I've been a dedicated bass fisherman since 1969 at age 7 here in central Florida. I fish for bass today more than ever. During all this time, I became a serious trophy bass hunter. And I learned decades ago, for ALL top water baits, you NEVER set the hook immediately, or you WILL loose that fish 90% of the time. YA HAVE TO FORCE YOURSELF TO WAIT UNTIL YOU ACTUALLY FEEL THE FISH AFTER THE STRIKE. THIS USUALLY TRANSLATES TO ABOUT A 2.5 TO 3 SECOND WAIT. One of two things will happen: either the fish still has the bait and has now totally engulfed the bait for a good hook-set........or the fish missed or rejected the bait by spitting it out. In the case of the latter, there's really nothing you can do about it..........but make a quick follow-up cast with a weightless soft-jerkbait where you can only hope that same fish will turn & take your bait again. If it rejects your 2nd offering........just forget about it and continue on, because that's why we call it "fishing" instead of "catching".

Awesome approach to explaining how bass react and go for lures! This helped me land a big bass recently that was under floating matted grass, I waited for her to put pressure on the line and then set the hook! Didn't miss her at all! While frog fishing I had this video run in the back of my head over and over each time I made a cast! Thanks for posting amazing videos like these to educate us!

People also bend those hooks out slightly to get a better hookup ratio with compormising the weedlessness just a little. Ndyakangler does it in a frogging video.

Cool video. It's neat to see how they hit it from underwater. It's really difficult to wait and set the hook. It feels like a eternity.

I'm fairly new to fishing & I was missing a few strikes on my last trip so I decided to wait until the fish really got a good hold on my lure before I set the hook & it gave me better results! Only lost 1 fish after that but he fell off just before entering the boat. It's nice to see the science behind this, so interesting!

Missed one big bass yesterday and now I missed two today. First time frog user, I read about it being used for northern pike. Up in northern Minnesota seems like it would be a great place to research and come up with the next amazing fishing tip!!!

I find using a smaller frog does it. I also hook low and away as opposed to high depending on if im fishing off the boat or not. because most times they hook themselves with that motion.

Great info here. All the big bass I've caught have all been off of the booyah pad crasher. I always wait 2 to 3 seconds before setting the hook. Even when I use plastics. I wait before setting the hook.. you can usually tell they're on if your line is running

New sub! I frog fish all the time and never really have trouble missing fish. My brothers and my dad often miss 90% of the fish that bite their frogs, I'll make sure to tell them to wait a little longer even though I usually dont wait more than a second. I always tell them a hard, well-timed hookset is important as well as starting to reel in the fish as soon as possible to keep tension.

This isn't just a topwater, or frog, issue. I often had trouble missing on a short line, even when I could see the fish, and it had the bait "in its mouth". But, the surest way to hook up seems to be to wait long enough for them to inhale, expel water, and clamp down. Hit them then and you have the best chance of striking flesh. Jimmy, does this sound right?

This is common method in fishing snake head in Thailand. When you fishing with hollow body frog, you almost never set the hook right away. You wait about 4-5 second or longer, release the line to see if lure is in fish mouth, check line tension, if you are sure, then you set the hook.

Super slow motion action using 2K fps makes it easy for us to see exactly where the hook is located in the mouth of this bass. Designing a trigger mechanism for the hook to extend itself at the precise moment can help with that hookset. Okay you tinkering wizards, what do you think?
