the alvin ailey dance company visited my town during my time in middle school and we were lucky enough to be offered a free showing of revelations at one of our local theaters. that was almost 6 years ago, but if i close my eyes and really try, i can still see them dancing to ‘fix me, jesus’. a performance i will never in my life forget.
For 10 plus years, my aunt took me to see Alvin Ailey every Christmas holiday season in NY. After all these years, Revelations is still my favorite performance. You can take the girl out of church, but you can’t take the church out of the girl.
Just come out of Sadlers Wells theatre, London, England seeing Alvin Ailey. First saw them as a 20 yr old black girl 40+ years ago. So blown away, l took much of my pay packet and bought tickets for my parents. They were working class immigrants from the Caribbean. Never seen live theatre or ballet. They didn’t want to go, felt they’d be out of place. I forced them to go. They came back THRILLED! Grateful l’d made them go. I try to go when they come back to London. Revaluations is a masterpiece. Lifechanging.
I first saw Alvin Ailey's company years ago as a college student and fell in love with Revelations. I attend their performances in NYC every Christmas season. Judith Jamison was beautiful and magnificent all through her career as a dancer and artistic director ❤️
Alvin Ailey was the company that inspired me to dance. Revelations is absolutely timeless. Thank you, thank you, thank you for giving life to new pieces and keeping these old gems alive!
My first time yesterday watching them in the UK, tears, heart felt tears and emotions that can only be described by being present! Our children all over the world needs to be exposed to this. Absolutely magnificent! Wow wow!! 🎉 🙏🏿❤️💯
I saw this as a child in the early 80s with my grandmother in NYC. Created lasting impressions of my African-American heritage. Many try to imitate but this is a Masterpiece.
Just as fresh, relevant, & stunning as when I saw Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre in high school--over 50 years ago. Absolutely magnificent!! So grateful that Revelations is endowed.
So fortunate to have been in the Ailey chorus assembled by Howard Roberts in the mid to late 1970s. Singing Revelations was a real joy for me that has stayed with me all these years since. Howard Roberts arrangements and conducting are a large part of the success of Ailey's amazing choreography.
It doesn't matter how many times I look at this in person or on video...I'm still captivated each and every time. My reason for dancing all this time...
Same here. I just realized I can teach myself this whole piece if it takes me the rest of my life, bc I have it on video to play whenever I want. Unthinkable in 1985.
The opening music before curtain, have tissue in hand. Then when Fix Me Jesus, Oh dear Lord, I'm always praying for that Woman to hold all she can. Always a great Man on stage that can help her. But if you notice, she does most of it herself. Truly excellent.
I could watch this masterpiece everyday and never get tired of seeing it. So many wonderful memories of seeing it perfomed many times at City Center years ago. Alvin Ailey was such a genius.
I was nine years old when I first saw The Alvin Ailey Dance Theater at The Brooklyn Academy of Music in 1970. It was a something I never forgot and I returned for many years as a young man when they performed at City Center in Manhattan. To this day, Revelations moves me to my core just as it did when I was nine.
Seems like we are the same age. Many years of watching Ailey at City Center. The live gospel choir in the 70s with the dance was amazing. I feel this piece on a soul level.
OMG.. This is legacy of so many historical and cultural elements of living on this globe. This level of spiritual-ness and transforming these historical spirituals that originated in the new world of AmeriKa during the Ma'a'fa times... are a direct connection to ones ability to spiritually keep centered during the enslavement of the 1st Peoples of the African Diaspora some 500K years ago... This is a Zeitgeist level legacy piece.
One of the most AMAZING pieces of art I have ever seen. I saw it live at City Center in NewYork. How some of the audience would not STAND for the artist is confusing...
This is for me a pinnacle of perfection. How in the world are there 54 dislikes? I had the privilege of seeing them at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion in LA...leaving the house dancing
Wow wow, we are a beaituiful People!! Spiritual and good! Left a legacy of love and inspiration! I love Black African people of amurdika. Alvil Ailey, left a legacy of amazing genius talent!
Was starting dance lessons late in life (age 20 at university) and this was the first modern dance performance I ever saw live. Our professor, and modern dance instructor, picked THE BEST ONE EVER! So inspirational and I haven't seen anything top it to date. "Fix Me Jesus" is still my favorite. The turn she does @6:23 is incredibly difficult to do. "I Wanna Be Ready" is also very difficult choreography. But so beautiful!
I too started my dance journey (20 years worth) taking classes 'late' less than 2 months shy of my 19th birthday! A year before I'd seen A Dance Sampler on PBS (1975) featuring Alvin Ailey along with Pilobolus Dance and The Paul Taylor companies! I eventually began studying at the Ailey school and got a scholarship the next year! An AWESOME EXPERIENCE!
It almost felt like I was in the Kennedy Center!!! I miss feeling the theater beat with Alvin AIlay dancers! I am writing the check to Ailey as I type!
Praying my daughter and I get to continue our tradition of our Mommy/Daughter date….only this time we’ve added my granddaughter!!! She loves music and dancing! The pandemic brought so much pain, but I rejoice in the gift of life that it brought in the form of my granddaughter!!
I will never forget Dudley Williams! So reverent and filled with beauty and awe. Revelations is the masterpiece of the 20th century! I have said that since seeing it for the first time in 1968.
Revelations truly lifts my spirit and soothes my soul every time I watch it and hear that incredible soundtrack. So blessed to have seen this live! Incredible dancers and incredible choreography all around!
I've seen this live and on video SO MANY TIMES, but only just now realized that "I've Been 'Buked" is a visual overture to the piece as a whole, with elements from each of the later dances incorporated into it. Brilliant.
I went to see the Alvin Ailey Dancers years ago. Just mesmerizing! I also visited the dance school in NYC. The opening dance “Ive Been Buked” is one of the most beautiful dance performances I’ve ever seen in my life. The different shades of brown of my people did it for me. The choreography is just beautiful! “Revelations” is my favorite!! When I bought tickets I made sure this was part of the performance.
You have to be an Olympic athlete to perform “Sinner man”. I actually cried watching it because not only is it a beautiful piece but yeah, when that day comes where are you gonna hide? Don’t die in your sin. 😢
A masterpiece Saw Ailey at City Center many years ago.. by the end of the concert people were in tears, standing and yelling - most incredible concert I’ve ever seen - will never forget that feeling
Lord I have missed them so much! My daughter and I started a Mommy/Daughter Day for when this dynamic ensemble comes to Atlanta, and we missed it this year! I’m just in here to get my Revelations fix!!! The MOST DYNAMIC performance EVER!!!
I don’t care what anyone says. Revelations was choreographed by God through Alvin Ailey. It’s supernatural.
I agree, there will never be another.
I couldn't agree.more... the way I feel when I watch it proves that.
You not wrong ✨️
Revelations speaks intense volumes. God was speaking directly to Alvin's soul.
@@edwardthornton3437Furthermore, God created a GIFTED genius in Alvin Ailey. Thank God the legacy continues. ❤
As a dancer with the Ailey company, I can assure you that revelations are an all-time favorite.

The "Fix Me Jesus" performance 🥺😭😭😭oh my Lord
That's my favorite too. I cry every time.

Rest in Peace, dance on the clouds, Judith.

Get thee back to church !!
Just keep JESUS inside. HE don't do religion.
I cried the first time I saw this live. It NEVER gets old. Thank you for having it here for me to enjoy.
Just come out of Sadlers Wells theatre, London, England seeing Alvin Ailey.
First saw them as a 20 yr old black girl 40+ years ago.

Revaluations is a masterpiece.
Lifechanging.
I saw it live during the 70s . I was mesmerized by Judith Jamison’s arabesques
As I’m now an older performer watching this, you can’t deny the vocals in this piece. It’s kinda epic and helps lay down the legendary foundation.
I first saw Alvin Ailey's company years ago as a college student and fell in love with Revelations. I attend their performances in NYC every Christmas season. Judith Jamison was beautiful and magnificent all through her career as a dancer and artistic director ❤️

I have loved Alvin Ailey since the first time I saw them in the mid-late 80's & Revelations has always been favorite
This spoke to my soul! Born in Louisiana! This took me back!
I love my people! What better way to celebrate Juneteenth than watching "Revelation." 2023
I am once again... watching the Fix Me Jesus duet.
I could watch it a million times.
The only ballet company that brings me to tears of joy at every performance. Art at it’s highest level.

Takes my breath away - every time . . .
I so totally agree!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, same here. My friends and I cry each time we see them in London. It’s just beautiful

Rocka ma soul will get you every time. So much historical feeling.
Just saw this in Chicago tonight for the umpteenth time. It still delivers the energy, emotion, and joy as it always has.
I saw it last night for the hundredth time, but it still makes my soul cry.

Fix me Jesus interpreted so very beautifully. The artistry is so evident and reminiscent of an era gone by. 👌🏾
It is beyond beautiful.

I watched this show so many times on stage with always the same pleasure, the same goosebumps, and the same tears. Perfection at the top.
Yes...yes... yes. :) so right!

Not sure if I'll ever get tired of this. Blessed to have seen it live
Remembering seeing this beautiful artistry MANY years ago! Never to be forgotten!
With Judith Jamison!!!!
Me too! I saw Revelations at UCLA with Judith Jamison many years ago. An amazing life experience I'll never forget.
Yes, me, too.
I saw this performed with Judith Jamison in, of all places, Wichita, Kansas in 1974 when I was in undergrad school. It was life changing!
It still moves me to recall watching Judith Jameson dance 2:30 decades ago.
I could watch this masterpiece everyday and never get tired of seeing it. So many wonderful memories of seeing it perfomed many times at City Center years ago. Alvin Ailey was such a genius.
How elegant, poignant and graceful a performance!!

There is nothing better than Alvin Ailey’s Revelations! I can’t see enough of it!

I have been learning about Alvin ailey in school for a bit and it’s surprising that he was inspired by church music
Now that is some dancing. Life!
I first saw Revelations at New Orleans World Fair with the Mississippi River in the background. Profoundly beautiful.
The redemption and revival of the oppressed souls of slavery. And the struggle and triumph of the Black American experience. 💞👏🙌
Watched the video of this in my modern dance class in college. Incredible!
This is my dream...I want to dance at this company!
That ENCORE !!! 😭
Excellent singing, presentation, and dancing.
Every skin color is beautiful and mysterious
I can never tire of seeing this outstanding work of art. Happy 60th Revelations.
Dang the way in the water part is kinda magical
I never get tired of watching this.

Americans NEED this Alvin Haley Presentation during this truly difficult and painful time! I am sharing the link by email with many.
The beauty of some of the simplicity is overwhelming in the choreography. The beauty of the movement is chilling.
That Sinnerman cast is transcendent
How come i am just now seeing this! Lord Jesus this is talent on full display! Ive never seen anything like this!! I am truly blown away
I went to dancing school because of my idol, Ms. Judith Jamison. The 1st time I saw her perform was in the '80's.

Alvin Ailey is great for any mood.
It almost felt like I was in the Kennedy Center!!! I miss feeling the theater beat with Alvin AIlay dancers! I am writing the check to Ailey as I type!
I highly underestimated how much I would love this.
I don't know how to choreograph anything. This is so great and well put. "Didn't my Lord deliver Daniel" is a winner!

I was only 8 when I applied for this dance troupe. Glad to see they are still together.
