When I was preparing to labor with my second child, I ran into exceptional advice and it was all I could think of during labor: keep your jaw relaxed. During each contraction that was the only thing I focused on, keeping my jaw soft. From start to finish labor lasted 4 hours and I attribute that to keeping my jaw relaxed. Needless to say, this makes a lot of sense to me!

I was in choir as a kid and teenager, and they would tell me to breathe with my diaphragm. I was physically incapable and couldn't figure out why for years. I only recently found out it's because my hips were tight and pulling on my diaphragm and keeping it from being able to contract and relax naturally. Doing some hip flexor stretches immediately improves my diaphragm function everyday. I'm so curious if anyone else has had this issue. I feel like I'm the only one.

'Breathe with the diaphragm' can be a difficult direction to follow as it's always working! However, tight abdominals and core (which the hip flexors are part of) can restrict movement of the diaphragm. Glad to hear that hip stretches have helped and it's definitely a relationship to explore!

Definitely not the only one lol it’s all on the psoas muscles & everything else around the hips (obliques, glutes, etc)
Crazy enough aside from it also having affected my jaw but also shoulder imbalance. The body is completely systematic so one imbalance will cause another elsewhere. Bc of so much tightness, i also struggled with breathing deep from diaphragm. But one thing for sure to know is where the problem stems from. Stretching, breathing techniques, electrical therapy devices & other methods have helped wonders

I love this combo of modalities. I’m a singer and was not aware there was a connection between the jaw and hips. I’ve been doing fascia release exercises from The Human Garage on YT for a few weeks and have had some major relief from discomfort in my body. Also, Dr. Gabor Mate’s vids talk about childhood trauma being held in the fascia. I highly recommend watching both along with your videos.

And then I look down at my phone and this video is listed as “Suggested” to watch.

I seriously want to cry... I'm 52 and you've just explained why I've been in so much pain and discomfort my whole adult life. I gave birth to my son a few weeks after I turned 18. It was a really difficult labour and he was a BIG baby. Six months after he was born I was walking around slightly leaning to the side, with him on my hip, when all of a sudden my jaw locked up. Anything wider than a straw wouldn't fit between my teeth. A few hours later it released by itself but it was never the same. I've never been able to open it anymore than two a half finger widths. Since that time.. slowly and surely over the years, my whole skelatal structure has pretty much fallen apart. It's curved, it's bent, I can't stand straight. My jaw is totally out of allignment and always hurting. With the birth of my subsequent child, and then my grandchildren.. I noticed the overall problem would suddenly get worse from constantly leaning to the side and carrying them on my hip. I've now reached the point of being in so much pain all the time, I can barely think straight. But at least now I can start fixing the problem and hopefully get my life back. THANK YOU.!!!! xx

My hips, especially right side, lock up, deeply ache and burn, make me walk like I'm 100 years old. I've also got deep burning in anogenital area, a separate issue, I thought. Was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 1991, small fiber peripheral polyneuropathy last year. Good grief.
Had never heard of jaw, hip, fascia connection. Have seen many doctors/specialists, physical therapists, acupuncturists. Craniosacral therapy seemed to help but only a day or so after session.

Very interesting. I discovered connection between coccyx and voice when singing tenor in choir. The more the tension went in my hips and coccyx, the more easily I could reach high notes, albeit only falsetto. In fact I discovered that whereas normally I would struggle to reach top A, but when my coccyx dropped significantly I was able to reach the C above, and on one occasion the Eb above. I have always had a lisp and I have always had a theory that it is related to tension in the coccyx and shoulders. Somehow it causes my tongue to push forward and be too large for the mouth, hence a lisp. About 30 years ago I was studying Alexander Technique and practicing meditation and I got further than I have ever got with it and reached a state that I can only describe as Nirvana. More recently I discovered an Alexander Teacher online and he actually used the expression 'Nirvana in the Neck'. which is a good description of my experience. I also experienced that we actually have two responses to gravity, like the trees. Our upper half actually tries to pull us upward away from earth, whereas our lower half, below the waist pulls us down towards the earth, just like a tree. Our waist represents the section of the tree where it meets the soil. It is a fascinating subject and when I tried explaining it to my cousin a few years she said I had found my vocation. In the end I think it is all about lengthening the spine, which is subject of yoga and as the spine lengthens breathing is improved (pranayama) . I have also discovered the releasing the coccyx is also often the cure for lower back pain.

Omgosh!!!! I discovered this jaw hip connection by accident. I was under personal stress for some time and my jaw was bothering me for a couple months. I finally decided I would have to go to the DDS for a night guard. On the same day I decided it was time to seek dental help, I also realized my hips were hurting (and I do yoga/stretch everyday at least for 10 min) as an equestrian it is a must to have limber pelvis. I dug in to the hips with intention AM and PM and the next AM. Woke up and hips were feeling much better. On my long drive home from the barn I suddenly realized that my jaw was relaxed and not bothering me! I was astonished but did not make the connection yet. Later while pondering the fact that both areas were feeling better, I wondered if there might be a connection and VOILA!! I have found much info to support the jaw hip connection!! So true. Often however there are structural issues like a small and narrow palette where no amount of stretching and releasing will help. I have had my palette widened with a device and will be following up with double jaw surgery this month. 10 years ago, a chiropractor was critizing my posture noting that my head tilt was causing stress all over my body. He completely missed the point that the posturing was my bodies way of making sure i could breath due to my underdeveloped jaw and narrow airway.. nothing would fix this short of surgery. We must look at the whole picture else get into gas lighting terrority. I am hopeful this surgery will help allow my body to relax and hopefully even help with some chronic issues in my legs.

Well done for pointing out this important connection! The exercises are brilliant. I would like to add, however, that your jaw may also be tight because your pelvis and hips are too LOOSE: my Chiropractor explained that the gait motion rippling through the spine is supposed to pump cerebrospinal fluid around, and if one end is too loose, the other overcompensates. During the day your jaw and head build up tension, and during the night when you lie down and the spine is supported, you start grinding your teeth to release it. I have stopped grinding my teeth since I wear a Serola belt for part of the day to stabilise my pelvis whilst on my feet. It doesn't have to be long, maybe an hour total. I used to do a lot of hip opening Yoga in the past, but always suffered with headaches. Now I work on stability not flexibility and it's much better for my body. It's tempting for people who are hypermobile to show off during Yoga, but we're not doing ourselves any favours if we do.

I came across Mike Mew on his Orthotropics channel when I was looking for ways to improve my singing. He has some interesting exercises and ideas for getting things back into alignment. He talks a lot about the position of the tongue, chin and neck. I have found his videos quite helpful and they go along with what was presented in this video.

I found mewing early this year and tried to get enough info to work on it on my own to widen my palate and stop my sleep apnea. That actually improved, but after a few months, I began to have all sorts of issues… knee pain , shoulder pain, even foot pain where I had never had anything wrong before. Every time I exercised it seems I was hurting myself. Recently started wondering if this has all come from my facial posture. Especially since the mewing work has produced even more neck tension than I already had.

    • @SHTMusik
      @SHTMusik Рік тому +2

it definitely sounds like there is something out of alignment somewhere. I remember going to a doctor for back pain and his telling me that the major tension was in my neck not my lower back where I felt the most pain. When doing Mewing-type exercises I have a mantra of hip and shoulders, neck and tongue (kinda like the kids song Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes) that I repeat as I´m exercising and try to relax these four key areas. I have had good results but everybody is unique and if the exercises are causing more tension and problems it sounds like they are disturbing the delicate balance between your hips, back, shoulders and neck. One common problem is trying too hard. I am not an expert but for me proper breathing while doing this kind of exercise is really important as well as trying to keep the area from the hips to the neck fluid, like a wave, and not locking up in any spot. Good luck. @@TheEmaile

@@TheEmaile possibly when mewing the temptation is to clench, making sure you have the teeth in contact. Do you follow Dr Steven Lin? He did a really good post the other day, saying that the important thing is the tongue and the teeth don't really need to be in contact. But the tongue suction is the Holy Grail of mewing. Or try Holographic Breathing - on the in breath you let the jaw drop very slightly, but the tongue remains up and the lips closed.

As a violinist during music college I had an Alexander Technique teacher who constantly pointed out the effects inner tension has on areas such as the neck/jaws/tongue and the pelvis, as well as the knees and feet/ankles.
For a long time I had to learn to relax the pelvis, the neck, etc. in order to relax the whole body.
The sensation of freedom and the sound I then got out of my instrument were immense; I’ve never since been able to repeat this in quite the same way, without his guidance… a real eye opener.

I was left with severe misalignent, a narrow upper palate, breathing issues etc. However, I never realized my pelvic issues / PCOS could be related to that. Thanks for another great video! This was very well made, and informative! I never thought about the link between the jaw and hips. I struggle a lot with jaw tension and now it makes more sense why, since I'm a dancer and tend to get really tight hips! I'll be sure to make a habit of trying to release the hips more in the future.
Also, I really appreciate you putting sources in the description! Unfortunately not a lot of people do that, but I think it's really important since there tends to be a lot of misinformation on the internet. It's so refreshing to see people talk about things based on science and then actually back up their claims with sources!
ps. I love the style and quality of your videos! They're very enjoyable to watch and you can tell there's effort put into them.

Thanks so much for your lovely feedback, Gina. If you do have tight hips and jaw tension, it really could be something to explore! Try and few exercises and see how it feels and if it helps.
I'm glad you appreciate the references - some people see these connections as a bit 'out there' so I really wanted to make sure everything is backed up! Some of the articles give even further insight too so they make great reading.
Thank you for your support, I'm really glad you're enjoying the videos!!

What a sad comment lol. Thanking someone for sources because you have no intuition or ability to think and decent for yourself. Pathetic but typical. Go get boosted sheep.

Thank you for sharing! I was not conscious of the jaw-hip connection which makes total sense. I feel relieved already after a few movements.

Could feel that in the diaphragm, abdomen area then later the hip area. A singer so jaw is fairly relaxed. Excellent.

Fascinating connections! I clench my teeth and have a hip injury from a car accident. Based on the video, it appears these two issues may be reinforcing each other. Time to release the facia!!! Thank you for this helpful content and the links to scientific research.

You are trending Rosie! Thank you so very much for this wonderfully enlightening video, your energy and light beams through and I am grateful to have received that along with the information. I have had such tightness for sitting very often as well as likely emotion trauma and stress in the areas you spoke of and I feel seen thanks to your validation of it. I hope that yoga will help it to release. ❤ all the best

Ive been having a lot of weird unexplainable jaw problems. Asked my surgeon who removed my wisdom teeth and he told me it was normal 🙄. My right side gets stuck and pops and my jaw locks when i yawn. Its been an exhausting battle trying to figure out what i can do to heal myself with limited resources, so thank you

I had the same problem for many years until I found a very good doctor that with a year of rehabilitation, him giving me some jaw ajustments and exercises I went back to normal. The pain took a bit more time to go and I still feel it if I talk or laugh too much but the click is gone!

what you might be facing may be TMJ or something to do with jaw joint issues like arthritis or something, if you have access to doctors, then better to get checked out,
i have TMJ since years/forever, and aggravated after wisdom tooth removal last year, i have jaw joint pain almost every day and almost 90% of the day, also after eating, have jaw alignment issues and can eat only one side mostly since childhood, mine is too severe and almost the full side of face aches and sinuses too gets affected and have pain almost daily multiple times,

@@eeg122 It was a dentist in Barcelona spain, I am from here. My old dentist wasn’t an expert on jaw problems so my mom looked very thouroughly for a new dentist and we found this one that was also an expert on these kind of jaw problems and he really helped. There might also be some kind of doctor like mine in your town, they are hard to find though.
