    Hey All! Yes, I know. Games Workshop have been less-than-cool to their customers recently: Excessive FOMO marketing, LFGS supply failures, untruths about Cursed City being supported, oafish IP enforcement, etc. etc. The Goobertown Hobbies video pipeline is now stocked with games and minis from a wide variety of other companies. There’s a LOT of exciting stuff on the way! All that being said, here I am publishing a 40k video. I wanted to get this Chaos video out ASAP, because it promotes a charity raffle which is live right now. Check out that raffle, and stay tuned for some spicy new videos :-) www.novaopenfoundation.org/

      Oh aye I totally get it Brent! I know there's a fair amount of negative press surrounding GW, but as a content creator I totally understand that you gotta do what's already in the pipeline. Though it's awesome that you are branching out into more obscure brands, as there's a lot of really cool stuff out there that is almost as enjoyable to discover.

    YES!!!! Always a pleasure Brent. Just to add a slight clarification, I donated my Khârn model to this year’s NOVA raffle which was beautifully painted by Jordan Powell (AspiringChampionPainting). This Khârn has brought me many fun times on the tabletop and will now be gifted and welcomed to a new home of the lucky winner.

    I'm hearing very different opinions about Nurgle though:
    - It's good for beginners because Nurgle is messy by default
    - It's terrible for beginners due to the tons of details

    • @geteavnroc2250
      @geteavnroc2250 3 роки тому +22

      Yeah, you can't go wrong with a Death Guard army, or a Nurgle army, if you're a first time painter. They're not extremely technical, and they usually look great on the table top, without a ton of effort, more than just base coating and a wash.

    • @murrayprovan4835
      @murrayprovan4835 3 роки тому +11

      Yeah but with beginners you don't need to go for all the details and stuffs

    • @abaddon7558
      @abaddon7558 3 роки тому +3

      the "messy by default argument" haha what a blast from the past :D the terms of "messy" and how it gives the illusion of easyness could be a subject for a warning video, both for painting and conversions, so beginners don't fall for it. Of course we can argue, that all depend of your goal and the level of work and finition you are targeting. Maybe somebody have already talked about it somewhere, can't find anything tho.

    • @Totema1
      @Totema1 3 роки тому +11

      That's the terrific part about them, though. If you have the skill and confidence, you can pick out the details and take them to whatever level you're comfortable with. Otherwise, you can also just slap some washes over them, because they're probably covered with sick grime in the lore anyhow.

    • @ramsesrodriguez1049
      @ramsesrodriguez1049 3 роки тому +4

      @@murrayprovan4835 ^^^ he's got it. Do the crazy, messy, trail and error stuff. Tackle the details at your own pace. Never be afraid to go back and to some more work on a model after you learn something. If you keep the same dudes and put time into them and rework them when you get better and better nurgle can be your centerpiece army

    If you're not confident with testing out paint consistency on your expensive models, here's a hot tip!
    Prime up a part of the sprue, and test your paints on that! It's a great way to get a feel for your paint without putting it on something you are afraid of ruining.
    And you can also use it to try out scary new techniques such as edge highlighting and wet blending!

I'm so... so jealous... all of my models are sitting there begging me to assemble them and paint them. I decided to redo my paintjob for the Dark Angels I have, do a custom chapter for my primaris and then I still have Tau to put together (start collecting box, getting that assembled this weekend... already have the Ethereal, 3 crisis suits and 6 drones built!) Then there's my Seraphon for AoS that are looking longingly at my tools.

  • @AzraelThanatos

    You know, there's a rather easy way to do several of the armies.
    Prime/Base layer in black, then use a bright neon color for a light drybrush to hit the edges, then another bright color for anything on the model that would be glowing. Paint base itself black with the rim in the same neon you used for the army.
    You get a rather neat effect that looks a lot like the old wireframe displays in games and scifi movies.
    A friend of mine did that with the older Prodoss AvP game stuff he'd gotten, it was a rather fun way for an extremely quick and simple paint job.

    Another line that's easy to get into are Northstar's plastics, both for Frostgrave and Stargrave (though I'm not a fan of the troopers). As a new painter to 40k (and painter of my group), I think CSM is kinda wild because of the amount of trim. I started painting with Tyranids (easy), then custodes (all gold, easy) and last CSM (advanced).
    I’m happy I started that way based on the amount of detail each army had. Painting an army is not a race, but we all want to get those toys on the table to play and I think CSM will take some time to finish as stated in the video.
    However, one can look back at the CSM as a starting point and think “meh, I’ve had worse.”

    You make some solid points, but now these poor beginners will have to PLAY chaos space marines - Which might just send them out of the hobby ;p - Lord discordant looks sick, I never managed to finish mine... just couldn't push through the baroque trim

    I see your 40k Chaos Space Marines, and raise you WFB Chaos Warriors! Far better in my opinion.
    Tomb King skeltons are good. As is pretty much anything from the 90's or any of the "modern-retro" models that various companies produce.
    New players/painters don't need detail (trust me I started with 7th Ed Empire). They need big open surfaces to experiment with colours, blends & layers. Basics first.
    This is why Chaos Warriors are best in my opinion. No guns, minimal fancyness, simple weapons and best of all mostly no flesh tones (same with CSM), but also the opportunity to practice your meltalics, fur, leather and cloth techniques.
    Reminds me that I should get some...
    *Checks gw*
    Hummm out of stock... maybe that's a sign?

    Thank you so much for this! I am brand new, and looking into what I even *want* to play, and then worryingly if I can paint the faction I like well enough. You've given me confidence to just go and try, even an army usually called "way too difficult for a beginner".

    Ya know it’s going to be a good day whenever you see that 🔵 and watch a new video by Brent. I don’t even paint GW, but it’s good advice for also knocking out my massive pile of minis I’ve printed. Thanks for the inspiration Brent, now where did I put my Black Primer Spray ...

    Not gonna lie, when I saw you ACTUALLY suggesting Chaos I was kinda thrown back.....but I get what you're saying. Patience and accuracy scare people off pretty hard, but if you can convince them how awesome it can look, the "Paint by numbers" of Chaos is actually a great thing to notice. Absolute props to this revelation, will consider this when talking to people getting into the hobby!

    I would disagree with chaos (or more specifically thousand sons) as starter models because theres just SO MUCH DANG TRIM! Its mind numbing for someone who just got into the hobby. I had far more fun with my vanilla blue space marines and space skeletons that came in the starter box a couple of years ago, because I was dealing with more than one color at a time and it was fun. Painting Thousand Sons, however, is just hours of carefully painting the trim. No fun at all lol.

    Would you have any similar advice for learning/practicing Grenstuff sculpting? How can you get good with it when you first might not even know what to make? Most things you might field numbers of don't necessarily need any, where you could then practice via repetition, and one might not want a Bitz box filled with casualty models you needed to fail on, yo eventually get good enough to succeed. It's often HQs and Special Characters; the "show'em off" pieces of your force, that would get this, but if you've never done it, how to start? I don't have an army; I just occasionally buy a piece, and do some work on it. I've wanted to make a few more kit-bash pieces, to represent things I'd like, but one of them; my own special character, requires some Greenstuff work, or whatever other sculpting putty you might prefer, and it's hard to just try on him, knowing I'm not experienced at it, bur I don't want to have to buy whole new boxes, to get the one part out of them that he uses, because my sculpting work sucked that time. How do people get better at this? Thank you.

    This is true as long as you have a good metallic that only takes 1 coat. Trying this with a crappy metallic paint with bad coverage is literally the worst
