I can remember flying on these planes 30-35 years ago. Very comfortable and majestic, beautiful planes. There is a sense of security you feel on a tri-jet, too bad the only ones around anymore in production are the small private Dessault Falcons, but they are gorgeous as well.

    • @mikel2283

I flew on these as a 13 year old (unaccompanied) cross country in '82, and again in '83 and '84. American Airlines and Delta. the 727 was a mainstay for Delta's cross country flights. PHX>DFW>BOS. The sound of those engines in the tri-jet configuration was something I will never forget. spooling up and down, the buzz and whine in perfect harmony. The 737 gives a higher G-Force more aggressive/exciting takeoff, but the 727 was much more luxurious and smooth with a much less aggressive yet confidently assured takeoff. Great memories. (And back then in economy class we all got high quality complete portion HOT meals with the flight at no extra charge). Miss those days.

Enjoy flights on older planes, including MD-88's as they too, get phased out and retired. Airbus seems to run the skies now. Boeing has much more work to do to revitalize its competitive edge again, missing the boat too many times, including lack of replacement plane for the B757, IMHO.

Interesting, I wonder if the odd flap usage is part of the Stage III certification (along with the revised flap detents - note that they never completely retract. I think the Stage III mod uses 2 for 'up'). I imagine the idea is you climb at a slower speed to minimize distance-to-altitude to reduce the noise footprint. I know that new profiles for arrival and departure are part of the certification, I remember reading a LEAPS ad some time ago, and I think it may have mentioned new flap schedules, too.
It's nice to see something like this around somewhere, anyway. The metro area used to be a haven for anyone wanting to see DC-9s and 727s, you could count on seeing the outline of one of those two any time you looked through the skylights at the MOA. These days... not so much. MD80s and MD90s still fly over my house, I guess that's good enough. Never got to fly on a 727, did fly on the 737-200 a couple of times, and the DC-9 twice in its final days with The Airline That Shall Not Be Named Because They Screwed Outstate Minnesota Over. The days of grey, blue, and red DC-10s and DC-9s and 727s rocketing out of MSP are long gone. You know what they say. "You can't go home again."

I flew the 72 for 7 years at Delta. Soon before I moved on to the 75/76 Delta had 4 of the 72's equipped with winglets. I believe the company who did the mod was Valsan. Even when heavy, the clean up schedule was much faster than it was for this flight. We had a few airports where we flew a figure 8 pattern and couldn't exceed 210 kts until a safe terrain clearance altitude was reached (I think it was Missoula, Montana, USA). It may be a noise concern as you mention. The Valsan mod reduced Vne fron 400 to 370 or so and the flaps up setting did leave a slight extension but not 2 degrees. The first flap extension setting (on all 72's modified or not) was 2 degrees and that extended slats 2,3,6 &7. Next was flaps 5 and all LED's extended.

Check out the 727-200ADV.. They are after-market add-ons provided by a company called Quiet Wing Technologies to help improve fuel efficiencies. Some 727s (like the UPS ones) even have their engines replaced with quieter and slightly more fuel efficient ones used on the DC9s or MD80s....
