  • Silent film from the archives of Rick Broome Studios, Division of Rick Broome Productions. www.rickbroome... Brief, but VERY RARE footage of a BEAUTIFUL UAL Caravelle seen here during crew training at Pueblo, Colorado. This footage was shot by Rick on June 14, 1961, just one month exactly before the Caravelle entered service with United. Continental Viscount, Central DC-3 & United DC-8 included! I’m guessing that all of the UAL action at Pueblo Airport was for flight training, since DENTK (the training center) was just getting started in the early 60s and they used to do a lot more training in actual aircraft than in simulators at that time. My Dad worked at DENTK between 1963 and his retirement in the 90s, and they used to give pilots a lot more hands-on aircraft training when the simulators were still pretty crude. I fondly remember an unmarked DC-8 that United used for training; it was nicknamed “Moby Dick” (the great white whale), and you could see it most days in Denver shooting one landing after another. They also flew to Pueblo fairly often; my Dad recalled a time that he was onboard Moby Dick and they spent the day making approaches and then circling around. Fond memories! BTW, the triangular windows of the Sud Aviation Caravelle were another oddity of this aircraft!

That all white DC-8 was a series 31 that was bought from Braniff after they merged Pan American-Grace into their system in 1967, the -31 airplanes being replaced by new DC-8-62 airplanes on the South America routes.

In 2019, Airbus, the successor of Sud Aviation, Nord Aviation, Aérospatiale, Matra Haute Technologie, Deutsche Aerospace AG (DASA) and Construcciones Aeronáuticas S.A. (CASA), celebrates its 50th Anniversary.

I love the Caravelle! One of the few jets that I have not flown.

That is the first jet I flew on. Pittsburgh to New York in 1963. I was 12 years old and will never forget it.

I do not understand why people did not video in 2160p back in 1961. Ha... Ha... Ha! Thank-you so very much Christian for posting another bit of history from the golden age. Hopefully, someone will view the video who has actually flown on the Caravelle. For some reason I have it in my head that the Caravelle served as a mid point between the smaller narrow bodied aircraft, such as the DC-9 and the really solid feeling 707, DC-8, etc. It seemed that although it did not have the passenger capacity, it still felt like one was flying on a really well constructed, heavy aircraft. I just hope one of the viewers who experienced the Caravelle could confirm or deny my instinct about it.

I flew the Caravelle in India once in 1971 from Madras to Bombay. It was a wonderful flight but I do recall it being quite noisy however. I loved the distinctive triangular windows.

Rare indeed, I had forgotten that UA had ever even operated the Caravelle. Thanks!

I really appreciate the video taking me back in time. But I so wish there was audio attached to the video because that Caravelle was super super loud. Fortunately I had the opportunity to fly many United Caravelles back in the day.

Great transition era airplanes. The caravelle was extremely noisy.

Another one over the fence, Chris. Great job! Thanks for posting.
Deb & I saw N1001U last year ramped on the desert at the Pima Air & Space Museum. She was incredulous when told that this jet was one from UAL’s Executive Service; Women were prohibited (other than stews). No kids, too. Warm brandy & decent cigars! She stated that I made it all up! I’m trying to imagine what the aroma was like when you stepped aboard an ES Caravelle that had endured tens of thousands of toasted stogies.

Vektorer ... no Vek ... you did NOT make it up. I well remember United’s “Executive” flights ORD/LGA/ORD. Their timetable explicitly stated “men only”. All First Class seating. Full meal service. Yes, stewardesses actually lit the guys cigars/cigarettes. I only flew them twice ... couldn’t take the stench of the cigars.
