Cage absolutely nailed this role. I fell in love with this film when it came out nearly 30 years ago. It’s beautiful. It’s sad. It’s funny. It’s tragic. And just fucking epic.

He literally met with late stage alcoholics to nail the role. Well deserved Oscar for this. Anyone who says Cage is a bad actor, I point to this. He just made some bad financial choices and took every role that came his way.

No fireworks, just good acting, a story that everyone can feel "for not for the grace of God there go I," and just that intangible "something" about this movie that's hard to put your finger on. He kills himself, yet he was probably more "free" in those last days than at any time in his life. Letting go of life can sure feel good.

This movie is not about alcoholism. Its about unconditional love. Ben could have been any other self-destructive character, like a heroin junkie, or an AIDS patient. The point is, he was clearly on a downward spiral and still found someone who loved him despite of his imperfections. He was accepted for all the good and the bad that came with him. And that is what makes unconditional love tough.
