My daughter posted a tweet that said, "One unarmed veteran and one drag queen saved more lives in Colorado than 376 cops with a $4 million annual budget did in Texas. I never again want to hear about how kids are unsafe with drag queens." Amen sister!!! 🙌
I second the motion!

Thank You Keely!

Thank you for having the integrity to pause your wonderful humor to address a topic that shouldn't be ignored. I have appreciated you as a comedian as long as you've been around, but the role you've come into on this show, as yourself, has proved your quality of character. You are an institution beloved by so many partially because you have the honor to speak truths like these. Thank you Stephen Colbert; I hope to watch you for many, many years to come.

Why I love him and Jon Stewart. They don't use comedy to hurt, but instead to heal.

Well said. 👏👏👏
I can confirm that my last several conversations on dating apps have been someone trying to either get cash or bank information within about 10 minutes. Total waste of time.
Bravo to those creating apps to waste these scammers’ time on behalf of the rest of us 👍
Here's a thought - have a hobby you're passionate about? Join a group of like minded and you might surprise yourself.
I thought that's just what dating is.. haha :-D I guess it's been a while.
If they are super hot and you are super not... you know better.
The scammers out number the real women on my app! It wasn't like this 20 years ago. I was on Yahoo Singles (or whatever) and the phonies were 1 percent or less.
Pretty sure it's going to take more than 10 minutes for most people to find the love of their life or even just someone they'd tolerate spending the rest of their life with. Personally, it all depends on what you put into it and luck. I've dealt with many scammers and people I didn't click with yet I met my wife on a Facebook dating group. Focus on developing friendships and socialize with people who share hobbies you're passionate about and you might have a better shot. When you focus on developing real connections with people instead of trying to catch a good one you're more likely to find a good partner. Also, scammers have used [the promise of] relationships and sex to con people in-person for a long time now so it's hardly exclusive to online dating apps, we just called them conmen instead.
Heroic politicians. Heroic policy makers. Heroic lawmakers. Heroic judges. Heroic civil leaders...all of this. Stephen, you brought tears to my eyes. Truly did. Those words are overdue and need repeating hourly.
Indeed!
C'mon now. We know Republicans are the problem. They are whores to gun industry dollars.
Imagine, weaponizing the first and second amendments against their own people to maintain the chess game.
His speech was wonderful until he talked against the second amendment saying it's a failure.
@@joshuafoley302 The extremist absolutist interpretation of the Republicans is a failure. It doesn't match the original intent of the Framers and has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands each yea. Yet the Republican politicians stick to the extremist interpretation so they can win elections.
THAT is not wonderful. I've been a gun owner all my life and I consider US gun policy to be insane. They are MUCH less regulated than my cars. (BTW cars are protected by interstate commerce: main constitution, not an amendment. Yet heavily regulated to save lives.)
This is heroic too. Thanks Stephen for your words on Club Q and gun violence.

It's true. So many people with a platform stay away from the topic of gun violence because it's so touchy. So yeah, in a way this is also heroic.
Thank you "heroic patrons" for keeping this last shooting from becoming another Pulse massacre. Thank you Colbert for reminding us that these don't need to *keep* happening.
Stephen, if human decency was contagious you could be our superspreader.

My dating app experience was borderline traumatic, borderline frightening, awkward, demoralizing and I was catfished once BUT I then met the one. We would never have otherwise crossed paths. My life is the best it's ever been. I'm just saying even on a free app nothing comes without a price but it seems small now. Worth it.
I also found the love of my life on a dating app. It **does** happen, but I feel many people are very naive. You have to be realistic, which it seems is a quality few people possess.
Online dating apps are the best advocates for staying single😂
Totally agree!!!!
Total waste of time. Most women on tinder are just there to recruit Instagram followers
@@adamwelch6217 I roll my eyes forever when people ask me do you have instagram. who cares?!
Or just a tool that's only as effective as how you use it. You have to separate the real from the fake or con-people in-person just as online so it's really not much different than people purport. The irony is that scammers on dating apps are pretty easy to spot too so it's not like it really wastes that much time.
@@seandobbins2231 i’ve yet to meet a UN doctor stationed in yemen, in person, asking for money :)) mostly because they don’t exist so try making a different assumption 😉
Dating app fatigue is real. The apps say they're designed to help you find love, but they aren't. The goal is to keep you in a state of *thinking* you'll find love, or thinking the person you just messaged is the one. They manipulate you emotionally. I'm glad I'm not alone in ditching the apps. I hope they all go bankrupt.
That's the case of literally every matchmaking service since the beginning, well before dating apps or even dating websites. They make money on selling a promise, not actually getting it, however to be fair, there's no way to ensure it though because love and relationships don't work that way. That said, there aren't good chances of finding someone if they only use a dating app, but some do so it's up to the individual whether or not it's worth it to them.
Hello im from the philippines
Dating apps are horrendous. I tried POF and got so many matches that wanted me to go sign up for some weird website. I tried tinder for a while until I found out that guys were right swiping on every single profile in an attempt to increase their chances with hooking up with someone. I think I swiped on maybe 3 or 4 profiles that actually interested me, but I’m sure I was lost in a wave guys that swiped on their profile. Even then when I did match they never responded. Women were just using it as an ego boost. Never really intending to date anyone. I just went back to meeting women at bars. I’ve had more luck this way.

Powerfully profound comments regarding the heroism of patrons, teachers, bystanders and lack of it in our politicians! Thank you for this message which should be on billboards and every media site.
The apps brought this onto themselves. They all rushed to copy Tinder, simplifying everything to just a swipe. When OkCupid started it was a much better, deeper platform where you could actually learn something about someone. Now it's just a Tinder clone filled with bots. Most of them are
Very much agree about your comment on OkCupid. Used to be a great website > 10 years ago.
The apps have built in algorithms that require you to pay to even match now as well. Your profile is buried and don't show for ppl you have swiped right on and vice versa unless you upgrade
It doesn't help that most all of them are owned by Match. I've had healthier and better relationships from hook-up sites than dating sites.
Yea, I remember using OkC some 8 ish years back. Likes and matches were kind of pointless as you could freely browse profiles and message anyone that interested you. It led to a lot of interesting and pleasant conversations and a few people I met are still friends to this day. There was a lot less pressure on needing to have a romantic connection to get to know people.
But having recently seen what has become of the site, I can only weep for it. You can only see profiles that are pushed to you in a queue. You can only message someone after liking them and they will only get that message after a match happened. Gone is the low pressure environment, gone is the open nature to freely get to know who you want to get to know. It's just a tinder clone that is even less intuitive.

There’s no reason people with a history of violence should be able to access firearms. People lose rights all the time for doing bad things. Access to firearms should not be any different. The bar needs to be way higher.
Then disarm the military and police
When the second amendment was written, it took five minutes to reload a single shot.
Thanks for this perspective!
And US had 100 times smaller population. I think the official census was around 3 million in 1780s but even if it was 10 million, it was a very different place that reequired a very different approach.
It was also written Two hundred years ago when people lived in remote areas with no law enforcement so protecting yourself was a necessity. Now All it protects are gun nuts wanting assault weapons. Make the law say you can own one handgun per household,no more.
Also, anyone who has read the 2nd Amendment and has a functioning brain should know that "a well regulated militia" is what we now call the National Guard. Not a member of the NG? Then I guess this doesn't apply to you.
YES! We don't keep same road rules now as in Model T years; why on earth keep that old amendment unaltered for million-times-stronger weapons now!?
"Oh, your knees don't sound like a coke can full of baby teeth!?" I laughed so freaking hard
Appreciate hearing some real comments on gun violence.
Fully agree with his 2nd amendment comments. It’s not what was intended or is a good way of legislating gun control
Yup. The Founding Fathers crafted our Constitution in such a way that it could be changed, or AMENDED, later. They knew that technology and society would advance and so the Constitution would have to be malleable in order to change with the times.
Unfortunately, Repubs are still stuck in the 1700's. And it shows.
The 2A was twisted and misinterpreted by the alt right and NRA gun lobby. It was originally intended as a means for individual states to form an organized militia for the purpose of defending against foreign invaders (ie. the British at the time) and to help put down local rebellions (often slave revolts like the Nat Turner Rebellion).
It was **never** intended for militias to rebel *against* the federal government. It was the exact opposite intent; to defend the homeland and *protect* the federal government (again, from foreign invaders, local rebellions and slave revolts).
@@arcturionblade1077
George Washington himself gathered a militia to put down the “whiskey rebellion” in western Pennsylvania. So George Washington did not use the militia to put down government but to protect government, and ask yourself, would George Washington tell you if you don’t like the way he’s leaving, just shoot him? No! George Washington would say if you don’t like the way he’s governing to get out and vote! Republicans, stop being morons!
@@arcturionblade1077 Yes, and it was also largely made irrelevant by the full time funding and staffing of a professional military. We now have Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, and the various National Guard groups, which IMO supplant the need for militias made of civilians. If some bad shit goes down in your state, ANY state, it will be the National Guard, not some podunk "militia" with no real organization or communications or logistics or modern weaponry or transport or funding, that does something.... lol The Republicans who think their paintball team can take on the US Government are abject morons who deserve to lose to the US Government. The best dating app of all is "engagement". I don't mean the kind with the ring on the finger (though eventually that could be the case). I mean putting your phone in your pocket or purse, brushing your teeth (mouthwash doesn't hurt either), and heading over to a social setting that ISN'T a pub -- such as the library, a supermarket, a volunteer activity, or a free university lecture. Say "hi"; chat a little (just a little -- don't appear like a stalker); help somebody with something; ask someone a question you think he/she could answer and who would look smart while doing it.
I just don't comprehend the love affair with guns 🙄
You don’t comprehend people possibly needing to protect themselves or their families or hunt for food?
Speaking as an introvert...you're never too young for emotional exhaustion.
Thank you for saying out loud what a lot of us are thinking in regards to the Colorado tragedy and the 2nd amendment. I hate that all the strong supporters that want to continue with current laws keep forgetting about the "regulated" part. If they are using it to murder innocent people, it doesn't seem well regulated to me.
You are clearly poorly educated if you don't understand what 2nd amendment says -- it says nothing about being limited to militia. It outlines that the government can MAKE NO laws limiting the right to keep and bare arms. Private people owned warships and cannons, and any claims we should limit it today because you don't fear muskets is frankly silly.
@@ZarkowsWorld It's adorable that you can't manage to offer a cogent counterpoint without resorting to insults.
This is what the 2A actually says. Perhaps it is you who needs to brush up on your reading comprehension.
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
FYI, only the poorly educated post snark while confusing bare and bear. 🙄
@@SheilaR.08 It is sad, and perhaps pathetic, that you don't know what the and amendment actually says and means.
It is very clear, the ability for people to defend them self, including to form a militia against the local government, is such a crucial aspect of citizens rights, that government has no right to enact any legislation to restrict it.
This is SUPER-CLEAR, if you bother to read any of the supporting writings -- since you clearly have a problem with reading older English. Perhaps you should have stayed in school?
Thanks for speaking up Stephen! I have a loved one who's in that community.
I need more than a like button for the first part of this segment. Thank you Steven

My big gripe with dating apps is I swear to God people just go on there to string people along, Like they talk to you for a week and you try to make plans and they always say they’re busy or something always happens and then they barely talk to you after that
So the socially anxious are more likely to use an app. Extroverts just go to the club and talk to drunk patrons. Therefore the type of person to get in their own head and cancel is an app user. Just go to the club, I know the music sucks and the drinks overpriced but if you stick around all night I can assure you someone will ask you to go home eventually.

yes. dating apps, and websites are a huge waste of time, money and life. the best way is meeting at work or through friends.
With work you have to be very careful, depends on the rules. People often meet through hobbies. Also websites that are hobby oriented, not dating websites.
Some people do meet through dating websites, I guess they just sift through all the robots or whatever.
Small pool when you live in a rural area and telecommute 100%

Scam dating has been going on for a long time. I find it very easy to pick up on and usually let them know there's a check at a Western Union that's a total inconvenience to them. lol
Go Steve! Thank you for your words of truth.
Not my truth
Every so often I’ll try a dating app again thinking it’s probably not good to spend so much time in my house. I’ve noticed that they’re now full of scammers. I’m pretty good at spotting them, so I never really get to the point where they’re asking for money. But it’s disappointing. They’ve spoiled an entire industry that has helped people connect with other at a time more than ever people really need connection.
What are some tips to spot scammers in these dating apps?
@@annasmith3257 It’s subtle, but these are some things I watch out for. Of course one on its own doesn’t say much. I look for combos.
Picture looks professional. Sometimes they aren’t professional, but something just seems staged or off. If you are good enough with computers, you can do a reverse image search, but I only was able to confirm one this way. I’m not that good with computers though. Also, you can look up catfish photos on Google to see what kinds of photos are used to get familiar. In the one I caught, the real guy was a pilot that does UA-cam videos. I can’t remember now what the catfish said he did, but there was something about the photo by the plane that made me question.
Love bombing, trying to act like he’s in a relationship with you or he’s in love early in the conversation before really getting to know you.
Not answering your questions, his initial messages seem scripted or irrelevant to your last message. Ask very specific questions that require thoughtful answers or factual information. Some guys just don’t like to write a lot, but a catfish will sound like he’s having an entirely different conversation than you are. For example: You: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? Him: As I said my dear, I’m so grateful to have found you. I’m looking forward to a life with you. You are the woman I’ve been searching for. (Also an example of love bombing.)
They end up telling you they are now living or staying somewhere different than what their profile shows. Military photos are a common one, with them saying they are stationed overseas.
Grammar errors that don’t match what they’re saying about themself that would indicate English is a second language, but there is nothing about them that would indicate they weren’t born in an English speaking country. Pronouns, plural, articles, verb tenses are common ones. Of course, we don’t want to be racist about it, but look for patterns and if they make sense.
Then a big one is just use your intuition. Intuition is your subconscious brain recognizing something doesn’t fit a usual pattern and causing you to feel uneasy before consciously identifying what is wrong.
If I had been on dating sites more recently, I may have been able to list others, but these are the biggest clues I look for.
Why is it so easy for people in the US to get a gun? Even the police over here don't open carry. You certainly can't walk into walmart and just pick one up. That' just insane to me.
Because of the 2nd amendment to our constitution. There is a bit in there about the right to bear arms being well regulated, but it seems that has been forgotten.
@@dischannelomine260 I could understand that during war times or when the US was carving out it's independence... why do you even need firearms now? How bad are things that you need a gun in your own home with easy access to ammo and enough spares that people start a collection of them?!?!
Walmart used to sell em. I think every mentally stable non-violent American should have one
Thank you Stephen Colbert for your calling out the cowards in Congress and in the Courts who will not stand up for Gun control, and Thank you to the Heroic Patrons who stopped that murderer. This segment of the Late Show was terrific.
Why does Stephen Colbert not run for office? South Carolina could sure use someone like him, especially considering one of their current Senators, Graham.
The politicians stirred up this rhetoric for their own political agenda.
Even though it's an indirect link, I still think any politician that incited violence should be held accountable.
Why are politicians not held to the same anti discrimination standards as the rest of the country? An athlete had a ban of several games because of antisemitism. Demonizing LGBTQI+ should be handled in a similar fashion and nobody excluded. Freedom of speech is not meant to demonize people.
Maybe a non partisan ethics commission can administer consequences for inciting politicians. Consequences could be: not working in committee the coming month, apolosizing, doing something positive for the specific group. Maybe: three times and you are out?
And this would apply to all groups: dragqueens; evangelicals; homosexuals; jews, blacjs, asians, women, atheists, republicans, democrats etc. Etc.
You could still address problems but you need to be able to proof it. If a subset of homosexuals is into grooming, then you should for sure expose that BUT you need to be able to proof this or have a clear indication that that is happening.
Dating apps are not worth it. People can barely be trusted when you meet them in person, why would I want to trust some stranger online? No.

If you're not getting scammed by your dating app, you're doing it wrong.
Thank you, Steven Colbert, for speaking up when politicians and the justice system goes mute! You are our hero!! 👏🏼👏🏼
And speaking of heroes...Stephen is a big one for speaking up.
🙄
Thank you Stephen, for your beautiful words of wisdom and compassion.
Love how he supports the band and promotes their gigs!!🥰🥰
Heroic politicians and Supreme Court....YES PLEASE!!! Stephen, please take your message to the capital and beyond
Love the band and SO excited that Ms. Santos has an album.
Love overcomes hate and music is love's most salient language.
I totally agree. I'm not against guns for sport but NOBODY needs an assault rifle and those who want to own assault weapon must have a licence and be on a NATIONAL REGISTER for background checks so they cannot just go to a next state to get one. No more of this nonsense of buying a weapon in a store with your breakfast serial and definitely NO MORE SILLY LOOPHOLES that avoid background checks, such as gun shows! Every gun holder should go basic training (after background checks) including gun safety before they get their licence just like we have to have to drive a car, and every gun owner must be held personally responsible for any misuse - so if a son goes on a rampage with his parent's weapon, his parent is also charged for murder for enabling his son an access. An unlocked weapons cabinet with ammunition inside is no use is a joke, never mind leaving bullets in! Only people who shouldn't have guns are against gun control. However, gun control won't stop mass murderers or crazies who already own a gun, but eventually the incidents will go down drastically and America can join the rest of the humanity. Of course, you can commit a murder with a knife, even a mass murder, as they did in England but the numbers will inevitably be small compared to the number of people you can kill with a rifle in the same time period.
It's great to see the band back and the interaction with them
What does it takes to stop a bad guy with a gun?? Easy a good guy with BALLS!
Or we could start enforcing existing gun laws 🤷♂️
If only the people in power had the same courage as this patrons. Preach Mr. Colbert!
Forget the scammers on the dating apps. What about the fact that the apps themselves are created by scammers.
Here's my litmus test of how you know you know when something is a scam and you should delete it and move on....
If you have to pay just to be able to message women then it's a scam.
💯
Shout out to the Stephan plugging the band before the segment. They work hard to become studio musicians on such a big platform but rarely get the not spotlight they deserve
So glad he took time to highlight his band! Great helping hands up holding those white cards!
Call out Tucker Carlson, not just spineless politicians.
Yucker and Yawn are horrible people.
Been at it for 2 years, across 5 different apps. Emotional fatigue?! More like:
EMOTIONAL DAMAGE!!!
i love that stephen is doing this. Hes so funny and a really good person. i hope that there are always people like him in this world
I loled at the winds of winter joke
So true. Almost got scammed but recognized the signs. He asked for money.
THANK YOU for highlighting the band members. I knew they are remarkable artists. It is great for them to get a little love on the Internet.
I turned 40 this year. I'm beyond emotional fatigue. I just give up. I assume I will die alone. I miss basic non-sexual physical contact and intimacy. I miss making a woman smile. I miss having someone to talk to and spend time with.
Stay strong and enjoy every day. You may meet someone in a least expected situation. Just be open for meeting your person.
I literally laughed when Stephen said "Online dating is the hot new trend in dating for the last 30 years." Yep, although intended as a joke - my wife and I actually met online 28 years ago. We pre-dated the internet and met over a local online BBS (kids....ask your parents about those, lol).
BBS 😄👍
The perp violated the "red flag" laws, however the Sheriff in that area refuses to enforce them. He SAYS he will enforce the laws if someone breaks the law, but this killer broke the law at least twice and the Sheriff did nothing. This allowed him to get ahold of guns and do T. Carlson's dirty work. We need to sue the pants off that sheriff.
"Heroic politician" .. oxymoronic. Never would have put those 2 words together. But Stephen is right! That's exactly what we need. Heroic politicians.
It's very anger inducing to see how it's up to a Hispanic disabled veteran and a bunch of transpeople that had to defend themselves. Because the cops sure as shit won't.
I glanced at the thumbnail for this video and misread Bumble as Bumhole... First thought was; I'm amazed at how specific these dating apps are getting!
I know a gay man that would love that joke.
I saw the title and was immediately like "The scam is being tricked into trying hard to get a date, then having to pay for it, say thank you, go home alone and never hear from them again."
Whoever wrote the “heroic patrons” bit of the monologue deserves a fat raise and a firm pat on the back. Spot on.
Re: Colorado tragedy…
RIGHT ON MR. COLBERT
So effen true.
👍🙏🏻👍🙏🏻👍🙏🏻
Makes me long for the good old days when my parents met in a cult.
Hahaha 😂 I mean love may come from surprising places.
“Yelp for human beings” 🤣🤣🤣
We all need to treat each other better. That's the real solution
Speak for yourself
thank you, stephen. i agree with your message. more people need to speak out, in this manner. thank you.
The band joining Dave Matthews on Friday was OUTSTANDING!! They were incredible. Please let them jam on the UA-cam segments more. Their talent is incredibly impressive. Very grateful I was able to see them live at MSG! A pleasant surprise.
Stephen. Thank you, thank you. Your comments on the Club Q shooting were spot on. If only politicians would have a backbone.
Stephen (& watchers of this podcast), I salute your words and ideas. Yes, let's get some "heroic legislators" to pass a bill making this kind of violence ILLEGAL and UNETHICAL. The shooter should spend the remainder of his miserable life in jail or a psych ward, no questions asked.
