A plasterer has let us down and after having no kitchen for the best part of 2 months we decided we'd give it a go ourselves. We've watched your video through a couple of times and today was d-day. It's gone surprisingly well! It's on and fairly even. We have a whole house to do so will no doubt improve as we do more. Mate I owe you a beer if I ever see you out. Having worked in the building trade all my life as a carpenter I can honestly say this is the best and most considerate plastering job I've seen, every house I've been on too I've had to knock snot of with an old chisel before fitting my skirting and sometimes around door openings to fit architraves.

@@acostin4004 hi, not sure i could give you any advice, as you , ive watched your video's, and you are very good.. i would alway's p.v.a 3 coats , the other tip i learnt, was to put a couple of bonding plaster in the first coat, or use plaster retarder. . but if it's to big an area for me , i get someone to help me lay on. hope that help's mate.

Build With A&E , no PVA prior plastering ?
@@georgegeorge9946 no need when going straight onto fresh, flat plasterboards and using either board finish or multi finish. You would pva over dried bonding coat or if skimming over mixed/finished surfaces. Only reason to pva on plaster board would be to slow down the drying time, which can be helpful for a beginner like me, or if you've a very large area to do
Must admit that small tool is a real find so multi purpose one of best tools any tradesmen should have
How do you keep those trainers so clean, they must be brand new!

Very clear, concise instructions but without the guff a lot of trades add in, in away to big themselves up,
You have 2 skills here..1 plastering & 2 explaining the various stages in an easy to understand way 👍. I would add however to those watching this video that fancy a crack at spreading, just be mindful that pro’s make any job look easy even if they don’t mean too. My suggestion before skimming a prominent wall, go grab a sheet of plasterboard and screw it to a basic timber frame, stand it up, then have a go at skimming the board following the steps shown in the excellent tutorial. Once you’ve got yourself a finish your happy with, then go and have a crack on your real wall. As mentioned in this video, don’t play around with the plaster too much as it’ll go tits up very quickly.
Regarding the advice of wearing a mask when mixing, I’d say it’s vital especially as these days we know the health problems associated with inhaling the fine dust. 40 years ago when started off as a labourer for 2 spreads before going on to become a spread myself, they had me using lime mixed in with a render scratch coat. When mixed inside it’d go up my nose & in my mouth and by christ did it burn. By the end of the day my nose was bleeding, however back then we didn’t understand the damage we were doing. This is probably the best skim tutorial I’ve seen. One other tip I’d give to a new diy’er, don’t try using a 16" hawk the size this fella’s using because even if you can hold it up with a gauge of plaster on, I guarantee you, unless your name is Arnie, your arm will drop off. Go with a 12" hawk & trowel to start with. Now go an play :)

I'm not sure a 12" trowel, I've just gone with a 14" and finding finishing a lot easier to get a flat finish than with the 12

You make plastering look soo easy and effortless, and a joy to watch. Do you actually have a school where people can come and learn from you first hand like some kind of 1 week course? I’d definitely sign up for it.
Just a word of note, usually when plastering a room you need to start with the ceiling first. For filming purposes we focused on just the wall for this video. I would learn on the job mate I know a few people who have done collage courses and don't learn much, they tell you you'll be able to plaster to a professional standard but you won't!

I'm a brickie first, who just picked up plastering skills along the way, and I find when I'm skimming boards, I can always achieve a good finish with just one coat, the finished job always looks good, and I've never had any complaints. However, if a wall requires a bonding coat first, then it would benefit from a second coat to achieve a smooth even finish (I find anyway). But for me, that method of plastering is where the real skill comes into it...And any tradesman worth his salt should be able to do a good job of skimming boards...Nice job BTW

It's definitely true that there's more than one way to plaster. I would always advocate applying two coats, but if it works for you and the end product is how you want it, then it's all good 👍🏻

For all the people that want to have a go but worried, do it, But watch videos like this. This tutorial is excellent, watch a few different videos pay real attention to the details how the trowel is held, the position and how the experienced person I laying it on. Watch a few different videos from different people, have a go, get disappointed with your first attempt (make sure it's somewhere unimportant) then come back and re-watch you will notice details you didn't the first time

I watched this three times and plastered my own 10m2 drywall for the first time. It's not too bad for an amateur, I just couldn't work fast enough so it set just a bit much between first and second coat. No fault of the video, really great and I like the conversational style that's actually full of useful details. Keep up the good work and I owe you one! One wall that is. Cheers.

As a fellow plasterer I can say this is good for beginners to learn from, as they say theirs more than one way to Skin a cat
Generally I fill out my beads and Scrim before skimming the rest, with board finish I usually lay one thick coat and flatten a few times, medi flex and dry trowel polish. Good tutorial. Props on the tips.
Your cameraman was spot on - with you in every movement, real skill and forward thinking.

This is the state of plastering these days, looks easy, dont want to dish out the coin, so I'll do it myself, and £600 for 20 sqm is like double what it should be
Nice video. I’m a plasterer myself and I think there’s a big difference between a plasterer and a Skimmer. A lot of “plasterers” nowadays can only skim onto flat board but are no good when there presented with a wall that needs floating out flat and then skimmed etc ...
Jake Townsend totally agree Jake. I’m a ‘hobby plasterer’ myself but been doing it for 8 years. Skimming onto board I suppose is the easiest place to start and get comfortable with hawk and trowel technique. But MF on varied, patched, filled in chases, imperfections, etc where the walls are less flat and uniform is a different challenge.
But for me I have found that it is the base coat, levelling and making flat where the real skill is. My kitchen walls are varied backgrounds and not plumb or straight. I’m dot and screening ready for bonding coat which is very different from skimming boards!!

Hey Paul, I like to use galvanised clout nails where possible, but you can also stick them on. Just make a small amount of plaster up beforehand and apply to the corner. Then squeeze the bead on, ensuring that the bead is as tight to the board as possible, and remove the excess plaster with your trowel.
Back in the day we'd be lucky to get 0-50p a Sq yard - we still left a top job and good wages at the end of the week .... How times change EH? :-)

Do u still plaster? I don't hear much about plastering here in the U.S. But it looks much slicker than drywall compound.
We get 4.50 or 5.00 per square meter in Ireland it's ok

Good video. Over the years iv realized theres no 1 technique of skimming. You may be taught 1 way but then slowly develope your own, easier/more logical way... E.g Iv seen guys use there gauge as a hawk or render with a piece of 4×2 lol

When u put first coat on n then thru each trowel are u increasing pressure or is firm pressure each time ??
Hey bud, you have to feel what the plaster needs. If it's drying off slightly then you can use a bit more pressure. So long as you are keeping the angle of the trowel shallow and not removing a lot of the plaster, you will be fine 😉

If I’m using same mix I now lay it down flat when 2nd coatings then my next trowel is with water b4 I was using water to late so it was nitemate trying to fill Its troweling up perfect now

Roughly how long do you need to leave between the first and second coats, and then the second and finishing? Thanks.
That will depend on how quickly your first coat is drying. If it’s a warm day you might want to be careful as the first coat still Needs to be wet enough ((sticky to touch with your finger)) to accept the second coat. That’s why you shouldn’t have the heating on. Cooler it is the more control you’ll have. If the first coat dries out before you put the second coat on, it will not be unified and might crack and peel off eventually. Things to bear in mind are temperature, speed and patience. Hope this helps.

Great tutorial!! I took everything you mentioned and demonstrated on board and I plucked up the courage to give it a really good go a friend of mine had a rusty old trowel and a hawk made out of a bit of old ply wood kicking around in his shed. my mam has just came home from a 12hr shift and I’ve managed to plaster the hallway stairs and landing area.. I could see she was totally shocked and overwhelmed she even started to cry, looking at what I’ve done! and now she’s kicking me out telling me I’ve completely fucked up her house and now she’s saying she needs to move. Cheers mam I done my best and told her I seen it on a UA-cam video I told her the lines and dents are supposed to be there and that’s part of the feature plastering job.. any good plasters out there to sort out the mess out that I’ve made? I now have no where to live. And she’s also kicking off because I used her dirty washing tub to mix the plaster in. Cheers I think I’ll take a professional course next time.🤦🏼♂️

If you mean ceiling... I’d normally do ceiling first but as it’s so small I’d just just the left over plaster from plastering walls. Saves mixing up again and also mix will be slightly stiffer for ceiling. Probably save 20 mins off the job without a compromise on quality

ryan Wakeley why? I’m not disagreeing with you just wondering why that is? Is it because the drips of plaster will land on the wall and make it more messy? I’m a diy plasterer.
@@rabbc007 yes mate it does make a mess of the walls but another reason say you had a room too do and you plaster all. The walls first you now have too cut that ceiling in atleast 4 times but if you plaster the ceiling first all you have too do is skim the ceiling and then whatever walls you plaster after you just cut in what you skim, just little things like that give you a better finish and make all the difference
Always plaster the ceilings first, then the walls.

@@BuildWithAE I tried one of the 14" Marshalltown Superflex trowels and by God, I'm not plastering expert but even I could tell how much better they are! What I did find is that when finishing you can 'catch' the plaster a lot easier if you didn't quite have the right angle and the corners of the trowel are rounded, so I found it slightly trickier to use but the application of plaster and the finish was incredible! Although, I think I'm going to struggle to paint as I think the paint will just stay on the roller :D!
