My grandfather designed streetcars for the Chicago Surface Lines from the 1920's until he retired in the 1950's. Before he left he designed the round CTA logo.
I was born in '49 so I never got to ride any of the old red trolleys, but I still remember being a mini-kid and my Dad hustling me through the back door of a Green Hornet streetcar. I was, maybe, 4 or 5 years old as I recall not being any taller than the back of a seat. We lived on the north Side and I used to ride the Irving Park trolley buses to the Ravenswood L station when I went to the U of I '67 to '71. Interesting to me that I remember that the old trolley tracks were never removed when streetcars ended, just paved over, and I remember the rails were exposed some places, like on Lincoln Avenue where the Ravenswood crossed over. Then I read on another forum (Forgotten Chicago, maybe?) that the reason why is that the rails provided an earthing ground for electrical current in the transit system and that, if removed, the grounding would transfer to the water distribution system and that would have caused the metal water mains to oxidize and corrode over time. I've lived in Florida now for 39 years but I still miss Chicago, though I miss it for what it was, not what it is now. You can take the boy out of Chicago but you can't take Chicago out of the boy. That first shot of the trolley going over the train tracks is 111th St in Morgan Park. My Great Grandma and Grandma and Grandpa live there. My Grandma took me to that Kaden's store many times and the little shops along the way there. This was during the early 1950's..
Yes, I noticed that too. Those were the "Rock Island" tracks at the train station. I went to Clissold and Morgan Park H.S. in the 60's. The street scenes near the end of the video show 111th Street near Longwood toward the Rock Island suburban line at the base of the hill. I had wondered how these trolleys ever got up that steep incline! They moved quite slowly! Who knows how it was done with ice and snow and a load of passengers. The flagging is taking place at 111th and Hale. Other scenes show a southbound trolley on Vincennes near 94th Street. The end of the line shot is at 111th Street and Mt. Olivet Cemetery near California Ave. It makes sense that this is a terminus since cemeteries were such destinations back then. So great to see these views!!

This was a great video, thank you. I remember during the 50s the CTA converted to the "trolleybus" on many streets. The big problem was that without the rails, the trolleybus could be steered off the power line. Many times the driver would lose the power and the bus would stop. He'd have to get out of the bus and reattach the cable arm to the cable. I guess this became a big problem. Thanks again.
Yeah we really do! Chicago has some of the most congested expressway in the nation! Because everyone wants their own personal ride. We need a diverse system of modes of transport. The more variety on the streets the less traffic we have. 44 ppl in surface cart is at least 20 cars outta the way of ppl who want to drive. That’s assuming at least half of the riders own cars.
Great footage! I've had the pleasure of taking the last great Interurban Rail line left (NICTD, aka South Shore) through most of my life; part of the family hails from NW Indiana.
I still remember when South Shore trains came all the way into downtown South Bend. Alas, I'm too young to remember streetcars in Chicago - I was born in '56.

Great stuff....I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago. I barely remember the old electric buses on Belmont Avenue that ended at Thatcher/Cumberland, and [I think] ran until late 1969, so seeing all this history is fascinating to me. I rode the South Shore Line into South Bend in 1984 once, and "The Skokie Swift," twice. Man! If only we still had these!!! Also saw a documentary on Los Angeles' Red Car trains, as well. Sad to see that they all went away with the advent of the car-craze days of the 1950s. We even have some tracks exposed of the old trolley car lines here in San Diego. I see them every once in a great while....
Sometimes kids (but not me of course) would play a prank on the bus driver of one of those. When the bus was pulled over to the curb, the dual trolley polls were reaching over quite a bit to make contact with the wires. Each pole had a rope into a spring wound mechanism at the back of the bus. You could pull on the ropes and pull the polls off the wires. The bus driver had to get them back onto the wires. But with the bus to the side, this was VERY difficult. It was almost like one of those "Beat the Clock" TV show gags where you couldn't just easily pull them over. At that angle, when you pulled them over enough, they wouldn't be high enough. So the guy had to pull them over far past the wire and then let go hoping that as they raised they would land on the wire. Most of the time he would miss. After many, many tries, the guy would finally get lucky and get the poles back onto the wires.
I enjoyed watching this video. The set where the Sears Store, @ Winchester & Lawrence, was especially close, went to school at McPherson, right across the street. Went into Sears many times, it's now occupied by DeVry Tech, since Sears is gone. Good production, greatly appreciated. Amazing that I moved into the neighborhood in 1949, and now 2022, still live here. Much has changed, but much is still. here, and good. From a 4 year old boy to a 77 year old Grandpa of 6-------TIME FLIES!

When I was a kid, you could drive down Western Ave. on the south side, and if the asphalt was chipped up, you could see the old roadway with the rails still there. Big Oil lobbied the big cities to switch to buses and here we are.
There are still a number of places in larger cities where the rails peek through the asphalt. I like seeing that. It's truly history "resurfacing". 😀 - DeAnn

Thanks for the info, it makes sense, besides it doesn't look like a part of the city that underwent much urban renewal, judging by the style of the houses and other buildings. A similar situation existed in Worcester, Massachusetts, ("Worcester Street Rwy.") which had both streetcars and buses. The streetcars disappeared sometime right after WW2, I was told. I recall seeing evidence of the tracks when some of the street pavement lifted. I wasn't born until 1952, so it is only buses that I remember.

The streetcar which ran on Commercial Avenue between 92nd Street and 104th Street was #27 South Deering. Its northern terminal was at 63rd Street and Dorchester Avenue while the southern terminal was at 112th Street and Torrence Avenue. It last ran on April 24, 1948.
Most people don't realize this but Chicago had the first subway in the US. They didn't last very long though, but the first one was opened in 1869 for trolleys
And I remember paying 10 cents and taking the Western Ave Green Hornet north to River View plus getting a free transfer that we used for an all-day ride around the city, well until the time ran out. Fun no longer, no mo.

Be sure to go to the "IRM" The Illinois Rail Museum located in Union IL. We have a couple of operating trollies. There is a "Red Rocket Brill" and a Green Hornet PCC that will take you around the grounds along with operating Steam / Diesel Engines/ two old El Cars from the '30s and '40s. And much more to see. Go to IRM.ORG for more information.
@@Railfandepot If you take the time, be sure to ask what's running on their mainline track as the engines and cars vary. The streetcars run on a track around the engine sheds and you can get off and on anywhere so you can get close to the various sheds without a lot of walking. and be able to walk through the passenger cars. Plenty of info online. Bring your own food or eat at their '30's style stainless steel diner, hotdogs, hamburgers, and drinks inside or outside. Reasonable prices. yea, I DO PUSH, but it's all for a good cause, and well priced. The flu has put a crimp in cash flow and open to public days of late.
There is a MASSIVE amount of equipment at IRM. And certainly a fantastic collection of streetcar and interurban equipment, much of it nicely restored and much of it operating. But steam and diesel, too. And even busses. This is likely the best railroad museum to visit in the country.
If memory serves, I have saw this street car in San Francisco heritage streetcar fleet (F line). Am I right? And this remind me of the electric passenger rail service between San Francisco and Sacramento, running through the lower deck of Bay Bridge. Do you have footage about that?
We have some footage of old SF, we'll see what it looks like! :-) As for the trolley car, it might indeed be the same. Many designs were shared, most notably the PCC car design.
@@Railfandepot Just had a little search, they do have Chicago PCC street car in their fleet, but it's quite different from your video. Probably the one in SF is newer ones? @@pqhkr2002 Yes, there were various models of the PCC car - it was the most successful of the street transit cars. PCC stands for the (Electric Railway) Presidents' Conference Committee. One of the few great things to come out of a committee? :-)
I am not sure if the trolleys ran through Oak Park. I know it is not the same, but this documentary shows the trolleys through Forrest Park so I would assume Oak Park too..
Yes they did. They were of the "Chicago and West Towns Railway" and one line went down Madison through Oak Park out to 19th Street in Maywood. Another went down Lake Street in Oak Park out to 25th Street in Melrose Park. Another went through Oak Park on Chicago Avenue to Harlem (western border of Oak Park) and then down Harlem, then over to Forest Park and down DesPlaines Ave., then back through Oak Park on Roosevelt Road, the southern border of Oak Park, into Chicago to Laramie and then south to Berwyn and Cicero - sort of a big "S" shaped route. All were converted to bus operation in the 1940's.

I found another video on here that said those ran until 1973, so I stand corrected.

The streetcar which ran on Commercial Avenue between 92nd Street and 104th Street was #27 South Deering. Its northern terminal was at 63rd Street and Dorchester Avenue while the southern terminal was at 112th Street and Torrence Avenue. It last ran on April 24, 1948.

Most people don't realize this but Chicago had the first subway in the US. They didn't last very long though, but the first one was opened in 1869 for trolleys

And I remember paying 10 cents and taking the Western Ave Green Hornet north to River View plus getting a free transfer that we used for an all-day ride around the city, well until the time ran out. Fun no longer, no mo.

The Chicago Surface Lines (which came out of many smaller systems) eventually became the CTA bus lines.
Railfan Depot so they probably took over most of the routes and lines

Be sure to go to the "IRM" The Illinois Rail Museum located in Union IL. We have a couple of operating trollies. There is a "Red Rocket Brill" and a Green Hornet PCC that will take you around the grounds along with operating Steam / Diesel Engines/ two old El Cars from the '30s and '40s. And much more to see.

@@Railfandepot If you take the time, be sure to ask what's running on their mainline track as the engines and cars vary.
The streetcars run on a track around the engine sheds and you can get off and on anywhere so you can get close to the various sheds without a lot of walking. and be able to walk through the passenger cars.

Bring your own food or eat at their '30's style stainless steel diner, hotdogs, hamburgers, and drinks inside or outside. Reasonable prices. yea, I DO PUSH, but it's all for a good cause, and well priced.
The flu has put a crimp in cash flow and open to public days of late.
There is a MASSIVE amount of equipment at IRM. And certainly a fantastic collection of streetcar and interurban equipment, much of it nicely restored and much of it operating. But steam and diesel, too. And even busses. This is likely the best railroad museum to visit in the country.
Does anyone know the name of those Narrow streets? I think Irving Park Rd is shown a couple of times
If memory serves, I have saw this street car in San Francisco heritage streetcar fleet (F line). Am I right?
And this remind me of the electric passenger rail service between San Francisco and Sacramento, running through the lower deck of Bay Bridge.

We have some footage of old SF, we'll see what it looks like! :-) As for the trolley car, it might indeed be the same. Many designs were shared, most notably the PCC car design.
@@Railfandepot Just had a little search, they do have Chicago PCC street car in their fleet, but it's quite different from your video. Probably the one in SF is newer ones? And yeah, looks like their big collection is actually only 2 models, just different paint jobs.

About old SF, I was shocked when first see the aerial photography of 1930s SF in Google Earth, there was a big railroad net along the coast, and there was a big train yard at Bayshore.
@@pqhkr2002 Yes, there were various models of the PCC car - it was the most successful of the street transit cars. PCC stands for the (Electric Railway) Presidents' Conference Committee. One of the few great things to come out of a committee? :-)

Did the trolls ever go threw oak park on the west side
I am not sure if the trolleys ran through Oak Park. I know it is not the same, but this documentary shows the trolleys through Forrest Park so I would assume Oak Park too..
Yes they did. They were of the "Chicago and West Towns Railway" and one line went down Madison through Oak Park out to 19th Street in Maywood. Another went down Lake Street in Oak Park out to 25th Street in Melrose Park. Another went through Oak Park on Chicago Avenue to Harlem (western border of Oak Park) and then down Harlem, then over to Forest Park and down DesPlaines Ave., then back through Oak Park on Roosevelt Road, the southern border of Oak Park, into Chicago to Laramie and then south to Berwyn and Cicero - sort of a big "S" shaped route. All were converted to bus operation in the 1940's.
