I feel like most travel videos now have a little too many funky transitions. Maybe it's just me but when I watch a movie and fall in love with it when it comes to cinematography, there is almost no transition in that movie and it's just mainly the tone and vibe of the movie, and storytelling.
Cezary Lopacinski At first I thought it'll be a Spanish name - smth like Cesare Lopez. At least that's how it sounds when he started his first attempts. :-)
I really enjoy this series! As an inspiring film maker who doesn't think of themselves as being a very creative person, seeing videos/clips from others really gives me inspiration. I can see what others do with their shots, try it out and add what I feel is my own spin things. Thanks for this series and keep up the great content!
Trey Marolf. Watchtower of Turkey is heavily inspired by Matty Brown. Matty spent more than 8 years developing his style, and he would do these transitions in camera, but he would only do them once it twice a video, and always with a story. Watchtower of Turkey us one of the few decent approaches to the style, but it doesn't add anything new to it, it just copies it, and Matty develops it making something new each time, because it's HIS style. It's hard to innovate when it's not your style, just find your thing and develop that.
I've been binge watching your videos for hours and furiously have been making notes haha. I'm very new to this filmmaking and your explanations are so clear and concise - your channel is a GODSEND. Thank you so much for putting in the time and effort to produce such quality content frequently, I'm looking forward to all the ones you do next! Loved this video especially - it's something that's been bothering me for a while seeing all these travel blogs with no real story.
I just love how you always emphasize story instead of just beautiful shots & presets that people use for their transitions. I'm guilty of using transitions but all of them are creating on my own. Going to send a couple of my films, hopefully I can get some feedback on what to correct & improve on 🙂
I think that's what sets apart a great videographer from the crowd of people who have a camera, crazy transitions, and cool music. This video put my thoughts into words!
Matti! TF feedback is awesome and very original in my opinion. I agree there is a time and a place for everything regarding these trendy transitions. Thanks for reinforcing the power of story.
I think a lot of this has less to do with the transitions and more about not preparing for your shoot. As someone who is relatively new to the video world, I often find with my vlogs that when I sit down to edit and my story is missing something or I didn't think something out enough before hand... in just screwed and my story ends up feeling patchy. I can see this happening with travel videos a lot if you're not planning what that storyline is going to be. But I just filmed a test travel vlog of a day trip to Jasper so we'll see how I made out! Anyone on here have any tips for preparing before you shoot travel vlogs(or any kind of vlog for that matter)?
1. I actually try to have a rough idea what the video will look like before I even start the trip. I list the things and activities I have planned or am likely to do on the trip and select the most interesting ones. After that I try to figure what are the kind of shots that tell the story of that activity the best. I then list the shots I'm not likely to get if I just shoot impromptu FPV shots all the time and list those. These often include tripod shots that need to be set up, close up detail shots that are easy to forget, scenes that need multiple angles of single action etc. Making sure to get these shots helps a lot. 2. If I'm traveling with other people I make sure that as many people as possible have a camera and some assignment from me. Of course they need to be willing to help and have a basic shooting vision and skill. I give these people some easy to follow instructions about the gear and tips what/how to shoot. This is helpful especially if you have multiple cameras you can't use at the same time anyway (ie. DSLR + point and shoot + drone + GoPro). 3. I plan how I'm going to carry all my gear and make sure everything is organized. This way I will not miss an opportunity if something interesting happens suddenly. I have a GoPro mounted to my backpack strap all the time so it takes me less than two seconds to start shooting at any given moment. Then I also have a good point and shoot in my pocket if need some better quality but don't have time to take out my bigger camera and change to the right lens. 4. I shoot a lot. It's better to have too much footage than too little footage. Also I try to not shoot only random single clips of a single subject. It's hard to tell a story with single shots that are not related to each other. I always want to have enough shots to build at least 3-shot mini scenes of every subject. I hope these tips help :)
Adventuregrapher wow! Thank you so much for the detailed answer! This is awesome! It's the kind of stuff that I have definitely assumed would make the video better but is way easier to think of than to actually do. Maybe if I decide to do more travel films I need to turn your list into a checklist!
Yes guilty! I think that everyone is trying to show off their skills and we tend to forget to tell a story... I also feel it's not always easy to tell a story... it takes preparation and thought! #WeKeepLearning p.s. not everyone has a girlfriend to tell a story about hahaha 😂
In my opinion it is better to document and build around it.Continuous recording and a lot of footage with some good editing to create a story. Life gives us a story and we just put the pieces together.
Literally my las video is exactly what you are saying about fancy transitions and no story telling...I'll admit it! It does become an issue when putting together a video and not knowing what to put next but having good intentions of bringing quality work to the best of your abilities. Thank you for helping me understand what storytelling entails! I will definitely be practicing my storytelling for the future.
You guys are awesome. This helps us beginner filmmakers to understand how to make great films and also you guys are helping small filmmakers to get more exposure. Great work guys.. 👍😊
I've noticed early on that some of my most cinematic videos got the least amount of likes and learned to simply focus on the story. I use trendy transitions on client projects because that's all they like but on my stuff I do my own style. Great advice
This somehow appeared on my list of recommended videos. Good thing I watched it out of curiosity, I learned something new and I don't even make travel videos. The idea shared is useful in a lot of other things. When creating something, the story or the idea definitely counts more than fancy ways of showing them. Pretty similar to how delicious food can be eaten on its own, but condiments are just extras to enhance an already good flavor.
I completely agree. The challenge I think most people have is not being interesting enough to carry the story of a video/vlog/movie. So they rely on cinematography instead. I always feel that iss my problem when making vlogs or travel videos. Kinda sucks because becoming interesting is way more difficult than filming and editing.
this is what happens a lot. i saw some people use too much transitions (plus slow mos..) and they forget to put the story in the video. thank you for this video it's very informative!
I can relate to this! When I first started to get back into making videos, all I wanted to learn to do were the fancy transitions! And I found that it ends up exactly how you said! Just a distraction. I think if you use them well, a fancy transition can add a lot, but if you use them too much, it takes away way more from your film.
The people, the culture, yourself, how you interact and react to them. If you're alone, then mostly the main character is you, so you'll need to talk to your viewers or be really good at showing the story visually.
A story is important - no questions asked. But often when you go to a new place which you don't know well and are not sure of what to expect, I think it's natural that you're trying to capture as much footage as possible so you have something to chose from once you're back at home ready for editing. It's great to have your story set as you shoot, but often you have to resort to being creative in making a story out of what you've captured.
Man, you made my day. Thank you for bringing this up. I was really trying to put and study those transitions, but afterwards, i found my video losing its drama, not serving its purpose... Maybe ill just stick with my plan. Thanks.
i'm so agree with you, there's a lot of filmmaker or content creator who has used much fancy transition and fancy color graded but there's no story to tell, especially in my country. but sadly, that kind of the video is more in demand than those who have strong storytelling. cool techniques editing is more demand than a video with strong story telling in my country.
Thanks for the tips! I don't really use any fancy transitions just straight cuts. But I am new to creating films with footage and I never thought about "building a story" I can definitely see how I could improve my future recordings by incorporating more character into the shots!
So on point with this message! I experimented with them in a couple vids but when EVERYONE is doing the same thing it just gets a bit cringeworthy. I used a zoom in and a zoom out in quick succession in my latest vid to take you on board a kayak to see some cool technology but then straight back out again so it had a reason and purpose. Otherwise, simple cuts are simply the least distracting option!!
I think its time to change our point of view and time to see the reality and leaving those fancy transitions :) Thanks for the advice man. I didn't realize this idea would probably make my videos better!!!!
Very inspiring sir! I like the tips and the focus on story, thanks and keep on keeping' on. I just started following you and it's getting me pumped to get some of my work out there. My channel just started 5 minutes ago and I've put up two short edits, and it feels good as a new videographer making the transition from electrician life!
Ngl I'm a sucker for every single trick in the book for doing travel videos. I can only really do these types of videos when I go on holiday, it's hard to come up with a narrative thinking about what to do next whilst trying to relax and enjoy going to a new place. When I get back and watch the footage back it always feels empty making me hate the final video
I haven't seen these videos and don't know if they were meant to be anything other than exhibiting places and whatnot, but he really has a point. Maybe the first few videos that used these transitions were super cool and didn't need any kind of narrative, but everyone can do these now, and it's distractingly boring when the video relies on these transitions. I'd like to see a video that really showcases a place, not just by transition cutting to some electronic pop beat with slow mos and speed ramps. KEEP FILM ALIVE!!!
Visual Anthony People care because they see basically a bland copy of what has been produced thousands of times before. It's a trend similar to autotune in pop music. At the beginning it's new and fresh, later it's getting annoying and uncreative
German Forero You're exactly right. I was wondering if anyone else noticed that. Sam makes very cool content but yes, he is not the originator as most people think.
Incredible video man! Thanks for all the tips! As a classically trained musician who wants to learn more about filmmaking and storytelling, this was huge! =)
I had a question if you have mediocre shots because you were an amateur and now you have to stitch the video together with lack of story should you still get rid of the transitions?
The thing is why people rely on fancy transitions in vacation videos is because they're actually on a vacation. People don't tend to think on story and such things on their travels, so they just grab some cool shots when they remember to. That's why in the end, they end up with random footage thats needs to be pieced together and to make things interesting... with fancy transitions.
Matty brown is the only guy successfully combines story and transitions. Also it feels like after watchtower of turkey everyone is trying to imitate that style of video.
Hi Matti, this was super helpful and inspiring. Exactly my thoughts! I was getting so sick from those transitions everywhere that almost every time I was seeing any, I was just closing the video right away LOL
Awesome Video man, i just found your channel but ive been thinking about how saturated the videography community is with all these effects and transitions. I agree with your thinking 100%
7 років тому
Thank you so much for this video. i just start my youtube channel and i fell tempted to use those transitions (in fact, i used them a lot)... but this reminds me to get out of the comfort zone and create good stories! is hard, but better!
this fits with Casey's latest video.. How to vlog like Casey by Casey... story is everything.. act 1 act 2 act 3... setup (establishing), conflict, resolution (climax) respectively.. Hope I remember it right.. hehe
I needed this! Just made an edit and I was happy with the clips and how the story played out but I was putting a fade effect between every clip thinking it wouldn't look finished if I didn't, the result is not pretty so I went back and really thought about when I want to use transitions and what it will add to my video and now I only have a few bu they follow the story! Thank you for this!
I'm guilty of this , My only excuse would be is I work and just do this for fun but while doing this for fun I do want to learn and better myself . I know when a new year begins I do something different hoping to better myself . Thanks for this video definitely has good info and inspiration to do a hobby I love .
This is exactly the reason why we don't use such transitions on our videos. We attempt to story-tell our videos using our clips and the flow of the videos and not rely on transitions just to look "cool" :D
There's so many UA-cam "filmmakers" out there who all make substanceless videos that look exactly the same, use the same gimmicky transitions to death and offer absolutely nothing original to the table. Take inspiration from a variety of people, but don't flat out copy someone's style. The thing that irks me about these trendy transitions is that they're all fake. It's all put in digitally. I appreciate great transitions like every single one in Watchtower of Turkey because they're real, they're achieved through a masterful level of analysis of movement and precise cuts. Getting every cut to blend into one another seamlessly is what I tried to go for in my "Lost in Europe" video. No fake transitions, just real, raw cuts.
I sometimes use "trendy" transitions but actually usually I just use no transition lol. I just let it go from one shot tot eh next and time the cut with the music.
transitions do get boring after a bit. could you do a video on how to edit on sony vegas for those who dont have adobe premium? i dont know how to colour grade with this.
Question. I have a lot of footage I have already taken, and have already hit the 'point of no return' editing wise. Should I finish the edit (witch needs to be done in less than a week and a half for school) or start over and try to make a story out of footage the was filmed with no intention of having a story of any sort. Thanks.
I think I may be guilty of using too many transitions in my two latest video's of South Africa and Mauritius. A story is a lot more powerful than a transition. Good reminder for my next video.
I do like the transitions but they have to be used at the right time and very infrequently. I used to use them all the time and now I don't use them at all
when you suck at after effects we will focus on storytelling, and the other way around if you suck at both, you buy transitions packs and use them anyway
can you make a tutorial of making cinematic videos with phone.... showing the way you take shots with phone and at what fps will you shoot in phone...plzz
Recipe for cool travel videos:
- No story
- Sony camera
- Fancy transitions
- M31 LUT
- Loads of slow-mo's
+Jeroen nothing wrong with any of those except the no story and as long as they support the story
dont forget the drone..
Bonus points for including a girl, an open door helicopter flight, and a trip to Hawaii, London or New York.
what about cool music.
^ don't forget deep house or some sort like that kind of music
A good transition is usually not meant to be noticeable
it depends on the story as well, like there are film with jump cuts. and are brilliant.
I feel like most travel videos now have a little too many funky transitions. Maybe it's just me but when I watch a movie and fall in love with it when it comes to cinematography, there is almost no transition in that movie and it's just mainly the tone and vibe of the movie, and storytelling.
+JSTFD yep story and cinematography to support the story
JSTFD agreed
Yes, concur with this as well!
Matt, you're refreshingly blunt and straight forward. Though it can be hard to hear, it's INSANELY helpful.
Thank you for doing what you do!
Thank you for calling out the transitions! I really don't like this trend, and like you said, it's a crutch for lack of story/content.
Lucky Bastard (me)!!! Thank you Matti!!! You made my day!!! 100% right with fancy transitions. BTW, You did a great job of pronouncing my name 🍻
Cezary Lopacinski At first I thought it'll be a Spanish name - smth like Cesare Lopez. At least that's how it sounds when he started his first attempts. :-)

Every trendy Transitions now refers to Sam kolder transitions.
Maybe in the UA-cam space! But there were guys doing it wayyyyy before already
watch a video called Watch Tower Over Turkey I'm pretty sure thats where Sam got the ideas for the transitions.
Trey Marolf. Watchtower of Turkey is heavily inspired by Matty Brown. @TravelFeels Thanks so much for the positiv Feedback on my "Bali" Video and for honor it as the "pick of the day"
+Max Weber thanks for sending it over and great work man! 🙏
Who else is guilty of using trendy transitions JUST because they look cool?!? OR is it just me? 😂
TravelFeels I am
mmm maybe sometimes then :-)
TravelFeels I dont have twitter
nope... i like the matte transitions way more
they do
Love the channel dude, always like seeing new uploads! Greetings from rainy Ireland :-)
thanks so much! 🙏🙏
Man , you and Pete have opened a whole new world for us newbies ! Big up !
Yes guilty! I think that everyone is trying to show off their skills and we tend to forget to tell a story...
I also feel it's not always easy to tell a story... it takes preparation and thought! #WeKeepLearning
p.s. not everyone has a girlfriend to tell a story about hahaha 😂
And do you have to resend a tweet if you've mailed already couple of days ago?
Hahahha totally agree ! i find i so hard to make a story by my self
In my opinion it is better to document and build around it.Continuous recording and a lot of footage with some good editing to create a story. Life gives us a story and we just put the pieces together.

You guys are awesome. This helps us beginner filmmakers to understand how to make great films and also you guys are helping small filmmakers to get more exposure. Great work guys.. 👍😊
Amen brother! Glad someone popular on UA-cam is calling out story-less oversaturated transitions videos. 🙌
I've noticed early on that some of my most cinematic videos got the least amount of likes and learned to simply focus on the story. I use trendy transitions on client projects because that's all they like but on my stuff I do my own style. Great advice
Feels good seeing someone giving genuine feedback!
FINALLY SOMEBODY SAID IT! THANK. YOU. MATTI.
Again nothing wrong with them! Just use them when it fits
Amen
This somehow appeared on my list of recommended videos. Good thing I watched it out of curiosity, I learned something new and I don't even make travel videos. The idea shared is useful in a lot of other things. When creating something, the story or the idea definitely counts more than fancy ways of showing them. Pretty similar to how delicious food can be eaten on its own, but condiments are just extras to enhance an already good flavor.
I completely agree.
The challenge I think most people have is not being interesting enough to carry the story of a video/vlog/movie. So they rely on cinematography instead. I always feel that iss my problem when making vlogs or travel videos.

this is what happens a lot. i saw some people use too much transitions (plus slow mos..) and they forget to put the story in the video. thank you for this video it's very informative!

Not only am I learning with these videos I also get to find new people to watch :) loving this series
How can you tell a story when filming alone? I usually travel on my own and have no-one to film, so what can I do?
Aly voiceover does wonders orprinted word on the screen. Sometimes you don't even need words
The people, the culture, yourself, how you interact and react to them. If you're alone, then mostly the main character is you, so you'll need to talk to your viewers or be really good at showing the story visually.
Couldnt agree more. I was actually going to make a film with the exact same message. Might still throw my 2 cents in
So true actually. Great video! 👌
A story is important - no questions asked. Its really all about story telling, the video quality, transitions, etc is just a plus.
Awesome video Matti! Glad you brought this up
i'm so agree with you, there's a lot of filmmaker or content creator who has used much fancy transition and fancy color graded but there's no story to tell, especially in my country. but sadly, that kind of the video is more in demand than those who have strong storytelling. cool techniques editing is more demand than a video with strong story telling in my country.
You might be my favorite UA-cam channel right now.
Great tip TF 👍👍👍
Thanks for the tips! I don't really use any fancy transitions just straight cuts. But I am new to creating films with footage and I never thought about "building a story" I can definitely see how I could improve my future recordings by incorporating more character into the shots!
Referring your viewers to those that actually teach story is a great idea. Nice work.
Nothing wrong with fancy transitions IF they are icing on the cake and support the storytelling.
So on point with this message! I experimented with them in a couple vids but when EVERYONE is doing the same thing it just gets a bit cringeworthy. I used a zoom in and a zoom out in quick succession in my latest vid to take you on board a kayak to see some cool technology but then straight back out again so it had a reason and purpose. best channel on YT for film based youtubers
Really love this channel
+Justin Balaguer thanks for being here!
one question. erm do you think its a bad idea to use same footage in a video?
So grateful that someone finally said the truth about these transitions.
It's difficult to know when to use these transitions, can you help us ?
I recommend story boarding before filming always. Have everything clear in your mind and written down or drawn on paper. Then start filming.
This was an excellent video to watch as someone who is really beginning to learn and develop in film making, thanks!
I am a little less bewildered and intimidated with every video I watch....you are a GURU.....
I think its time to change our point of view and time to see the reality and leaving those fancy transitions :) Thanks for the advice man. I didn't realize this idea would probably make my videos better!!!!
Very inspiring sir! I like the tips and the focus on story, thanks and keep on keeping' on. I just started following you and it's getting me pumped to get some of my work out there. yes. many videos do those transition effects. and many try to imitate Sam kolder's style
Yep its true
and the problem is? if it looks good and goes with the content being produced... who cares?
Visual Anthony People care because they see basically a bland copy of what has been produced thousands of times before. It's a trend similar to autotune in pop music. At the beginning it's new and fresh, later it's getting annoying and uncreative

German Forero You're exactly right. I was wondering if anyone else noticed that. Sam makes very cool content but yes, he is not the originator as most people think.
I don't know bout you guys. I'm not a film expert, but for me, the best transition is the jumpcuts hahah. It's so easy to be digested tbh
Incredible video man! Thanks for all the tips! As a classically trained musician who wants to learn more about filmmaking and storytelling, this was huge! =)
Becoming a big fan man, your work is very well recieved from not so sunny England :-)
+Danny Holland thanks dude!

Hi Matti, this was super helpful and inspiring. Exactly my thoughts! I was getting so sick from those transitions everywhere that almost every time I was seeing any, I was just closing the video right away LOL
geez... I miss travel feels og days... i dig so much this look and vibe...
Hey TravelFeels. Can you make a video about how to tell a story in videos. It's clearly a recurring issue. A video with tips would help. Thanks
Truth. My man earned a subscriber
Awesome video as usual. Hope to someday get my quality somewhere close to what yours is. Keep 'em coming!!!
Awesome Video man, i just found your channel but ive been thinking about how saturated the videography community is with all these effects and transitions. I agree with your thinking 100%
Thank you so much for this video. i just start my youtube channel and i fell tempted to use those transitions (in fact, i used them a lot)... but this reminds me to get out of the comfort zone and create good stories! is hard, but better!
Thanks for the Feed Back Matti !
Amen.
this fits with Casey's latest video.. How to vlog like Casey by Casey... story is everything.. act 1 act 2 act 3... setup (establishing), conflict, resolution (climax) respectively.. Hope I remember it right.. hehe
I am interested in hearing more about what helps create story in video.
What I find funny about this setting is that with the window, even your beard looks professionally lit. I bet no one used a beard light before...
Great video. Also this C300 footage looks heavenly
Great points! Nice to learn from other people's work before I start myself.
Great tips! I'm about to enter filmmaking world. This one really helps! Thanks.
You're a stellar guy. I love your helpful videos!
I feel like someone is going to watch this and get but hurt but this advice is gold. Keep doing you
Dustin Kennon let them keep going nuts with the transitions and wonder why no one is interested in their work
I don't even know how to create fancy transitions it's very tough I think I should practice these a lot!
This is really good, really liked it!
+Lukas Knutsson 👌
Thanks for this video mate! I really needed it... cheers!
This is such good feedback! Thank you 🙌🏽
There's so many UA-cam "filmmakers" out there who all make substanceless videos that look exactly the same, use the same gimmicky transitions to death and offer absolutely nothing original to the table.
The first video I get proposed under this video is Awesome TRANSITIONS to make your videos BETTER!! Premiere Pro Tutorial
by Peter McKinnon xD
Lol :D
BwaHaHaHa!!! That is hilarious!
Sam Kolder; Best travel videos, no story, just cool shots and transitions.
Thank God i don't know how to do transition, like you said Mattih "Less is more" 😊 love your channel thanks for sharing this
I sometimes use "trendy" transitions but actually usually I just use no transition lol.
Nice video Matti, could not agree more. I am working purely on the story.
I do like the transitions but they have to be used at the right time and very infrequently. I used to use them all the time and now I don't use them at all
when you suck at after effects we will focus on storytelling, and the other way around
if you suck at both, you buy transitions packs and use them anyway
THANK YOU FOR SAYING IT
@brandon li 's work is a perfect example of story telling and proper use of transitions
Unravld Studios better but still a copy and over use of transitions.
ekphotography travel feels uses the same transitions but he does it right. It's just these transition fan boys over hyping it
can you make a tutorial of making cinematic videos with phone.... showing the way you take shots with phone and at what fps will you shoot in phone...plzz
