  • The Super Mario Bros Movie released recently, and it's a lot of fun for longtime fans of the franchise. However, the release of this film has caused quite a stir online and it's shone a light on how the internet reacts to criticism in general. This is not just my own review of the film, I'll also be taking a look at the toxicity that surrounded the film's release and how poor the discourse was.

That’s like, the most basic plot idea EVER (which isn’t a bad thing) and would actually allow Luigi to do something and possibly even work in an arc of stepping out of his brother’s shadow or being independent despite his fears or whatever. I think the best argument for this movie is literally:
In a game, we can tolerate no story; because the Gameplay can pick up the slack. But in a Movie, the story is the main appeal, without it; why do you care about what you're watching?
Yes, one can argue "Mario has never cared about Story." but there's kinda a big difference when the adventure is yours to play, so you can experience the world at your own pace, and let the fun factor of the game push you into the mood. A Movie doesn't have this luxury, because everyone is watching the same experience... without that free form flow... you're left with a flat world with no story, and characters you know and love... but instead of you dictating what happens, it just kinda rolls down a hill slowly.

    • @katielee7364
      @katielee7364 Рік тому +8

      It's a simple story but it's still a story

    • @Kohchu
      @Kohchu Рік тому +31

@@katielee7364 Yes, but this is the same story that the rest of the games have (Just, put Peach instead of Luigi). But, the key difference is, if I've watched the Mario Movie once, I already know what to expect if I go to watch it again. There's nothing left to thrill or excite me, unless I wait several years later and rewatch it as a nostalgia flick. Because that's all the Movie is at the end of the day. It's got a lot going for it, but at the end of the day; it's Nostalgia pandering of the highest degree. And that can be fun, I myself loved seeing all the Easter Eggs in the Toad Shops for example... but that can only get you so many points.
When I look at Super Mario World or Mario Odyssey... the story is the same, but how I choose to approach the adventure is my choice to make, as there are branching paths and options that allow me to make my own journey. This is the difference between the two.

Critics tend to base their judgment on objectivity, does it have a plot, do the characters develop, etc. Audiences tend to base their judgment on enjoyment, was it bright, was care put into it, etc. So when you go to watch something but are unsure if you want to, think about what your looking for. Illumination made a movie focus targeted at Mario fans, hence, skimp out on plot, character development, etc... for fan service. It uses Illumation's hyper active 'move from joke to joke so fast you can't breathe' approach.
Paramount made a Sonic movie for *all* audiences, hence the Sonic films were seen in a more favorable light because it has actual heartfelt moments and plot points, character arcs.

That is mostly my problem with Illumination. The company can have all the shiny animation (even though mostly character design-wise the designs are too simple and uninteresting), big budget, and marketing strategies they want, but the one thing that Illumination movies lack in is their stories. They play it too safe in the storytelling department. Not to say that every single movie they make needs to be some 50-layer deconstruction of the human mind, but it needs to have something of interest other than shiny looking animation. Even with Disney, they are starting to over bank on the hyper realistic animation department. More focused on the technology of their animation than telling a good story.
Good animation should be aimed for, but shouldn’t completely ignore the effort into telling a good story. Equal effort should go into all aspects of a film, no matter the medium.

While I wouldn't say the first Sonic movie was very faithful, I think the second one was very faithful in many ways, while making some necessary changes. Sure, the wedding sequence felt a bit out of place, but I think the complaints about that sequence are somewhat exaggerated and it was a fun way to introduce G.U.N. However, the main point is that a more faithful adaptation doesn't necessarily make for a better movie. Something I appreciate about the Sonic movies (more so the second one) is that they thought about making an entertaining movie first that captures the essence of Sonic instead of focusing on filling the movie to the brim with references and nods to the games. That's not to say that those can't be fun and enjoyable, but I don't think it should be the primary focus when making a movie. What I like most about the Sonic movies is that there is still a clear respect for the source material, but the movies still feel new and fresh to a fan like me. The Sonic movies are not the most amazing things ever made, but I won't lie when I say that the upcoming third movie is probably one of my most anticipated pieces of media, and it's because they've been able to establish a sense of development and respect for the characters of a franchise I've loved for many years. Sonic has always been more in tone with a "teen" audience mindset and has always tackled some pretty heavy personal themes making it far easier to have raised stakes in a movie about it. Mario is Nintendo's MAIN ip, and the one they are most particular about. I believe a slower pace and a 2 hour showing would have allowed the writers to flesh out some of the characters and themes they wanted to explore more. Making it better than what it is but it still does not really stay on any meaningful topic for more than a few seconds in the movie.

They really needed more Luigi in this film. It felt like Peach took his place by having him be the damsel in distress for basically the entire movie.
The movie should have made sure that nobody was captured so that Peach, Mario, Toad and Luigi got an equal amount of screen time or just stick to tradition and have Peach be captured like always.
Giving peach this personality really held back what Mario and Luigi could have done together, and also made Mario seem useless in the movie because Peach could've taken on Bowser all by herself.

I thought it also worked pretty well as a plot device for the heroes to come together. They both have a shared interest in stopping Bowser which gives them a viable excuse to meet peach a princess and, for them to get involved in a conflict that has nothing to do with them. Everything in the movie IS GORGEOUS, visually appealing and the imagination they put into each and every single scene was BREATHTAKING. The iconic tracks were brought in as well with a glorious twist in, Bowser as a whole took the whole shows with his stellar performance and his hilarious and adorable simping for peach was fun to watch. I Ramble About the Movie. Some spoilers ahead.
I'm not afraid to say that my love for the movie is mostly nostalgia-based. Everything in the movie that was even slightly nostalgia-based made my beart sing. Though, I think I would have loved the movie so much more if they had slowed down and just focused on one thing at a time. I really hope that, if there is ever a sequel, they will try to focus more on their characters. I realize it's a lot harder to visualize a slower scene when you have to write and read it, and you feel like it's going to be a lot slower than it actually ends up being, but more people will love a video game movie when there is substance.
I still loved the movie. I loved the background music and the songs they chose to play, even if they did take me out of the scene. I'm going to show my 5 year old, Mario-obsessed baby brother this movie at some point, and my dad, too. I'm going to rewatch this movie many times, but the plotlines they bring up and never do anything with are going to bother me, especially the part where Mario suggests that Peach could've come from his world and it's so quickly forgotten about.
The movie is cute and fun and so enjoyable to me, as someone who has had Mario be a constant in their life. That's all it aimed to be, and I hope to see sequels in the future. Criticism should still be given, though, and the "it's just a kids movie" excuse makes my blood boil. Regardless of if it's a kid's movie, adults are going to see it, too. Adults should be able to enjoy a movie about characters that were in their childhood, too, without feeling childish. Being a kid's movie has nothing to do with its value. I want story with my Mario movie, I want characters to have goals.
If I'm desperate enough, I'm sure AO3 will have something, lol.

I loved it, and I would agree with you. It was very heavy on the nostalgia for the adults and setting the era. (the music selection) I was wondering if Illumination tried to pull that into the animation aesthetic.
I had that though when Mario made that suggestion and it just sorta dropped. Feels like Mario would of had a follow up question, but the question go answer and done. That's all a hint or reference of Galaxy's and Rosalina, there's the luma. Maybe Daisy, but not hinted at. So many things like that are hint/references to things, and possible sequels/spin-offs.
I was actually a little surprised they even worked in the babies at all, and used it as quick explanation for "why is Peach the ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom of toads."
I think there's a perfect line for how the movie's plot feels about exposition: when the toad's ask who Mario is and she says, "He
s not important" and the toads drop it, cheer, and they promptly leave. Either you (audience) already knows or is going to pick it up, we're moving. Plot pacing is definately an available critique, it is very very fast.
"It's just a kids movie" or "It's for kids" has meant exactly that for a long time. Essentially meaning "It doesn't matter, why do you care." and it's the attitude people treat other hobbies and interests. "For Kids" is even a long standing corporate paradigm that has that same mentality and that "kids" are inept and incredible stupid; either needing excessive explaining of the simple/obvious or just flashy colors, with no connection whatsoever. Any kind of complex interaction or themes are above them, so not worth the effort or money. So on and so forth. (Ex. It's part of the reason PIB2 is getting the high-praise for story. Since that was mentioned.) Might also include shying away from euphemisms or anything close.
Personally, I don't think Mario falls into that due one of the possible critiques: That being that nothing is really explained, either you already know or you have to see it, see it happen or what it does, and put that together. That alone goes beyond the "for kids" paradigm. ( I could be very wrong, am very biased here, I like just being dumped into a world and not having it explained. It's one of my favorites, though here I obviously mostly already know and seeing how brought together. )
That excuse is annoying; don't diminish your own interest and on top of that validate that paradigm.
To similar semantics, one could explain the simple story as being a children's story as a reference to the simplicity of (small) children's book. However, that only servers only as an explanation and is neither a defense or an intent complaint. What's being said is not that though, but the above "for kids" silliness as per usual cliche.
"Being a kid's movie has nothing to do with its value." is very true. There's plenty of reasons why the mentality is detriment, but I won't get into that. And yhea, critique should be given; in my opinion, I think an idea like something should be well executed, well done, etc. regardless of it it's "high-class" or not. That "for kids" paradigm can be summed up with a word: disregard.
And "childish" is it's own other trope/cliche and issue, with a bunch of misrepresentation... whole other discussion.
Some people have mentioned the time restraints, which maybe. While I'm really impressed with how they melded so many games together, that's is part of the issue here I think. There is so much to have to show, and there's still places left out. They could of left out DK as kingdom, but it seems to used that to both work in DK in general, Country, but also Mario Kart and Smash Bros. It also setup Peach as royalty with that request to another kingdom. Had they not done that, it could of been a tighter plot with more time. But DK as an original connection was probably considered to important to leave out.
I do hope of that for squeals, too. Now that are in, will focus only on sort of the area of the adventure.
Saying that, that gave me a though of another way to describe this with the time limit: it had the requirement of adventuring though everywhere, even though why it's needed is a bit for the sake of it. I don't know if there's a trope name for that kind of thing.

Forgive the food analogy, but this was like going from masterfully cooked meal by a renowned chef, to a decorative cake. Sure, the cake is delicious and satisfying, but its depth pales in comparison to the meal you had just before.

Something that really bothered me that nobody else is talking about is the use of slowdown scenes. One or two or even three in a movie is fine but I noticed a lot more used to pad out the already short runtime. It had me rolling my eyes in the theater towards the third act making me think to myself "just get on with it already", which is ironic in that the overall pacing was making me think "woah slow down it feels like this movie just started." However, a thing I liked that again, people don't seem to be talking about is the 2.5D scenes. There was a perfect amount of those to where it didn't feel gimmicky, I think there's one in each act? It shows that, despite being bare bones in any plot or world building elements, the Mario movie is unique in that sense. For me, however, the criticisms outweighed the praises, enough so that I left the theater feeling very disappointed. The only things that make it worthwhile for me and not mediocre trash (like the majority of Illumination films) are the references and the soundtrack.

Have to say I saw this reaction coming from a mile away. Gamers lose their shit whenever an anticipated title doesn't get the score they think it deserves even before they've had a chance to play it themselves. Game reviewers have received death threats because a game got a 9.7 instead of a perfect 10. It's ridiculous, and I say that as someone who has been playing video games since the Atari days.
The Mario movie looks cool but Illumination doesn't exactly have the best reputation for strong stories and writing. I don't think I've liked anything they've made since Despicable Me 2. I'll probably see the Mario movie at some point and I'm sure I'll enjoy it for what it is, but I absolutely agree that the people trying to excuse the writing by saying it's a kids movie are wrong. That just a cop out.

I think the main reason for this whole controversy, is that the general audiences doesn't understand that when critics gives a movie 5 or 6/10, that doesn't mean it's bad. It's only mean that the movie is average at best. It's inherently the same as common people who's arguing that the movie it's 7/10, calling it: "fun but not great". But the differences here, critics has watch a sh*t tons of movies that their 7/10 spots is reserved for something more prevalent. I mean, if you only had watch 50-100 movies top, that consists of Disney's animation, Netflix romances and MCU, of course your 7/10 spots would be more available. But for a critics that has watch 1000+ movies in their life, 5/10 is an honor really!

People didn't think a kids movie could be smart and enjoyable to adults
so why should they assume the Mario Movie would be any more than a dumb kids movie when they defend it
It all stems from the same place, people just naturally assume that animation is for kids and nothing more even though Comics, Anime, Gaming and Animation have all gone mainstream the stigma behind them never disappeared the words were the only thing that changed, people still view all this stuff as for kids because we haven't moved past not giving a shit what others think, this leads into people caring way too much about a score to justify their own point of view when all that matters is did you like it

There is a difference between making a video game and making a movie. In a movie, an actual storyline is needed to make the film enjoyable. Super Mario bros. Movie has great visuals and nods to the various video games, but lacks any real storyline that makes it worth seeing. It is too safe and too over reliance upon the Mario Ip to make the film truly worthwhile watching. If they had more time to craft a storyline that works for this film, then maybe the criticism would be less.
