  • Have you ever taken a picture and had to pinch yourself afterwards to make sure it actually happened!? That happened to me recently and I can't wait to share the experience with you! In this week's video I'm back at it again photographing the Short Eared Owls and Sharp-tailed Grouse. This is an unlikely combination of animals, but a duo that I've found really work well photographing together in a trip as they live in the same habitat.
Spring is a wonderful time for Owl, Grouse and other bird photography. It's been so nice spending time with the amazing wildlife in the grasslands of the western United States this time of year, I hope you enjoy this adventure!
As always, I appreciate your constant support so very much. I hope you're well and wish you an amazing week full of wonderful wildlife encounters.
Come photograph Alaskan Brown Bears with me next summer. This is one of the most enchanting landscapes I've ever visited with some truly amazing wildlife. I hope you join me next summer, please let me know if you have any questions. www.jimmybreitenstein.com/pho...

Purple background short-eared owls really were the best! Background really matters so much, maybe too much:)

Thank you Ott! When I saw those purple flowers, the image immediately popped into my head that I wanted. I was so thrilled when it all came together. I couldn't agree with you more, the background can really take an image to the next level!

I don't think I could choose. I often feel your starting sentiments about the Short-Eared Owl about all of my wildlife experiences. You got some great flight shots!

It's a hard choice for sure 😁 The Owls gave me some really wonderful opportunities, I can't wait to get back out with them!

Amazing photos, owl of course are my fascination but the grouse are so beautiful with some of their feather colors. What a great location to find. Thank you for all your technical tips too for filming birds.

Another fine outing, Jimmy. Personally, I have a very soft spot for Sharpies. Have a great week.

Another great video. If I had to chose, I would probably pick the sharp tail grouse. I find their behavior this time of year fascinating for all species of grouse.

Thanks Richard! Yeah, the dance those Grouse do is so much fun to watch. You won't find a more energetic and charismatic bird out there!

Glad you explained the purple background on the short eared shot being flowers. They are only winter birds here so its usually the sandy brown of marshes or winter fields, unless I get some place with dark mountains in the background. I personally like the way you go about most of your videos these days, taking us along on the adventure giving a sense of place and some tidbits on the different species and your thinking behind your photography. Keep it up and hope you can make time to get back out to this spot.

Thanks a lot John, always appreciate your support. I spent so much time trying to get the Owls with that purple background, so I was thrilled when it actually happened!

Another super video Jimmy, great footage and some excellent images. Like you Owls are my favorite birds to photograph and Shorties are one of my favorites. The Shorties in our area are only around for around 3 months, they show up in late November or early December and are usually gone by mid February. They head back into the north country for nesting. The Grouse footage and images are also great but we don't have the leks like you do in our area. Thanks again for sharing and have a great week.

Thank you Keith! These Short Eared Owls were one of the first Owl species I ever photographed when getting into wildlife photography. For whatever reason I haven't gone out looking for them since, so it was very nice to get out with them again. That's a convenient time they migrate into your area as that can be a bit of a slower time for wildlife photographers in many areas.

This Spring I had the opportunity to photograph Great Horned owls and Short eared owls. The Short eared owls were fun to photograph. The horned would fly away while the short eared owls would fly to me. Caught some images of a harrier trying to take a vole from the short eared owl. One image shows a triangle shape with the owl up top and then harrier to the lower left (looking back like a villain) and the vole falling to the lower right. The harrier got the vole in the end. I only had a hand full of days with better lighting because of all the rainy days. When the seo's face is sunny on one side and shadowed on the other, it makes their pupils different sizes in images. I also like to photograph Great Gray owls but seo's are my favorite right now.

Wow, that sounds absolutely incredible! I often see the Harriers harassing the SEOs, but I have yet to get a decent image from those encounters. Sounds like you had a wonderful spring! Thanks so much for sharing, I always enjoy hearing what others are up to 😊

Hello Jimmy, had I been asked before these videos I would instantly have said the owls but now, having watched both videos in full, I find myself gravitating towards your grouse footage and stills. Still loved the SEO images but the grouse just edged it for me.
I hope you and yours are all well.
    Best wishes from Wales.
ps. That final vertical image of the owl was probably my favourite individual still image of your set.

Thanks so much, Robert! I think a lot of people don't understand my Grouse addiction, until they spend some time observing some themselves. They really are such neat birds! That last image was my personal favorite as well, things really came together nicely! 😁

I was waiting for this video!! ❤ Your stuff is so good. I've been trying to get some pictures of the mallards by my house lately but I haven't been having any luck, they spook too easily. Have you ever considered going out to photograph Barn Owls?

    • @JimmyBreitenstein
      @JimmyBreitenstein  3 місяці тому +1

Thanks so much, that makes me happy to hear! I hope you enjoyed the video 😊 Keep working on the mallards, you'll get them. Honestly, I really enjoy the challenging species, they help me try new things and figure out new ways to photograph wildlife. I've done a bit with Barn Owls, just need to make a video one of these days. Thanks for the recommendation!
