The Pot - Justin Chancellor & The "Funk" Rhythms Of Tool! (Tabs & Tutorial)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 лют 2020
- This week we’re looking at the song The Pot by Tool as a perfect example of bass player Justin Chancellor’s tendency to use syncopated rhythms prevalent more in the styles of funk and jazz than rock and metal.
The Justin Chancellor bass and Danny Carey drum combination is always sure to provide some interesting polyrhythmic and polymetric craziness. But many people focus on the use of simultaneous and odd time signatures when looking at the syncopation within a single, regular time signature can uncover just as much interest.

Justin’s bass playing is dreamy. I think he brought some sexiness to Fear Inoculum I had never heard before from him
Definitely!
My vote is absolutely for Rosetta Stoned. I learned it myself but even 14 years later I’m obsessed with that riff.
You know the one.
Lmao I don’t there are so many good ones. Which one?
@@austinthelizard8370 ua-cam.com/video/Mb793y68rYc/v-deo.html
This one. Also the video is great.
I learned the drum parts for most of the 10,000 days album and realised for the first time hes one of my favorite bass players of all time.
@@matthewgarcia3032 You learned the Rosetta Stoned drum part? Hats off to you it feels like a platinum trophy comes with learning that part.
@Skyler Cawthorn 10,000 days is never a bad decision
The bass solo in Rosetta Stoned. That or Right In Two.
The one in Rosetta Stoned is so mindmeltingly awesome...I recommend the Channel "Cover Solutions" for playalong with tabs. Play it at 50% speed and watch the fingering, then go to 75%. I am reasonably convinced that I nailed it now, and it took me about a week.
It's basically 5:4 polyrhythm. Good moves; you'll get it quick! ;-)

Monkey Business I think you mean Leo Bass Covers.
@@CC-ks3tj Both, actually!
@@monkeybusiness673 CS doesn't have Rosetta Stoned though
@@spamsingles5948 I see. My bad.
The "joint barring" helped me alot.
I've never heard it explained so well.
Never heard any of this music from tool. Got me interested. Will definitely check them out and grab my bass at the same time. Thanks Mark
Tool is fantastic, if a bit hard to get into at first due to rythmic complexity
Buckle up!
Once you enter the wormhole that is Tool, you may never resurface. Good luck and welcome.
Your life is about to change.
Welcome to the real world...spiral out!
Damn I love the tone you've got here,
Billy Sheehan overdrive. Just added a tiny bit of drive then direct into desk. Rest of tone is basically the bass (Enfield Lionheart)
@@talkingbasslessons That Enfield is a beauty and a beast, simultaneously!
The tone sounded spot on, to me. DELICIOUS.
Please keep up with the Tool lessons! Great breakdown that I'm sure is going to help me when I try it later. This song (and many Tool songs) has always kicked my rear with the rhythm. I sometimes wonder why I try playing bass since I'm rhythmically challenged!
Thanks for running through the transition to Funk rhythms. That was very instructive.
I’ve been looking for a lesson for this song cause is one of my favs from Tool!!! This is amazing! Thank you so much sir 🖤
I think Rosetta Stoned or The Grudge have amazing bass lines that could make for interesting videos, but if you could do Jimmy... That song is underrated af, and the bass line is killer
Just gotta say, I love this channel. I started playing bass 1 month ago and I've learned a lot watching these videos :)
Hey Mark. As for other Tool songs you could break down, “46 & 2” would be a great lesson in how to play under the guitar and provide all the vibe, plus all the interesting interplay during the end section, but you’d be the real champ if you broke down their song “Push It”. That song has some amazing bass riffs in it.
Great instruction, as always, Mark. Imo, you're the best bass teacher/instructor. You break it down and explain it all. Thank you
Amazing lesson. Thank you for your time in breaking down one of my favorite bassists. Much obliged sir!
Great analysis! Very interesting to get the insights here. One of the best bass channels.
Yeah Mark, you nailed this! The tone is perfect...! Broken down and easy to follow as well. Thanks!
Thanks to Mark and this channel. Superb tutorial!
On that second riff in some sections that open D is left to ring. You can hear in the song pretty easily and it adds a fuller sound which is nice! I love playing this song. This is one of my warmup songs to get me in a polyrhythmic mood :)
Man, I keep coming back to this video to play along.
Great tone too.
Damn bro, that tone is insane!
New suscriber from Mexico here, keep on the good work.
I absolutely love playing this song!
This is an incredible lesson. Thank you, sir!
Awesome! I love these kind of heavy syncopated Rhythms!
Excellent playing and absolutely NAILED the tone!
back with another one of those block rockin' beats!
Love this song. Tried to learn it, but it definitely threw me for a loop. Going to give it another shot, thank you.
Come for the bass, stay for the fascinating accent. Cheers from the US, and thank Maynard that music is the universal language. :)
Great sound and terrific technique
Fantastic job at explaining and how to approach those bass lines, it really helped me a lot.
What I found out to be useful for me as well, was writing those different two bar lines down in a Tab/Note programm (I use an old Guitar Pro Version) mess around with the tempo, put them into a loop and try to play along to it. You easily notice if you hit a note to early or to late, the lower the tempo is set the more obvious.
Great Stuff - keep it up :)
thank you soo much mark! you are the best online teacher ever ❤❤❤
New subscriber from Australia. Love ya work mate . Awesome breakdown
Really great video, thanks!
Very informative!! Thank you so much!!
There are two other parts that you didn't break down, it is the bass solo at 3.45 minutes and my personal favourite part of the whole song soon after the solo at 4.12 minutes (minutes refer to the SONG minutes). I would like to see them broken down SO BAD, can you please make a video where you do it? Keep up the good work, I'm glad people like you share the hard study of bands like Tool, they are amazing af!
Great video and I'm sure that I gonna learn this.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS
Hi Mark, Awesome Job man! So many Awesome TOOL songs to choose from, I gotta roll w/ 46&2
Nice lesson. You sir, are a great bass player
I wish I had a music teacher, out side of H.S., that taught as well as this young man, I subbed just to freshen up on my bass playing, great video, thanks TB-OBL!
Thanks a lot. Especially for the ‘young man’. I’m 47 this year. 50 coming up soon!
@@talkingbasslessons I've got 20 years on you so yes you're a young man to me.
Really interested in how to get a nice tone like this.
Great video
The bass is amazing in every tool song. Lately ive been loving that groove towards the end of eulogy
Brilliant content
This made me wanna start playing bass!
new bass player: "I am lost. . ."
bass player who has been playing for 25+ years: "I got ya. . .but I would have been lost 25+ years ago. . ."
I don't feel so bad starting at 62 , because even badass base players say they learn something new, all of the time..😊 sharing the knowledge is the good part.. ( when it happens, )that's why this is greatly appreciated.
Sounds awsome!
I liked it a lot, and coul understood it the way I needed. I LoL in many parts 07:37 : rythmic template for various head banging maneuvers; and 09:00 anthony jackson territory jaja keep the good work bro. You made your point.
Thank you. You’re the man 😎🎸
Awesome!
Tool- parabola so amazing
Interested stuff. Like it.
Josh from BassBuzz puts out an Iron Maiden lesson and Mark from TalkingBass here with a Tool video on the same day. That's awesome!
Well done bro!
That is a beautiful bass
I’d like to see the bass line to Vicarious.
That would be my favorite too - and if not vicarious then SOBER please
Cover solutions does it and it’s so righteous. That’s my favorite song by them and possibly favorite song of all time.
@@shizamza I agree, Cover solutions is kickass
I love the video!
The OJays for the love of money is wicked cool....I also really liked the bullet boys version epic
Thanks for breaking down this song very helpful totally love perfect circle and tool songs
Please do a video on Lateralus! The Pot and Lateralus are my two favorite tool songs to play on bass and for good reason
This is amazing.
Would also be helpful to have a second camera on that tapping foot. Keep the great work!
awesome!
Awesome
Personally I feel the entire band brings something special to the band. I couldn’t live without Tool’s music in my life.
Hello Mark! I love your content, it's very valuable, i'm happy that i found your channel. Could you do the video how to gain enough technique for being able to play meshuggah-bleed?
I would love to see your take on "Pneuma". Please!!!
Thank you
U should do all the Tool songs on all the albums.. they are all essential.. Thank u for this tutorial.. the most detailed version on UA-cam. Can I ask what u use for drum loops?
Just sequence them up myself in Cubase. Use Superior Drummer 3 as a VST plugin for sounds.
Also. Intention doesnt get enough love. Sure it doesnt compare to other tool songs but its a well made song and justins bass is the best part about it.
I love all styles of music where the music is more important than the lyrics. It's cool to see you playing with a pick. I get a lot of flack for that.
I've done quite a few pick lessons. Done a big one dedicated to pick technique. Some people have pick prejudice. Weird.
@@talkingbasslessons True. They don't realize if we stayed with traditions they'd be playing their bass with a bow and calling it a cello.
@@talkingbasslessons like...I get it, fingerstyle is harder to play and more of a "sign" that you started out on the bass instead of coming to it from the guitar. but also, picking is a great tool in your toolkit and it genuinely sounds and flows better for some styles of music and particular bands. Fingerstyle is smooth and fat and round. Pickstyle is more punchy and sharp and flowing.
Both good, both favorites. And you're doing yourself a huge disservice as a bassist by not learning how to do both.
People should get flack for knowing not enough about techniques (different finger styles, different thumb styles, chucking like Bernard Edwards did, different styles of plectrum usage). Some songs are impossible to play finger style. Compare "Golden Earring - Radar Love" to any cover you can find on UA-cam and you see they are all finger style and all fail totally.
@@hans-joachimbierwirth4727 I've played bass for over 12 years, mostly super fast metal stuff and my finger picking was quite good. I switched to playing with a pick after I became a type 2 diabetic and have to stick my fingers with a needle everyday to test my glucose levels. It simply became to painful to pluck the strings. So, it was either stop playing, or learn to do it a different way.
thank you so much. its the best elaborated video i have watched for bass lesson the POT. there is a part after the second riff..... which goes when he singer sings something... weapons change of indigo something... would be nice to have a slowed version of that riff. :)
weeping shades of indigo, trapped without a reason.
Good stuff. saw Tool live back in 93!! have you done any videos on recording Bass and getting a good sound? all the best
Thank you i was looking to understand how they think ´i ´m not use with that kind of beat i ´m too much stock in the traditional 4/4 now i have a lot of practice to do 👌
Vicarious is too much fun to play. Also Jambi
Nice bass
Awesomeness! Mark, how do I get that Enfield Lionheart? I guess they can’t be sent to the US?
I'd love to see the one for Parabola, its incredibly both strange and beautiful
Excellent video tutorial as usual...how about covering Ryan Martinie and Mudvayne?
good video Mark I hope all is well kind sir
I used to think that using a pick on a bass was for those that did not want to take the time to learn how to use their fingers. Then, I realized that that was one of the ways that Justin Chancellor got his extremely articulated tone. Now, I think that it is just one more very useful tool for obtaining great tone in a bassist's toolbox--pun intended. I've just picked up bass myself however, I have played guitar for years. Having said that, I really really love the way Justin plays bass in TOOL; it's very unique.
You should look at the grudge it has some really good bass lines or wings for Marie part 2 for some finger picking action
Very late to this... amazingness ;)
Jambi bass sounds dope too.
Great sounding and looking bass. Those Sims super quads are a hell of a pickup. Is the Enfield utilizing an East filter based preamp?
No. Glockenklang.
Thnks. 🇨🇱🙏🏻
Invincible, from the new album Fear Inoculum. This one has, in my opinion, the best bass solo Justin Chancellor has ever played.
More TOOL :D
I fucking love tool! And your a sick bassist
Might I suggest try this riff with both pickups in humbucker mode? Just curious
Awesome vid mate. I'd like to learn 4°fro undertow or H from Aenima
I"m playing in a tool tribute tonight, FOOL at the Viper Room! I have to practice, and I'll watch this later. Happy Valentine's Day
Awesome video! Can you go over your rig for this? You were able to get very close to Justin’s tone without a $10,000 Wal bass.
I could never have imagined a Tool song interpreted into as funk till now. Excuse me, I have a lot of thinking to do now.
exactly
The swomp song fucking sick
Great sound! What Amps?
This channel is fucking fantastic
Can you do an EQ video lesson on how to get a bass sounding this deep, full, and rich?
No need for EQ here. A little compression (mainly for keeping everything a little more controlled) and then a touch of overdrive. The pick and the way you hold it makes a big difference in terms of tone. I get a lot of questions regarding EQ but I don't really believe in using EQ as a 'tone scuplting' device. I used to think like that when I was younger but over many years of gigging you eventually begin to realise that EQ is better used as a subtle way of overcoming problems in terms of rooms and stages. The bass itself, your picking position and method of attack are MUCH more important when it comes to tone. For example, try moving the position of your picking hand between the bridge and neck and listen to the diverse range of tones available. Want more round, bottom end? Move towards the neck. Want a more nasal, midrange tone? Move towards the bridge. I generally try to keep my onboard and amp tone controls as flat as possible. If I'm not happy with the tones I can get, I know I need a different bass for the job at hand.
You need to check out Jambi.
Beast of a song.
Great fucking tone, mate!
One of my favorite songs to play is Undertow's "Bottom". The muting and slides give plenty of room to breathe while allowing power.
Not Justin’s song, but I know exactly what you are talking about. Still one of my favorites!
That was Paul D'amour still on that album.his last album. Justin came in on tour for that album if I remember correctly.
And also one of my favorite songs to play on guitar. First tool song I learned all the way thru.
We all miss Paul D'mour
46 and 2. yes please.
In Riff #4, it sounds more accurate if you slide up from A flat to the B flat (6th to 8th fret on D string)
Im trying to pick up Tool's Aenima, and im having some trouble with it, so if you have the time a breakdown of that tune would be really nice
Justin actually has a vid on how he plays aenima, check it out 👍
Edit; this is the vid where he says "pass pass the goddamn butter pass the goddamn butter". Thats for timing
@@zigzagrz i've seen the video multiple times, it's for bassiste magazine right? And he speaks a bit of french, but apart from learning how to say pass the butter in french it didn't help me much
@@kostamandic8631 the biggest thing with that song is the hammer ons. You dont actually pick at every note and using the hammer on for most of the notes. Both Adam and Justin do this and in that vid you can see what im talking about. Youll get it 👍
