This camera needs patience and dedication. Newer builds are much better. the preview has become faster and soon we will have full real time preview in all modes even 5k. i can record 5.2k frtp with 12 bits no problem continuous with overclocking. This year will be great for this camera. Better hold onto it.
Where do you get those latest builds? This guy in the video does not give link to the site and in the official ML site has a build from 2018 as a latest one.
I’m sorry, I think the UA-camrs who have success with this camera & ML like you, Deek, Cole, etc are blessed with survivorship bias. I bought this camera in January, bought the exact same sd card you have in this video, got a version of ML from January - and I’m not having much success with it. Out of all the recording modes, only 1080p & 5k frtp work but even those modes are far from consistent. Only about 20% of my clips come out without skipped frames. The 1080 mode looks terrible, much worse than non-ML 8bit recording. The 5k mode looks great but I get a totally random record length, anywhere between 2 to 15 seconds. It always crashes if I attempt anything longer than that. I noticed you did your 5k recording test by leaving the camera recording a static scene. That won’t tax the sensor, cpu or ML code. You need to do a real-world test, outside in bright sun, tracking something that’s going in and out of shadow, to get highly variable bit-rate demands. Overall I’m really unhappy with this camera and I speculate that the majority of people that try ML on EOS-M quietly give up in frustration and either sell the camera on or use it without ML as a decent pocket sized travel or street camera. I’d be curious if you bought another EOS-M body whether you’d have the same results. Again I’m only speculating but I think because these cameras were a budget offering, the build quality was all over the place.
I think the majority of cameras work well. I've talked to a lot of people on servers and online and I've never seen this issue before. Maybe sell your unit and buy another. My personal Eos M has gone through hell and is still chugging. Also note, I don't recommend shooting 14bit in any mode except the 1080p one

Not the price is still rising, does it make sense to look at the m50 or higher instead? For $150-$200 more, are the advantages worth it? .. flip screen for example?
I am new to learning about the Canon EOS M model Camera, and you’re right. This camera is apparently becoming more more difficult to locate. Can you run Magic Lantern on any of the other Canon M series of cameras?
Real cinema cameras have special buttons for functions and better connectivity, timecode ect and you can record all day long with them. I mean sure it gets the look and a fan but not much else.
This camera was my gateway 8 years ago. It was the cheap camera back then. Time has gone on and it's feature set is going to be very minimal, old, and challenging to maximize. I believe I bricked my stills taking ability due to a risky Magic Lantern install. It was a very fun camera to learn on. I want to get it out again and toy around with it.
I have an original EOS-M. I feel the build quality is exelent. I haven't used for video yet, just for stills, but just bougth a microphone and a couple of LCD panels. :) Ok, it's not built like my 5D or 6D...but then again. I paid 150 USD with a bag and an extra batery. :)
I am currently using a M3 and want to get one just to run Magic Lantern. There are a lot more you can do with cameras that ML supports, not just videos and photography.
With the recent M-Lite kit, it makes this camera an amazing option. All the issues people complain about are negated. Overheating? It has a fan Battery Life? You can mount an external one Micro HDMI? Now it has a full sized hdmi port Viewfinder? You have an angled one. If you have the time to make a genuine effort, you can make this camera the best under $1,000. Most of the people complaining are those without much experience in this hobby, so it's clear why they asked such dumb questions
Do you know if there is something like a speed booster but that keeps the same mount? I've got a load of lenses for mine but with the 2x plus crop something like a speed booster would be amazing
yes, people are using the aforementioned viltrox speedbooster. if you wanna have the best quality, you should look into metabones. their speedboosters are pricey but the deliver very good results.
If want EF/EF-S rather than EF-M mount, and a flip screen... you can get the same Magic Lantern Crop Mood on the 650d/700d, in my experience at the moment cheaper than the EOS-M
I’m fortunate (??) enough to be able afford a much more expensive raw video acquisition camera but I’m cheered that - for the cost of maybe a weekend away - one can buy a Canon M and - with a bit of close attention to instructions - get into raw video shooting. I may even be tempted to get one for situations where you want the lightest and smallest camera - when the cost of something is that low, it seems churlish to then dwell on its limitations or nitpick !
You can pick up also it's other DIGIC V sibling EOS 650D/T4i. Regarding of RAW recording time limit, new builds contain new RAW lossless codec, this is quite necessary, as problem is not with SD card speed, but with old USB 2.0 interface, which have limits around of 40MB/s (it looks like, that SD card controller is limited by USB speed).
Oh I wish I could understand what you're saying. Are you talking about the camera He's talking about? Or the DIGIC V I am so new to this.. everyone talks about this camera, but I think there's been changes in things that have happened to it in the past few years some people are stating that the new I don't know is it the program. Of this is how illiterate I am in tech talk of camera. I'm so sorry please forgive me. Greenhorn. Many are saying the last before that 2.0.2 I think there's no problem running the camera. But then others are saying you need an adaptive part for the lens I'm like what? Can we just buy a camera and it work? I had no idea how different cameras are today. Like standing in a field of corn and not knowing what to do with it. I think I need camera school. Haha 😆 Oh well try I must..
@@MzClementine Well DIGIC V is a processor which is used in that generation of Canon cameras. For example Canon EOS M and Canon EOS 650d/ T4i are using same processor DIGIC V, therefore they have same functionalities in Magic Lantern, plus 650d/ T4i have standard Canon EF mount for lenses, so you can use on it even 30years old Canon Lenses.
SD cards seem to be a major issue. I have the "exact" same SD card and it refuses to overclock (regardless of the access mode) and I can hardly do a thing with it. Benchmarks totally fine in play mode and super fast.
They’re still cheap. Mine was £150 with bag, flash, kit lens (which I’ll sell so it’ll be about £100). I got it for photography as my s1 is too massive but the raw video is a lil bonus. I think rigging this out with a vmount etc totally defeats the purpose. And the rolling shutter and low light is horrendous. Throw on a lil speed booster and a compact prime and you’re golden IMO. A nice backup portable camera. Look elsewhere If you want a dedicated video camera, but you can get lovely results if you don’t mind the limitations.
If you want an EOS M with a better built quality, better heat management and a slightly faster sensor then get the EOS 700D aka Rebel T5i. It's basically an EOS M with a proper DSLR body and functions the exact same way. Also it has much better heat management. It can heat up to 70c without problems.
Even compacts have inflated massively in value the last year or two. Before that, I picked up a Canon S95, the last powershot true compact/small body with the S90's CCD sensor and S100's hardware otherwise, in mint condition complete for 85 USD all in. That'll be hard to find now even close for a used model, much less mint/open box. I had a "Good" quality Fuji XQ1 I picked up for 60 bucks, cleaned up/repaired, set on my shelf, and sat on for a year or two, using it often enough to keep corrosion from setting on the dial. I sold it for 300 not too long ago, anything with Fuji or "xtrans" sells for way more than it's worth. If you want these tiny bodies for a photo camera, you can still get the later version for cheap, but they moved away from the DSLR based firmware the M here has. That means nothing for an end-user, but the M having basically a DSLR's firmware (hardware calls and all) is what allowed ML to be ported over time. There are some attempts for other M cameras, but it'll be ages, if at all, for a solid version to release for them.

Hi, I don't think card reader really matters that much for M1 MacBook Air. So I think any card reader from Amazon would work fine for you! Hope this help
If you're shooting video using a tripod, stabilization adds nothing. It can even make things worse. So no IBIS is not a problem for video using a tripod. Many nice lenses for the Canon M series have no IS, which is a real problem for mobile videos (e.g. Walking and talking). So if you need that, then buy a gimbal.
I've used Danni's build before Crop mode and I find it less stable. Missing audio, stop recording for no reason, and similar. But looking forward for improvements.
I'm interested in buying this camera, so i found a few and some of the sellers say that their camera is from 2013 and not 2012 so it has the Chinese chip and not the japanese chip so it over heats and doesn't work well is this true or are they just not using it properly?

@@cjsaysthings Oh, right. 10bit vs 14bit saves you nearly 1/3 of the overall file size, for example. I often see data rates of 50MB/s for 14bit raw recording, which is around 180GB/h. 2/3 of that would be kind of in the ballpart of 128GB/h. 5K recorded in ML is actually cropped horizontally, so it's not actually 5K. I guess that's what affects the file size the most. "Real" 5K would result in huuuge file sizes.
Maybe because your 5k mode was wrong. Check your resolution. If you set 5.2k mode, you can only get like 3 sec video recording time. Find it on youtube

Genius title. I came to hate, but happily stayed after the vibes
This or 5d m3 for magic lantern ? Which one should I buy
Also note, I don't recommend shooting 14bit in any mode except the 1080p one
try to copy what Zeek does? his eos-m settings always work for me, and have pretty long record times
I agree, in a professional setting, it’s not a reliable tool. Mostly for hobbyist filmmakers
@@Rsp42 if you have the money sure. If all you can afford is cheap ass camera, ML is leagues better as professional tool. You just have to learn to use it.

The camera is definitely a beast. Can take some getting use to but In my opinion definitely worth it
Not the price is still rising, does it make sense to look at the m50 or higher instead? For $150-$200 more, are the advantages worth it? .. flip screen for example?
I am new to learning about the Canon EOS M model Camera, and you’re right. This camera is apparently becoming more more difficult to locate. Can you run Magic Lantern on any of the other Canon M series of cameras?
@FoxTailWhipz you should do a video trying out those cheap sirui anamorphic lenses
im sold on them. getting the 35mm and the 70mm. heard the 50 is discolored.
Check out the modkit from 3d focus for this camera. That turns this thing physically into a real cinema camera. Really impressed me
Real cinema cameras have special buttons for functions and better connectivity, timecode ect and you can record all day long with them. I mean sure it gets the look and a fan but not much else.
Dummy battery and a usb power bank with atleast 20w pd works too
This camera was my gateway 8 years ago. It was the cheap camera back then. Time has gone on and it's feature set is going to be very minimal, old, and challenging to maximize. I believe I bricked my stills taking ability due to a risky Magic Lantern install. It was a very fun camera to learn on. I want to get it out again and toy around with it.
I am very interested in hearing this type of video but about crop mood. Thank you for your insights!
Not just videos and photography? Paperweight?
With the recent M-Lite kit, it makes this camera an amazing option. All the issues people complain about are negated.
Overheating? It has a fan
Battery Life? You can mount an external one
Micro HDMI? Now it has a full sized hdmi port
Viewfinder? You have an angled one.
If you have the time to make a genuine effort, you can make this camera the best under $1,000. Most of the people complaining are those without much experience in this hobby, so it's clear why they asked such dumb questions
Do you know if there is something like a speed booster but that keeps the same mount? I've got a load of lenses for mine but with the 2x plus crop something like a speed booster would be amazing
mount to the same mount is impossible, phisics law :') i think you just need an 8mm or sum
There is a Viltrox EF to EF-M speedbooster for it!
yes, people are using the aforementioned viltrox speedbooster. if you wanna have the best quality, you should look into metabones. their speedboosters are pricey but the deliver very good results.
I bought this camera about 100 years ago as a hobbyist and it's been sitting in my closet ever since, so basically new. What is the current value?
They’re still cheap. Mine was £150 with bag, flash, kit lens (which I’ll sell so it’ll be about £100). I got it for photography as my s1 is too massive but the raw video is a lil bonus. I think rigging this out with a vmount etc totally defeats the purpose. And the rolling shutter and low light is horrendous.
Throw on a lil speed booster and a compact prime and you’re golden IMO. A nice backup portable camera. Look elsewhere If you want a dedicated video camera, but you can get lovely results if you don’t mind the limitations.
You did not address the live playback view issue.
Thanks a lot. This video solves all of my questions,, I should buy it now!!!
I’m glad it helped!
what about the cold? How does it handle very low temperatures? Some devices just shut off or die.
Wouldn't it be something if they made a ML for the later series like the M200
If you want an EOS M with a better built quality, better heat management and a slightly faster sensor then get the EOS 700D aka Rebel T5i.
It's basically an EOS M with a proper DSLR body and functions the exact same way. Also it has much better heat management. It can heat up to 70c without problems.
can you use a 256gb sd card with it, or is 128gb the max?
You can definitely use SD cards with more storage on them, as Zeek has demonstrated. 👍🏾👍🏾
What is the current ml firm ware?
My question is why. Why buy an outdated pocket camera at a premium price? What’s the point?
Have you/ could you share one of your long captures straight out of the camera?
I am glad that I bought one from Japan used while they were still within $200. I heard that they increased the price now.

One answer: this people know that in movies any scene take 30 minutes? I work in movies even Hollywood and the scene with are only for a few minutes

Is there any 60FPS mode?
I think you are mistaken. It was meant to shoot in 5k and 2.5k but Canon crippled it. That's the whole point of the firmware abstraction layer.
I think my EOS M is complettly made of metal... are there different models out there?
Do you have a link directly to the firmware update

Does the EOS-M have clean HDMI out???? HELP
What about autofocus?
Hi everyone, I'm having an issue with my EOS M camera. When I adjust the ISO, the brightness of the image on the camera screen doesn't change. Normally, when the ISO is changed, the brightness should change accordingly, but this doesn't happen on my camera. As a result, the photos I take are often over or under exposed. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Would it work for offline streaming?
thank you very much ... i use sd card 64 GB with my eos m and i download file of magiclatern to my card and i install the latest firmware but the camera cant read the magiclatern .... please heelp ...thank you
Make sure you get a good card. I recommend the Sandisk Extreme Pro 95 mb/s card. Be sure to change the AccessMode from SDR104 to SDR50 from the SD Overlock submenu by pressing the play button. After changing it to SDR 50, restart the camera to let it apply the new setting. Otherwise, you can not get continuos shooting.
I hope this help!
which card reader is best for m1 MacBook Air ?
Hi, I don't think card reader really matters that much for M1 MacBook Air. So I think any card reader from Amazon would work fine for you! Hope this help
why can record 5k but not 4k? why not 4k 30fps?
If you're shooting video using a tripod, stabilization adds nothing. It can even make things worse. So no IBIS is not a problem for video using a tripod. Many nice lenses for the Canon M series have no IS, which is a real problem for mobile videos (e.g. Walking and talking). So if you need that, then buy a gimbal.
Crop Mood just made the camera AMAZING. it's so freaking stable compared with regular magic lantern...
I've used Danni's build before Crop mode and I find it less stable. Missing audio, stop recording for no reason, and similar. But looking forward for improvements.
@@vladimirkirillovskiy8056 that was my experience. i would never trust danne's build to something i needed to get quickly. just a lot of quirks.
Where can I get crop mode Ml?
I'm interested in buying this camera, so i found a few and some of the sellers say that their camera is from 2013 and not 2012 so it has the Chinese chip and not the japanese chip so it over heats and doesn't work well is this true or are they just not using it properly?
I think this camera is same, canon not gonna do that, the brand image gonna be suck if canon do that
Does autofocus work in magic lantern
I don't think so, I think you have to manually focus.
What write speed do we need for it?
Sandisk Extreme Pro 95 mb/s card is the best card to get for the Canon EOS M with Magic Lantern. Be sure to change the AccessMode from SDR104 to SDR50 from the SD Overlock submenu by pressing the play button. After changing it to SDR 50, restart the camera to let it apply the new setting. Otherwise, you can not get continuos shooting.
Is this camera limited to 30 min recording?
no. not with Magiclantern installed. Did you watch the video he said it haha.
Great video!
this 5k isnt normal 5k. it has strange aspect ratio. so u can't call it 5k.
How did you record 5k for an hour on 128GB card?
Magic Lantern Crop Mood
@@TimeFadesMemoryLasts right but the file size im saying
@@cjsaysthings Oh, right. 10bit vs 14bit saves you nearly 1/3 of the overall file size, for example. I often see data rates of 50MB/s for 14bit raw recording, which is around 180GB/h. 2/3 of that would be kind of in the ballpart of 128GB/h. 5K recorded in ML is actually cropped horizontally, so it's not actually 5K. I guess that's what affects the file size the most. "Real" 5K would result in huuuge file sizes.
@@TimeFadesMemoryLasts i guess. I had a 5d mrk3 and couldn’t get file size close to that even at 10 bit so who knows

Maybe because your 5k mode was wrong. Check your resolution. If you set 5.2k mode, you can only get like 3 sec video recording time.

That camera is Not Cheap made. Magnesium alloy body. You are so full of crap! Not cheap either when introduced. Try about $1000 when released in late 2012. They made more than a couple of M cameras. Not a couple. Need to get your facts straight. BTW, I've had one since 2013.
Anyway it’s nearly impossible for normal uses. Okay you have some continuous recording in 3-5k, but in crop like 6x times, which requires super wide angle lenses like 6mm, and 1080 looks absolutely terrible with noise and moire all over. Tried it, but found it just cumbersome and non practical, I’d suggest people to get original black magic pocket instead.
