One day I woke up to the news that Freddie had passed away. Later that afternoon the local radio station was playing the top ten most voted for queen songs in a poll and this was number ten. I'd held my tears back until that point and it all just came flooding out, just as my best friend arrived at my door - eyes red and sore, after a day of grieving. One of the saddest days of my life and it still pains me now. But I took Freddie with me in my heart and this song became my own personal mantra. It's been a long time since then, with some crazy highs and lows, but I've been a rocket ship on my way to Mars and a sex machine ready to explode ever since. RIP Freddie - love you loads x x
Yeah, when Freddy died, I felt for him, he was an amazing soul. And normally I dont care about celebrity passings, Robin williams, Norm Macdonald, Freddy, those are the ones that actually FEEL like a LOSS to society.

As a bass player of almost 50 years standing, having played all kinds of music in live bands, I can only say that John Deacon's bass line are always spot on. He always plays the right thing at the right time. People may underestimate him but bass players don't. He was the cornerstone of Queen's live performances, with Roger.

Pardon my phrasing, but literally every single note and syllable in this song screams "fuck yeah let's go!". It's so recognizable, so singable, amazingly fun to sing in group as well, building onto each other's energy.
I've been to two funerals where this song was played, both people died of cancer. I think this song resonates with the terminally ill because it sends two messages - firstly, I'm going to make the most of the time I have left (so don't stop me) and, secondly, when I'm not here don't be sad because I wasn't when I died. I find it quite profound that such an upbeat song can be perfectly appropriate in the blackest of moments and it's why I feel the songs created by Queen are just as valid as the works of the greatest composers.
I've told my kids that this song must be played at my funeral. It tells about how you lived your life and it really resonates with me. Go out with a bang and on your terms. Also, live your life with gusto, don't just be a spectator!

Freddie's song is fantastic. Brian liked it but felt it was scary too because they were worrying about Freddie's hedonistic lifestyle. If people are listening carefully Freddie is signaling he is a Bisexual man, he wants to make men and women supersonic. I don't blame the band for worrying because of the new disease with no name as yet. But the song does reflect joy and freedom. Regarding intro and outro, it is really reflective of how life is, moments of pure joy and moments of calmness and reflection. Great reaction

Despite suffering a debilitating disease and in constant pain, the boy, who has a great sense of humour about it, finally dies and (as per his request) his mother plays this song at his funeral. That "singable" instruments feels like a signature Queen thing. Freddie is the band's vocals, but at the same time, many of the songs have solo bits where the instruments are practically "singing" the chorus during their solos.
This song is, if not Queens best song, sure top three in my opinion. You get that rush of adrenaline through you without the use of big sounds that is so usual in these days. This is a band playing together and on top of that Freddies singing. It doesn't get any better than this.

That was always Freddie's motto - if somethings worth doing its worth over doing! Maybe the start of the song is Freddie waking up in the morning/afternoon and thinking in bed what he is going to do with the day/night ahead and the end music is Freddie in bed at the end of the day/night before he goes to sleep reminiscing about what he actually did. The bulk of the song is obviously Freddie having it large while up and about.

Yes, its such a, empowering song if you were a gay person, looking at it through Freddy's eyes, about just commiting to being you, and being happy. Another song with a similar vibe is "Rocket Man" by Elton, that song always felt like he was using space as a metaphor for homosexualiy, and how it made him feel isolated from his wife and from the world and from everything. So deep when you realize thats what it meant.

They always put the cherry on top - well said! Usually they spread them with both hands. :) Regarding the guitar solo: you are spot on again. Brian told many times in iterviews that he regards the (solo)guitar as a second voice - it takes over for a time from the singer, progress the song, than hands the storytelling back to the human voice.
Absolutely spot on about the guitar solo. Brian May didn't write guitar solos - he wrote extensions to the vocal. Every solo he wrote is endlessly hummable. Then again, with Freddie as your singer, how could you not be inspired?!
This song further cemented my love of Queen's music. It has everything expected from a Queen song. It's all there. It's kind of autobiographical is regard to Freddie's relatively new-found freedom, in which he's thrown off the shackles of his former self and been given the opportunities that weren't open to him before. He's at a point where hedonism is all he really wants, or at least, to give the impression of it through his music. Like many introverted people, he had a facet of being care-free and disregarding of certain, shall we say, social etiquette norms and just wanted to take on the world. When, inside, he was a genuinely vulnerable yet caring individual who just wanted emotional security. Brian wasn't very keen on the messaging of this song as it indicated the rashness of being given everything at once and how it can so easily lead to destruction. He did warm to it, eventually, though. Sometimes, it's just best not to look too deep into the meaning of songs and just accept it for being nothing more than a happy, care-free anthem.

Amy, you really put a smile on my face when you stopped the song the first time to comment on it. You must have REALLY been in the “zone” because you were talking almost as fast and energetic as “Don’t Stop Me Now.” Interestingly, both Brian and Roger were against this song at the time (1978) because they felt it was a brazen and negative statement of Freddie’s hedonistic and sexual lifestyle. I don’t know about Roger, but Brian has changed his mind about the song due to its popularity. In fact, this song is one of the most played songs at wedding receptions 😉😉😉. This has always been the song I listen to when I’m getting ready to go out with friends or to a party. It just makes you feel excited and happy about life. It’s beautifully done by each member of Queen. One of Freddie’s genius songs as one can relate to feeling eager & unstoppable. ❤Thanks! I love your insights! It's hard not to feel good when this one comes on. 6:25 - I love that suspended chord right there. It's kind of a jazz/broadway kind of chord to put in a rock song, but as usual, that's no problem for Freddie. 9:00 - The "ooh ooh oohs" and "have a good time good time" stuff in the breakdown is very reminiscent of mid 1960's soul records. (Has the topic of breakdowns come up yet?) 11:40 - the way the energy of the buildup is carried by the guitar, but not in a flurry of notes, but in long, gliding notes. We're gliding fast, but we're not flapping our wings, so to speak. And of course, that tone just can't be beat. So rich and "chewy". 16:20 - That feels like a very "cinematic" ending to me. Riding off into the sunset or something.
When Jazz was released I was confused. Before I heard any songs I saw the album and thought that it might signal a shift in musical direction. News of the World was my real introduction to them, the first album that I really got into as a complete entity rather than just the songs I had heard on the radio like Killer Queen and Bohemian Rhapsody. So I had a solid idea of exactly what their music entailed, lots of different styles merged into a brilliant mass, and them suddenly limiting themselves to playing jazz was abhorrent. Not that I have anything against jazz music or jazz musicians. Then I heard Fat Bottomed Girls and all was right with the universe again.
Thank you for doing this series. 😉. To me as a man in his late 50s, I grew up with the music of Queen. I well remember my father disapproving of the "Rubbish" that was coming out of my tiny transistor radio in the 1970s. It is great to finally realise, that someone with classical training, can say that this music has some value!
This is my absolute favorite Queen song. Bohemian Rhapsody and others are great too, but this is so energetic and positive straight through. Not as a driving song, but it's the best one to listen to at the warmup party before you are all going out on the town. Also, it's great workout music when you have partied too much and need to get in shape.
And there are so many other things to consider: the performance is fantastic, the drumming and sound of drums is stellar, the solo is perfect for what the song needs ( and of course you know it is Brian ) all those little things that make the song that good.
(I'm not looking for sympathy, ok?) Might sound a little strange to some but ...A long time ago I lost my 18 year old daughter in a road accident. We played this at her funeral. it just worked. i still sing along, badly, but with gusto.

Congratulations on reaching the halfway point in the Queen series. You are right on the appropriateness of the title "Don't Stop Me Now". I agree, this was full of energy and vibrancy. Great comments on the short melodic guitar solo (sung from the guitar as you said). I loved what you said about Queen's attitude of embracing life and living it to its fullest, with an interesting question wondering when Freddie learned that he had aids. Wikipedia says, "He had exhibited HIV/AIDS symptoms as early as 1982 and was diagnosed with AIDS in 1987." Since this album was recorded in 1979, he wouldn't have started showing symptoms for another 3 years. Great song. Glad you enjoyed it so much.

12:04 Yes, they are definatrely singing guitar soloes, I get what you mean. I find some groups that have alot of vocal harmonic talent, can also apply that to their guitar work, I feel like its Freddy, singing through a guitar, but I dont know what he writes/contributes to the guitar solo sections, but it just hits me that the guitar is him singing, idk why. lol Fun fact, I sort of do the opposite, my songs even when complete, sort of feel like theres room, for a vocal melody its weird how the presence or absence of vocal talent in a composer, can have an affect on the melodies written for guitar as well.

You’re not wrong at all. This is one you have to be a bit careful with, or you will, at the very least, be getting a speeding ticket. It does give you that stop sign/red light moment, when it drops to drums and vocals, only to then lay down some rubber into the guitar solo. A song for the autobahn if ever there was one.
Yeah, I find it interesting, how Freddy tried to be coy about his sexuality in his music, and even after he came out and it was known he was a flaming homosexual, the songs did not lose truth or power, even tho we were reading them backwards the whole time before that. It sounds dumb, but Freddy was "as gay as it gets" with his costumes and performing and all his wild antics, but he somehow did it without making a bad name for himself, and continueing to be a legend, I wish all the LGBTQ peopel of this era, could be true to themselves, like Freddy, without indoctrinating others. Nowadays its "wrong to not be supportive of everything and all things gay" whereas I got the impression from Freddy, and Elton etc, that they were in the "Cool gay kids club" totally fine with being "not the norm", and not pushing for new recruits, not barring anyone from "joining" lol they knew what was cool, and what was legit. Brian May's guitar playing. I saw a guitarist analysing May's playing a while back on UA-cam. Sorry I don't remember who but that man said that he didn't get it until he realised that May doesn't play the guitar as a guitarist - he plays it as a melody. And that he does it time and again, picking up the melody from Freddy and keep it going on his guitar. I'm sorry that I can't explain it better, it is a while since I saw it and trying to tell it in English doesn't make it easier for me. But to me it sounded so right when you said that May's guitar sang (not your exact wording).
Songs like "Jealousy", and "Leaving Home ain't easy", from this album were put apart... great ones, by the way, felt a little disappointed. Their most beautiful and delicate music was from the seventies.

It was at least another eight or ten years before Fred was even diagnosed with HIV, his outlook on life was it's for living and some of this would come from his religion. When you get a chance I'd recommend watching Freddie Mercury The Untold Story with his mother and sister, Mary and others who grew up with and were in his life, and Days Of Our Lives documentary not too be confused with Roger Taylor song from 91, it'll give you a good idea of where his lust for life came from
In one of early listening and analysis, I stated in comments that Brain May guitar solo’s are unique signature of Queen songs, and there is reason why many guitarist can not understand his genius is if they look only the technique aspect of his solos. Then I told in comment that secret is in fact that main thing about him as great guitarist is actually not even in his unique signature tone, or technique; it is a fact that all his solos are singable, like their are pieces of music written for singer to sing, not guitar to play. You can actually sing his solos like you sing a song. Now I know that is many guitarist and musicians who think that, that is bolloks, and there’s many I found to completely agree whit this claim, so I am interested; since Amy started to hear Brian May solo as something that you wanna sing, in this song; so what is Amy opinion about singing solo debate among many guitarist, when is Brian May approach in question. I have heard this expressed before and agree with it. One reason I have heard given for this is the idea that Brian is not a guitarist at heart. He is a singer who just happens to play guitar. So his solos can be viewed as another background lyric.

Pardon my phrasing, but literally every single note and syllable in this song screams "fuck yeah let's go!". It's so recognizable, so singable, amazingly fun to sing in group as well, building onto each other's energy.
I've been to two funerals where this song was played, both people died of cancer. I think this song resonates with the terminally ill because it sends two messages - firstly, I'm going to make the most of the time I have left (so don't stop me) and, secondly, when I'm not here don't be sad because I wasn't when I died. I find it quite profound that such an upbeat song can be perfectly appropriate in the blackest of moments and it's why I feel the songs created by Queen are just as valid as the works of the greatest composers.
I've told my kids that this song must be played at my funeral. It tells about how you lived your life and it really resonates with me. Go out with a bang and on your terms. Also, live your life with gusto, don't just be a spectator!

Freddie's song is fantastic. Brian liked it but felt it was scary too because they were worrying about Freddie's hedonistic lifestyle. If people are listening carefully Freddie is signaling he is a Bisexual man, he wants to make men and women supersonic. I don't blame the band for worrying because of the new disease with no name as yet. But the song does reflect joy and freedom. Regarding intro and outro, it is really reflective of how life is, moments of pure joy and moments of calmness and reflection. Great reaction

That "singable" instruments feels like a signature Queen thing. Freddie is the band's vocals, but at the same time, many of the songs have solo bits where the instruments are practically "singing" the chorus during their solos.
This song is, if not Queens best song, sure top three in my opinion. You get that rush of adrenaline through you without the use of big sounds that is so usual in these days. This is a band playing together and on top of that Freddies singing. It doesn't get any better than this.

Maybe the start of the song is Freddie waking up in the morning/afternoon and thinking in bed what he is going to do with the day/night ahead and the end music is Freddie in bed at the end of the day/night before he goes to sleep reminiscing about what he actually did. The bulk of the song is obviously Freddie having it large while up and about.

Yes, its such a, empowering song if you were a gay person, looking at it through Freddy's eyes, about just commiting to being you, and being happy. Another song with a similar vibe is "Rocket Man" by Elton, that song always felt like he was using space as a metaphor for homosexualiy, and how it made him feel isolated from his wife and from the world and from everything. So deep when you realize thats what it meant.

Regarding the guitar solo: you are spot on again. Brian told many times in iterviews that he regards the (solo)guitar as a second voice - it takes over for a time from the singer, progress the song, than hands the storytelling back to the human voice.
Absolutely spot on about the guitar solo. Brian May didn't write guitar solos - he wrote extensions to the vocal. Every solo he wrote is endlessly hummable. Then again, with Freddie as your singer, how could you not be inspired?!
This song further cemented my love of Queen's music. It has everything expected from a Queen song. It's all there. It's kind of autobiographical is regard to Freddie's relatively new-found freedom, in which he's thrown off the shackles of his former self and been given the opportunities that weren't open to him before. He's at a point where hedonism is all he really wants, or at least, to give the impression of it through his music. Like many introverted people, he had a facet of being care-free and disregarding of certain, shall we say, social etiquette norms and just wanted to take on the world. When, inside, he was a genuinely vulnerable yet caring individual who just wanted emotional security. Brian wasn't very keen on the messaging of this song as it indicated the rashness of being given everything at once and how it can so easily lead to destruction. He did warm to it, eventually, though. Sometimes, it's just best not to look too deep into the meaning of songs and just accept it for being nothing more than a happy, care-free anthem.

I don’t know about Roger, but Brian has changed his mind about the song due to its popularity. In fact, this song is one of the most played songs at wedding receptions 😉😉😉. This has always been the song I listen to when I’m getting ready to go out with friends or to a party. It just makes you feel excited and happy about life. It's hard not to feel good when this one comes on.
6:25 - I love that suspended chord right there. It's kind of a jazz/broadway kind of chord to put in a rock song, but as usual, that's no problem for Freddie.
9:00 - The "ooh ooh oohs" and "have a good time good time" stuff in the breakdown is very reminiscent of mid 1960's soul records. (Has the topic of breakdowns come up yet?)
11:40 - the way the energy of the buildup is carried by the guitar, but not in a flurry of notes, but in long, gliding notes. We're gliding fast, but we're not flapping our wings, so to speak. And of course, that tone just can't be beat. So rich and "chewy".
16:20 - That feels like a very "cinematic" ending to me. Riding off into the sunset or something.

When Jazz was released I was confused. Before I heard any songs I saw the album and thought that it might signal a shift in musical direction. News of the World was my real introduction to them, the first album that I really got into as a complete entity rather than just the songs I had heard on the radio like Killer Queen and Bohemian Rhapsody. So I had a solid idea of exactly what their music entailed, lots of different styles merged into a brilliant mass, and them suddenly limiting themselves to playing jazz was abhorrent. Not that I have anything against jazz music or jazz musicians. Then I heard Fat Bottomed Girls and all was right with the universe again.
You have to get to the end of their catalogue to find any reference to Freddie’s illness.

I well remember my father disapproving of the "Rubbish" that was coming out of my tiny transistor radio in the 1970s. It is great to finally realise, that someone with classical training, can say that this music has some value!
This is my absolute favorite Queen song. Bohemian Rhapsody and others are great too, but this is so energetic and positive straight through.
Not as a driving song, but it's the best one to listen to at the warmup party before you are all going out on the town. Also, it's great workout music when you have partied too much and need to get in shape.

And there are so many other things to consider: the performance is fantastic, the drumming and sound of drums is stellar, the solo is perfect for what the song needs ( and of course you know it is Brian ) all those little things that make the song that good.

Great comments on the short melodic guitar solo (sung from the guitar as you said). I loved what you said about Queen's attitude of embracing life and living it to its fullest, with an interesting question wondering when Freddie learned that he had aids. Wikipedia says, "He had exhibited HIV/AIDS symptoms as early as 1982 and was diagnosed with AIDS in 1987." Since this album was recorded in 1979, he wouldn't have started showing symptoms for another 3 years. Great song. Glad you enjoyed it so much.

I find some groups that have alot of vocal harmonic talent, can also apply that to their guitar work, I feel like its Freddy, singing through a guitar, but I dont know what he writes/contributes to the guitar solo sections, but it just hits me that the guitar is him singing, idk why. lol Fun fact, I sort of do the opposite, my songs even when complete, sort of feel like theres room, for a vocal melody its weird how the presence or absence of vocal talent in a composer, can have an affect on the melodies written for guitar as well.

You’re not wrong at all. This is one you have to be a bit careful with, or you will, at the very least, be getting a speeding ticket. It does give you that stop sign/red light moment, when it drops to drums and vocals, only to then lay down some rubber into the guitar solo. A song for the autobahn if ever there was one.

Yeah, I find it interesting, how Freddy tried to be coy about his sexuality in his music, and even after he came out and it was known he was a flaming homosexual, the songs did not lose truth or power, even tho we were reading them backwards the whole time before that. It sounds dumb, but Freddy was "as gay as it gets" with his costumes and performing and all his wild antics, but he somehow did it without making a bad name for himself, and continueing to be a legend, I wish all the LGBTQ peopel of this era, could be true to themselves, like Freddy, without indoctrinating others. Nowadays its "wrong to not be supportive of everything and all things gay" whereas I got the impression from Freddy, and Elton etc, that they were in the "Cool gay kids club" totally fine with being "not the norm", and not pushing for new recruits, not barring anyone from "joining" lol they knew what was cool, and what was legit. Now we got all these P-diddys and Kaitlin Jenners, making "being Gay" some rediculous circus of judgement and acceptance, of grooming and wearing "woman-face", when it used to be more "wholesome", and "to each their own". idk my rant on how the "gay people" lost their way. lol

Brian May's guitar playing. I saw a guitarist analysing May's playing a while back on UA-cam. Sorry I don't remember who but that man said that he didn't get it until he realised that May doesn't play the guitar as a guitarist - he plays it as a melody. And that he does it time and again, picking up the melody from Freddy and keep it going on his guitar. I'm sorry that I can't explain it better, it is a while since I saw it and trying to tell it in English doesn't make it easier for me. But to me it sounded so right when you said that May's guitar sang (not your exact wording).
Songs like "Jealousy", and "Leaving Home ain't easy", from this album were put apart... great ones, by the way, felt a little disappointed. Their most beautiful and delicate music was from the seventies.

It was at least another eight or ten years before Fred was even diagnosed with HIV, his outlook on life was it's for living and some of this would come from his religion. When you get a chance I'd recommend watching Freddie Mercury The Untold Story with his mother and sister, Mary and others who grew up with and were in his life, and Days Of Our Lives documentary not too be confused with Roger Taylor song from 91, it'll give you a good idea of where his lust for life came from
In one of early listening and analysis, I stated in comments that Brain May guitar solo’s are unique signature of Queen songs, and there is reason why many guitarist can not understand his genius is if they look only the technique aspect of his solos. Then I told in comment that secret is in fact that main thing about him as great guitarist is actually not even in his unique signature tone, or technique; it is a fact that all his solos are singable, like their are pieces of music written for singer to sing, not guitar to play. You can actually sing his solos like you sing a song.
Now I know that is many guitarist and musicians who think that, that is bolloks, and there’s many I found to completely agree whit this claim, so I am interested; since Amy started to hear Brian May solo as something that you wanna sing, in this song; so what is Amy opinion about singing solo debate among many guitarist, when is Brian May approach in question.

I have heard this expressed before and agree with it. One reason I have heard given for this is the idea that Brian is not a guitarist at heart. He is a singer who just happens to play guitar. So his solos can be viewed as another background lyric.
