  • Are you tired of summer days where you have to bear the sweltering heat of the summer sun? Once summer says hello to us, we may yet again face the consequences of the terrible heat that it brings us, and some find this annoying heat unbearable. One of your choices is to satisfy yourself with a portable air conditioner.

    A portable air conditioner, as its name indicates, is a particular type of air conditioner which is easy to move from location to location. As it is portable, it can be used anywhere you need fresh cool air, like tents, camps, RV, and even in a boat or vehicle. When it is hot, this small air conditioner gives a bit of relief by providing fresh cool air.
    Portable tent air conditioners are relatively easy to install and carry from one place to another. Moreover, unlike regular air conditioners, they can run on battery power, so there is no need to plug into an electric socket. That is why they are being used in camping and tents. Depending upon the features, size, and capacity, their price may vary from a few hundred to thousands.
    Unlike the other types that just stay fixed in a window, a portable air conditioner can be moved to different places in your RV, tent, or office whenever you feel like it. When the compressor is running, it compresses the refrigerant gas from a low to a high pressure. The high-pressure gas is cooled, turning it into a liquid, and then it is brought to the condenser. This process creates heat that needs to be removed from the area you are trying to cool. This is why home AC Compressors are outside. For portable air conditioners, we need to direct the heat out of the space using a discharge hose. This hose must be put outside the window or through a wall, whichever works best for you. Window kits may be available, depending on the portable air conditioner type you want.

    Im really confused. Why would you not pull fresh air from the conditioned air inside the tent so the unit doesn't have to run as hard? If you can set a temperature does it blow that temperature (like a vehicle) or does it run untill the air reaches that temp then the compressor kicks off (like a home central hvac)

    • @dillonpartin10
      @dillonpartin10 Місяць тому

      Because you wouldn't be recirculating it, you're running that air across the condenser and then shooting it outside so you'd be taking your cold air and getting rid of it. it's already recirculating the cold air inside to push over the evaporator

    What it will do is dehumidify if your space is somewhat airtight & that can make it MUCH more comfortable even if it doesn't cool it down a lot. Having the unit inside & venting the hot air out will defeat that as you're exhausting a lot of air that must be replaced with hot humid air from outside. Much better to have the unit outside & pipe both the indoor pipes into the space.
    And You're a genius for mentioning using it as a heater. By reversing the pipes, you've got a heat pump! I never would have thought of that.

      Hi Jason, I was just about to make a similar comment. I'm surprised he hasn't replied to your comment. Yes, he really should use both hoses on the same side. He could keep the unit inside the tent as long as the fresh air for the exhaust was also pulling from outside the tent rather than stealing conditioned air from inside the tent. Conditioned air that would be made up by pulling outside air into the tent space through the tent's mesh screening. It would be best if BougeRV supplied three hoses so that you could vent outside the tent and direct the cooled air where you want it. I like that their hose adapter also separates the two hoses better than his home made window adapter. You really don't want to be pulling in your hot exhaust air. Having the hot exhaust above the intake is good but having them further apart is even better.
      I was glad he mentioned flipping to use it as a heater. I've always wondered why people don't point that out. It functions like a mini split with the unit separation being supplied by air hoses. Sadly you can't use it in really cold temps as ice would start to build up on the evaporator side. Mini splits for cold countries are designed to periodically reverse to melt ice off the coils when being used for heat in the winter.

    Hello Chris, I'm curious if this is worth the time buying to cool a well insulated Sprinter van. This seems like a good idea for the van rather than tearing my entire build apart and installing an A/C unit on the roof. It would only be used during drastic weather as I live in the PNW and we can have decent summers in the 70's.
    Looking forward hearing back from you, thanks!

      These kinds of portable units are not designed to cool a whole room, but a small room is possible. They are designed for personal comfort in small spaces. If you are in your sprinter van and have the AC vented out cooling the inside while sitting at your table, the cooling hose underneath the table will keep that area very nice and cool for you, even when it gets really hot outside. When you sleep at night, you move the cooling hose to where your bed is and lay down with the cooling hose by you. It’ll keep you nicely cooled ab comfortable, even if there are two of you.

      . what about a small cuddly cabin on a 25ft boat....i was thinking to place it on the dash of the open pilot house and have the cooling tube/tubes pointed and fed through the hatch of the door entrance. The cuddly is probably 6 an a half ft at its widest, by 6 and a half ft long and probably no higher than 4 ft in height

    Chris thanks for the vid. I have a 24v RV, but as you know the battery might be 26v resting or as much as 28.8v as an absorb point. What would this unit think about nearly 29 volts? It seems to me it would be much more efficient supplying with DC rather than AC via inverter / batteries. BTW, I have a popup wedge camper and know there are time an ac will be necessary for comfort. Thanks, Earl

The bed is approx 6x5 and height to the roof is 4 1/2 feet, so the entire area is approximately 140 cubic feet and it’s somewhat insulated. @ChrisSgaraglino I have a 2013 expedition that my (epileptic) son amd I travel long road trips in. We also have a service dog. I have two "dual purpose" ( like a deep cycle but for car motors) batteries. Most times we can plug into a 110v outlet but times when taking naps at rest stops and such during our journey I need to keep my son's and dog's heat regulated. I can't run the engine for 6+ hours a night but I do wake up often and can start the vehicle to recharge the batteries. Anyways, my question is will this or a similar unit cool a vehicle at night sufficiently to keep my son and pup from overheating? I wouldn't expect it to cool enough during the day in the sun, just concerned about night time. Thank you in advance for your help.

      Honestly, it’s been a minute since I did this video.
      What I do know is that the watts for 12v are different than the watts for 120v. Also, I ran tests at 12v regulated and unregulated.
      That said, I can go back to the video and find out where you referenced the 350 watts, and then I can tell you what I used to get that measurement.
      What I use is a 120v in-line meter that gives me voltage and amps being drawn, which I can determine watts at that time.
      On the 12v side, I have a separate in-line meter that gives me the same readings for watts and a lot more information.
      It’s good to understand that in most cases, the marketing specs are going to be calculated in a pristine, controlled environment by the manufacturer. That is if it was even tested at all. I have found that in many cases, the specs posted were from the engineered “math” and not real-life testing.
      One of the biggest factors that I remember in this test was the outside temperature, which was in the high 90s if I'm not mistaken. That's going to cause something like this to work extremely hard. The brick itself was getting extremely hot, and anytime you have electronics that are hot, they're going to draw quite a bit more power than if it was cooler.
      I'll either find my test data notes, or I'll pull it out and retest it for you this weekend.

    If you put it outside the tent, am I correct in thinking the thermostat would read the outside temperature? I guess that wouldn’t matter if it’s really hot outside at night. It would just run continuously.
    Also if you tried to run it like a heater and it’s 35 degrees outside, can you set it low enough run? Sorry if I missed that in the video.

    • @ChrisSgaraglino
      @ChrisSgaraglino  Рік тому

      If it’s hot enough for outside the tent, then it will be constantly running anyway. As for heat, you’ll want it inside to get the best advantage, and therefore, it will likely keep running. But remember it’s not designed to be a heater, there are just some situations where it might help.
