You put a new battery in and it still chirps? You then try another new battery and it still chirps? Take it and set smoke detector on the ground. Take a bat, the kind you use in the game of baseball- and pound it with the bat until it is in little bits & pieces. You can also use a few choice words if necessary as it's 3 in the morning!!
The next day- go and buy a new smoke detector. Good luck!

lol, this comment is too funny. My alarm started non chirping early in the morning too..after putting in a new battery, I just wanted to take my broom and knock it off the ceiling.
Friday Vibes By a new smoke detector, you probably should mean a nest protect.
😁😁😁😁I feel you!!!!💯
This video misses a critical piece of information, which is why probably most people are confused about their beeping smoke detector with a brand new battery. You have to press and hold the Test button for 20 seconds after removing the old battery in order to clear the memory. Then after putting a new battery in, you press the Test button once (be prepared, it will do a round of the full alarm). After that, it should stop beeping.
Thank you! I couldn't figure out why it was still churning after replacing the battery. it was driving me insane. your tip really worked to hold it down for 20sec..:)
Glad I was able to help Beth :)
I'll give this one a try! Thanks so much!
tinytimies thank you sooooo much for this!!! I was about to ripe the stupid thing out the ceiling!!!
Thank You!!!!! It worked! The holding down for 20 sec. and then install and hit test. Silence for 5 minutes and you were the only one who gave the simple fix!!
Here's an idea- have smoke detectors programmed to send texts to users' phones or emails to their inboxes when they're low on batteries, rather than giving us a heart attack at 4:00AM.
Yes! Amen!
+ghiiitrooper Um, liberals will bern such thought at the Bernie stake, because, you don't know how to take care of yourself.

Oh, I forgot that pre-teens like to make everything political on the internet.
Now, back along to your friends on the playground.
Firstname Lastname You started it, kiddo.
rofl!!! so true....the batteries only seem to go low in the middle of the night! hahaha
True mine I came close to a nervous breakdown couldn't get it to stop. I appreciate this video. God Bless you for taking the time to instruct and help those as myself that are challenged with technology.
Thank you! The key for me was "press the test button" ... that helped me realize that the battery wasn't correctly in the carriage, so it wasn't being detected. Helps restore my sanity after a night of chirping alarm madness. :-)
Great help after seeing the clip. Same chirps problem after changing the new battery (may be old batter got mixed up with new set of batteries). Changed really a new battery, the problem got fixed. Thank you for the help :)
god bless me and keep me from this chirping sound smoke alarm before i go crazy.
Yes Lord. Deliver me from this chirp before I die
why the fuck do these shits ONLY go off at night
a fucking men...... hate that shit
9V battery voltage will drop just enough when the temperature gets a few degrees cooler, enough to trigger the chirping state.
I had 25 new detectors in a box since 1998, I thought they were no good when I put a battery in each one to try them out, they continued to chirp after installing a new battery. Then I followed this guy's advice and held the test button in for 20 secs. and WA- LA, they all work fine. I guess they do last longer than 5 years.
Thanks Gabe...2012 vid helped. Only issue is I purchase NEW batteries at the local grocery store....the battery meter measure only 50% power and was the cause of continuous beeping. Of course I returned the batteries. Thanks...especially for the tip of replacing units older than 5 years

Direct and to the point. Thank you.
Hello
You missed the real point.
All you said is right but note that after removing the old battery then press and hold the push button and ensure that all charge is gone. Smoke detectors have some condensers which will store some energy and if you don;t discharge then it will keep chirp immaterial whether it is new or old.
So discharging the charge stored is very very important.
Good luck.!
Worked. Thanks my friend
Little tip I learned today. I replaced the batteries in my chirping detectors and they continued to chirp. It turns out rechargeable 9V batteries are closer to 7.5 volts and will not work. The most recommended batteries I saw were Energizer lithium with a 10 year shelf life. A bit expensive though.
Thank you. Very helpful information.
Thank you! The test button was the key to make it stop!
thanks for the information.
Thanks ... You're a life saver.
I am a Canadian Fire Inspector, if your smoke alarm continues to chirp your instruction manual ( you threw out years ago) may have indicated that this sound is the "End Of Life Signal" indicating you shall replace the smoke alarm. If the smoke alarm gives you any trouble, replace it, your life or someone else's may depend on it.
Thanks A million & God Bless You Sir!Add Love!™
Thank you
This is what works for me. If detector starts to chirp, I take it down and vacuum it. Dust, cob webs, insects, and various debris can get inside and fool detector causing it to chirp. Next, I put the battery in and let detector sit near me for couple of hours (while I watch TV), making sure it does not chirp. Then I reinstall it. In many cases I was able to reuse the same battery since chirping had nothing to do with it.
Thanks for sharing the great video. I will also try suggested steps by
tinytimies
thank you so much this really helped me out. Turns out my smoke detector expired two years ago.
Thank you for this video God Bless you for your services 💙 💙 💙.
Thank you 🙏🏼
Thank You very much🙏🏾🙌🏾
THANKS MAN!
Tried everything suggested in this video and enjoyed 8 minutes of blissful silence...then the alarm started chirping again 😣
Thanks
Thanks so much for a super clear and important explanation. Your presentation is why I love UA-cam for household problems.!
Yeah, I've tried all tricks to get the chirping to stop.....the date on the back is tough to read, but it might be like 10 years old. $20 for a new one....a potential life saver...yeah, probably best to just get a new one...thanks for the suggestion.
WTh hell happened to the old school smoke alarms! WHO ever created this freaking stupid alarm should be fined & jailed!
I had to come back & re comment. Silly me didn't change the batteries in all of my smoke alarms & that's the reason for the beeping. I'm not knowinh I had more than 3 smoke alarms...lol! Silly me! They all are working perfect! haha....
yeah to reset the alarm and discharge the stored voltage in the capacitor you have to hold down the test button for 20 seconds then replace the battery. if it still beeps every minute, replace it. they are programmed to malfunction so that there is a turnover for the alarm company.
The standard smoke alarms (ionization) contains Americium-241 which breaks down over time which is why the manufactuer recomends replacing them at the 10 year mark. You can purchase an aersol that can be used to test your sensor to see if it is still working. The cost of the smoke alarms over a 10 yr period is fairly inexpensive to protect your loved ones. The other type of smoke alarms is a photo-electric version. NFPA.org has a realm of info on smoke alarms and recommendations on which type (ionization or photo-electric) to install in your home.
I hate smoke detectors on principle. They are literally designed to be annoying. "Oh you have a new battery installed? Well fuck you I'm going to beep some more at 4 am." There are days that I want to just rip that piece of crap out of the wall and take my chances
Yeah, and nuclear power would be so much cheaper if they didn't bother with all the silly and expensive safety and backup equipment. . But yeah, I bet there's a market for a smoke alarm with an extra sensor and programming so that it won't chirp if the room is dark.
Thanks Joey Papa Coffee Consultant
After the battery is replaced and tested, should the LED indicator be red or green at the regular function?
thank you...now i replaced the battery(new) an i tested it, ok. ? Is the smoke detector supposed to flash every minute or so once new battery is installed?
Like he said at 1:02, definitely clean smoke detectors often by vacuuming. I had a smoke detector (fairly new, still in warranty) beeping even with a new battery , and when I called the manufacturer's tech support they told me to first try vacuuming out the dust. I figured they were just wasting my time, but I tried it and it worked! A second unit started doing the same thing, and vacuuming it fixed it too!
Wow that actually helped, thanks.
Thank you. This helped me A LOT. Of course mine went off at 2am and not 2pm.
this was the most helpful video i have ever watched. you not only saved my life (i will not burn in a fire) but also (my sanity--i have high anxiety). you are a great man and a great actor. thank you.
Short, simple and to the point.
Thanks bro!
I usually do not post on these threads but since I was not able to find a viable solution after looking through a few sources, I thought I would provide the issue that fixed my chirping detector (Kiddie 1XXX - hardwired with frontal backup 9V battery) even AFTER battery replacement AND system reset.
The problem with a few of these smoke detectors is the sensitivity of these devices to the BRAND and MODEL of batteries used, they require SPECIFIC batteries to be used. This can normally be found with the instruction guide/box/or even behind the detector.
Although it is tempting to go to your local store that sells batteries and purchase the most inexpensive (generic) 9V battery, unfortunately this may be the issue for some detectors that will not stop chirping after battery replacement and reset. For example, although I tried a Duracell Long Life battery it continued to chirp, I had to use the Energizer 522/1X222 battery to prevent further chirping/false alarms.
Great video thanks :-)
I am sick to death of these people telling ME what's best for me. Chirping detector all night...so I change batteries, and still chirping like crazy. BRAND NEW battery.
+RD S If you're sure the battery is good, it may be storing a code. Twist the detector to separate it from its mounting plate, unplug the detector, take the battery out, hold the test button down for several seconds, put the battery back in, plug the detector in, and twist it back into its mounting plate. If the beeping is caused by a stored code, that should clear it and stop the chirping.
Like said , Most Detectors have a " monitored service life" internal clock that counts the time passed before they "must" be replaced ,, the alarm chip inside the detector has a set service life clock that can not be reset and it will chirp at end of its useful life as a reminder ,,The end of service life chirp is usually different from the low battery chirp and can not be reset ,, the detectors manual will tell you "replace unit x number of years after its installed" .
Hey I have 4 smoke detectors chirping I change the batteries it still chirping so how you tell with one bad the detectors to change thanks?or resetting
ALL mine -- (8) went off from midnight to 11 am --- There was ONE alarm removed from the electrical connection that still had the battery IN it… Even though it was unhooked… It was still going off…. earplugs and lotza alcohol is what you need on hand.. in the middle of the night…
Multi station smoke detector commercial UA-cam video, saving lives
i had the sporadic chirping on five old hard wired. So i replaced all units as they came with 10 year batteries. now about 4 months later in early morning 2 of them started chirping. If it's not continuous thru out the day, is it likey it's dust to vacuum out. Or do batteries still need to get changed when they are supposed to be factory installed 10 year back ups?? Also when I walk over to one to see if it's that one, it's like it moves to the other one. And then when I walk to other one, it sounds like it moves back to other one. What would cause thatcause this is what th old ones did.
Pro tip: Make sure your new batteries are installed in the right direction and the posts are positioned correctly. Trust me, this is an oft overlooked troubleshooting step.
Yes ! The POSITIVE post (the smaller one) should be closest to the center of the detector, this is common on all detectors.
I will tell you what works. Take the battery out, hold the test button for 10 seconds, replace battery. My smoke detector was driving me nuts and I just did that and it worked. The chirping finally stopped
Ditto for me. Just replacing battery did not resolve chirping noise; but doing what you indicated took care of the "chirp, chirp"! (o:
Audrey Gonzales My smoke detector was giving chirps for a new battery dex=spite haaving just put an in-date alkaline baattery in (right way!) so, I took your advice of holding down the test button 10 seonds with the battery out/=. This however did not sstop the chirping but it was definite at a lower volume. I was now pretty desperate so I held the test button down for a count of 10 cats , with the battery in, resissting the impulse to lift my finger when the piercing started - took my finger off - and BINGO the chirping had stopped.
JOHN Rainbird oh yes and by the way, I would never have thought to try this but for you suggesstion so thanks.
typos dex=spite should be despite and I meant piercing bleeping
Audrey Gonzales THANK YOU X 1000000000000000000000
Audrey Gonzales I'll have to try this. My smoke detectors in my new house have been driving me fucking nuts for the past few mornings.
Thanks! Now I feel like I've heard the correct info from an expert. I'm going to watch your "how to clean a smoke detector" next.
I hope this guy in the video isn't on the fire dept I might call for an emergency. He probably won't help me unless I show him a new pack of batteries.
😂
How did you remove it from the ceiling?
This didn't even cover what's in the title of what to do if your smoke detector is still chirping after you replace the batteries...all it did was show you how to replace the battery and tell you to make sure to use a new battery.... what about how to reset it or what to do if it's still chirping after you put a brand new battery in it. waste of time
The smoke alarm in my house is not battery powered, but wire powered. The chirping persists. I am slowly being driven mad. I fear I cannot last another week without completely losing my mind. I fear for my sanity. I fear for my family and what I may do to them once finally break down. Please god, forgive me
I suggest we set the smoke alarms on fire
You'll know.
All hard wired smoke alarms have a battery powered source as back-up in case of a power outage. Smoke alarms will chirp at the end of their life. You would need to check the back of the smoke alarm to see when it was manufactured; if it is reaching 10 yrs then time to replace. New models now have sealed-in batteries that last for 10 years. If it is within 10 years, try using a can of compressed air to clean the vent, install a brand-new battery and press the reset button for a min of 20 seconds.
Any ideas on what to do if they're wired into the electrical system itself? It's been weeks and they're still ringing, albeit softly. I feel like my tinnitus is going to explode my head with the additional ringings.
Thank you to “tiny timies”. It finally stopped the chirping.
Love the high brow wine glasses.
Yeah- if all else fails- open a bottle of wine and drink the whole thing and then go back to bed. You won't hear the chirps any more!
I didnt drain the power from my hardwired smoke detector I just put in a new battery...actully went through 3, I just push and held reset and after 8hrs its would start to chirp again. Omg how many nights I forgot to reset before bed and 3 am...chirp or just as I drift off remember or worse "chirp" I'd reset it at night and it would go off just before my alarm or after🤣. I finally decided to look it up. So now I drained the power off, put in the new battery and pressed it, but no sound but it wasn't connected to the hardwire yet. I just plugged it into the hardwire and rest it there and it chirped. In 8hrs I'll have my answer. Ps. I lost my everything in a house fire 2yrs ago.
Hello, today I got the dreaded beep. I changed the battery and it still didn't stop beeping. So I changed it again (with another new battery) and it still beeped SO.....I just waited 3-4 minutes (it kept beeping) and FINALLY it stopped. So think it needs to reset itself but it takes a few minutes for the reset...during those minutes you just have to deal with the annoying beeps.
Getting rid of my chirping pet bird today. Had to ask Siri to find me a short video on how to get that darn battery out. It's the most stubborn smoke detector I ever seen!
Have done everything and want to pull wires off and can’t seem to be able to any help?
It's 11pm and I don't have Tim to get a battery, what else can I do to stop the chirping
It's like chinese water torture to your ears ... that creepy silence between chirps .... just waiting for the next one .....BEEP...........:(.............BEEP...............:(.............BEEP
They make smoke alarms that now have a 10 year sealed battery inside. 10 years without having to worry about the chirp. When you do hear the chirp, it will be because the alarm has reached the end of its life.

Great Fun Masti With Momin Mojumder Bangladesh scammer
I live in a apartment. It's wired to the building. It was chirping when I got home from work. I removed the battery. Pressed the test button for several seconds. Inserted fresh battery. Pressed the test button for several seconds. The silence lasted less than a min. It is driving me nucking futs! Having my wife bring home a brand name battery on her way home. The one in there is some name I have never heard of.
UPDATE: held in the test button for two beep cycles and it seems to be quiet now. Holy Hell that chirp is maddening.
If the chirping persists with a good battery, the detector needs to be replaced! That said, the replacement detector MUST match or be compatible with the other detectors in a linked system. If one detector going off sets the others off, it is linked system. Usually on the back of these linked detectors is a three(3) wire power plug - two wires power the unit and the other wire is to signal the other detectors.
SUGGESTION: If a battery doesn't resolve your issue, report it to the property management or landlord of your apartment. In virtually every State they are responsible for the fire alarm system and general maintenance.
Ok bueno el
Hold the button down for at least 15 seconds (Kidde 1276, at least), not "several seconds." Google your detectors model number and download the manual for it.
MAKE SURE THE BATTERY IS IN CORRECTLY, THE ALARM WILL STILL WORK WITH THE BATTERY IN THE WRONG WAY AND WILL CONTINUE TO CHIRP IF ITS IN THE WRONG WAY
Thank you so much--Never new that the smoke detectors only last for five (5) years.
I don't believe that.
I saw another video and it said 10 years so i am trying to find out the real no. of years they are good for.
They should last for decades, but manufacturers gotta make that money...
Replacing bad batteries...All 9v batteries have EXP dates on them, Make sure they are current. Second, MAKE SURE all batteries are loaded correctly into the alarm. When finished click battery compartment closed. It doesn't matter if your system is hard wired to house, batteries must be fresh and loaded correctly. Once completed correctly alarms will chirp once or twice more but then you will see steady green light.. I know its frustrating but this way will work. Good luck...Ron
Not one thing in this video covers what the title says.
I changed the battery twice and then dust it off. Smoke detector was just 4 months shy of 5 years. Smoke alarm still gave a loud beep. I ended up replacing it. So far no more beeps
The old battery shown , black 9 lives Eveready carbon-type ,wont replace a reputable alkaline ... doesnt last or stay quiet as long ...also ,w/ power removed from the detector , push the and hold 30 sec. ,the test switch ,to drain the memory of the previous low battery . Vacuuming the detection - chamber cage might help too , as dust is not good if inside the little detection cage . ( I m a 48 yr Fire/ Security Alarm Tech ) semi retired from Honeywell .
i replced new battery in the smoke detector for a recently built home. still chirps with message ;"low battery'. same message even after replacing battery
'I'm Gabriel Williams' . . . and Joey Papa, Coffee Consultant pops up. Ha. Video is about as helpful as the wrong name card. Here's his advice: If you've changed the battery and its still chirping. . . change the battery.
Smoke detector keeps chirping after replacing w/ new battery: I replaced the battery with a new one and it kept chirping for over a minute. Tried another new one, same problem. Most people say that it is an error code in the detector that keeps it from recognizing that you've replaced the battery and that you may have to remove hard wired detector and replacement how to do that, etc.... After reading about how to do this, I left to go turn off the circuit breaker for the smoke detectors. HOWEVER, I noticed that I hadn't heard it chirp in over a minute. Before turning off the circuit, I waited. It has officially stopped chirping. It may have a faulty error code or maybe it is outdated and should be replaced but as a temporary solution, my particular smoke detector just took longer to recognize a new battery. Try waiting a few minutes before going through the trouble of disconnecting, replacing, etc.
Hope this helps! If not, google it. Though he tried, this video was not very helpful.
“I’m Gabriel Williams”

Well which is it? Are you a coffee master or a fire master?
LOL I had to watch that a few times to make sure I was seeing it correctly. Maybe this guy leads a double life?

I tried to changed the battery on smoke alarm for a new battery "But it still beeps from the New battery and the old battery too "!! I am not sure what is goin on smoke alarm that will make it stop beepin at all
how toll brother building with high ceiling change smoker detector hot wair battery
need to be more precise on how that battery goes in the smoke detector like in my video I made check it out. To stop the chirpping or beeping smoke detector
I'm desperate for help. Two of my hard wired smoke detectors were chirping so I replaced the batteries. One went back to normal the other began chirping 8hrs later. So I looked up how to reset the unit everything seemed okay 8hrs later it chirped again. So I vacuumed out the unit, reset it, even replaced the battery again.....this time a day later chirping again. The alarm is only 4yrs old. Do I just need to replace the unit?
My girl gets me up at 3AM to go get batteries that DIDN'T stop the chirp and it's 4AM now and I'm watching this.......I now wanna punch a firefighter in the kidney 😒
Took down the alarm, threw out the battery. A few days later, buy a new battery- Eveready Super Heavy Duty (black). Open packet, insert battery without putting it down, alarm still chirps. Year to replace alarm: 2018. Yay! I will just leave this one I guess.
This is a good video. My neighbours are idiots, they let it chirp for weeks and lie to the property owners
We did all of that but we removed the batteries and we moved all the smoke decorator and their is no source but I won't stop beeping
I had to change the batteries several times before it stopped, and after each time it would immediately chirp right in my ear, im not proud but I jumped every time, that thing is loud.
Mine continued to chirp about three times after changing the battery, then it stopped.
So I've put in a brand new battery, done the test button and it's still chirping. However the alarm does work because my toast was burning and the alarm went off. But it won't stop chirping.
Still beeps after I put in new batteries and detector less than five yrs old so this is a useless video
Same here.
Didn't actually say what to do about the title situation.
Changing when you change your clocks is wasteful. Just change the battery when it beeps. It gives you a couple days at least of battery before it will die out. Change as soon as possible and you're good.
I put new batteries but it still beeped and it’s impossible to put them wrong into my smoke alarm. So I pressed the only button on the smoke alarm with “test” on it and it went away
I used a brand new battery and it still chirps. My smoke detectors are wired as well so changing them wont be that easy. Any advise on that?
Yes, it is easy. Figure out what detector you have and buy a new replacement detector that is compatible with your system... AND put in a new battery - problem solved.
Ok thank you. I can do that.
The key is to make sure in a system with multiple linked detectors the new one is compatible.
I have a 5BR, 3 bath, 3400sq ft house. There is a smoke detector in every room. I gotta fix that one because my son's room that it's chirping in, is on oxygen at night.
Yeah... you do. Wish you all the best. You are stuck getting a compatible detector otherwise you would have to replace a LOT of detectors. Usually the Kiddle and FireX stuff are interchangeable - either way you can look-up the manuals online as PDFs. Regardless, immediately, I would remove the chirping detector from the room and simply swap a different one (from somewhere else in the house) into your son's bedroom.
What make/model detector is it that is causing a problem?
I bought a brand new smoke detector (the exact one that he has in his hand), and put the brand new battery that came with the smoke detector into the battery compartment correctly, press the button once, and it still chirps. The smoke detector is brand new, and the battery is brand new, what am I doing wrong?
omg. same story for me RIGHT NOW , im going crazyyyyyy brand new battery , brand new smoke detector , BEEPS EVERY FUCKING MINUTES
What I found to be the problem is there was a fire. So first thing is make sure your house isn't burning to the ground.
I bet it takes this guy seven and a half minutes to order a drink at McDonald's.
Cliff notes for people that don't want to watch a two and a half hour long feature film about smoke detectors:
1) Try a different battery
2) If step one doesn't work buy a new detector
3) Change the batteries twice a year in all your detectors. Then light a cigar with a $100 bill. That last sentence was my idea. Sorry, I got little carried carried with the wasting money theme. And I've always wanted to do that. But I hate cigars and love $100 bills.
4) A smoke detector can and will save your life. Also, a smoke detector can and will save your life. Possibly. Against one very specific thing. You're still going to die. So a more honest statement would be "A smoke detector could possibly postpone your death, anywhere from a few seconds to 120 years"
5) Did I mention that a smoke detector can and will save your life?
And his name is wrong in the lower thirds at the beginning.
thank you, the detector was driving me nuts
Also. make sure it's a DURACELL, ETC. Not a cheap off brand.
What if my smoke detector and battery are new and it’s still chirping?
If all else fails go out and buy a new smoke detector? Great idea unless you have the kind that’s hardwired and the battery is just for back up when the power goes out. Then you have to buy a new one and then pay an electrician to install it.
those smoke detectors that say photoelectric are not very good to buy. I bought three of them and install new batteries but I still got chirping and beeping. I finally bought a different brand and didnt get any more problems. The photoelectric smoke detectors are not properly made.
