I went in 100 percent expecting 90 min of fan service and I wasn’t disappointed at all. Great fun.
Fan service is an understatement...incredibly faithful almost to a fault. My only concern is when movies are ultra-faithful and don't deviate, then they can feel more like 1.5 hour cut scene then a feature length film based on an IP.
@@bmshaven nothing wrong with that. if it's well made and entertaining, that's actually what most fans of the IP expect.
Took the day off and brought my 7yr old with me today to see the movie. I thought it was good, he was cheering in his seat at almost every scene. So many BluRays will be sold in a few months :D
We just left the theater and we absolutely loved it!
I agree that this movie is and should first be for kids. Nintendo is building the next army of gamers that will be nagging their parents to buy them the new game coming out. It's a smart play!
Making the story simple was perfect for this kinda of movie because that’s what it needed to be.
Simple isn’t bad. It’s a good story with all the elements you need for storytelling. You have failures, obstacles to overcome, and then you have success. A clear beginning, middle, and end. Over complicating a simple story doesn’t make it better it just makes it complicated. I really enjoyed it for what it was. I didn’t go into the movie comparing it to say The Lord of The Rings Trilogy.
“It’s a family movie if you have little kids and things.” I’ll be sure to bring my little things to watch this. 😂❤
😂 what kind of things
@gambitodsey8606 it isn't woke.. lol
@Gambit Odsey No it's not. What's woke about it? I'm so happy it's not!
This movie was simply a masterpiece imo ... I think it's gonna be a huge hit bc it attracts a huge audience. The characters were all spot on and there was a lotta reference to the games . I hate when characters and story is way off .. just like Harry Potter it was very close to what the audience had in mind . Was a great movie
It's so perfectly balanced between being a reference to the game and being its own things. Truly a masterpiece
I'm happy video games are finally getting good movies! 🐱 sonic and Mario deserve it!
Whoa don’t get too excited. The sonic movies were not that good.
I think listening to fans and sonic 2 being a step up deserves my money, I was planning on ignoring the first one but after they listened to fans and changed his design and even cast the videogame voice actress for Tails and not replace her with a big name actor is enough to satisfy me, I don't think they are amazing especially the first but they are giving me enough as a fan that I am able to enjoy them , looking forward to shadow in sonic 3 🖤🦔
Sonic is okay but not that good, maybe good for lil kids, but the adults of today who grew up with sonic was alright 😅, honestly Wreck it ralph was the only cool moment to see sonic in the big screen with little screen time, and don't forget get chip and Dale Hilarious ulgy sonic 😂
It wasn't that good
I wish Sonic got a fully animated film with Jaleel White as his voice. These current films are ridiculous.
I saw it today and was impressed with it. I’m 40 years old and wanted more of an adventure with it but we have to remember it’s a kids movie
It's Not Just A Kids Movie. Anybody could enjoy it.
I'm 40 and my only complaint is that they tried to cram so much into so little time. I can't fault them for that, but there were parts I was really enjoying that just ended too quickly. Like "Thunderstruck" playing in the kart garage. It just ended too quickly.
Super Mario in itself is pretty simple which makes it easy to pick up and enjoy and I'm grateful for this movie for being just that. Remember the last time a studio tried to do too much with the Super Mario Bros IP? 😄
Y’all 40 damn
I'm 37 and without kids I'll never venture into a theater to see this by myself 😂 at the end of the day it's a kids movie and for families.
Seeing it with my kids and wife Thursday. Gonna be a good time.
My family and I loved it, hope you all do too.
I absolutely loved this movie. I dont think any other movie has given me a permanent smile on my face throughout the entire film like this one did. Super fun.
I don't trust critics who suck at games, glad John is a real one
Cue the Cuphead tutorial fail video clip.
I took my five year old to see the is movie and it was his introduction to the world of the Mario Bros.
He totally loved it but my god… the questions were insane!! I couldn’t even answer most of them, we’re taking stuff like… “why is that turtle bad?” “why is there talking mushrooms” and last but in no way least “what’s a plumber?”. 😂
Smiled like a goof the entire time. So much fun and very clearly crafted with love and immense attention to detail. Can't wait to see it again!
Loved your review with Vic. Great to see you two together
Woah what? Are they back to reviewing movies?
I really liked it... I was so worried going into this one, hoping they didn't ruin it... and they didn't
I gave it 4.5 stars out of 5 stars on Letterboxd (so like 9/10) was super fun!
Great review! I can't wait to see this movie tomorrow!
Hope you liked it! I did
@@evilmiera i liked it too!
I am so glad to hear they keep the story simple as it is in the game.
I really don't want to see an overly developed past about mario who might had some tragedy or Luigi who is in his hardship in life,
or whoever maybe Bowser even. To have super complex over the top depth that the movie director "thought" it would expand the character
more than they used to be in the game.
These are what I am afraid of all these video game adaptation movies. Even knowing Shigeru Miyamoto is involved in the making of the movie. I still fear that the director would add their "creativities" into the plot.
.
Now I just think 90 mins might be too short, wish they had made it 120 mins for full 2 hrs.
I hope this Mario movie do well in the office as it could be the opener for the future Nintendo Universe.
See now we have matured technology to pretty much replicate any animation style we want..
A Zelda movie would be nice to have.
Im more hype for a potential Metroid, Zelda, Star fox or Luigi's mansion movie.
I trust your style and judgement. Gonna take the kids to see it now. Any new material coming out with regards to phantasy star or dragon quest? Keep up the great work!
Had a blast watching it. My 10-year-old son and I kept looking at each other and getting hyped at all the Easter eggs and music. We loved it and it really is a movie for the fans.
Your hair is especially fantastic this video, Johnny! And a fantastic review besides, of course 😄
It was perfect. Just the exact movie it needed to be. Even the voices. They are definitely starting a universe.
this is great to hear, always great news when a movie delivers
Johnny didn't love it.
I heard that Seth Rogan is getting the most hate because he's Seth Rogan playing Seth Rogan.
No, it's because he's a stupid SJW!
All I want from my Mario games is a fun and exciting adventure, the same would apply to any Mario movie. I was a little worried but it sounds like this one hits the mark so I'll definitely give it a watch.
Now all we need is a Studio Ghibli Zelda silent film
Don’t give Seth Rogen a pass for his lazy DK. He made it loud and clear that he wasn’t going to try while Chris Pratt put effort into it.
I hate Seth Rogan now, he's such a POS.
The 1993 movie is very nostalgic for me. I use to collect the trading cards for it.
However both the 1993 movie AND the Street fighter 2 movie 1995 BOTH Sucked at this this Mario Bros movie IS worth watching.
Just got back from imax me and my boy absolutely loved it. No dull boring bits.
Can't comment about the voices since I've watched it in Italian (looking forward to rewatching it at least twice, once in English and once in Japanese when the DVDs come out) and while I enjoyed it so much personally as a big Mario fan, in fact personally my only gripe is that it's short as I wanted to see more of it, I definitely agree with most of your review, both the positives and the negatives!
Sooo excited to see this tomorrow!
I had a smile on my face too for a lot of the movie. Kart sequences were great and Bowser too.
I really can’t wait to take my son to watch this ❤
I'm taking my mini gamer to see it tomorrow night. We are so excited about it.
absolutely love it, I already saw it twice and plan to go back to see it again this week.
I'm looking forward to watching this at some point so thanks for not spoiling it
The critics hated it but what did they expect? Citizen Kane?
I'm seeing it on Saturday, I'm excited! Also how did you see it early?
Saw it with my lil family in theater and we all loved it, planning on a round 2.
Going to see the new Super Mario Bros Movie on Friday! Can't wait!
Taking my kids to this tomorrow. I don’t know who is more excited me or them lol
That 1993 movie is still a childhood favorite lol, loved every second of it. The Luigi Mario and Mario Mario brothers lol
I liked the old '93 version too, sure it wasnt perfect and played it safe, but it was still a lot of fun. Then I saw the new movie and I just think it does the same things only better, visually its stunning and the voice acting was spot on for me, but in the end it's simply more fun to watch. What I dont get is why can't some people like both? Why is it that some people feel they need to hate on one movie in order to like the other, that's just pathetic, it's still Mario and it's still more or less the same very simple enjoyable tale. Incidentally, I'm an adult who hardly ever played the video games, I just enjoyed both movies.
I'm gonna hold off on watching this review until tomorrow. My sister and I are going to watch it tomorrow afternoon and I'm so excited. It's been a long time since I've been to see a movie in a theater. My mom passed away on Wednesday so I'm hoping this movie can help lift my spirits a little bit and get my mind on other things. ❤
**Edit this was a great review and I absolutely loved the movie. It was a good time and just really cute. My favorite thing about it was Jack Black as Bowser. He did an amazing job. 👏🏻
I hope both of you can have fun. Sorry to hear about your mom.
Have a nice time. Sorry to read about your mother.
Thank you guys for the nice comments. ;w; 💜
Sorry for your loss! Glad you enjoyed the movie
Living in Japan and can’t watch it till April 28th. Need to avoid spoilers!!! Easier said.
Nice review Johnny, cannot wait for this one. As long as they give us a Luigi's Mansion movie down the road I will be a happy man...
i thought the sonic movie was done well not seen the second one, how does it compare?
The air must have been pretty darn "cold" around that shy guy balloon.
A movie that stayed true to the source material and didn't take unnecessary risks
We should count our blessings that Shigeru Miyamoto produced this and didn't let us down
If this does well maybe they will make a Metroid movie. But it better not be a live action, I would live to see it in this format but more serious to fit Metroid's theme.
I've said this before but i'll admit it, i'm in my 20's and even i'm excited for this, i'm not sold on Chris Pratt's Mario (i really don't like it) but i love Jack Black's Bowser and Toad sounds good and also the film is looking gorgeous, can't wait to see it :)
Idk, any voice that does mario is fine by me, Mario rarely speaks so I don't see the issue the actor playing as him
Danny DeVito should’ve voiced Toad tho such a missed opportunity 😹😹
I’m surprised you didn’t mention that Charles Martinet voiced Mario’s Dad
I’m curious to see if there are any Super Mario RPG references
Cool review, hope you are doing a D&D one too!
I brought my family to see it today. Best thing about the movie is they simply made it FUN. No agenda or social lecture to beat you over the head with. Absolutely delightful. Take notes, Hollywood. THIS is how you achieve box office success!
Love the movie. Johnny what do you think about the Armoured Core video? My jaw is still on the floor 🤖
I saw some bad critic rotten tomatoes reviews and got worried. Glad you enjoyed
I will go on Sunday with my oldest son... We are so hyped...
HappyConsoleGamer, I would love to see The Super Mario Bros. Movie packaged in an NES controller steelbook.
If Nintendo would end up having the movie come in an NES steelbook controller I wonder if they could make it where you can push the buttons on it or even make it a working controller for your NES or Switch? I suggested this to Nintendo when they 1st released the trailer for the film.
One of my favorite childhood actors is voicing one of my favorite villains I can't wait to see this movie tomorrow especially in 3d
Was the sound track by the composer of the Mario games?
Seth Rogen didn’t even try to come up with a unique voice.
Forever amazed that we agree on so much despite having grown thousands of miles apart. Our reviews of things are mirror reflections more often than not. Never stop, man.
I can only imagine the next video game films in the upcoming NCU. Zelda, Kirby, Metroid, even Star Fox!
I finally saw this movie yesterday. I loved it. I felt was I 6 yrs old old again watching this movie.
Great video John! Your passion really shines through!
Absolutely loved the viewing party I attended for MurrayNJ08.. Movie was stellar and fun!
One of the best animated/video game movies ever! My kids and I really enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed it! Wait until the very end of the credits I suspect there will be a sequal
Absoöutely loved it. It's a very charming movie with lot of heart and fun adventure story. Personally, even though I watched the trailers, I was still surprised and think the funny scenes are just as great as the action scenes. I keep my fingers crossed for a sequel.
my 5 year old nephew is really looking forward for this, im just xcited that hes excited
Awesome review! I have no interest in Mario (Spare me lol) but it looked really cute. I may check it out when it's not in theaters
Nicely chosen shirt for this video.
Luigi’s Mansion movie next?
Great movie, The only part I'd want to rewatch is the ending sequence with mario and luigi... LOVED that part.
lets gooo! Im so ready for this movie !
Cant wait for tomorrow! Yaju!! CoooOOOL video Johnny! my first Mario game i Played was Super mario world in 90's and always i thought Mario deserves a good movie!
Charles Martinet is in the movie! Seeing it today….Easter egg by Nintendo….and today is Easter 😜
I'm surprised we both gave it a similar score, for some reason I thought you would rate it higher than I would.
People talk about fan service being a problem, but if any IP needs fan service for a film it'd be the Super Mario Bros. franchise.
Awesome shirt. One of my favourite video games
The 93 Mario Bros movie is still a great movie to me. Don't care what anyone says
My only problem was I wish it was longer
I just got back from seeing it and overall I really enjoyed, definitely no where near to being an amazing movie. It was good and fun time and as a big Mario fan I had a blast. Nearly cried once or twice. Had a big smile on my face through the whole thing. ❤️
It's a perfect setup for more films.
Luigi's Mansion on the big screen would be crazy.
Awesome movie 🎥 review video man 😎!
Truth mate - Downloaded cam version.. Audio is normal problem with these rips. Looks good so will wait for a DVD/BR version. At least I'm honest..
Saw this movie and had so much fun! 😆
I'm hoping for a Zelda and Metroid animated film one of these days. (No shade to people who want a live action one. I just like animated films but I'd watch a live action too lol).
Let's just say, it's a good 7/10 start with a lot of (missed) potential but 9/10 fan service. Now let's hope Nintendo and Illumination see the criticism about the pacing, storytelling and unnecessary 80s songs and not be stubborn for once. They need to streamline the second one the way Sonic 2 improved on the first movie and give each character more room to breathe, now that the world-building is done.
Loved the film but my one take away from it was seeing switch game trailers gloriously displayed on the big screen before the film and made me wish I could play my games on that 😊
Johnny ages like a fine wine, god damn.
Hopefully when they do the blu ray there will be a Charles voice option...but I doubt it
I watched with my kids. I had zero expectations. But I must say, my kids had a great time, and I had a great time as well! Thoroughly recommend this movie! My biggest thrill was the reference to 1990s Mario tv show. (Captain n and game masters)
Finally a deserving 3D movie dedicated to the superstar of videogames, Mario. Luigi, Peach and Bowser were also brilliant. It is a fun movie loaded with nostalgic moment for fans also a movie for pure family fun, kids will love it, Super Mario Bros movie is absolute fantasy and no room for logic.
Great movie . Nostalgia overload . Beautiful animations
I grew up playing the arcade Donkey Kong/DK Jr, OG Mario Bros and later Super Mario Bros on the Japanese Famicom a year or two before the US NES launched. I was initially skeptical about Pratt's casting but he was actually pretty ok. I really enjoyed the movie (even more than the overlong J Wick 4) and would consider seeing it again, it was that fun.
Should we watch in 3d or no?
my 4yr old was terrified of bowser my partner had to take him outside
Nintendo (especially Miyamoto) were very hands on with the movie development/design. So there was no way it would be released and not due the source material justice.
Let's just say, it's a good start with a lot of (missed) potential. Now let's hope Nintendo and Illuminations sees the criticism about the pacing, storytelling and unnecessary 80s songs and streamline the second one the way Sonic 2 improved on the first movie.
7.5 is bang on for me (it’s actually 7.4 on IMDB at the moment with a 46 Metascore).
