@@fluffykins1460 I believe there were 4 Chandra planeswalker cards in M20. I feel everyone forgets that Chandra, Flame's Fury existed since it was overshadowed by Chandra, Awakened Inferno.
I'd also like to know what the total number of printings of each planeswalker are, not just how many unique cards each walker has. That may help explain the Jace fatigue.
Nothing in the entire game of magic makes you feel more defeated than when your opponent says “you can keep it”. The game is not over, but you’ve already lost
There’s also the mind game of telling an opponent they can keep a good card so that they fetch into potentially a bad card I watched a recent tour where fate sealing was relevant because of the tricks Jace players did
aayacrance that couldn’t be farther from the truth lol. Jace is still the premier top end for control or blue-based midrange, and stoneforge Mystic is the best fair white card you can play. Both are very playable, but neither are broken in the slightest (mostly because modern is still dominated by unfair or linear decks).
It could be worse. You could keep a good card at the top just to exile it using something like Ashiok. You could also yoink that card and cast it as your own. Because you really like tormenting your opponent.
I have a friend who is a really good deckbuilder, and he decided to make a meme deck once; it basically ran 2-4 copies of each Jace variant... It actually won a lot... but one game he almost got all 9 out at once, and then, gloriously, I top-decked Merciless Eviction. It was pretty merciless indeed.
What I find fascinating about this video is just how much its perspective on things has changed in such a relatively short amount of time. In less than three years, Jace has been unbanned and barely impacted modern, Planeswalkers have cemented themselves even further as the games premier card type with Wren and Six, both 3 and 5 mana Teferis, and of course, BrOko been banned in nearly all formats. There's also both WAR Narset and Karn, which have both been restricted. Furthermore, in the past 3 years of the total 13 years of Planeswalkers being a card type, the amount of them has more than doubled from 102 that were present during this videos' production to the over 200 we have now (exact number of 215 as of August of 2020). It goes to show both how Magic as a game evolves, and more specifically a shift in a certain aspect of design, that being Planeswalkers and their Power Level, and what I find even more interesting about all of this is that the modern increase of power level of planeswalkers can be traced back to, in my knowledge, Battle for Zendikar and the Gideon card printed in that set (Although it is arguable that Magic Origins and the printing of Jace, Vryn's Prodigy and all of the flip walkers in that started off this shift) which 'coincidentally' ties into the start of the modern age of Magic Storytelling and the shift to a more long form narrative with the central characters of the Gatewatch. Which then raises the question, which came first, the desire to print more and more powerful planeswalkers, or the desire to tell a greater narrative (basically all of the Gatewatch/Bolas Arc)? That I don't have an answer for. If one of the few readers of this comment knows, please share, preferably with cited sources.
I started playing Magic in 2010, saw a red dragon tribal deck (iirc) at a game store and begged my mom to buy it for me, along with a single booster pack. I opened Jace, The Mind Sculptor in the very first Magic booster pack I ever opened. I had no idea what value he had, but he was the only Planeswalker I had and I thought that was just so unique and cool, so he was my favorite and I shoved him into every deck I built (including the dragon deck--I was not a very good deck builder). He's in awful shape now, water damaged and bent and unplayable without sleeves because of how distinctly the card back has worn. But I keep him double sleeved, protected and in a secure spot, and even as my interest in Magic has waxed and waned, he's my most prized card and I'll always keep him around. I just find it so funny how I managed to have the amazingly good luck to immediately open one of the infamous cards in Magic history, and yet have absolutely zero clue about his value until he was already pretty much destroyed from use. It reminds me of my first few years playing Magic, and he never fails to make me smile.
Jace fatigue has quickly become jace nostalgia. Seeing Jace be completely overrun ever since the war of the spark era has been disheartening for those of us who loved the card (especially now that bowmasters and the one ring both exist)
I remeber hearing a story of a guy opening a foil Jace on prerelease, sat up, took the Jace and all his belongings and walked out the door. It was kind of a small place at the time and it was winner got to take first pick of the card pool. He was banned for awhile.

10:41, Jace's distribution is as prevalent as we think it is. You called out Garruk, Gideon, Liliana, Nissa, and Chandra. Throw in Ajani and you have account for half of the planeswalkers ever printed between seven characters and Jace has the most of all. At nine cards Jace makes up almost a tenth of all planeswalker cards ever printed. Furthermore, Lorwyn was released in October of 2007, which means there has been a new Jace almost ever year since the planeswalker card type was introduced and when there wasn't a new one, there was a reprint of an old one. All of that makes him very prevalent and his ubiquity anything but false perception.
He also failed to mention that Jace hate has not-so-much to do with the number of cards he has, but the amount and tone of snarky Jace comments in flavor text across a huge number of cards. He seems like the obnoxious self-insert of somebody with a delusional, intellectual superiority complex.
ulrickts, it's both. Jace is a boring asshole that is constantly being used as the face of MTG. I absolutely hate the character. He is in practically every set and has way too many cards of him. This has nothing to do with JTMS as a card. I did not play during that era and I still hate the character. I was praying that Nicol Bolas would kill him off in HoD
A Jace Planeswalker card has been in standard every season since Lorwyn, in October of 2007. Over 10 years. THATS where the fatigue is coming from. Just saying 'oh its nine cards' doesn't dismiss that its been over ten years straight now of Jace in standard.
I don`t hate Jace but i simply do not like he`s character many of he`s Planeswalker cards are pretty good or amazing in JTMS case. But i do think that the characters boring and there are so many planeswalkers with great story potential like Ashiok, Elspeth, Dack Fayden, Karn, Koth and many more i would honestly love if the Phyrexians got a planeswalker card or honestly anything to shake up all of the Jace and Gatewatch feeding we have gotten like People have gotten Gideon fatigue as well
@@mmurphy373 Venser is my favourite but they had to go kill him off and we only get ONE planeswalker card of him, and he's about a million times more interesting (even ability wise) than jace ever has been.
There is character fatigue with all of gatewatch, Jace is just predominant because he has 2 more then the next highest amount. Also his face doesn't just appear on planeswalkers. How many cards bare his image/referance him in some way?
i once had a commander deck with flip jace as the commander and very card including the islands had jace in the art. theres literally enough cards with his face on them to build an entire 100 card singleton deck with him only lol.
This video got my sub. I have to say, I'm absolutely transfixed by the way you tell these stories. It's masterful. I can't pinpoint certainly what makes your way of storytelling here so compelling, but I must say I love it. Excellent.
A buddy of mine just introduced me to your channel using the Colors of Ravnica video. Loving what I’m watching! Your vids are simultaneously fascinating and enriching - absolutely deepening my love for an already incredible game. Cheers, brother.
He can only be a one of in the 99. People seem to forget that big threats in Modern/Standard tend to be nothing in Commander since they're a one of. Thoughtseize is powerful but not at all against 4 other players when you have a single copy in your deck you'll more than likely never see due to odds.
He's not really all that good in commander, at least not multiplayer, 3+ other people 3 times the likelihood for there to be answers, ability only targets one player. He doesn't work with Doubling Season. He's just okay in a commander game.
I think you described Jace as a whole. Through this video you painted a picture of what is Jace. I'm a fan of blue and he is my favorite planeswalker. So thank you for the great content as always.
as someone who's never so much as touched a magic card, but has a lot of experience across a wide range of card games, these videos are fantastic, and you do a great job both dramatizing and authentically telling the history of this game. thank you so much, great source to learn about both design and history
I loved this video! It had such a great, lore like feel. I wasn't able to play with The Mind Sculptor when it was insane in standard, but I remember a con I went to that was running a tournament and walking the tables and only seeing the Caw Blade deck. I had never seen the like and it was something to behold. Really great vid!
I'm so glad UA-cam decided to pop your video on automatically after a Rudy video. This is fantastic stuff man, and I can tell it's hard work putting these together. Bravo!
Jace was banned July 1, 2011 Zendikar block was scheduled to rotate September 30, 2011 They banned Jace and Stoneforge Mystic only 3 months before their planned rotation. That's like if two douchebags were at a club and they were on their way to the door, when suddenly two bouncers grabbed and threw them outside.
This video is most nostalgic mtg video for me. reminds me of good times with my best friend. he and i dont talk anymore and i havent played this game since. its been four years. i cracked out my old decks to look at them and was flooded with old memories of good times. this is still my favorite card.
In Modern, powerful linear strategies can win turn 3. Storm, burn, vizier/druid combo, affinity, etc. In Modern, the best 'fair deck' can counter that turn 4 jace for 1 mana with a stubborn denial. Modern games are regularly over by the time Jace had the chance to activate once or twice. He's obviously strong, but considering how few and far between you get good Modern control decks, Jace seems a reasonable supplement to a weak archetype.
I remember after the 2nd print run of worldwake. I was at my LGS for a draft, and was surprised because it was a 30$draft because drafting worldwake. I did not play blue in my drafts then, so woe was me when 2nd pack I open a JTMS. Ended up giving it to a friend for a future card of my pick when he was 120$ non foil.
I would have to disagree with you on the point that "Jace-Fatigue" is only based on perspective. While there may be only nine cards depicting our favorite mind mage, he's had a major part in the story of a majority of the blocks released since Return to Ravnica. It's not that people are complaining that there are too many Jace cards (although some may argue this as well), but that Wizards seems to be using him a a character in almost every new story.
He had no part in Alara, Mirrodin, original Innistrad, Theros, Tarkir. And he only showed up in the following blocks because of the Gatewatch, and not all of them had cards of Jace. While he is indeed the most used character, it isn't as much as people think it is.
He is a convenient perspective for Wizards to use. A relatively muted personality who can read minds makes for an easy method of delivering exposition. I would assume that's one of the other big reasons behind this feeling
He appears as a character in approximately 40 Magic Story articles of over 230 total. In 1 Planeswalker novel of 3 total. In 1 post-Mending block novel series of 5 total. Even if you were to cut pre-RTR story content away, Jace isn't present in anywhere near a majority of the stories.
I love it Sam! Every time you release a new video, I think there's no way the next one can be so amazing. And every time i think that, you prove me wrong. I loved the deep-dive, especially because I started playing (long) after Jace the Mind Sculptor was in standard. This provided a lot of cool backstory that I didn't know before!
You missed one of the largest component of why Jace was so busted: Gideon Jura. Gideon was the lock for the deck. turn 4 jace to 5 jura meant game. And Jace/Gideon was the bulwark against Valakut. The other broken deck.
Just had a thought about jace the mind sculptor vs oko and how Jace while powerful stuck around for a while and also shows how far power creep has come. I'd love to see a video about power creep! And seeing very clearly evidence like that
Hello, long time lurker and big fan of your content, and would like to chime in. I think a huge proponent of JTMS of being a "villain" is the card does not actually kill you or winning the game on the spot. Unlike Emrakul just simply attacks, you lose some permanents and a huge chunk of life total, and you go to the next game, When you cast JTMS on an empty board, he just cutting your chances of winning from 50% to 10% (or less) by either giving you a bad card in +2 ability, or bury you in card advantage in the 0 ability. You still have a slight chance to win the game even Jace is on board, but the chances are slim enough that you still lose anyway, and frustratingly thinking "Why I do not just concede instead of putting myself into this torturing game". The despair of Jace slowly but surely devouring your mind (and the game) is the perfect image that stuck in everybody's mind (heh) to be a villain.
Its interesting coming back here after a couple years, times sure have changed. Jace the once overpowered insane card is now what id consider a relatively fair and well designed planeswalker. Its been unbanned along with stoneforge and nowhere near as busted as people feared, set after set has drawfed these cards in powerlevel and overall they've been pushed into just playables
We've moved on into an environment where even 'underpowered' sets can still give you turn 2 kills in nearly-standard sets. All hail the kobold lethal meme deck.

Fun parallel you drew with the boogeyman and Jace. Good storytelling.
Enjoying rewatching some great Rhystic Studies episodes
Now we have both Stoneforge and Jace. What a time to be alive
Excellent.
This video is actually still pretty insightful in retrospect post-ban. You did your research well!
A buddy of mine just introduced me to your channel using the Colors of Ravnica video. Loving what I’m watching! Your vids are simultaneously fascinating and enriching - absolutely deepening my love for an already incredible game. Cheers, brother.
Hello from the future. Jace, the Mind Sculpter has been completely power crept out of modern, and is currently only $20.00.
Keep It comning TheMagicManSam.
In my opinion you're amongst the most interesting magic related youtube content out there.
Good to know other people were freaked the fk out by their friends doing the bloody mary thing....
Every video you make is a masterpiece. Can't thank you enough for your dedication to your craft.
*jace gets unbanned* "oh" *deconstructs all modern decks for cards to move to commander decks*
Matiya024 he's legal in commander
He can only be a one of in the 99. People seem to forget that big threats in Modern/Standard tend to be nothing in Commander since they're a one of. Thoughtseize is powerful but not at all against 4 other players when you have a single copy in your deck you'll more than likely never see due to odds.
jace isnt that good in commander cause there are multiple people
He's not really all that good in commander, at least not multiplayer, 3+ other people 3 times the likelihood for there to be answers, ability only targets one player. He doesn't work with Doubling Season. He's just okay in a commander game.
Never saw a planeswalker performing well in our commander games.
He’s back boys
I think you described Jace as a whole. Through this video you painted a picture of what is Jace. I'm a fan of blue and he is my favorite planeswalker. So thank you for the great content as always.
as someone who's never so much as touched a magic card, but has a lot of experience across a wide range of card games, these videos are fantastic, and you do a great job both dramatizing and authentically telling the history of this game. thank you so much, great source to learn about both design and history
Ohhhh I love this videos!!! Thank you!!
You make great content keep it up
I'm so glad UA-cam decided to pop your video on automatically after a Rudy video. This is fantastic stuff man, and I can tell it's hard work putting these together. Bravo!
thank you so much!!
WOW SAM. Just wow. Perfect combination of story, play, and lore. Absolutely beautiful. Well done.
Dude, this channel rocks. Not many folks get me to sub within three minutes of their first video I watch but you pulled it off.
Jace was banned July 1, 2011
Zendikar block was scheduled to rotate September 30, 2011
They banned Jace and Stoneforge Mystic only 3 months before their planned rotation. That's like if two douchebags were at a club and they were on their way to the door, when suddenly two bouncers grabbed and threw them outside.
they banned him from modern too not just standard
Not to mention 3onths is a long time in standard to only see one truly viable deck
Oh this is gold. T3feri banned weeks before he rotated.
This video is most nostalgic mtg video for me. reminds me of good times with my best friend. he and i dont talk anymore and i havent played this game since. its been four years. i cracked out my old decks to look at them and was flooded with old memories of good times. this is still my favorite card.
Teferi Time Raveller: Hold my Beer
Matthew Staats oko...
@@joshwhitmire5753 ya oko is definitely better then them both
No one comes even remotely close to the content you have generated on your channel. Really really awesome work.
Opponent- *taps out and plays jace*
Me an intellectual storm player- guess I'll win
I appreciate all of the random information about jace!! I appreciate all the work you out into these videos man
In Modern, powerful linear strategies can win turn 3.
William Butler Humans doesn’t play Stubborn Denial, just going to put that out there.
Brilliant work as per usual, you always exceed my expectations with each new entry to your library!
Two unbannings, one Oko and two Teferis later, this video didn't age very well
I remember after the 2nd print run of worldwake.
Beleren Typeface as well?
What does he mean 'only nine cards'? Jace has nine fucking cards! That's a lot!
"I wanna talk about how worldwake in type 2 will be more then just 'Jace is good'. Let me start by talking about how Jace will define the format"
I don’t even play magic, I just like hearing someone talk passionately about something! Also your voice is nice!
Superb!!! Love it sam!
Man, your videos are awesome. The way you present the information and how you build a narrative around it is so pleasant. Keep up the good work!
You missed one of the largest component of why Jace was so busted: Gideon Jura.
Gideon was the lock for the deck. turn 4 jace to 5 jura meant game.
And Jace/Gideon was the bulwark against Valakut. The other broken deck.
CawGo/CawBlade was one hell of an intense time. Once Bloodbraid rotated, shit went mental.
Exceptionally well thought out and above par editing, which for you is par for the course lol, keep up the awesome ^_^.
and here we are... the boogeyman unleashed!
I love that a card that was named "The mind sculptor" altered the minds of so many real life players
He's back
This is probably my favorite video you've done, and that's saying quite a lot because I love most of them
I'm an Elf mage....I see Jace , the Mind sculptor? My army has already killed him...and I keep going. Never was afraid of this card.
Andy Hall you haven’t played a good control player then....
ONce again, never played a game of Magic in my life, but your videos are absolutely captivating to watch
The "Boogeyman of magic"
Laughts in Oko thief of Crowns
This is the best, well put together video I've ever seen on magic. Thank you for the time you put into this
Aaannnnddd....UNBANNED
Just had a thought about jace the mind sculptor vs oko and how Jace while powerful stuck around for a while and also shows how far power creep has come. I'd love to see a video about power creep! And seeing very clearly evidence like that
love how all these op cards are unbanned now
Your videos are pure editorial genius. They come across like mini-documentaries.
Another example for the beginning is the Scottish play.
All hail the kobold lethal meme deck.
rewatching some of your old videos is making me want to get back into magic lol. Haven't played since Throne of Eldraine released
This card is why i am Jace-ist.
