    Hi,
I was for the first time on board as apprentice. I don´t have any others, sorry. This summer I will go to sea again on another vessel, with another Warstila engine so then I can shoot a video again.
    Thank you for your comment.
    Best regards,
    Jorg

What an epic sound!, I love it!!!

The large green tubes between the injection pumps are for the pushrods which operate the valves; I'd imagine this is a reasonably old engine because it still has these pushrods in it; most prime movers nowadays have hydraulically operated valves which are operated under computer control without cams.

Indicating low cooling water pressure. It takes about 1 min or so to build up, so this alarm on startup is normal :)

I love the sound of a big engine winding up like that!

Thats right, fuel and timing rack

Has no carburetors- this is a diesel engine (duh). This thing was built like a huge ALCO locomotive engine, with separate pumps for each cylinder. The long rod moving rod is called the rack and levers on the rack control the fuel output of the pumps by moving toothed pilot rods in and out of them. The engine, being a modern one, is electronically governed, and so the rack is operated by a large stepper motor.

Washington Estep diesels also had a switching cam to reverse them.

These engines are amazing. Biggest I have worked on are Mack diesel engines. I hear they have a sliding cam shaft with 2 sets of lobes, one for forward and one for reverse. So when you want to reverse you stop the engine slide the cam and it runs backwards.

I dont think people viewing this have any idea at how large this engine is, lets just say it takes climbing 3 flights of stairs to reach the valve covers.

I think Wartsila L 64 is the only 4 stk to be provided with 2 fuel injection plungers so 2 fuel cams! One plunger (shape) is FS/VE and and the other one is VS/FE...

Why do the injection pumps have two racks?

  • @douro20

It's four-stroke, isn't it? And I'd imagine those injection pumps are over six feet tall.

I'm working for Wartsila at the moment (nothing with engines though) but I'm very interested in these kind of engines.
Do you have more of these videos? :)

Work with these engines for many years... They are difficult to overhaul and very unreliable. Especially cylinder heads valve seat cooling
