At the time this was filmed, my parents were young and living in the city. They were married in 1949. After the war a lot of houses started being built in the suburbs and my parents bought one in 1958 but before then, we lived on Marmora Avenue. I remember seeing these cars in my baby pictures. The electric buses were still running and my mom and aunt knew the numbers of every street. (Chicago streets are mostly a grid with some diagonal streets that used to be Native American trails.) Thanks for letting me live in their time for just a while.
Note at 5:50 in the distance a single, rapid transit car (by the ARMOUR sign) on the old stock yards, Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) line. This route was discontinued in October 1957. Thanks for sharing this indeed early 1950s footage of Chicago!
Chicago is noted for some of the earliest skyscrapers, which look much better than contemporary "internationalist style" versions. It's great seeing these buildings in period with clear footage. THX, NASS.

Chicago was a very musical place at the time. My parents lived there from the mid-1950's(my father arrived in 1954, mother at the end of 1958). They were big jazz and music fans. Chicago had literally blocks and blocks of Jazz Clubs and it was the fashion to go out and go from club to club, meet friends and see the biggest names in Jazz. Jazz music was at its commercial height during that era. Rock music was just beginning and Folk music was also very big at the time. It was truly a wonderful, unique and unparalleled era that will never be again.

We used to put on our very best clothes to go downtown state street in Chicago , and look at the holiday scenery displays at , Carson Peire Scott , Sears , Marshall Fields , Goldblatts , Montgomery Wards , they're all gone now , State street these days is just an empty canyon ,

I'll say this as someone who has traveled all over the world, and as someone who was born, raised, and continue to live on The North Side. Chicago is the HEART OF AMERICA! Save Chicago, save America. It is an incredibly beautiful city that has been hurt by people with LOW CHARACTER. It represents everything amazing about our country. It is also the only major American city that is American. New York was settled by the Dutch. Los Angeles was settled by the Spanish.

My dad's claim to fame was being part of the construction crew which helped build both the Prudential building (1951--'55)--- considered Chicago's first skyscraper, and, in part, the Congress / Eisenhower Expressway. We lived in the Little Italy neighborhood.
In the 1950's and early 1960's the Prudential building was the place you took your date to impress her. So... MANY thanks to your dad. Now, unfortunately, it stands a dwarf among the giants that were build after it.
My earthly hometown is always a very family oriented place. Yes, there are dangerous parts of Chicago, but not the whole. Living here my whole life, it's 30%, I'd say. 😊 😊

What's up with the Southern California footage of the VA Campus from 5:01-5;37? Pretty sure there were no palm trees and mountains (5;12 in background) in Chi-town.
So where is 5:03-5:38? Chicago doesn't have Eucalyptus Trees, Queen Palms, or Canary Island Date Palms. I also noticed Bottlebrush, orchids, tropical hibiscus, and Fatsia Japonica growing outside. Some of these would require at least a USDA growth zone of 9B to 10A to survive. Did some Southern California footage get snuck in?

Some of those buses (like on Michigan Avenue) were Chicago Motor Coach, which had their own paint scheme. They were absorbed into the CTA in 1952.
