- In this video I begin by discussing some of the different scams that I've encountered and heard about while living in Queretaro Mexico. Then I partner up with a special guest, my favorite local UA-camr La Karencita and together we conduct a small test to see if a Gringo Tax exists here in Queretaro.
This video is part of my Mexico travel vlog and although scams are not always seen as part of "safety" I think this discussion should be included when people are talking about safety in Mexico. Knowing about the different ways a traveller can get scammed is a part of safety and security.
This video mainly looks at the Gringo Tax and I feel there is a common feeling of acceptance about this. I personally feel like it's normal and not a big deal and nothing I can do about it, but the reality is that expats and tourists are most likely paying a little bit more than Mexican locals on average and this really isn't a good thing.
If I'm being charged more for a taxi, and gift items, possibly being overcharged at restaurants and invited out by locals who just want me to pay for their night on the town, then I'm being taken advantage of. The issue becomes more concerning when I begin to think about the foreigners living and working here who earn a Mexican salary and how they could be overcharged and taken advantage of unfairly.
I really enjoyed working with La Karencita on this video. It was a lot of fun and also good to work with another creative who understands what it's like to be living and working in this UA-cam world.

As a mexican woman I applaud your effort. I'm actually living in Querétaro, and due to my skin colour, some sellers want to charge me "THE GRINGO TAX"
I cannot believe it! Obviously I won't allow them, but the moment I answer back in fluent spanish and question their attitudes, they will normally go back to the right price. I wiil actually regret to let you know it will happen all over the country, but, as you get fluent in spanish you will be able to handle it! Best of luck!

@@glennis-dankuwel6020Nope..My husband knows the dentist we go to and he told me he charge me gringo tax..He know my husband is well off as he told where we lived in Mexico when we visited. Remember my husband is 100% Mexican as I’m 100% American.
Many 20+years ago I travelled to Mexico for the first time as a college student. I quickly noticed that I got different menus and different prices than locals. By the end of my trip I asked locals to help me call a taxi and get prices for me before most of my purchases. The vendors were very annoyed at my antics.

I grew up overseas between 1979 and 2000. Rule no 1 No speaking in English in public ! Dress like the natives , Learn their customs and traditions and never splash a ton of cash in public. Find out what everyone there earns for a living then match it to the Real cost of living and figure out ways to appear least conspicuous ! When I lived in Munich in the late 1990's I was so happy when Germans asked me if I was from Poland ! I was thrilled ! Personally, in Washington DC the last 20 years it has not been safe to walk the streets of NW DC and no one would show they are blogging on their phones if they were from DC due to inviting Unwanted attention. The goal is to never spark and offense or jealousy ! Humility is very important. Be safe.
Ever been to Uzbekistan? The vendors at the market give you stuff for free just because you are a foreigner. Super friendly people. Hospitality is a big part of their mentality.
Thank you for making this video, This prepared me for my December trip to Qurétaro and more of Mexico. I don’t like being overcharge, but over my travel experiences I have learned to accept the reality and not be frustrated. On the other hand, think about in the beginning who taught local people to charge more when deal with foreigners/tourists? That’s maybe cause by foreigners……

Love the content.. I've travelled a fair amount. I find it best to consider what I would be happy to pay, rather than worry about how cheap I could be getting something for. Much less stress.
Yeah! This is exactly how I've been approaching it here. I have the currency conversion calculator app and when I'm not sure, I check what I'm paying. If I feel it's got that value then I'm good.

That’s the best way to look at it. I’d feel good knowing I was helping a family, etc knowing how Mexicans are so abused by the system.
I’d say that’s the cost of being a foreigner living in a foreign land. 10% doesn’t seem exorbitant. When I travel I tend to investigate the price with several vendors and pick the lowest priced one, then bargain from that point. Always be prepared to walk away. This tactic usually gets me the best price. Price haggling is expected in Latin American counties.
I was ok with the 10 % too but my opinion is changing.
No its not expected, its just an excuse cheap people use to undermine and underppreciate the hardwork and low wagesof the vendors .
Thanks for the video, I am from Canada as well lived for 6 months in Huatulco. I experienced this Gringo tax in markets, restaurant in rental to make me pay for his electricity bill. in visiting me out for me to pay for them. my 1st air bnb was a bad smokey place & refused to give me back my money. But, I had enjoyed the time in a hot place while Ontario was in the cold. Huatulco is a nice, very clean & very safe place. Love Mexico

Jason if you're concerned about a gringo tax, don't give them a tip. Mexico is a bargain compared to the US or Canada.
Not so concerned about the gringo tax but was an interesting idea for a video Karen wanted to do with me.
Here is a Ninja move for anyone shopping at mercados in Mexico: “deme o vendame --state the amount- 15 peso de --state the produce item- naranjas porfavor. Also, the extra piece of produce is called “de pilon” (think baker’s dozen) to get and keep loyal customers. Cool video.

interesting content, difference appears to be minimal, I don't mind minimal upcharges and want to be a benefit to local economy
I pretty much feel the same. The only thing is that there are quite a few expats working in the city for the same salary as their local Mexican co-workers, the expats get slightly over charged on some things. In this case I think it's unfair. For the tourist, I don't think it's a big deal.
Another thing I thought about after making the video is tipping. I always tip and sometimes tip a fair amount if I thin the person or community could benefit. When I started to think about being over charged on some things I realized that my sometimes 20% tip was based on an inflated price that in a way I was already giving a tip and that my 20% was likely 30% more than the "local" price.
Mostly it's just something to think about.
Resort towns along the beach like where I live have a thing called a sunshine tax!
And is a "sunshine tax" the same thing as a "gringo tax"?

I think that anywhere you travel in the world, people believe the locals are over-charging the foreigners, but it's not generally true. More true is that tourist locations will overcharge, and non-local goods will be higher. The Taxi... hard to say but I suspect that came down to estimates by the drivers.
To each their own. I don’t want to live at a place where you have to be on your constant guard to make sure you’re not going to get screwed by the locals. I live out in the country with the Amish as neighbors and I know that I’ll be safe and not be taken advantage of.

Great video, thanks Jason. I will watch Karencita's next. Let's face it: she is more charming than you- or I; she deserves a free mango for her smile alone. I do understand that we have to be careful, but after living in California for decades- I experienced more ways of reaching into my pocket for hard earned cash in California. I get far more angry at large corporations who take advantage or overcharge. Charging what the market will bear is standard business practice n the US: how can we be so resentful here in Mexico.
PS: I just paid 350 for a ride to the airport last week. I did tip on top of that. I would agree that I don't like the feeling of someone taking advantage of me. Looking forward to learning more as you explore the city

Go to any fing resort or sports venue in the US where you pay $5.00 for a hotdog and $3.00 for a darn coke! I went to a Mcdonalds in Washington DC and spent $30.00 for three happy meals!

My wife and I are building something in the city of Guanajuato Mexico. My wife's family is from Michoacán Mexico but we live in Texas. But she speaks Spanish like a native Mexican. On more than one occasion our building contractor has told us. It would be better if I didn't go with them to buy materials. Like lets say if we went to Dolores Hidalgo to buy tile. It would be better if I wait outside the place until the price has been determined (That would be one example that has actually happened). I cant really say if this made any difference. But the man that is doing our project has also done others for none Mexicans. But I will say this in the city just buying normal things. I don't notice they charge me more. But that could be because my wife is normally with me. And she would not let them get away with it.

I got scammed at Edmonton airport by taxi drivers …. It was -34 degrees Celsius and they wanted $50cad for a 6 minute ride … unfortunately it was soo cold that I had no other choice but to pay
It wasn't a taxi, then. Theyre all on standard rate meters. We're not big on scamming forigners here. Everyone pays the same high prices.

Going to any foreign country where you don't speak the language fluently is an open door for trouble. They now have a small device you speak into and it translates, some in many diffrent laungeges. I speak pretty good spanglish and that was a huge draw back, especially as they speak so fast in spanish. Wish I would of had one of those little devices when I was down there. It would have made life much easier especially if you have a rub with the local law enforcement you will be at their mercy and not knowing the language is not a good answer.

If you are moving to Mexico please don’t bargain. People might just try to charge you a little more but, even at that, it’s cheaper than what you would pay at home. These people work hard, don’t complain.
Please, just enjoy the Mexican culture and the beauty of the country. In Canada foreigners are taxed at least 30% more! You’ve got it made!

Fyi, Mexico's Non-residents (those in Mexico on a work visa/permit) pay 15% to 30%. Mexico’s corporate tax rate is a flat 30%.

Hi Jason, I am a new subscriber but not new to Mexico as I have been in Merida for past 10 months. Planning on traveling for the summer Central Mexico as don't want to be in the Yucatan as is damn HOT. So I am very excited looking to relocate as I like Merida enough but not crazy about plus Yucatan kind of one dimensional-jungla, ruinas and cenotes pretty much. So I have my sights on Queretaro many reasons and know you live there so if you could just give me your overall first impressions of the city and comment on as many "Mexicans" tell me that Queretaro is a beautiful city but BORING! Yes I did watch great video. Specifically was hoping for a response around whether Queretaro is Boring as this is what I hear. I have lived in Merida and to me anyway Merida is damn boring. Look I am a young retired I don' need fun and excitement all the time but for example southern Mexico is VERY conservative so good food scene until maybe 2pm and then hard to find many restaurants open in the evening except in Centro and then tend to be tourist trap places many of which I still have not eaten at and don't plan to. So yeah that's what I am interested in knowing can I eat easily in the evening decent places/varied, are there bar/restaurants open in evening or just a bar to have a drink to get out of house (I don't drink) but enjoy being around people. Your best video I think so far was on loneliness in a new country/culture/language barrier. Any thoughts comments would be greatly appreciated.
@@thomasalexander8210 I don't think you'll be bored if you're looking for a restaurant or a watering hole. I think Queretaro has a lot to offer if you have transportation or willing to taxi/Uber/public yourself around. I think your best bet is to give it a try like I did and see how it fits. There are a lot of restaurants but whether you like them is a different story.
Could have taxi'd to one location with the same driver- and ask to be taxi'd back to orginal location by taxi .. should be the same mileage
Sorry, one more comment. The gringo tax, where it exists, is what I feel is fair payment for the gentrification that is ongoing. Canadian here too. Ottawa :)
An understandable point of view but (especially in Queretaro) the gentrification is from Mexican locals who are moving from Mexico City. There is only a very small expat community in Queretaro and so it's not foreigners who are increasing the cost of living. People always look at the foreigner as the cause of gentrification but of course gentrification exists around the world and simply occurs when people start investing in an area and prices go up.
Of course, gentrification is an issue I think about a lot. The thing is, on the other side of the coin would be the idea of charging less to the people who have less. A silly idea when in fairness equal and fair pricing is the easiest solution.

Hey, man, like you, I'm a gringo. Regarding friendly local strangers offering to show you around....they're not charging you any tour guide fee, right? Paying their way for a day out with you is polite etiqite...and a good deal for you and I. My experience is that anybody who has the free time to show you around is likely between jobs and probably doesn't have the extra $$ to send on traveling and eating out.
GRINGOS ARE ALWAYS CHARGED MORE UNLESS YOU ARE ACCOMPANIED BY A MEXICAN. MY WIFE IS MEXICAN AND A FEW PLACES SHE DOES BUSINESS WITH CHARGE HER MORE BECAUSE THEY KNOW SHE IS MARRIED TO A GRINGO. ENJOYED THE VIDEO AND WILL CHECK OUT BOTH OF YOUR VIDEOS.

Paying a little more for a small purchase isn't really being scammed. Being deceived on a large transaction is a concern.

This would'nt be the case if you live there for a good wile, many honest vendors do have the prices on the items. Ive had nothing but good expirances in Mexico.

As a gringo living many years in Mexico I don't feel that I pay more and often feel like I'm getting a better deal. Of course being fluent helps. My Mexican friends all believe that there is a gringo tax though

This suppose to pay her after for the help and finally can be the same or worse. The best is to know the fair prices and after be a bit generous because as usual the small merchants are selling cheap knowing the poverty of most of the people. In another hand in this poor countries they learned to take advantage for whatever they can knowing that as usual from the big world companies to the local politicians everyone takes advantage to a bigger scale. So you are for them someone having a better life just because of the better place you was born, which is not completely wrong.

Thank you for making the difference clear. When I heard ''50 pesos'', I thought- no prob, the man has to feed his kids''. THEN ya'll told me that it would buy lunch, so that's kind of steep. I don't mind sharing the wealth, it's just that I don't have much of it, myself!

Your premise at the end of the video is that there is a 10% gringo tax. I don't see it - if nothing else, it will put Americans and Canadians at ease that this is not rampant, at least in Queretaro. I did not see anything that would qualify as a gringo tax. Only the doll and the taxi, both of which you can bargain down the price or walk away. That being said, any tourist should be wary and do your research - and if you think you are bring ripped off, WALK AWAY. Or if you cannot, just pay. The price is likely going to be less than an equivalent in the US or Canada.
I always find it interesting when people argue that it’s ok because the price is lower than in the US or Canada.
So, a Canadian or American who now lives in Mexico should be ok with paying more than their Mexican neighbours even though they likely earn a similar wage (now residing in Mexico)? If that’s the case, a Mexican who now lives in Canada or the US should pay less because they are originally from Mexico? Or should they also pay more because they are a foreigner?
You should live in France. There is no higher prices for Americans than for French. It's possible to live there without speaking French beyond a few phrases. What a way to live your life by living in a country where you don't speak Spanish.
I've experienced the same thing in many parts of Mexico, you're not Mexican so you pay more.
In the USA, the word "gringo" (Caucasian) is derogatory & a form of racist discrimination. Mexicans in the USA would be outraged if people said a derogatory name. It's ironic that the Mexicans will charge you more if you speak Spanish, but in many parts of the USA Mexicans refuse to learn English,
Gringo actually refers to people from the USA, not caucasions in general but it is true that it's derogatory.

Thanks for this info , it was very interesting . I think people get ripped off no matter where you go . I just don’t patronize that place once I don’t trust the vendor . Same as Canada . You go for decent price and if the staff are attentive and knowledgeable. Of course not knowing Spanish is a big hurtle for anyone going and living in Mexico . I like your straightforward personality . You don’t beat around the bush, you tell it like it is and don’t sugar coat what the reality of the situations you are dealing with .☺

I try. I mean there are a lot of good hearted people making videos who think they need to create a positive marketing video that doesn’t really show what the reality is. I just try to share my perspective, it’s not necessarily correct all the time but it’s my experience in the moment.

you have to learn to bribe cops, keep only 5 dollars US in your wallet, when the cops pull you over for some bogus reason just say your sorry and open up your wallet and show them the 5 so they can reach in and take it, they'll take everything so just keep a 5 in there. I learned this the hard way when some crooked bicycle cop stole a $100 US From me cause he said I made a turn in the wrong lane. LOL, I probably paid for his kids college.

You're not being taken advantage of by going out on the town and paying the locals for an education. That is a valuable experience.

@@TrailguidePictures Even though you think you're being taken advantage of, IF the locals are giving you an education on local customs and language, that has value. It's very simple. Americans expect everyone to cater to them. You can't have that attitude in a different country.

Btw, I'm not "American" and don't expect anyone to cater to me. Lose the prejudice, it doesn't make you look very good.
In my experience, the better I got with my Spanish, the less I worried about being overcharged just because I was a gringo (Canadian). This, at least, was how I found it in Oaxaca, when I was there many years ago, and about three years ago in Merida. But I suspect you're right that every business is in the business of doing business and trying to make as much as they need (not necessarily as much as they can, as it seems to be in the U.S. and Canada). I found vendors warming up to me when I spoke decent Spanish with them and when I accused them of asking too much and they bargained with me, we ended up with smiles on our faces. Besides which, it helps with practicing your Spanish. In other words, it's like they're your temporary Spanish teacher, so maybe it's nonetheless worth the extra "tip" you end up paying. However, any time I've been in Mexico, I've never, ever felt "ripped off." So many things are much cheaper than they are in Canada, I figure it all comes out in the wash. As in that famous Seinfeld episode, it's all sort of even-Steven in the end. Just sit back and enjoy your time there. Mexicans on the whole are quite honest and respectful and are beautiful people whose culture I very much admire. In Merida, for instance, I accidentally overpaid for my bus ride, the total charge usually was about10 cents Canadian. I gave him 12 cents without realizing what I'd done. The driver could very easily have kept the 2 cents and I never would've known the difference. But he quickly offered me my change, telling me I'd given him too much. On a different occasion my wife left her wallet in a washroom at a huge mall in Merida, but within 15 minutes the guards there had tracked it down and not a cent was missing. Credit cards and everything else were still there. So our experiences are varied and different, but that's life, eh? Enjoyed your video and love La Karencita.

I like how you accidentally bargained your way out of the Gringo tax by confusing 60 with 70, only to end up exactly where they quoted Karen. Maybe that's the answer, to assume the first price everyone quotes you is 10% inflated, so offer them 90% of that price instead?
Playa Del Carmen and the rest of QR (and, I suspect, other tourist traps around the country) have another form of Gringo Tax, imposed on anyone too lazy to deal with local currency. The main drag of PDC has more ATMs dispensing US dollars than pesos, and many businesses helpfully post US dollar prices along side the peso prices. Invariably, the dollar prices reflect a horrendous exchange rate.
