  • If you've followed my channel for a while, you know how much I love photographing wildlife in my DIY floating blind (floating hide). In this week's video, I'm going to answer some of the most frequently asked questions I get about using a floating blind and share some of the things I always consider when out in the blind. These are things I've learned through successes, failures and years of experience out in the blind.
    I made another video a while back talking about some of the more technical things to remember and consider when using a floating blind. If you haven't seen that video already, you can check it out here: • In my DIY Floating Bli...

    Another really informative video, as usual you also point out the safety concerns with this type of photography. You also made a point of the potential damage that you could have to you gear if not very careful and aware of your situation. Some great footage and images as well. Thanks for sharing and have a great week!

      Thanks a bunch, Keith! I felt that I needed to mention the risk to the camera gear that is involved because I've heard so real horror stories and have almost dumped my own gear in the water a couple of times. Without risk the rewards are sometimes minimal, but caution always pays off and can lessen the risk. I hope you're well this holiday season!

    I have built a couple now, the biggest issue i find here in Ireland is getting calm enough weather to use them. My second one is light enough for me to put it on the back of my kayak and paddle out to different spots to use it.

    • @JimmyBreitenstein
      @JimmyBreitenstein  6 місяців тому +1

      That's awesome! Yeah, weather is generally the biggest issue in my opinion. There are certain times of year that I don't even attempt to use it in certain locations because of the constant wind. Good luck out there!

    That is a wonderful set of images to accompany another excellent video. I have often pondered on the practicalities of building and using a floating blind. Your comments on depth were very appropriate and pointed out the narrow range of suitable conditions in which it would be safe and practical to use such a blind. Personally I have flexibility related issues (basically really dodgy joints 😂) which would place further limitations on how and where I could operate.
    Great to see a video which doesn't just extol the virtues of the subject but also points out the pitfalls.
    Best wishes, take care and good health to you

      @JimmyBreitenstein  6 місяців тому

      Thanks a bunch Robert. It definitely is a great method to photograph birds and other wildlife, if you have the ideal or close to ideal conditions to use one. I will say, if you're in shallower water and you have any joint problems, I probably wouldn't recommend it. I had some knee issues for a while in just one leg and it made it really difficult to use in more shallow locations.

    Great video, full of interesting advices that I didn't think before. I'd like to make it one, but in my area water spaces are not so deep, so I'm afraid I would stay on the water like swimming 😅

    Beautiful scenes and photos at the end especially the ducks with the synchronized diving! Now to decide whether I really want to go out in the cold and if I should try to find some wildlife or some more macrophotography.

    Could you tell us how you made your floating blind? Thanks.

    • @JimmyBreitenstein
      @JimmyBreitenstein  6 місяців тому +1

      I've mentioned it in a couple of other videos in my floating blind playlist. But essentially, it's rigid foam encased in plywood and covered in a waterproof sealant. I sewed the camo cover myself at home.

  • @caloconnor809
    @caloconnor809 7 місяців тому +1

    I am working on my own floating blind right now, yours has been good inspiration in my own design!
    May I ask, where did you purchase your camo covering? I am struggling to find something that is of good quality and a good fit.
    Thanks in advance!

    • @JimmyBreitenstein
      @JimmyBreitenstein  6 місяців тому

      That's awesome to hear, I hope it turns out well and you have a lot of fun using it! I sewed the cover myself as I couldn't find anything online that would work the way that I wanted it to.

    Just curious where did you get the ghillie blanket you put over your blind?

  • @johnnyat

    There was one scene where the blind was sitting near some ice. What do you do to keep your feet warm in cold water?

    • @JimmyBreitenstein
      @JimmyBreitenstein  6 місяців тому +1

      I wear pretty thick and warm socks. But after hours sitting in a frozen river you are going to get cold and it comes down to just sucking it up and putting a smile on your face in order to get the pictures 😁

    I'm thinking about making a blind for this upcoming spring/summer but I have a strong dislike/phobia of bugs and similar things. Nothing I can't deal with if I know what I'm getting into. Do you see many bugs/leeches/etc and do you have any tips for minimizing bites and things of that nature? Are the waders and long-sleeved shirts and jackets enough of a deterrant?

    • @JimmyBreitenstein
      @JimmyBreitenstein  6 місяців тому +1

      I'd definitely give it a try if you feel comfortable enough. I've never had an issue with leeches. I use chest waders and have never had leeches get in. I'll have the occasional spider hang out with me in the blind, but never really anything else.
