Mirror Gallery would apply to your opponent as well. I wonder if someone will pick up on that. You could have out 2 Nabans at the same time with a Mirror Gallery! Legendary Creature + Mirror Gallery + clone effects = fun.
OH my gosh, I never realized that the set symbols are based off the Kaldra pieces! Mirrordin is a sword for Sword of Kaldra Darksteel is a shield for Shield of Kaldra Fifth Dawn is a Helm for Helm of Kaldra
they are also in the set they are the symbol of, which means that people knew Helm of Kaldra would be in Fifth Dawn because it is mentioned on the shield.
This episode of against the odds is brought to you by Tomer. Get you're unquestionably constructed commander decks, with maybe way too much card draw in the description down below.
Leonardo Boccaletti I still remember when Seth lost to a crappy standard vampire minotar deck in modern. He was like this will go down as my worst loss in modern of all time this man is playing standard and I'm losing. It was like some jank red black madness vampire and minotar aggro minotars. That ended up winning a against the odds later on and Seth got crushed lol.
I actually really hope we run into D&T so we can see them play Pithing Needle on Helm of Kaldra. It’ll literally be the most ridiculous thing to ever happen in modern Edit: Immediately disappointed
I feel like having open of the armory and mox opal and darksteel citadel plus inventor's Fair might add more speed to the deck and consistency. I'll post a list in a bit.
The token should’ve at least have reach. Should try doing open the armory kaldra. Instead of casting the kaldra pieces just reanimate them. It’s seems like a fun deck idea.
It was used exactly once and it was super key to him winning the game. Also, it was side boarded in all but one game and did nothing a majority of the time. :/ A self mill strategy with open the vaults would have been better.
Hey Seth, great deck! I love Against the Odds and wanted to suggest two cards you haven't gotten around to janking-out yet: Mitotic Slime - 8 bodies for 5 mana in a sacrifice deck Favor of the Mighty - Salvage Titan, Gurmag Angler, cheat big stuff into play
I do enjoy an episode like this every once in a while. I don’t want every against the odds to be this hard to accomplish, but watching the Kaldra’s, and the Eternal dominion’s lose and lose and lose and lose and lose and then finally win is super satisfying!
It sort of goes back to the roots of the series. There was a time where going 1-5 was close to average. I think that when it happens too often it's boring, but once and a while having a really hard to achieve goal is good.
I was expecting Kaldra to be a cooler looking creature... This token just looked like the equipments floating together under water... :/ Still cool to see it tho ^-^
I think Danithas would be better in place of the Anvils, if you want that effect. The body is a lot more relevant in the situations where Anvil isn't worth the mana. Speaking of mama, I would trying swapping out some of the Boots for Paradise Mantle. It cycles you faster, and the bit of ramp could be relevant when you're trying to make a 12 mana 9/9. Also if you really need the hexproof of Boots, you have 4 Steelshaper's Gifts to find it. Finally, the only reason why I wouldn't jam a Batterskull in the 4 Steelshaper's jank deck is that I'd be worried about winning too many games with that card. Still, congratulations making Kaldra in Modern. That''s something to be proud of.
You should really wait until you have 2 pieces of kaldra before casting steelshaper's gift so that you have a higher chance to draw a relevant piece. 6 cards you need to draw is more than 3 cards.
When you have swung with the kaldra token you can cast the ability of the helm again to create a new kaldra that is untapped by sacing the old Kaldra. Basically if you can grant kaldra haste she functionally gets [1]: gain vigilance this turn only.
I never noticed before how all the kaldra pieces were from different sets in the block and how the set symbol for that set was the kaldra piece that was in it
I think this deck could've been a Tron deck - instead of the equipment package (Semblance Anvil, the draw-creatures, the non-Kaldra equipments) play tronlands, Expedition Map, Open the Armory for more tutors, colorfilter artifacts (Chromatic Star, maybe Prophetic Prism). Having the big mana available might make assembling Kaldra easier, and makes you slightly less vulnerable to creature removal, but you also have more tutors available for finding a missing piece (which could also mean you can play less Kaldra pieces and more useful cards).
Here's the best Kaldra list I could come up with. I actually beat U/W control with this deck just now. I originally had ornithopter, but changed it to Salvage scout since it can rebuy one of my artifacts, and it's still a cheap creature that can carry equipments. I didn't want multiple of each Kaldra because they are just bad. It's hard for opponents to deal with though once you have Kaldra Tron enabled. // 60 Maindeck // 19 Artifact 1 Helm of Kaldra 1 Shield of Kaldra 1 Sword of Kaldra 4 Mox Opal 1 Batterskull 1 Swiftfoot Boots 4 Flayer Husk 4 Mishra's Bauble 1 Loxodon Warhammer 1 Sword of Light and Shadow // 7 Creature 4 Puresteel Paladin 3 Salvage Scout // 3 Enchantment 2 Sigarda's Aid 1 Faith's Fetters // 4 Instant 4 Path to Exile // 19 Land 4 Darksteel Citadel 2 Inventors' Fair 4 Horizon Canopy 8 Plains 1 Ghost Quarter // 8 Sorcery 4 Open the Armory 4 Steelshaper's Gift // 15 Sideboard SB: 2 Gaddock Teeg SB: 3 Rest in Peace SB: 4 Leyline of Sanctity SB: 1 Oppressive Rays SB: 1 Dismember SB: 2 Disenchant SB: 1 Wrath of God SB: 1 Day of Judgment
the deck is just better without the Kaldras, so I switched them out for a couple Swords and Godsend. That allowed me to put the ornithopters back in since I care less about reviving equipments. It's by no means great deck, but I've beaten both HollowOne and U/W so far and R/W Walkers so far. It's not bad at least, and that's what counts. I could see it take down an FNM. Fun to play for sure. Batterskull OP
Great video Seth! Wizards was really scared of Kaldra being good, iirc. It sure does feel like it should have nearly every keyword ability found on creatures and be a 12/12.
Open the Armory > Semblance Anvil You are never having trouble casting the pieces (except with Thalia out); you are having trouble GETTING the pieces. I cannot believe you've done this.
I feel like Basilisk Collar is just a better brew around than Kauldra. You could have made the Pingening a thing! Complete the deck with cards like glaring spotlight to kill anything and everything! You could play izzet Staticasters and whatnot to deal with lingering souls
Maybe you can try a different approach to this deck with "artifact reanimation" with stuff like refurbish, instead of relying on pure card draw from */2 creatures
I've never heard of semblance anvil. Am I missing something or could that be used for redundancy in heartless myr? Seems really good, you can tutor/dig for it with the same things you can for the myr. Edit immediately after posting, I guess it doesn't kill the myr. Still seems interesting.
Can you try the Hellkite Charger RR4, Bear Umbra GG2 combo? Hellkite Charger “Flying haste. Whenever Hellkite attacks, you may pay RR5. If you do, untap all attacking creatures and after this phase, there is a additional combat phase” Bear Umbra “Enchant creature. Enchanted creature gets +2/+2 and has whenever this creature attacks untap all lands you control”
At 14:40 if Seth hadn't paid a life to horizon canopy for no reason opponent would not necessarily have won the game next turn at 15:14, as they would've needed an untapped land to pay for all the attacks (Sram can eat one of the dorks) to guarantee victory. And if they'd just attacked with the two 3/3's, Seth would've had another turn.
Semblance Anvil just seems bad. I would play 2 Open the Armory and 2 Mind Stone instead of it. This deck also has too many Srams. Cut 1 for another Danitha. Cut the General Kabuto for a Batterskull. Also, where’s Leonin Abunas in this sideboard??
It seems like this needs more token producers like Lingering souls and Blade Splicer with all the equipments. And adding blue may improve the deck which can deal with some of the bad matchups.
I thought the same about ancient stirring during the first match. Another commentor pointed to open the armory. More tutors might allow playing only 3 of each kaldra. Maybe something like... //Creatures 2 Kemba, Kha Regent 4 Puresteel Paladin 1 Sram, Senior Edificer 2 Steelshaper Apprentice //Enchantments: 1 Sigarda's Aid //Sorceries: 4 Ancient Stirrings 2 Open the Armory 4 Steelshaper's Gift //Instants: 4 Path to Exile //Artifacts: 1 Batterskull 3 Helm of Kaldra 1 Pariah's Shield 3 Shield of Kaldra 3 Swiftfoot Boots 3 Sword of Kaldra //Lands: 1 Buried Ruin 2 Ghost Quarter 4 Horizon Canopy 1 Inventors' Fair 5 Plains 2 Razorverge Thicket 4 Temple Garden 3 Windswept Heath
Lime Shredder he is that's the tag and intro anyone gives him. Everytime he was introduced on the brew crew he was introduced as Seth better know as saffron olive
Why not put 1 copy of world Slayer so you have an indestructible, first strike, trample, exile creatures it deals damage to, and if it deals damage to a player it blows up the board leaving kaldra and any other indestructible things on the battlefield? Seth please It really does warm my heart when ever I assemble or watch Kalrda be assembled. Truly my favorite cards of magic
MTGGoldfish thanks for the reply, I mean you still assembled kaldra ❤️. My kaldra deck runs 2 of each kaldra as well instead of 3. It does ok in my casual setting. But I also have Stone forge mystic and sicardias aid 👍 not modern legal but man is the deck consistent
Wouldn't it be much easier to play one of those Quest for the Holy Relic shells, so that you only need to play 1 of each kaldra pieces, steelshaper's gift + Refurbish for backup ?
If only Stoneforge Mystic was unbanned... To be honest it should be t3 batterskull is probably the best thing going for it. Even that can still kill you most of the time
Want to see Goreclaw, Mirror Gallery, Patient Rebuilding, Sunforger or Jodah next week? Vote here! www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/against-the-odds-kaldra-modern
MTGGoldfish Why didn't you use lightning greaves instead of swiftfoot they have equip 0 just cheaper boots
Mirror Gallery would apply to your opponent as well. I wonder if someone will pick up on that. You could have out 2 Nabans at the same time with a Mirror Gallery! Legendary Creature + Mirror Gallery + clone effects = fun.
Rick Thom I just looked at the legality and it says they were printed in mirrodin and modern legal
Sun forger could be neat, such value
Goreclaw
OH my gosh, I never realized that the set symbols are based off the Kaldra pieces!
Mirrordin is a sword for Sword of Kaldra
Darksteel is a shield for Shield of Kaldra
Fifth Dawn is a Helm for Helm of Kaldra
Oh my. That's really interesting
they are also in the set they are the symbol of, which means that people knew Helm of Kaldra would be in Fifth Dawn because it is mentioned on the shield.
each of them was the prerelease promo for the set too
Basilica Scholar does sound like a cool card...
Payton Hammaker generals kabutoo sounds good tbh
Filleter Husk! Gonna fillet some goldfish...
This episode of against the odds is brought to you by Tomer. Get you're unquestionably constructed commander decks, with maybe way too much card draw in the description down below.
If they exile the Kaldra token, you can just recreate it for 1 mana.
24:20 "There were only two counters in the deck!!! Now I know how Tomer feels."
Man remembering how long it took tomer to do this is still pretty damn funny.
Mind you, tomer tried it in a 100 card singleton format where there were 3 players trying to ruin his fun.
When people ask that Vengevine player what was the worst deck he ever lost to in modern, he has his answer...
Leonardo Boccaletti I still remember when Seth lost to a crappy standard vampire minotar deck in modern. He was like this will go down as my worst loss in modern of all time this man is playing standard and I'm losing. It was like some jank red black madness vampire and minotar aggro minotars. That ended up winning a against the odds later on and Seth got crushed lol.
got the link to that?
This is so true!
deathpyre42 ua-cam.com/video/2qvZlroob1k/v-deo.html this is him playing the deck i can't recall what he lost playing
Thanks
Games @ 10:04
I actually really hope we run into D&T so we can see them play Pithing Needle on Helm of Kaldra. It’ll literally be the most ridiculous thing to ever happen in modern
Edit: Immediately disappointed
Love your pronunciations of absolutely everything
Probably should have Open the Armory for more consistency.
Christian Reinagel Totally agree. I feel like 4 Open the Armory would be way better than the 4 Semblance Anvil.
I also like Haunted Plate Mail for the removal heavy meta. It is basically a crew if you have no creatures.
Donovan Simmons That's pretty spicy! So spicy, it just might work
I feel like having open of the armory and mox opal and darksteel citadel plus inventor's Fair might add more speed to the deck and consistency. I'll post a list in a bit.
I don’t like how Seth pronounces “Basilisk”
I think at this point he mispronounces cards on purpose
same goes for kabuto (kha-bhu-toe) he saying it kabutu... forvo.com/word/kabuto/
Nobody likes how Seth pronounces anything. And for a reason.
Honestly I believe he just doesn't understand phonetics at this point. Or fantasy creatures, which is funny since, you know...
Kaldra in a Tron shell might work, plus then it's regular Tron and "kaldra Tron"
We need to come up with a third theme so it can be Tron Tron
@@ShiningSpear the kaladesh modules?
The token should’ve at least have reach. Should try doing open the armory kaldra. Instead of casting the kaldra pieces just reanimate them. It’s seems like a fun deck idea.
Um, got a list for that?
deathpyre42 no but a fun tech card I’m thinking about that could be in the deck is mirror gallery. Why not have all the kaldra cards in play lol
deathpyre42 www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/1273993#paper
Seth, this is my favorite video of yours. I love the humor and the excitement.
Keep stonerorge mystic banned *in the musical voice of Vince*
Reid’s Beads IN MODERN
Lol my favourite little schtick of his by far
Sigarda's Aid or Open the Armory in place of useless (it wasn't used single time) anvil, and deck will run smoother.
It was used exactly once and it was super key to him winning the game. Also, it was side boarded in all but one game and did nothing a majority of the time. :/ A self mill strategy with open the vaults would have been better.
Tomer is going to be proud!!!
You did it! Too bad it wasn't a flying boi
I definitely think you should have splashed green just for ancient stirrings. It is such a powerful card for this strategy.
Hey Seth, great deck! I love Against the Odds and wanted to suggest two cards you haven't gotten around to janking-out yet:
Mitotic Slime - 8 bodies for 5 mana in a sacrifice deck
Favor of the Mighty - Salvage Titan, Gurmag Angler, cheat big stuff into play
Sound sweet!
This is insane, I love it! Kuldra is actually true TRON!
Seth assembles kaldra at 33:13 and 37:45
Lizard Wizard thank you Soo much
Assembling it and still losing to the cute Bogles, that's a technically won game for sure xD
I was expecting Kaldra to be a cooler looking creature... This token just looked like the equipments floating together under water... :/
Still cool to see it tho ^-^
I'VE WAITED SO LONG FOR SOMEONE TO POST SOMETHING LIKE THIS AAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Let's revisit with the Stoneforge unbanning!
36:47 you can even hear Seth's chair squeak in his excitement to the chance of assemble Kaldra AND win aggainst Bridgevine!!!
seth pls i need sleep why do you keep doing this to me lmao
Several commentors mentioned some ideas I also had in mind. Maybe something like...
//Creatures:
2 Kemba, Kha Regent
4 Puresteel Paladin
1 Sram, Senior Edificer
2 Steelshaper Apprentice
//Enchantments:
1 Sigarda's Aid
//Sorceries:

2 Open the Armory
4 Steelshaper's Gift
//Instants:

//Artifacts:

3 Helm of Kaldra
1 Pariah's Shield
3 Shield of Kaldra
3 Swiftfoot Boots
3 Sword of Kaldra
//Lands:
1 Buried Ruin
2 Ghost Quarter
4 Horizon Canopy
1 Inventors' Fair
5 Plains
2 Razorverge Thicket
4 Temple Garden
3 Windswept Heath
Call the cops. Tomer is holding Seth hostage.
I can't believe you didn't include worldbreaker! That just wins the game!
Well, that was painful , but at least Tomer must be proud.
Still, congratulations making Kaldra in Modern. That''s something to be proud of.
More Danithas could work, although it's slightly annoying that she's legendary.
You should really wait until you have 2 pieces of kaldra before casting steelshaper's gift so that you have a higher chance to draw a relevant piece. 6 cards you need to draw is more than 3 cards.
"Now I know how Tomer feels"
It's ok Seth. We will need you to get an abacus by tomorrow morning though
When you have swung with the kaldra token you can cast the ability of the helm again to create a new kaldra that is untapped by sacing the old Kaldra. Basically if you can grant kaldra haste she functionally gets [1]: gain vigilance this turn only.
My bad she naturally has haste lol.
SAFF YOU ARE THE BEST MTG CONTENT CREATOR ON UA-cam PERIOD I ADMIRE YOU I LOVE YOUR VIDEO KEEP ON POSTING MORE VIDÉO PLEASE
General's KABOOTOO.
Never change Seth
He accidentally said it right at one point :p
You built my EDH deck in Modern. Awesome.
Against The Odds: Tomer Edition.
I never noticed before how all the kaldra pieces were from different sets in the block and how the set symbol for that set was the kaldra piece that was in it
Seemed like a Wrath of God would have been a great maindeck option. This decks creature count is so small, that it wouldn't mind resetting the board.
And even if it does care settle would have been nice to have.
More removal could be good.
I have a complete foil kaldra set, it is the cornerpiece of my collection, even though far from the most expensive :)
Awesome!
I almost excepted "hey guys it's Tomer here as a guest on against the odds!"
Hmm, that could work. For some reason I tend to avoid Tron.
Maybe is good in this deck the card board the weatherlight, can find artifacs and sram or danitha
"I would rather our opponent not see more of our deck" why? you afraid they would die of laughing?
That Kaldra token art is so ugly LOL
DakingofAP It's even worse because it's just three pieces floating in the air.
When I clicked on this video I thought it was going to be a special Tomer edition of Against the Odds
I should have gotten Tomer to do it!
Helm of the host + grand arbiter Agustin IV, ultimate jank out via taxes!
Ew, that's just mean... I love it!
This is why I'm banned from playing blue
Here's the best Kaldra list I could come up with. I actually beat U/W control with this deck just now. I originally had ornithopter, but changed it to Salvage scout since it can rebuy one of my artifacts, and it's still a cheap creature that can carry equipments. I didn't want multiple of each Kaldra because they are just bad. It's hard for opponents to deal with though once you have Kaldra Tron enabled.

the deck is just better without the Kaldras, so I switched them out for a couple Swords and Godsend.
“Well that was fun” he says with a grimace playing against hate-bears
Great video Seth!
Wizards was really scared of Kaldra being good, iirc. It sure does feel like it should have nearly every keyword ability found on creatures and be a 12/12.
Yeah, I was thinking that too. It also might be that Mirrordin was 15 years ago now, so maybe a 9/9 Kaldra was scarier back then.
Open the Armory > Semblance Anvil
You are never having trouble casting the pieces (except with Thalia out); you are having trouble GETTING the pieces.
I just realized that each expansion symbol from the block is each part of the kaldra-tron
Taking down the new hotness. Way to keep things cool Seth.
24:22 when the dream dies
Dreams never die. They just become infect players
I think a more colorless version with Urzatron would work better. Honor-Worn Shaku works well with legendary equipment
Hmm, mabye Kaldra Tron Tron is the the way to go
Why not add Tron lands? Could cast those bigger things faster. I guess you have some important double white with paladin though...
Maybe you can try a different approach to this deck with "artifact reanimation" with stuff like refurbish, instead of relying on pure card draw from */2 creatures
"We got it, we got it! Kaldra coming through!"
League record: 0-10
I'd love to see a version of this in a kind of hammertime shell.
How about focusing on green for ancient stirrings and mana dorks to equip stuff while grinding for Kaldra?
I've never heard of semblance anvil. Am I missing something or could that be used for redundancy in heartless myr? Seems really good, you can tutor/dig for it with the same things you can for the myr.
Edit immediately after posting, I guess it doesn't kill the myr. Still seems interesting.
It could work in a ramp-based Heartless Summoning deck, it's just risky since if something goes wrong you 2-for-1 yourself.
Can you try the Hellkite Charger RR4, Bear Umbra GG2 combo?
Hellkite Charger “Flying haste. Whenever Hellkite attacks, you may pay RR5. If you do, untap all attacking creatures and after this phase, there is a additional combat phase”
Bear Umbra “Enchant creature. Enchanted creature gets +2/+2 and has whenever this creature attacks untap all lands you control”
Wow, this deck is literally against the odds.
I love this deck dude
Thanks!
I don't think that's how you pronounce basilisk collar
Any thoughts of replacing Semblance Anvil with Ancient Stirrings Seth?
At 14:40 if Seth hadn't paid a life to horizon canopy for no reason opponent would not necessarily have won the game next turn at 15:14, as they would've needed an untapped land to pay for all the attacks (Sram can eat one of the dorks) to guarantee victory. And if they'd just attacked with the two 3/3's, Seth would've had another turn.
We ended up casting Path though, so we used all of our mana.
dedicated to tomer?
You know how a stream or two ago you were talking about how pros were talking about the worst deck they lost against. This is that deck.
All we need now is a mirror gallery to create an endless army of 1 mana Kaldras!
Creating Kaldra loops out with ashnods altar. 1 mana for kaldra, sac it for 2.
Is it really necessary to protect kaldra by giving it hexproof? After all you can make a new token for only 1 mana.
Maybe not.
Ugggggggh "Now I know how Tomer feels" ... LMAO!
It seems like this needs more token producers like Lingering souls and Blade Splicer with all the equipments. And adding blue may improve the deck which can deal with some of the bad matchups.
I think you should revisit this deck after SFM is eventually unbanned. Kidding/not kidding
Stoneforge Mystic would be great.
I love against the odds, you never know what will happen. sometimes ya win and sometimes you get your face smashed in 10 times in a row
Needs Open the Armory for more consistency and Sigarda's Aid so that the pieces aren't worthless before you get all three.
6:41 : What is that card??? Never heard of it before... ;)
No ancient stirrings?
I was thinking Steelshaper's Gift would be enough, but maybe it's not.
I thought the same about ancient stirring during the first match. Another commentor pointed to open the armory. More tutors might allow playing only 3 of each kaldra.
Maybe something like...
//Creatures
2 Kemba, Kha Regent
4 Puresteel Paladin
1 Sram, Senior Edificer
2 Steelshaper Apprentice
//Enchantments:
1 Sigarda's Aid
//Sorceries:

2 Open the Armory
4 Steelshaper's Gift
//Instants:

//Artifacts:

4 Horizon Canopy
1 Inventors' Fair

isn't it a good deck to play board to wetherlight? I mean, in this deck it is almost like a 2 mana acient stirings
If any deck could make it work it's probably this one.
I think that would allow you to play less copies of keldra picies and more relevant things, like prision cards
Why not splash green for ancient stirrings for them deep digs?
At this point Seth is probably better known as "Seth probably better known as Saffron Olive"
Seth please
It really does warm my heart when ever I assemble or watch Kalrda be assembled. Truly my favorite cards of magic
Could replace the General's Kabotu package.
Hey Seth how much would it be to mail you a playset of Panharmonicon to have you sign and send back?
Free! Just include a SASE so I can get them back to you. PO Box 110, Clyde NY, 14433
If Stoneforge Mystic gets unbanned, you should revisit this deck. That may almost make it fast enough.
Wouldn't it be much easier to play one of those Quest for the Holy Relic shells, so that you only need to play 1 of each kaldra pieces, steelshaper's gift + Refurbish for backup ?
SPOILERS!
You know it's a hard deck to play when you see that beautiful 1-10 after nearly thirty nine minutes.
Why would not not search to path?
I think running the tron lands wouldn't have been a bad idea in this deck, just as a way to make big mana fast
Yeah, Tron lands could be good.
37:37 the moment of glory boys
Bass-ah-lisk
If only Stoneforge Mystic was unbanned... To be honest it should be t3 batterskull is probably the best thing going for it. Even that can still kill you most of the time
