Funny story, I went on Wednesday to do a set of fork seals on a guys older Harley, but had ordered the wrong seals. So while hanging out shooting the bull, he asks me to look at his Super A. Which is stuck like glue. Not a bad looking worn out piece, but stuck.
He had put a combination of trans, marvel and a few other things in the cylinders and been trying to move it over the past year or so. Still stuck.
Going back over there once I get the correct fork seals for the bike. To be sure we can unstick it with a little more effort. This was his wifes fathers tractor with a ton of implements to go with it. So, it is more of an heirloom than a working piece.
Anyway, as usual thanks for all the free information and keep up the good work.

It is interesting to listen to you talk about oil weight, I did not personally witnessed this but my dad tells the story our farm. My grandfather bought it brand new in 1947 VAC case tractor. Supposedly when it came out of the factory they had 190 weight oil in the transmission. Supposedly in the winter that way oil would put on the gear so hard but he barely had enough brake to hold the tractor still until the transmission warmed up.

Yep, you need another building for that 1066. That A is going ahhhhhh. Thanks for the fresh lube. When I bought my H, it wasn't by any means like it ought to be. It still needs work, but you need to be able to take care of what you've got. That came out of a collection of around 70 or more tractors. Too many for them to care for. The Farmall land collection was well taken care of.

I’ve herd old timers say you can swap the drives. Put left on right, and right on left. If it is loud in forward gears. And quit in reverse. They all most never get that much wear in reverse. So swapping them will make it quit in forward. Have a good one buddy

I agree that heavier oil quiets the noise from 59+ years of wear. But,if you use tractor in winter, viscosity of oil should be lighter. Also, slip a 1/2" extension on that breaker bar and the fill/drain plugs are easier to access.I noticed the grease fitting behind strg whl seemed a little dry.

Damn I’ve changed gear lube in all of em and can’t remember for the life of me how much!... 85 W 140 wasn’t available back in the day! It’s fine to use! As long as the 85 is there! After they quit using mineral oil 80 W 90 was it

So....why do you prefer the low ash oil? I appreciate it was the recommendation back in the 40's and 50's when these tractors were built, but there weren't many options back then, certainly not the types of oil we have today. if IH updated its recommendations, do you think a newer oil would be a better choice? I may open the floodgate here, but what about a synthetic? Im starting to work on an old cub I picked up a year or so ago, just curious what you think.

No offense FFanatic draining transmissions, gearbox’s,and rear ends , drain before you start the water will separate from the oil and be the first to drain, and those drop boxes if your not sure remove pans and clean their usually full of sludge , it’s time consuming. I would never recommend using hytran inplace of 80/90 gear lube .
