It was the greatest rivalry in all of professional sports back then. Not only was the hate, to this day, unparalleled, nearly every game meant something, usually a lot of something. We'll never see the likes of it again. The only other one that was close was Steelers/Raiders.

@@NosferatusCoffin I'll absolutely agree with that. Steelers/Raiders was brutal in it's own right, especially in the 70s. Mean Joe Green said himself that his greatest, most intimidating opponent was Bob Brown. Look it up on this platform.
You're right that nearly every Redskin/Cowboy game had a lot riding on it. I will sorely miss those days.

The redskins playing IN DC just hit different. There was no greater home field advantage than Joe Gibbs Redskins playing at RFK. The hood area around the stadium full of rabid fans ready to tip your bus over and take its wheels had opponents shitting themselves. The fans relationship with them was closer than any city could have with their team. You just saw a multi lombardi winning hall of famer tell you that a home playoff game was so far above his rings. Let that sink in for a second. Taking the skins out of DC took the soul out of the city.

I got to see the second half of this game recently on you tube talking about the 1982 NFC Title game. The Redskins are only up 4. Skins punt. Hogeboom zips Dallas downfield. He misses Timmy Newsome down the middle on a critical 3rd down. They miss a FG att, Redskins punt again. The first play after the punt Mel Kauffman intercepts Hogeboom sets up a FG 24-17 then two plays after the KO Dexter Manley tips a Hogeboom screen into the arms of Darryl Grant who runs in for a TD 31-17. Then Dallas turns the ball over on downs on its next possession with 5 minutes to play. The defense came up with huge plays that entire second half and played an almost lights out Super Bowl the following week. Ritchie Pettibon was the best defensive coordinator in the game for a dozen years and belongs in the HOF.

The redskins have been drafting o and d line better than everybody since the 90s but have been so awful at picking a qb that their prowess at the draft is overshadowed because you can’t win without a competent qb. 9 games of Alex smith with an old Peterson shows you that the joe Gibbs is timeless.

Santana Moss a.k.a the Cowboy Killer, Darrell Green's last home game, and I think that this is true of most of our minds, THERE WILL NEVER be another Sean Taylor... and probably my best memory about that situation, was when the next time the Redskin played the Cowboys at the Ol Texas Stadium, players from BOTH teams went to midfield and said a prayer... The Washington Redskins will always hold a very special part of my heart... 18 years of memories that will NEVER leave me and hopefully all of us...

This was the 3rd straight, and last NFC Championship the Cowboys would be in for 10yrs. It might have been a small(or large) disadvantage that Dallas had to be on the road for 3 straight years. The best chance they had to make it to the Superbowl was the game against the 49'ers but thanks to Joe Montana, it didn't happen and Philly crushed Dallas in the Vet the year before.

This was the Washington Redskins finest moment, no doubt. One thing is to watch this game on video (or DVD highlights) another thing is to watch it live on TV in January 1983...you can actually feel the scalping and the hate that the Cowboys were going to receive...a good old fashioned butt whipping of the greatest magnitude of years in the making. The only loss the Redskins had in 1982 was to Dallas in the regular season...this was payback in the making, big time. The loss was also marked with some trash talking by the Cowboys (as usual Landry couldn't control his team) ...the Redskins used that as a motivating factor and deep down (according to many Redskins testimonies like Theismann, Grimm, Riggins and a few others after their playing days were over in books and interviews) they knew that they were going to meet up in the playoffs. The only thing Dallas needed was to make sure that they had good medical coverage when anyone enters the hospital in the Washington area (am I right, Danny White??)...yeah, this was a beatdown..
for the record, I'm not a Redskins fan but a NFL fan who witnessed a great game the Redskins played. This put them over the hump and got them to the Super Bowl where they won over the Miami Dolphins. The franchise 1st championship is always unique and especially if beating an Archrival is part of the success. Ya had to have seen this live to fully understand that the Redskins were on a mission.
