then filling in a hole in the wall we're the old boiler unit used to be. I was going to pay someone who charges £120 A DAY to come and do these but you know what I was in wickes today and had the inspiration to buy the pieces required and have a go myself... This should be fun, wish me luck? John
Hi John, that's great news good on you! Best of luck with it, let me know how you get on. Thanks for watching!
Thanks mate,I'm a joiner to trade but no spread, helped a lot, still not the best but better than last time, thanks again.
No problem, thank for watching and best of luck with it.
Thanks Pouse, I'm working on my property which needs some skimming every now and then. I watch this video each time :)
Glad to help. Plenty of other plastering videos under my plastering playlists if you need them. Thanks for watching Andrew.
Great set of plastering videos son very helpful
Thanks for the feedback, and thanks for watching!
Just got our next house that me and Mrs are going to need to renovate. These vids are brilliant help, subbed.
First class video, well done.
Thanks for the feedback Michael, and thanks for watching!
Dude you're awesome! Very entertaining and informative top marks matey!
Thanks for the feedback and thanks for watching!
I personally think these video are great. Like others have said, no bs & very step by step. My only 1 wee caveat is when we're doing a back to frame refurbed, the guys that do our plastering always prefer that they get in and bang the job out before we do our skirting and facings. Quicker, easier & less fiddly. Other than that great vids mate.
Thank you for the lessons you have demonstrated, as well as free ?
No problem, glad to help.
Just about to satrt my first go at plastering, your video came up and it was perfect help. Thanks mate.
No problem 👍
make it look so easy thanks for the clear instruction
No problem, thanks for watching!
No problem, thanks for watching!
No problem, thanks for watching!
Love watching your videos they are really helpful thanks
Glad you like them!
nice instructional video there, good job.
It would be a lot easier if you do not put the skirting and architrave on until you finish the plastering. less things to go around then👍
Thanks for the comment. I agree with what you say, but on this occasion the homeowner had already done the skirting and architrave before asking me to plaster the cupboard. No problem really though, just a bit more fiddly. Thanks for watching!
I loved this, Not yet up to doing my own plastering. Tried before and failed but have been inspired. Are you from Newport BTW?
I’ll be having a go of plastering a false chimney breast that I’ve built and I’ll be having you by my side at every step. Great video 👍🏻
You can watch all of my plastering vids here if that helps - ua-cam.com/video/3f90vww8Dzs/v-deo.html. Best of luck!
Really helpful starting plastering at collage and some teachers don't explain thing very well your other videos were helpful as well great videos
Glad to have helped Alex, although I'm not a plasterer by trade so worth listening to the teachers! Best of luck with the college.
@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE What is your trade, out if interest?
That's lush that is. Great teaching style. 👍👊
Thanks for the feedback and thanks for watching!
Great video mate, explained perfectly, one I'm going to keep in my bookmarked collection
Hi Dean, thanks for the kind words, glad you found the vid useful. I have plenty more plastering and DIY videos so check out my channel and subscribe for updates. Best of luck with the plastering and thanks for watching!
Thank you, easy to follow guide for my home DIY project.

Best video for plastering a wall.
Thanks for the feedback and good luck with the plastering!
Cheers for this mate, really well explained and at a great pace. your videos have been really helpful to me, doing my house up. keep up the good work !
Thanks for the great feedback Peter. Best of luck with the house and thanks for watching!
Thanks mate.......after watching your vid, even a numpty like me should be able to make a decent go of it.....all the best
see you have been to Thailand, i do six months in the UK and six months over there , good vid
Actually, I haven't, it was a tacky gift and I love it!
I’m in the middle of GCSEs atm but thinking about doing plastering in the future thanks for ur tips and videos
Dont
Plastering is hard work and once established you’ll be rolling in the bucks. Work with a pro for 3 or 4 years or longer to know the ropes. It will probably screw your body up though when in you 40’s onwards, but by then you’ll be retired and living in the south of France anyways. 👍🏻
Like this video .well explained mate.gonna give it a try on my extension
Good luck with it Geoff. If you're plastering over any old walls, try my other tutorial How to plaster a wall - ua-cam.com/video/LyngzAYIuZs/v-deo.htmlnd. Thanks for watching.
I am a painter a decorator and i come across some horrible plastering work, very messy in the corners and edges and just a terrible finish. i often have to go over with filler to get the right finish. let alone the mess some plasterers leave behind. this is top quality work and would be a pleasure to paint !
If you can piss you can paint
@Bellowloudly your right, I'm time served with no qualifications. Painting is a trade which takes a lot of time to be good and fast.. people come out of college now with qualifications more than I have , yet stick them on a artex ceiling glue and skim and there ticket means nothing.
Well explained, with no life story .👏👏
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Great video mate. Clear and simple!
Hi Gordon, thanks for the feedback and thanks for watching!
Nice, i did one coat in the past and got away with it but i will try the two as the worst that could happen is the trowel sticking to the wall lol . good vid cheers
Hi there, thanks for the feedback, good luck with your project and thanks for watching!
Really comprehensive instructional vid, thanks for posting. It was the 'polishing' I wasn't sure about/confident with, but you explained it really well. Thanks again!
No problem, thank you for the kind feedback. Best of luck with it, let me know how you get on. Thanks or watching!
Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!
Good lad! A clear and encouraging video. Just what I needed to have a go myself.
Best of luck with it!
Thanks mate this has helped me a lot 👍🏻
Hi Chris, glad to have helped. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for these videos, I plastered a wall earlier looks good considering its my first time, the only thing I struggled with was flipping lines, even when on the polishing bit I still get lines, took me ages to get the lines out doesn't help that I'm heavey handed and probaby pressing to hard, I suppose it's practice makes perfect, I got another wall too tomorrow, so I'll copy this video.
Thanks for the comment. Sometimes it can be due to a new trowel with sharp edges. If you use an older trowel or buy a 'part worn' trowel, it will help as the sharp edges will have been worn down. Hope that helps. Good luck!
Yep, really nice, well set out and easy to follow. I'm going to try it on a small area under the windows first. Ta!

Great video thanks, wish I'd seen it years ago.
Thanks David. Good luck with the plastering and thanks for watching!

Top bloke. Can't wait to get going...
Thanks for the feedback, and thanks for watching. Good luck with your projects!
Great help. Thanks a lot for the video! I'm gonna have a go! Cheers!
Hi Tommy, thanks for the feedback. Good lad for having a go, just start on a small wall, do some good prep first, have everything ready and you'll be fine. Good luck with the project and thanks for watching!
