This song was officially released in Japan as a single but with no video. It was used in a Mitsubishi VHS TV commercial that Madonna appeared in dancing along to the song. Mitsubishi sponsored her WTG tour in Japan and she did a series of four commercials .
I don't think I knew this song in my younger days. What a fantastic song, great 80's dance beat and really uplifting and motivating lyrics. Thanks for reviewing, bringing it to my attention and your great reaction.
Hi ladies! The You Can Dance album was a special treat. It was a first of its kind remix album of an artist’s hits. The bonus was that it featured the new song, Spotlight, which was never officially a single. I was a DJ in the late ‘80s and this was a continuous record. There were no pauses between songs. They all blended together. I’m glad you reacted to this gem. ❤️
Although this song didn’t have a video, it was used in a Mitsubishi commercial. They were the sponsors of The Who’s That Girl Tour and as part of the deal she had to shoot 3 different ads for them 😊
I’m LOVING everything you guys are doing w MADONNA and her discography! Enjoy this ride and things are just about to start getting more exciting, brilliant, inspiring and epic.. Get ready to be inspired, thrilled and changed…. That’s the power of MADONNA! ❤ From 1989 and on is when things get ICONIC and MAJESTIC! ❤️
What a pleasant surprise you found this hidden gem from Madonna’s 80s dance hits. Among the dozens of UA-cam pop music reactors that covered Madonna, you are the first I’ve come across that covered this piece. She originally recorded this for her 1986 True Blue album but ultimately decided not to include it-such was the luxury of her prodigious hit output at that time! Earlier in ‘87 she used Spotlight in Mitsubishi VCR commercials she appeared on that aired in Japan as a way to promote the Japan leg of her Who’s That Girl tour. Her then recording company Sire Records/Warner Bros decided to release on 11/17/‘87 Madonna’s first remix album-You Can Dance-of 5 extended play of her then dance hits and added the unreleased Spotlight as a new song. Madonna’s early collaborators (John “Jellybean” Benitez, Stephen Bray and Shep Pettibone) worked on this album when remix technology was in its infancy. Spotlight was released as a single only in Japan on 4/25/‘88 with Where’s The Party as its B side. Great discovery and reaction from you!❤
Thank you so much! ❤️ Having too many amazing songs to choose from (for True Blue) was definitely a great problem to have. So glad we were finally able to hear this wonderful song. :)
I absolutely love this song and really wish it had a video, it may have been used in Japan for a product deal, not sure though. She has done a lot of advertisements in Japan, especially in the 80’s.
This song is truly classic Madonna. I actually work out to the whole “You can Dance” album that this is from. Such a shame it wasn’t released worldwide as a single. It would’ve done really well in the charts.
"You Can Dance" is a great little remix album. It's also the first of its kind. Both the full version and singles version EP are available on Spotify and Apple Music.
It's a cute song, it wasnt released as a single unfortunately but it was the only new song on her 1987 Remix Album. In a way, it's also a farewell to her early mid 80s Pure Pop sound, as from 1989 Like A Prayer things got more grown up, darker and sophisticated, still pop but just different.
The You can Dance album was all remixes of her previous hits, with one new song, Spotlight. I suppose she never intended to release this as a single, but it would’ve been a hit. I love this song. There are many songs that we’re not released as singles or videos. Vogue was just the B-side of Keep It Together! That’s her biggest hit! 🤷 Does this mean Like A Prayer is next? Can’t wait! Also…Emily looks so cute dancing in her chair. 😁
@@OurAnxiousReactionsMay I suggest you first react to her Make A wish Pepsi video commercial where she introduced Like A Prayer (LAP). This Pepsi commercial aired a day before Madonna released her groundbreaking LAP official music video that’d linked the 2 videos from the controversy that ensued.
You might be interested to learn, that this song was written by the same people who wrote Holiday. Madonna recorded this during the True Blue sessions, but passed on releasing it on the album. She felt the message and song seem too much like "Holiday" and decided to not include it. Eventually, it was included on YOU CAN DANCE remix album that came out the Holiday season of '87. Radio did play the song, but not enough for it to receive demand. Warners opted not to release it as a single in much of the world, except for Japan. I'm assuming Madonna was already over saturating the market as just a year before she released True Blue and month before this, the Who's That Girl soundtrack, movie and tour. By the time this was released for Christmas, they felt he name alone along with the remix classics would sell this during the Holidays. It did! It managed selling over 5 million copies.
This song reminds me when i was Young and i listened to the You can dance álbum while doing gym. Good song, good message but a bit long, i think is cause It was for a remix album. Maybe she wasn't much involved in that album cause she was doing theatre plays or other projects, that's why there's no video or live shows with thia song. Kisses 😘😘😘
It took me years to get the Japanese 3" CD and 7" Single of this one. And they cost me an arm and a leg lol Until the internet very few people even knew this had been a single release (in a special edited form) backed with a shorter version of the You Can Dance remix of Where's The Party. It's nearly always stated that Madonna never released any music during 1988, but Japan got The Look of Love in January and this one in April.

I ❤ Spotlight, fond Madonna childhood memories 1987.
Superb choice!
When I was a scared gay young teenager this song gave me life and hope. I will always be grateful for it, and Madonna in general.
Thank you so much for sharing that with us. ❤️ It truly is an incredibly inspirational song.
you can dance was an incredible album....
Spotlight should not be missing from so many tours, and should definitely be on the Celebration tour. It's inspirational and deserves more love.
I don't think I knew this song in my younger days. What a fantastic song, great 80's dance beat and really uplifting and motivating lyrics. Thanks for reviewing, bringing it to my attention and your great reaction.
Aww, thank you so much! ❤️❤️
And yes, this really is such a great song!

A true fan favorite. Definitely a hidden gem.
I wish it had the ability back in the day to be a single. One of our radio stations played it several times when the album came out
What a little gem of a song, it should have had a proper release and video. So catchy and so 80's. love it!
My favorite song from my favorite album,
Dan

Such a cute song - I think it’s an outtake from her first album then was reworked for true blue but never added
Cool song.

Thank you for that background info! ❤️ Incredible that it sold so many copies with no real promotion. Wow.
