Hey, here's Spotlight from my unplanned reaction to You Can Dance. I meant to just do Spotlight and then skip to Into The Groove for Patreon as this was not planned to be a long reaction, but it was just too good to skip! I didn't do the last three tracks, the "dub versions", as I ran out of time and they didn't seem as essential (just guessing - tell me if I'm wrong).
I don't pause at all during playing the album, but I do talk over songs when there's a quieter bit. This is less like a full reaction and analysis that I normally do, more like an album playback with a bit of talking during it, and a few minutes of talking at the end. Maybe one to put on in the background while you're doing something else? Anyway, enjoy!

Yes, Madonna admired and had ties to Sly and the Family Stone. She dedicated her song Keep It Together to them and during her Blonde Ambition tour she would interpolate Family Affair (by Sly and the Family Stone) with her Keep It Together performance.

I'm pretty sure when she sings "everybody is a star" that's a Sly & The Family Stone reference because during The Girlie Show Tour (1993) she would open her last number singing part of Sly & The Family Stone's "Everybody Is A Star" as an introduction to her song "Everybody". Such a great concert finale by the way where she introduces her band and her dancers and which also contains elements from another S&TFS's song "Dance to the Music" as well as Marvin Gaye's "After the Dance".

G'day it's Steven from Down Under again
One of my many favourites from the Queen of Pop, she's released so many great songs that weren't accompanied with music videos including this one.
If memory serves me correctly I believe I was around 17 years old when this album was released.
Anyway a typically catchy 80's tune, and with a positive message.
There is no limit to the brilliance and artistry of Madonna, and I thoroughly enjoy people discovering what so many people already know and that is that she is and will always be the greatest female pop artist in music history, a true pioneer.
All hail the Queen of Pop!

The song had a heavy rotation on radio. I remember it playing every 15 minutes on radio in NYC. Too bad there was no video for it, but Madonna was wrapping up her Who’s that girl tour and was getting ready for her next album and acting on Broadway in a play : ‘speed the plow’ also Madonna never performed it on Tour she should, it will drive her fan wild.

I’ve always liked this song. I was wondering why it wasn’t released as a single? Yes your right. It was inspired by Sly and Family Stone ‘Everybody Is a Star’ It was used in a commercial promoting VCR in Japan. It featured Madonna dancing around and I thought it would of been a hit if she had released it with a video. Very catchy beat and chorus and Madonna’s harmonies are always superb.

you can dance is an incredible album, still play it since i bought it in 1988! I work as a bartender at a club in in the 1980's and Spotlight got played every night! Drew the crowds..thank goodness i lived in this era, music isnt like this anymore

I'm praying she'll perform Physical Attraction on The Celebration Tour.
I want a redo of this album where there is no gap at all. The current version has a slight break due to it being a record (Side A and B). Also some songs be edited and, moreover, add Who's That Girl and Causing a Commotion remixes to the non-stop album. Just my dream....

its billed as a 'greatest hits' tour. that wasnt a single OR a hit. dont count on it. it always deserved a live performance though... one of the many gems she ignored on the road! and at this point, dont count on anything...

    *WOW!*
*never expected to hear a reaction to spotlight! ALWAYS loved this one! catchy as hell & the lyrics were meaningful enough to save this from just being a fluffy pop record. yes it has dated, but in the 80s? this was the sound! and the club remixes of it were great!*
*we used to pump this in my car on repeat! and even though it didnt get a proper single release in the US, (ANOTHER warner fail) it got heavy airplay in the NYC metro & other major markets... enough to land at #32 on Billboard's airplay chart.*
*the whole album... def a party record & a Madonna fan must have! i loved the mixes.. it pumped some new life into songs that frankly got played to death back then. the whole album concept was brilliant cuz 'remix albums' were not even a thing at the time. leave it to Madonna to blaze another new trail & influence the entire music industry!*
    *thanks for reacting!*

This is one of my absolute favorite Madonna songs. My love for her was peaking back then. I alternate between this and "Causing a Commotion" as my favorite Madonna song with "Commotion" edging this one out by a hair. I also realize that they sound similar. When "Born This Way" came out, while others were proclaiming comparisons to "Express Yourself," I thought, lyrically anyway, that this song was the very close sibling to the Gaga song.
Also, the version of "Over and Over" slaps!

in 1987 this was the best selling remix album ever. only surpassed as of now by Blood on the Dance Floor: HIStory in the Mix by jacko.. when released on cd it was the first continual play album ever. where all the songs continued without a pause. the vinyl, cd and cassette all contain different mixes and are all highly collective. spotlight was released in japan as a 3" cd single and in the us as a vinyl promo

Madonna loves sly and the family stone. It's in keep it together, not only the song, but the opening to keep it together on blond ambition, but also everybody in the girlie show. In fact, the emphasis on funk during the girlie showb is endemic throughout the entire concert, plus some james brown thrown in for good measure. Girlie show probably has her best live band ever.
    Great work, keep it up!.

This song and this album had such a profound effect on me. On the back of the album cover she wrote a note about DJs and dedicates the album to them. I mostly played the vinyl recording in my room alone, Before I could get to a club.
The first gay bar that I was brought to, by my high school friend's older sister was a Lesbian club named Kings and Queens, and I danced there and requested of my new friend, the DJ, Marilyn that she play a Madonna song as she knew I would and she played Causing a Commotion from the Who's that Girl soundtrack from that same summer which I danced alone to, for her, I guess. Believe it or not, I got picked up there by a hot guy and got a ride home with him.
My name is Dan, and on Everybody, Into the Groove and Where's the party the word Dance is shortened and becomes Dan.
Yeah, this was during the summer in a dark time of conservatism and homophobia and the full blown AIDS crisis in America, Madonna was and is a breath of fresh air and truth and honesty, bravery and courage.

Spotlight is absolutely stunning and underrated. I was gutted that it wasn’t released as a single in the UK. It got released in places like Japan and the Philippines. I really think it could’ve been top 3 in the UK. I still play the You can Dance album on my phone when I’m walking the dogs. The steps are perfect to walk to, especially on Into the Groove. yea but this was a hit. vulgar flopped.. #11 peak on the dance charts?! it was supposed to be her 51st #1! a big pride anthem! man the clubs will go crazy for it! well it didnt quite work out that way now did it?
same thing with Popular. debuted at #43 then stalling & immediately dropping on the Hot 100 while everyone was thinking that was the song of the summer when it 1st hit. streaming dropped off like a rock as well.
once again, Madonna is a part of projects that totally under performed. she hasnt even had a single club hit with all the projects shes popped up on in the last few years (although most of them were shit anyway). sadly at this point it seems this is going to be how she goes out.
      (& ps i love vulgar.)

@@FranklySpeaking. I still prefer Vulgar to this, and I also think your points are facts. Although I don't mind the flops. I hope Madonna also feel proud of her efforts even though they have not been commercially successful. I wasn't a fan of hers in the 80s, only after Erotica I realised how as an artist, she is versatile and adventurous and has substance in what she conveys through her artistic output. I adore that about her. The one thing I like about the song Spotlight is the line "... don't be afraid to fall.... " :-) also yes I agree that this is "how she goes out" but I hope she is okay with that and realised that she's done so much regardless of how she "goes out". And more importantly, she's affected, inspired, saved a lot of people. Me included.
