  • Get an insider look at the famous dance of the 4 little swans from Swan Lake.
In rehearsal with Pacific Northwest Ballet corps de ballet dancers Carli Samuelson, Amanda Clark, Liora Neuville and Leta Biasucci (left-right). The rehearsal is led by Rehearsal Director Anne Dabrowski.
Pacific Northwest Ballet is one of the largest and most highly regarded ballet companies in the United States, and was founded in 1972. The Company of nearly fifty dancers presents more than 100 performances each year of full-length and mixed repertory ballets in Seattle and on tour.
    -------FAQ's-------
Q: Why do they wear tights over their leotards?
A: Often dancers find it more comfortable for partnering.
Q: Who are the girls doing similar steps in the background?
A: There are multiple casts for most roles: a) so the dancers don't get too fatigued on a busy performance weekend b) so more dancers get an opportunity to perform c) if anyone is injured, there is someone who can step in for them. Right after the end of this video, the other cast rehearsed the exact same excerpt.

People don't realize how hard these group variations are. It's like suspenseful. In a solo you can often hide a mistake and the public will never notice. In this if someone goes down the whole thing goes to hell. You cannot have an off moment ever!

Especially with this one because it has to be so precise and on count. And if you fall all four of your are going to be on the floor.

Ballet dancers are second only to football players when it comes to the physical demands placed on them-only they have to make it look pretty and can't grunt when they break a toenail or get another blister. To me they're more than athletes or artists. When you combine both like this-it becomes something else entirely.

Even just dancing it by yourself is difficult enough without the additional challenge of coordinating with three others. By the time you reach the pas de chats, your body just wants to drop dead from exhaustion. Though the steps are relatively simple compared to other variations, it's the amount of stamina required that really throws you for a loop.

Ikr? It seems so much more intense than the actual performance. Just like I like to watch cooking shows like "Hell's kitchen", but I sure don't care about actually eating the food. I just love to watch people working hard for their dream. It's inspiring.

Nope, nu-uh, no way does this look "simple and easy" . Even I, though not even able to dance the hokey-cokey, can see how precise timing combined with immense core/leg/ankle strength is imperative. Combined with prodigious stamina and the mindset to take, "Do it again", endlessly without throwing a shoe at the teacher.
Every ballet dancer from the Prima to the lowliest chorus has my fullest admiration.

+A Ka There are multiple casts for most roles: a) so the dancers don't get too fatigued on a busy performance weekend b) so more dancers get an opportunity to perform c) if anyone is injured, there is someone who can step in for them. Right after the end of this video, the other cast rehearsed the exact same excerpt.
