  • Tony Award winner Twyla Tharp’s exuberant ballet is full of breathtaking leaps and finely-honed partnering. Set to a new wave rock score by David Byrne, it offers “dancing of astonishing beauty and power” (The New Yorker). "...The choreography is Miss Tharp at her best. Her own vocabulary is expanded, whiplash flinging becomes daring and the partnering is out of this world" (The New York Times).
Originally performed as the finale of The Catherine Wheel, a full-length evening of dance performed at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway in 1981, 'The Golden Section' (named for the gilded athletic outfits worn by the dancers) was first performed as a stand-alone excerpt about two years after the Broadway production, and the Ailey company first performed it in 2006.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre has exceptional dancers and artists but this was not a match for me personally as an observer when viewing the piece live and via remote. I deeply apologize for comparing as I should not but I cannot erase the memory of of watching the original Twyla Tharp Dance company embrace this piece. The difference in how they embodied dynamics, speed, flow and rhythm is alarmingly missing in this interpretation. Seems to make sense as the piece was developed on the Tharp Dancers but still, the difference is alarmingly clear. I love though how Ailey is challenging itself with embracing a wider span of choreography which can inform their already repertory of classics from the incomparable Alvin Ailey. Thank you for sharing!

I haven't seen the original, except in the movie trailer, but I agree with you @Yo-el Cassell. To me the Ailey dancers seem very differently trained; I feel they need more fluidity and looseness in their limbs for this choreo. The energy needs to flow through, not be contained. It's not just about being *able* to do the moves, but to embody the intention, which they don't seem to be doing. Which is why it looks like a misfit.

I think you think this because they’re black. Just say it how you mean it next time.

      Boy… that was stupid.
There are black dancers in the film of Tharp's own company dancing this. And yes, this is positively stiff and energy-less compared to her company doing it. Get a clue!@@eth3realdivine336

@@eth3realdivine336 no it's performed much slower in this video. Please compare to the original Twyla published video. It's breathtaking. There's more danger, risk and just plain umph in the Twyla produced version.

Great score (this is the finale to a 90 minute ballet “The Catherine Wheel”) by Talking Heads’ David Byrne. But this version seems calm and plodding compared to the super energetic and amazing version danced by her company in the 1983 film of the entire ballet.

I love Alvin Ailey and I generally like Twila Tharps choreography but this just did not work for me. The music was so odd.

The singing sounds like a damn joke I can't watch this with a straight face.
Like it literally sounds like a parody of itself. I am about to finish this on mute

The original version of this song that was used in the show is pretty lame, but the version in Stop Making Sense is just incredible. Really makes the original stand out more.
