The main engine aboard the Dutch pilot boat "Castor".
The engine was build at IHC Kinderdijk in 1950.
It's a slow running, directly reversible, air-started 4-stroke trunk piston diesel engine.

All engines like these are old ladies and you must treat them as such, new large ship diesels are like looking at houses - they just dont hit the mark like these, you can hear the 4 strokes easily on this old girl, she is a beauty !!
Those old Diesel engines aren`t still machines
They are creatures with live and soul and they always need
tender love and care!
Great!
I love this engine. It's got more external moving parts than a steam engine. Brilliant.
Roy Cork Both reciprocating marine steam engines ( like those in the movie Titanic), and old marine diesel engines with exposed rocker arms ( like those in the movie Das Boot) fascinate me.
2.35min, thats a fantastic industrial noise!
Great engine sound!
Never seen anything like it, can't believe how slow that runs.
The sound of my youth in the summer holidays... It was so fascinating and i recognise it still is!!!
On the old ship's engines you had to, for example, once every two hours lubricate all rockers by hand, with an old-fashioned oilcan. Lots are modified by putting oil spraying nozzles on top of them. Awesome engine!!
A very nice boat and a beautiful engine. What amazing quality. I could listen to that run all day. We have unfortunately lost the true craftsmanship of yesterday and I bet are no longer capable of producing such a wonderful engine. Great video - five stars. Thank You for sharing with us. I wish I could read Dutch and understand the captions!
blackened is correct. These engines are solid lifter, no oil is put on the valvetrain. That's why you hear them so loudly, even in the exhaust.
@Blankenmarch There´s no gearbox, no reduction, no clutch, nothing.
Just a flywheel with torsional damper, a shaft and a propeller.
The engine can reverse rotational direction, so the ship itself can reverse.
Halfway down the shaft there´s a thrustblock fitted, which conveys the axial thrust of the propeller to the ships´ hull.
Four radial bearings support the shaft down its lenght, two oil lubricated, two grease.
The low rpm provides low wear, and direct coupling to the propeller.
I love it, both sights and sounds. I enjoy these engines where you cna see the parts and hear the chunk, just like the U-boat diesels.
This engine plays a great tune!!!! Love it!!!!!
i love the exposed rockers and the waveform timing! that is so cool! 300 rpm is a lot for an engine with pistons at such a diameter. thats a lot of mass moving so quickly.
it is amazing how these things will still work and keep on working
That engine would run till the end of time. As long as you keep fuel in it.
Amazing!
With the BING in it it could easily pass for a jungle music band!
A very interesting collection of sounds indeed!
And the best part is that it is mobile, if you can call a full size tug mobile. ;)
Thank you.
sounds like my brother trying to play the drums!!!
Cool engine :)
sounds like a hit & miss. puka ka puka pakuka. pure raw unaldulterated POWER!!!
love it
I sailed alot with these engines, they are just suberb. They are not slow running though, but medium, slow would be like 90 RPM. The lub is nescessary and stays in the rockers by putting it in a cup on top of the rocker, and from there through a suctionrope like a lantern. Not due to friction heat, but just wear of the bushes by rough surface.
Lovely! It's got a kind of "malambo" rithm...
A clock i tell you it is a clock!
amazing. Thanks for posting.
A real work of art too
i wish my car sounded like this
what a beautiful sound.
Built to run and run.
machtig geluid !!! kippenvel.
what an amazing sound! wonderful!!
Mooie motor.
Music to my ears! :-)
i can't believe how slowly these engines run. Considering typical car engines run from 4000-8000 rpm on gas and from 3000-4000 on diesel
Thats real music
now thats a real mechanic he works on it running or not!!!
im giving it all shes got captin all 300rpm!!
four stroke with that much pops, This should have two or more pistons
MASSIVE pushrods! =O
Super!,..man.
I have no idea. Ball bearing maybe? I guess if they were ball bearing, they would only need a splash of oil every now & then. I have no idea when it comes to engines of this size. What a monster!
great vid, always wanted to know the reaction to throttle an engine this size. well done man.
BTW: This engine is so cool, Very powerful for its purpose (But still do not want to see this in my auto :) )
As calculated, this device produces about 16000Nm of torque to the propeller, This can make the ship capable to carry very big loads.
Oops, should have read the info. Its a 4-stroke. And a reversible one at that!
Ah, juist!
Groeten,
Mario
cool vid
Mooie motor!
what is meant by trunk piston?
Do u mean crosshead engine?
The cam arrangement is really genius on these type of things.
Bellissimo!!!!!!
Nice beat....:-)
Bizarre to see an engine running so slowly!
Has it ever needed repairs or replacements? If it's been running continuesly for 60 years, im sure certain parts must have worn down?
How does the cam maintain proper valve actuation when the engine reverses rotation?
Very cool engine and great video!
I have been worked with the same kind of engine but this was an MAK 480hp
is a in line 6 right, the idle is at 100rpm right???
that's a engine, nice sound too.
@Polybun: Assuming your refering to the BING in the last bit of the video, your right!
This vid is 3 years old, during the overhaul, we found a partially ruptured lub pipe in the sump, preventing sufficient oil to go to one of the main bearings, piston rod bearing and piston bearing...
After the overhaul, the BING sound was gone. The bearings in question weren't worn down, amazingly...
Our best guess is that the BING sound was caused by this....
Are these engines reversible, or do they employ a reversing gear box.
I would think the entire engine is reversed.
Is that a 2-stroke or a 4-stroke.
I've seen plenty of 2-strokes running at such a low speed, but never a 4-stroke.
Bedankt, we doen ons best!
so, just piston, piston pin/small end, con rod and big end/crank bearing?
Proefdraaien, paaltrek meten, etc.
Ben benieuwd of dat filmpje populairder wordt!
uboot motor?
Yeah well, that's why we've allready got three of those H&S chaps locked up in the fore castle for some time now...
I throw down a bag of rice every other week, and it's a bit leaky down there, so they're all right... :-)
I was going to make that very same comment, lol
de motor kunn ook annersum loopen?
dat is selten
and oil =)
Im wondering how the rockers stay lubed
@loodsbootcastor what is pk@300rpm?how do we calculate the bhp from this?
i want to see the crank case lol
Well that's nice to hear!
Indeed, the clip has some teaching value doesn't it... Old mechanics, though new engines are the same, though smaller...
I've heard one guy wanted to make some techno song with the sound of our Dinosaur :-), though I must say your comment is more appreciated on the Castor!
Cheers!
Mario
ps. in a week we will have finished overhauling the main engine. Painted and running like new, also special attention to the reversing motion, etc.
Don't forget PPE tuner
psi dunno, 1,5bar on crank shaft.
Cylinder liners are lubricated as well, directly through the liner, for lubrication between the pistons and liners.
So what is it?
wow..
Samba!:)
this is awesome reminds of willy wanka driving the bubble machine!
What does 750 pk translate to in horsepower?
hij gaat lekker Views: 17,719
A mouse pas by ??
Haven't see the whole video before to see the cylinders and valves, (Local network problem)
This baby have to give more pops :Di Like a Double Action Diesel :D (Since this is not designed for high speed )
You dont need oil for these rockers, they dont move fast enough to generate a lot of friction that oil is needed to cool down. They are probably on brass bushings.
Add turbo and nitrous, bring her up to about 2500 rpm, move the moon.
What about the speed issues such as "14kts is not enough" ?
Such as interstate travelling in minutes, of getting my job office ?
Or taking an Urgent express cargo from another State in hours ?
I can't admire thg I couldn't use on my daily travels or use its fuel efficiency when marine travelling is not needed, or speed is still a bottleneck.
And think that, can a marine engine still efficient With a lot of instant speed demand ? Is it worth to pray
Just a personal demand question.
A rat??? Between 1.31 and 1.35 left screen running downwards
it must last a trillion miles haha
Uhm...
Since you seem 2b such an expert, I suggest u design and build a popper with less pops :-)
btw, it's a 6 cylinder engine....
Cheers!
muui ding,ik wull man so seggen,ik finn´t schgiet, dat sülske motoren vandaag nej mehr gebout worden, dor sünd nej mehr heel so vööl van disse olln dingers öwer:-(
Whats that thing idle at 50 rpm? LOL
Groeten,
Mario
ps, wat is 1887 ?
@ 2:50 its the targis leaving dr.who
LOL true
LOL perhaps 100hp but 20,000ft/lbs torque
they keep on running forever though, that´s the big plus on these engines.
Low to no wear.
Try finding a BMW engine that has been running for 65 years....
Here a more current video about the motor and the boat

huge weight is never an advantage. Loss in cargo space, etc.
Biggest problem is, again, the huge cost of these machines. 750HP is not spectaculair. There are cars that have that much under the bonnet...... This one is 30 metric tonnes and thus a bit steep compared to a modern fast running engine....
yeah that´s about correct. 186cm diameter, 4 blade, 155cm pitch.
They stopped making these engines because they are too expensive, naturally.
Power to weight ratio is terrible....
Meaning it has 6 pistons....
