Chris Ludwig We used to have a 06’ Commander with a 4.7L V8 before I got a 2013 Jeep Rubicon Unlimited 10th Anniversary Edition. Was a great vehicle, and was great for towing stuff with as well! Ended up buying a 08’ Dodge Ram 1500 to tow with after realizing the Wrangler just can’t tow enough...
It’s not practical, the Jeep is already cramped inside, you’d only be able to fit small adults or kids if you add a 3rd row, unless you have the top off all the time
As a fellow jeep owner and huge fan of mopar, I wish jeep never stopped making the Commander. I guess the grand Cherokee is going to have a 3rd row model, but they're so small. And when kids get older/taller, the Commander is the perfect jeep for a family and for trail driving. PLEASE JEEP, BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL 3RD ROW, THE COMMANDER
You've put a lot of thought into it. For what it's worth, perhaps trim and round the zip ties so they don't rub. Also, I've rolled a jeep going down the highway rolling one and a half times. I'm lucky to be alive. Give your kids something to hang on to so their hands and arms don't flop around in case of a rollover. That way they don't grab the bar overhead while rolling. Lastly, I would get everything on the bar welded. Bolts with shear off with force. After my rollover, the entire roll bar was bent.

Random internet person’s opinion. 1. I think there’s a reason that most of the racing harnesses clip to a bar behind the seat perpendicular to your back, I believe it keeps it straighter in a wreck. 2. With your little ones in the 4 point harness watch out for submarining. Very dangerous, you can avoid this with a 5 point harness or ASM 4 points. In some cases 4 point harnesses are less safe than factory 3 points. That being said, very cool!! The fiancé and I are looking at a Jeep but want a big family so this is just what we needed to see! As for your jack, you could get a High-Lift jack that you can bolt to your hood, fender or bumpers. As someone else mention, you don’t want any projectiles within the Jeep if you have an accident. Be safe... we look forward to your new Jeep adventures!
My only things I wasn't sold on was that I felt like a submarine belt should have been present, and there should be a bar welded across the frame at the back to attach the belts to. @@jennytrevor As a former CPST, when did they start providing training for racing harnesses? And, as a CPST, how do you feel comfortable endorsing something that has had not crash safety testing or certification? Racing Harnesses are designed for adults, not for working in conjunction with child passenger restraints. As a CPST, you put yourself and your sponsoring organization at risk by even bring up the CPST certification.
Thanks for that clarification. I wasn’t meaning to condone the racing seat belts. I cannot recommend using the racing seat belts for kids. Just meant to give the two tips for general circumstances that you should have lap belt over hips and shouldn’t knot/tie the seat belts. Definitely encourage you to get checked by a CPST.
Mount a high lift jack on the front bumper. If you plan on any true off roaring roading you'll be glad you have the high lift jack - can't count all the times and reasons we used ours during our jeeping years.
Great job! May I suggest that you have the nuts welded on to the plates and the plates welded to the frame. This way it would be easier to remove that seat frame. You can carry a battery powered impact with you in case you need the jack. Also you may be able to cut the long bracket that goes to the second row bolt and install a heavy duty hinge. This way you only have to remove to two rear bolts. Just a thought. Again great job. Love the Jeep.
@@LoftisPartyofSix ur welcome, I have a 2014 Ford F150 4x4 and I mounted an emergency tool box in the bed because I didn't want tools in the cab if I had a roll over. I rolled a car in the early 70's and things do fly around so I have always kept this in mind.
You sent me this link after I watched your rev video last night and I must say my mind is blown! I did read Jeep is releasing a 3rd row in 2020 but I had no idea people were doing this themselves. Great video love how you make things work for you.
This was a great mod video and I loved the detail that went into it. Also appreciate your concern for safety particularly where the kids are concerned. Just curious whether you researched how much of a crumple zone Jeeps have in the back? That would be my greatest concern from the perspective of getting rear ended...I was in a multiple car wreck on the highway as a kid in the rear seat and was amazed how the trunk of our car was just compressed like an accordion. Later, I found out that many vehicles are designed with certain areas (crumple zones) front and back to be weaker and absorb the impact...an area you wouldn’t want to be physically in.
Since the kids are so small you may want to take an idea from backpacks and create a simple chest strap to keep the shoulder straps from slipping off their shoulders. Regardless of how reasonably snug you make the straps, there just isn’t enough little person there to keep the harness tight.
I’m glad you did a very safe job & great looking also. I will add do not let your kids think the roll bar is a thing to hold on too. Very dangerous if you did roll & they grab that . So i suggest getting two paracord type grab handles that mount on the front head rests. Make them grab them instead. Thanks
Nice job. Not sure if it has been mentioned or if you thought about it but put some padding on the rear rollbar on the side angles. In the event of a side impact heads can move greatly in one direction or another and you want to make sure those are padded.
Loosen the shoulder straps and tighten the lap belt to bring it lower if needed to keep it off their stomach area. Just found out we will have four 4 and under. I started looking at swapping my trucks front center console for a jump seat. Guess what, the safety police instantly share their opinions. You’re kids are just as safe in the back of your Jeep as someone driving an SUV. There are pros/cons to everything and anyone who says you’re not being safe should consider things like the amount of glass that will shatter in their factory 3rd row SUV. Good job!
You did a great job, I’m impressed. I think if it was me I would tried to get the seat frame redone so that you could close the gate with the seat down and access the jack. But that May take too much leg room. We have a big family and I love how your making things work for you all.
Awesome video. I have been getting a lot of questions about fitting car seats into a Wrangler and how to go 3 wide. I wrote an article about it and new people had been installing a third seat, but I had not seen it done yet. This is great. I really like what you have done. Clearly your kids will remember your adventures and the Jeep! I have a Grand Wagoneer because my Grandfather had one and we used to take vacations in it. I'm looking now for another Wrangler... Oh and my father is dying to find an RV to go travel.
amazing job! Love all the safety modifications and all the thought you have put into this. Can't wait to see you all go for that first, fun ride. Thanks so much for taking us along your journey. Safe travels!
I know I’m a little late to this party, but it seems to me like the plastic being bolted in between your body and the new welded seat platform would just smash and possibly allow enough movement to shear the bolts and fling the seat out. You might remount the seat platform underneath the plastic pieces.
Michael this is awesome! Job well done sir. My husband is going to be excited and want to do this with his. His first vehicle was a Jeep Wrangler, it’s been in his grandparents barn for awhile now. I don’t think we could fit a family of 7 though 😢 Good luck with it. Happy Adventures Thanks for sharing 💕
Would the door close if the seat frame was shorter or closer to the right instead lf the left? Your frame hugs the left and doesn’t close on the left. How about moving the frame closer to the right? That would of course need the welds to be longer on the left than the right to hug right up on the right and passengers would get in on the left. Great video and TIA! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
You should also do the mod where you mount regular front seats on the second row. The middle seat is worthless, so there's that. That also gives an egress point to the front of the jeep.
This is awesome!! I always wanted to have a thrift row seat in my Jeep. But never really found anything to save. You have covered ever point possible. My only concern is the drilling the holes through the structure of the Jeep. Now did you just drill through the structure of the body or the body and the ladder frame? Cause when you start drilling holes depending on the location. You are actually causing more of a safety hazard. Because of the impact of a accident. The structure or the frame has lost the ability to absorb the impact.
K02s are great! (Got a pair of 35s myself on my Rubi JLU). But I've seen them pop if you hit the wrong (or right?) rock off roading. Good info on this vid! Thanks!
Thank you for making such a thorough video! I’ve been searching for info on how to do this since we got our Rv/Jeep for the same thing. I love your videos and your family is precious. you guys are certainly living the dream! Keep the videos comin!
Glad it helped!! One thing I would do differently is move the seat more to the right or up an inch or two so that when the seat lays flat I can shut the tailgate. Other than that I love it!
Wow... pretty cool! Now my GF will never leave me alone about wanting a Jeep with our 2 kids! I had her pretty much convienced it was never gonna happen. Now I’m starting it like it myself! AWD SUV’s just don’t have the same capabilities as true 4x4’s! Pretty awesome tho! Congrats on the new mods! Now let’s see if off road with all The kidos! I bet it will be a blast!
Looks like a safe and well thought out system for the Jeep. I think you did an excellent job! Maybe you could bolt the jack under one of the seats? Better than having to remember to take it when you leave the motor home.
Awesome job. Just a note that if you had shifted seat to passenger side instead of driver side, access would have been easier and tailgate probably would have closed even with seat folded. Love my jeep!
Great job! When you get new rims make sure to have the correct offset so you can eliminate those spacers. Like the 3rd row and this would have been great 3 years ago with our family of 5. Now our oldest is off to college so back to the OEM models. 😁
Great video, my husband also drives a Jeep Rubi! I watched out of order and was wondering how 4 kids sat in a Jeep. Lol wranglers have zero trunk space anyway so can’t wait to see what you end up with. Enjoy!
please link the seatbelts and rollbar extension. get a tire carrier with rack mounts and a bumper carrier. it will maintain a lower center of gravity and give more protection for the kiddos. God bless you brother.
Nice video and thanks for sharing this upgrade. Also you should try taking off the top with the gate closed so that the giant tire is not on your way. I'm a short person and I had to learn this quick.
Definitely an interesting and creative way to make it work for your family. Good job! My only concern would be the 3rd row seat belts. Lap belts should go across the hip/thighs and not the stomach. It's a huge safety issue if you were ever in an accident. Maybe they can be tweaked to fit properly?

You can carry a battery powered impact with you in case you need the jack. Also you may be able to cut the long bracket that goes to the second row bolt and install a heavy duty hinge. This way you only have to remove to two rear bolts. Just a thought. Again great job. Love the Jeep.
Just remember to install ur jack outside the Jeep some how, u don't want it flopping around in case of a roll over.
Agreed. Thanks
Kenneth C. Great point mate, I’ve seen it end really bad when it’s been inside the car
You sent me this link after I watched your rev video last night and I must say my mind is blown! I did read Jeep is releasing a 3rd row in 2020 but I had no idea people were doing this themselves.
Great video love how you make things work for you.
Thank you 😊
This was a great mod video and I loved the detail that went into it.
Great idea!! Thanks
I’m glad you did a very safe job & great looking also. I will add do not let your kids think the roll bar is a thing to hold on too. Very dangerous if you did roll & they grab that . So i suggest getting two paracord type grab handles that mount on the front head rests. Make them grab them instead. Thanks
Good tip.. thanks
Nice job. Not sure if it has been mentioned or if you thought about it but put some padding on the rear rollbar on the side angles. In the event of a side impact heads can move greatly in one direction or another and you want to make sure those are padded.
Yes I’m looking for a padding like the rest of the Jeep has. Thanks
Man., that set up is perfect
I’m going to steal you whole set up.
Good job!
Thank you 😊
Love love love !!! I also have 4 children and thought getting a jeep would be so out of the question. Thank you so much for sharing !
Thanks for watching!!
You did a great job, I’m impressed. I think if it was me I would tried to get the seat frame redone so that you could close the gate with the seat down and access the jack. But that May take too much leg room. We have a big family and I love how your making things work for you all.
I might do something to change it in the future but for now it will work.
Thank you 😊
amazing job! Love all the safety modifications and all the thought you have put into this. Can't wait to see you all go for that first, fun ride. Thanks so much for taking us along your journey. Safe travels!
Thank you 😊
I know I’m a little late to this party, but it seems to me like the plastic being bolted in between your body and the new welded seat platform would just smash and possibly allow enough movement to shear the bolts and fling the seat out. You might remount the seat platform underneath the plastic pieces.
I sent this my husband and he was geeked! I just want to see how the roof goes back on!
No issues with getting the roof on.. it all fits perfectly.
Ah so it's just the soft top which doesn't fit over the new roll bar?
Tony Snook that’s correct.. the new bar won’t allow it!
We had 7 in ours yesterday! A friends kid sit between the 2 car seats in the middle row. Thanks for watching
That looks sweet post a video of all six of you in it. Look awesome. You could always get a basket to slide into the 2" receiver.
Thank you 😊
Would the door close if the seat frame was shorter or closer to the right instead lf the left? Your frame hugs the left and doesn’t close on the left. How about moving the frame closer to the right? That would of course need the welds to be longer on the left than the right to hug right up on the right and passengers would get in on the left. Great video and TIA! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Im waiting for the second part of the Bus and see the final renovation result 😜 Blessings 🐞🌷🐝💐💟😘
Thank you
Looks good. The kids are gonna have a ton of fun riding around in the Jeep. Hope to run into y'all again. Safe travels and God bless y'all
Thanks Doug!! We’ll be back to TX again!!
Thank you
I think the third seat is fantastic your very talented
Thank you 😊
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻wow amazing! We are a family of 6 as well And now more than ever I want a Jeep 😩
I keep coming back to your video as a template for my 3rd row installation. Thank you for showcasing!
Glad it helped!! One thing I would do differently is move the seat more to the right or up an inch or two so that when the seat lays flat I can shut the tailgate. Other than that I love it!
Great job on this Jeep tour! It looks fantastic and it’s obvious that you covered all the safety features you need. Have fun with your new adventures!
Thank you 😊
From one Loftis to another - impressive engineering project. 👍
Thanks 😎
Look into the Gobi roof rack. Rack that goes over the hardtop but allows the hard top to be taken off without removing the rack
I have looked at those but it’s a 6 week wait from when you order. Very nice racks though!!
Very cool! If you get the exo top, you should be able to mount a Hilift jack on it.
Thank you
I watched this video when came out didn’t own Jeep but was thing of getting now have a jl. Love it stock now....
Wow... pretty cool! Now let’s see if off road with all
The kidos! I bet it will be a blast!
Thank you
Dude! This is awesome. Thank you. How do your kids fit now 4 years later?
We sold the jeep and went to full size SUV
Great job designing your setup. Quality construction. And it will grow with your kids.
i have a wrangler and 4 kids - i love this video- seems like you did a great job- id love to know how its going
Also I’m a small youtuber I started posting yesterday!!!But other then that I also like that you actually respond to you fans and stuff!❤️🤍
Good luck with your channel & yes we try to reply back to our viewers.
Loftis Party of Six - weROAM that is so good if I grow mine up I would do the same
Love it great job thank you for sharing I’m thinking about getting my son a jeep and you made me aware of so many things I didn’t know.
Awsome! We have 4 kiddos and are full time as well. Hubby has always wanted a jeep.
Thank you 😊
This looks awesome and is very reassuring! Have fun! I'm excited for you all!
Looks like a safe and well thought out system for the Jeep. I think you did an excellent job! Maybe you could bolt the jack under one of the seats? Better than having to remember to take it when you leave the motor home.
Thank you 😊
Great job with the Rubicon modification. You guys are going to have so much fun with it.
Thank you
Awesome job. Just a note that if you had shifted seat to passenger side instead of driver side, access would have been easier and tailgate probably would have closed even with seat folded. Love my jeep!
Yes this was something I just wasn’t thinking about. Thank you
Great job! When you get new rims make sure to have the correct offset so you can eliminate those spacers. Like the 3rd row and this would have been great 3 years ago with our family of 5. Now our oldest is off to college so back to the OEM models. 😁
I really like my rims.. but who knows, I might upgrade someday. Thanks for watching!
Great work. Understand few things which can and cant work when we put the third row.
Great video! Can you show us how you tow the jeep behind the camper?
Yep I’ll be doing a vlog on that!! Thank you
Loftis Party of Six - weROAM thank you!
Great video, my husband also drives a Jeep Rubi! I watched out of order and was wondering how 4 kids sat in a Jeep. Lol wranglers have zero trunk space anyway so can’t wait to see what you end up with. Enjoy!
Thanks for watching
Can you share the measurements for the frame? This is a great and a job well done. Been researching ideas and best one I’ve seen.
Sorry I know longer have it
please link the seatbelts and rollbar extension. get a tire carrier with rack mounts and a bumper carrier. it will maintain a lower center of gravity and give more protection for the kiddos. God bless you brother.
Those links are in the description of the video! I am planning on those items you mentioned. Thanks
Nice video and thanks for sharing this upgrade. Also you should try taking off the top with the gate closed so that the giant tire is not on your way. I'm a short person and I had to learn this quick.
Thanks
Definitely an interesting and creative way to make it work for your family. Good job! My only concern would be the 3rd row seat belts. Lap belts should go across the hip/thighs and not the stomach. It's a huge safety issue if you were ever in an accident. Maybe they can be tweaked to fit properly?
Thank you for your concern
Very cool getting a bronco soon and this looks like something I may try to do with it.
Amazing job on the third row! We are also a family of 6. I would love to add a third row down the road. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!!
Can you share the plans for the seat frame?
My dad puts Jeep seats in the back of our Saturn vue's
They work great!
Great Jeep dad! Wish I had this option when my boys were young.. great video
Thank you!
