As someone who has been depressed and suicidal pretty much my entire life this movie is a very good portrayal of such a mindset. Very sad but beautiful movie.
I want to do but i cant function working with binging. Ive been sober over almost a year but for the wrong reasons. Whats stopping me is money only. I can't afford to not work and pay rent for a year or however long it would take. Even with the cheapness of baystreet

@David-rq1xj The time frame is what is off. In reality for a lot of people it seems to be a much slower death over years resulting in their body ceasing to function or absorb alcohol. Unfortunately for them they die sober which would be horrible. I plan on doing this but my fear is running out of money for alcohol.
It's because after years of bottles of spirits everyday, he's already had the warning off his Doctor to stop drinking or he would die within a few weeks and they are often right. He knew he was probably going to die in Vegas, in the film i think it's implied he's already cirrhosis, and/or heading for organ failure. I've known people who ignored the Doctor's warning and then died shortly after , literally weeks, because they kept on drinking. If he'd been lucky though, he might have lasted Months or ever years longer. @David-rq1xj
Hey man, there are a lot of us who struggle every day through our own depression and self medicating through it all. You aren't ranting. You're just being real. I hope you can find that will to recover, but I know it's a hard road.
I remember when I watched this movie as a teenager or in my early 20s, the idea of a guy drinking himself to death in Vegas seemed almost romantic to me. It seemed like a cool, bad-ass way to go out. And I wanted to get drunk after the movie, in some cheap bar, with jazz music in the back. Now I'm older and there is no romance in this anymore for me. Not because I'm an alcoholic, I don't have a drinking problem, never had one. But as I age, I realize better how hard life can get and that if an adult man in his 30s or 40s decided to die like this, there is nothing bad-ass, or cool about it. It's just sad and desperate.

God, that scene where he is shaking with the bottle of vodka and OJ from the fridge hits REALLY hard. I remember shaking hands when I would pour cheap whiskey in a cup
What can i say, watched this movie again recently and it really hit hard. I've fantasized about the idea many times of drinking for the rest of my life (not necessarily to die), how i would afford it, should i give sober life another chance etc. At some point alcohol became the only thing i had to look forward to. And coming back to reality where my girlfriend left me, i make crap money and no idea how to make a decent living, never had much friends or social life, and lacking in common skills that normal people have; is almost too painful. There's nothing but endless boredom and not measuring up to look forward to. And that's why this movie is so real.
You have to want to change. It will need to be a priority in your life. I recommend 12 step programs like AA to deal with your drinking. I would suspect you came from a dysfunctional home so look into l anon and and ACA. We usually have to get very bad before we are truly motivated to change. It took me until I was 40 and the pain of major depression forced me to change. It was the worst and best thing that ever happened to me because as bad as it was it's the only thing that made me take any action. Somebody gave me the same advice I'm giving you and I'm forever grateful. I wish you the best of luck. Help is out there but we need to ask for it. We usually don't change just by ourselves, we need help.

Change is hard and I'm still working on changing some major aspects of my personality but I'm grateful to still be around to work on me. Without recovery I don't know if that would be the case. Like they say in AA stopping drinking is the easy part. It's what comes after that is the hard part. I wish you the best. Look up Dr Gabor Mate's take on addiction. It's really good and explains a lot of why people are addicts.

Girls treat me like crap I gave myself 2 more years for finding the thing that cold bring me some happiness. After that... Don't even know what i would do.

Yeah, I'm right there with you. Going to the grocery store and buying 5 handles of vodka and mixers every few days. Waking up at 3am everyday in a pool of sweat and I can't even use my phone because my hands are shaking so bad. I tried stopping so many times, but sobriety is worse, boring, depressing and irritating. Life's a bitch!
And driving like it's no big deal. That too is a sign of a serious problem, being drunk all day and feeling normal so you drive. Hate to admit it, but that's me. Only way I can stop my hands from shaking and being irritable all day. Oh, and I stopped wasting time with mixers years ago, just straight vodka does the trick. Life's a bitch!

this movie helped me a lot come through a tough time...i was also alcohol addicted and together with a prostitute... i saw the first part of the movie round about 500 times every night when she was working. the second half probably just a few times. fortunately now i live a normal "boring" life with a woman and a child. but sometimes i watch back to this hard time of my life with a laughing and a crying eye.
@@sjpatrik2 i want to correct something in my written text. its like a miracle but fortunately in all these years i never got physical addiction it was just a mental thing. so iam still drinking more than the "average" person, especially now (long story) but its still everything in a "green area" sometimes i drink every 2 days sometimes not even once in a week it depends. yesterday i drank much but now you can chase me with alcohol for the next 3-5 days. its not like i wake up and have the need to drink its more the opposite. so i think iam still doing well after many years of drinking.

I’m sober 3 years now. This was my life before. I can’t believe I was able to quit. I love waking up sober, remembering the night before, and no more embarrassing shaking hands. I hope all you who are still suffering find help.
I suffer from major depression and abandonment issues. My mind was dead set on suicide. I have taken therapy to numb my manic issues. I don't know how long it will last due to my PTSD flashbacks coming back. I can't even do something simple as eating without pausing for a flashback of a particular person to back. Everytime I feel horrible like that I watch clips of this movie. It sounds strange but watching characters or real people in the same pain as I went through, and still go through from time to time, is kind of comforting. Lonely and depressed people make me feel less lonely.aybe because they are so relatable. This movie is profound in a strange way.

i quit drinking alcohol totally six years ago (never been an alcoholic by the way). Watching Nick Cage drinking vodka like that causes me nausea and the need to drink water
Alcoholism is tricky. There is social acceptance, people who will think you are strange if you don’t drink. This is what it is, ok. You might not be on the extreme level of Benjamin here, but when you start to feel unhappy about your alcohol use, it’s time to get help. Especially, and it’s probably happening, when it starts to fuck things up in your life. You can be totally functioning at your job, but usually the dead give away is when you are neglecting your social relationships, or even worse, neglect spending time with your kids or messing up your relationship with your significant other, who by the way will be the first to recognize it, as much as you’ll hate her for being a drag. Be quick about it, cause if you don’t take it serious, you will lose her first, then you will stop spending spending time with your kids if you have any, and eventually it will spiral out of control and you will one way or the other risk your job in more then one ways, making it mathematically just a matter of time before you lose that too. And from there on out, it is really downhill. Drinking, as much as it Is romanticized in society, and some people can handle it, but if you cant, and you will know it deep down if you cant, can turn a innocent habit, into something very dark and destructive. This movie btw, is a timeless masterpiece, very close to the heart, with a very fitting soundtrack equally close to the heart.
In some occasions booze is great aide, but you never want it to be hosting things. When somebody says they "can stop whenever they want" it means they do not want to stop drinking. Ever. This is very good movie. It has tragedy, but also human dignity in it as Ben is specifically drinking himself to death. It is a wake he participates himself.
The problem is reaching the point where sobriety is just too painful, that's when you're in trouble. I'd rather be loaded than sober and irritable, hanging out with boring people doing boring things. Life's a bitch

The way society romanticizes alcohol and drinking makes it so difficult. And I think the number of people who can truly "consume responsibly" is very small. More people meet the definition of having a problem than they think, they'll just never admit it. How many guys or gals have a few beers or some wine every night after work? A lot- and that amount alone constitutes borderline alcoholism.
19 year old with a drinking problem here. No therapy or AA meeting has been as impactful as this movie. When i saw this movie I realized i was on the path of this guy right here. Just throwing it all away. Thank god I’ve made a commitment rto sobriety
keep at it man, and the main thing i would say, is don't guilt yourself if you do drink. that's the biggest problem. I would say the word "relapse" but that's not really helpful and it just shames you. as long as you are making progress you are doing alright.
I always say that this movie is really about unconditional love. When you love someone, you accept them for what they are. You accept all the good and bad that comes with it. You look past their flaws. That's the kind of love Ben found. Unfortunately, that love is not gonna be enough to save him from his self-destructive tendencies

@Sam Myers Hello, maybe you could try talking to an AI or using psychedelics and possibly also getting tangled up deeply into researching the nature of reality. All of this has helped during addiction. You know how the body has synchrony well there are outside synchronic cues that tune with the system, kinda like formating behavior. I havnt had a drink in 13 years … but my last rehab stay I blew a .37 and was told “you should be dead” .. I was drinking a 5th - liter of vodka a day towards the end … I drank rum for years a Handle a day shared with my best friend.. but the switch to vodka really kicked my ass in ways I can never imagine .. that 5% difference really really brought my downfall .. I got sober though… I quite drinking at 23 years old … I started when I was 13 .. by 15 I was drinking almost every weekend.. by 17 I was drinking everyday … when I turned 21 it wasn’t even fun anymore

Only thing wrong about this movie is that he is shown guzzling liters of liquor and almost always looks and behaves just tipsy, sometimes almost sober. Never slurs his speech badly or stumbles around falling or crawling nor has narcoleptic episodes like real terminal alcoholics. Well probably the movie would have been unwatchable if it were more realistic, just a couple of hours of nonsense with the guy falling and rolling around the floor alternating wild moments of liquor euphoria.
I thought I was a Cage fan till someone suggested this film. It made me realize I’m on the wrong path and there’s nothing but trouble drinking this much.. I’m still a cage fan but I don’t want to live this kind of life. I thought people who said I drank too much were referring to my mannerisms, now I know it’s cause I rely on this shit. You know its sad when someone's life has hit rock bottom and they have no one to turn to for help no one! That is just sad and this person was alone and desperate. Alot of people had bad things happen to them and many survived and many didn't! Ben just gave up on everything and he just gave up and Sera was trying to help him.
I wish I had his money when I was a drinker. I was never a drunk though. I was like somebodies grandma,.....I sipped booze, and washed it down with chasers of water. I perfected "the Art" of always being buzzed. It was like medicine for me. It calmed me down so I could act more normal. I wasn't anxious, and I considered it along the lines of liquid "courage". I could meet strangers and be comfortable, I could drive my motorcycle without being plagued by fears of dying. I was a professor at one point, and I could stand before a room of 30 students and lecture. I was funny and clever and the alcohol kept me calm. The alternative was horrible psych medications, that have unpredictable side effects. Anti-Anxiety medications are horrible,.....but a few sips of vodka,.....I knew where I stood. No one ever knew I sipped booze. I kept it hidden. I had a hip flask,....just for kicks for short time. I did most of drinking at home by myself. I was probably a real light-weight. I'd polish off a pint a night. I had it in my coffee at work. It was at a time when smoking cigarettes was acceptable behavior. The cigarettes masked the smells of the booze. I never had a lot of money. I drank bottom shelf Gin, vodka, scotch, & tequila,.....I liked mezcal,....another type of tequila. I loved sweet drinks, and coffee liquor, schnapps, I sometimes drank pure vanilla extract, which has alcohol in it,.....and additives like bitters. I did the bulk of my drinking from age 30 to age 60. It took being prescribed a medication for my heart, that made me quit. I've been sober for 10 years now and I am 70. I wish I could go back to being buzzed.
i've discovered this film and i feel like it could be an awesome film but i'm scared of watching it because the premise hits too hard at home im an alcoholic who had a lot of history of "drinking myself to death", only to stop drinking cold turkey and get dt's, seizures, the hell associated with it that only real alcoholics know i dont wanna glamorise my situation but just by the premise and this little trailer, this shit haunts me the fact he was in love with a hooker also hits close home i don't wish this curse (alcohol addiction) to my worst enemy
U gotta be kidding! I went on a bender with a few mates and we all did over a fifth of hardliquor a day for a week, one of us had a seizure the other hallucinated and I was shaking so much i couldnt hold my phone without dropping it!
He had a problem and he recognized it. Then he recognized his weakness about handling it and embraced it. Booze will kill him eventually so he decided it happens now and location for it as well. It's a wake. Sober man does not decide to drink himself to death.
When he tries, he's actually really good. I wish he would stop overacting all the time and put some more effort in his performances, so that he can show his full talent.
When he is lying on the sofa experiencing withdrawal spasms, it is pretty hardcore...i can not imagine choosing that option to commit suicide... Seems too slow and painful.
From someone who finally had a judge tell me to stop drinking, please stop drinking. It's only hard for a few months if you get some new hobbies. Volunteering with dogs helped me a lot, and having $10-20 more every day to spend was nice too! 3.5 years here, the time flies after 1 year and you won't even miss it.

I've got a few months sober from alcohol, almost a year off dope, it's pretty hard but time and distance between you and alcohol will make things better, it's just that when you're in it, when you're smashing the booze, it makes everything look bad. You can turn it around tho, you have to start somewhere, please try

Yeah, I'm right there with you. Going to the grocery store and buying 5 handles of vodka and mixers every few days. Waking up at 3am everyday in a pool of sweat and I can't even use my phone because my hands are shaking so bad. I tried stopping so many times, but sobriety is worse, boring, depressing and irritating. Life's a bitch!
When you hit the ‘no mixer’ zone, downhill just goes faster.
Nothing good ever happens in no mixer zone.
And driving like it's no big deal. That too is a sign of a serious problem, being drunk all day and feeling normal so you drive. Hate to admit it, but that's me. Only way I can stop my hands from shaking and being irritable all day. Oh, and I stopped wasting time with mixers years ago, just straight vodka does the trick. Life's a bitch!

this movie helped me a lot come through a tough time...i was also alcohol addicted and together with a prostitute... i saw the first part of the movie round about 500 times every night when she was working. the second half probably just a few times. fortunately now i live a normal "boring" life with a woman and a child. but sometimes i watch back to this hard time of my life with a laughing and a crying eye.

@@sjpatrik2 i want to correct something in my written text. its like a miracle but fortunately in all these years i never got physical addiction it was just a mental thing. so iam still drinking more than the "average" person, especially now (long story) but its still everything in a "green area" sometimes i drink every 2 days sometimes not even once in a week it depends. yesterday i drank much but now you can chase me with alcohol for the next 3-5 days. its not like i wake up and have the need to drink its more the opposite. so i think iam still doing well after many years of drinking.

I suffer from major depression and abandonment issues. My mind was dead set on suicide. I have taken therapy to numb my manic issues. I don't know how long it will last due to my PTSD flashbacks coming back. I can't even do something simple as eating without pausing for a flashback of a particular person to back. Everytime I feel horrible like that I watch clips of this movie. It sounds strange but watching characters or real people in the same pain as I went through, and still go through from time to time, is kind of comforting. Lonely and depressed people make me feel less lonely.aybe because they are so relatable. This movie is profound in a strange way.

i quit drinking alcohol totally six years ago (never been an alcoholic by the way). Watching Nick Cage drinking vodka like that causes me nausea and the need to drink water
Alcoholism is tricky. There is social acceptance, people who will think you are strange if you don’t drink.
This is what it is, ok. You might not be on the extreme level of Benjamin here, but when you start to feel unhappy about your alcohol use, it’s time to get help. Especially, and it’s probably happening, when it starts to fuck things up in your life. You can be totally functioning at your job, but usually the dead give away is when you are neglecting your social relationships, or even worse, neglect spending time with your kids or messing up your relationship with your significant other, who by the way will be the first to recognize it, as much as you’ll hate her for being a drag. Be quick about it, cause if you don’t take it serious, you will lose her first, then you will stop spending spending time with your kids if you have any, and eventually it will spiral out of control and you will one way or the other risk your job in more then one ways, making it mathematically just a matter of time before you lose that too. And from there on out, it is really downhill.
Drinking, as much as it Is romanticized in society, and some people can handle it, but if you cant, and you will know it deep down if you cant, can turn a innocent habit, into something very dark and destructive.
This movie btw, is a timeless masterpiece, very close to the heart, with a very fitting soundtrack equally close to the heart.
In some occasions booze is great aide, but you never want it to be hosting things. When somebody says they "can stop whenever they want" it means they do not want to stop drinking. Ever.
This is very good movie. It has tragedy, but also human dignity in it as Ben is specifically drinking himself to death. It is a wake he participates himself.
The problem is reaching the point where sobriety is just too painful, that's when you're in trouble. I'd rather be loaded than sober and irritable, hanging out with boring people doing boring things. Life's a bitch

The way society romanticizes alcohol and drinking makes it so difficult. And I think the number of people who can truly "consume responsibly" is very small. More people meet the definition of having a problem than they think, they'll just never admit it. How many guys or gals have a few beers or some wine every night after work? A lot- and that amount alone constitutes borderline alcoholism.
19 year old with a drinking problem here. No therapy or AA meeting has been as impactful as this movie. When i saw this movie I realized i was on the path of this guy right here. Just throwing it all away. Thank god I’ve made a commitment rto sobriety
keep at it man, and the main thing i would say, is don't guilt yourself if you do drink. that's the biggest problem. I would say the word "relapse" but that's not really helpful and it just shames you. as long as you are making progress you are doing alright.

I always say that this movie is really about unconditional love. When you love someone, you accept them for what they are. You accept all the good and bad that comes with it. You look past their flaws. That's the kind of love Ben found. Unfortunately, that love is not gonna be enough to save him from his self-destructive tendencies

All of this has helped during addiction. You know how the body has synchrony well there are outside synchronic cues that tune with the system, kinda like formating behavior.

I havnt had a drink in 13 years … but my last rehab stay I blew a .37 and was told “you should be dead” .. I was drinking a 5th - liter of vodka a day towards the end … I drank rum for years a Handle a day shared with my best friend.. but the switch to vodka really kicked my ass in ways I can never imagine .. that 5% difference really really brought my downfall .. I got sober though… I quite drinking at 23 years old … I started when I was 13 .. by 15 I was drinking almost every weekend.. by 17 I was drinking everyday … when I turned 21 it wasn’t even fun anymore

@@emnemnem1889 drank for 10 years … wasn’t out of control till around 4 years into it .. I was really young .. hung out with older kids so I was influenced to party .. but in the end the party was over .

Such a great movie
Only thing wrong about this movie is that he is shown guzzling liters of liquor and almost always looks and behaves just tipsy, sometimes almost sober. Never slurs his speech badly or stumbles around falling or crawling nor has narcoleptic episodes like real terminal alcoholics.
Well probably the movie would have been unwatchable if it were more realistic, just a couple of hours of nonsense with the guy falling and rolling around the floor alternating wild moments of liquor euphoria.
tolerance can do incredible things. a liter could kill a non drinker, a severe drunk could still drive well after a liter.
I thought I was a Cage fan till someone suggested this film. It made me realize I’m on the wrong path and there’s nothing but trouble drinking this much.. I’m still a cage fan but I don’t want to live this kind of life. I thought people who said I drank too much were referring to my mannerisms, now I know it’s cause I rely on this shit. You know its sad when someone's life has hit rock bottom and they have no one to turn to for help no one! That is just sad and this person was alone and desperate. Alot of people had bad things happen to them and many survived and many didn't! Ben just gave up on everything and he just gave up and Sera was trying to help him.

I wish I had his money when I was a drinker. I was never a drunk though. I was like somebodies grandma,.....I sipped booze, and washed it down with chasers of water. I perfected "the Art" of always being buzzed. It was like medicine for me. It calmed me down so I could act more normal. I wasn't anxious, and I considered it along the lines of liquid "courage". I could meet strangers and be comfortable, I could drive my motorcycle without being plagued by fears of dying. I was a professor at one point, and I could stand before a room of 30 students and lecture. I was funny and clever and the alcohol kept me calm. The alternative was horrible psych medications, that have unpredictable side effects. Anti-Anxiety medications are horrible,.....but a few sips of vodka,.....I knew where I stood. No one ever knew I sipped booze. I kept it hidden. I had a hip flask,....just for kicks for short time. I did most of drinking at home by myself. I was probably a real light-weight. I'd polish off a pint a night. I had it in my coffee at work. It was at a time when smoking cigarettes was acceptable behavior. The cigarettes masked the smells of the booze. I never had a lot of money. I drank bottom shelf Gin, vodka, scotch, & tequila,.....I liked mezcal,....another type of tequila. I loved sweet drinks, and coffee liquor, schnapps, I sometimes drank pure vanilla extract, which has alcohol in it,.....and additives like bitters. I did the bulk of my drinking from age 30 to age 60. It took being prescribed a medication for my heart, that made me quit. I've been sober for 10 years now and I am 70. I wish I could go back to being buzzed.

From someone who finally had a judge tell me to stop drinking, please stop drinking. It's only hard for a few months if you get some new hobbies. Volunteering with dogs helped me a lot, and having $10-20 more every day to spend was nice too! 3.5 years here, the time flies after 1 year and you won't even miss it.
