This was my parents' first Super Bowl in the US, having just moved to DC. They always talked about this Super Bowl. They were so nervous after the first quarter. It's crazy how the tide of the game changed after the 2nd.
What gets lost in this miraculous performance from Doug Williams is that Washington also set the record for the most yards by a RB rushing. 204 yards by Timmy Smith in that game & was second for MVP votes. To this day no RB has matched that performance. Considering Otis Anderson, Emmitt Smith, & Terrell Davis all won SBMVP in the years since. No back has come close to touching that record.
I disagree, I think many many are aware of Smith's performance. True, QB gets so glory and such, but the way that man ran in that game.........with those big runs........lots of folks just attribute that to the passing game being so good that day. In the first qtr, smith had a twenty plus yard run called back. He could have had more yards. Now, the side of me that may agree with you is that three of those Smith runs accounted for the majority of his 204 yards.........58 yard TD, I believe a 42 yard run before the Clint Didier TD, and that first okay of the 4th qtr where he ran for 32 to put it on the eleven yard line. Add in a 19 yard run in the 2nd qtr and we have 151 yards on four plays,......so yeah, I get it......wait .....am I contradicting myself!? Hahaha. I was in 12th grade watching this game and I remember saying Smith for MVP, but yeah, William's deserved it. Life long Redskins/Commanders fan here. Be safe.
Both Smith and Williams benefitted from an offensive line that stepped up and dominated the Broncos. If I picked MVP it would be Joe Jacoby, Raleigh McKenzie, Jeff Bostic, R.C. Thielmann, Mark May and Don Warren. When your Back up QB, 4th string RB and 3rd WR at the start of the season are breaking SB records it’s because your Oline won the game.

So many dynasties result from the lucky happenstance of a great coach having a great QB who are together for many years, but none of Gibbs' QB's were HoFers. Theisman had TWO seasons with a passer rating above 90 (both of them when they went to the Super Bowl) and was 77.4 for his career. Doug made it plain that given the opportunity, we could not only play, but excel at the highest level. We just needed the CHANCE. The first Super Bowl I ever watched. I was a big Broncos fan as a kid and I still am to this day. I remember Elway hitting Nattiel for that first TD and I jumped up off the floor and began shouting! Then they went up 10-0 and I practically began celebrating a win! My dad told me “This game isn’t over yet!” Then came the 2nd quarter! 🤦♂️
This game holds a special place in my heart, so let me just mention a few things. 1. I had this recorded on VCR and probably watched it at least 20 or 30 times over the years. Watching this recap, I remember every single play. 2. I remember those Redskins players so well. Jeff Bostic Joe Jacoby, Mark May on the offensive line. Charles Mann and Dexter Manley on the defensive line. Don Warren and Clint Didier, the 2 tight ends. But I especially remember "the posse," that tremendous trio of receivers in Art Monk, Ricky Sanders, and Gary Clark. It's ironic that Monk was the greatest of them BY FAR, and he was barely mentioned in this game. It was all Sanders and Clark. 3. A strange memory, but I remember Al Michaels promoting "a cute new show that will debut after tonight's game called The Wonder Years." The first episode aired right after this game, and I LOVED that show, especially Winnie Cooper. Anyway, wonderful memories. As a side note, a few years later the Redskins had an even better team that went 14-2 with Mark Rypien as quarterback. That preseason my dad took me to watch them scrimmage in person and I got to see the players up close. That was pretty cool for a kid, but I had NO IDEA I was watching the team that would be super bowl champions later that year. Good memories.
If you watched the playoff game in Chicago you would have known the 87 Redskins didn’t know how to quit. The regular season home game against NY with another QB was another. The 87 Redskins were my favorite Redskins team of all time because through all the injuries and adversity they found a way to win games.
Wow. I’ve only known the final score of 42-10. I never knew Denver played an almost perfect 1st quarter with Doug Williams getting injured on top of that. I never watched the highlights because I figured it was like the 55-10 beat down Denver got from the 49ers.
Tampa not resigning Doug Williams was one of the biggest butterfly effect in NFL history. After Doug left the Bucs needed a new starting QB so they trade their first round pick in 1984 to the Bengals for Jack Thompson. Then the Bucs finish 1983 at 2-14 but instead of getting a high draft pick it went to the Bengals. The Bengals went and traded that to the Patriots, who selected Irving Fryer. Then after they signed Steve Young out of the USFL they continued to stink but they also got the first overall pick in the 1987 draft, where they took Vinny T. They subsequently traded Young to the 49ers. Then after Vinny continued to underachieve the Bucs go ahead and trade their 1992 first round pick to the Colts for Chris Chandler. The Bucs finished 1991 at 3-13 and didn't have a first rounder to show for it. As for the Colts they had the first two picks in the 1992 draft - theirs and Tampa's. After not paying Doug Williams what he was worth the team spent the rest of the 80's pissing away first round picks to replace him when all they did was get worse and worse. They re-sign Williams long term and they don't trade those two first rounders and they don't end up drafting Vinny T. or Bo Jackson and they don't end up with Steve Young or trading him to San Francisco afterwards. A bit more to it than that but that is the gist of it. In summation, letting Doug Williams leave affected the following teams over the next several years: Tampa, Cincinnati, New England, Indianapolis, Washington, San Francisco, and the LA Raiders. Seven teams that were immediately impacted. You can throw in the Dolphins, Eagles, Lions, and Rams, too, if you want, since Hugh Green, Jimmie Giles, and Kevin House all worked their way out of there after what they saw happen to Williams....AND.....James Wilder wouldn't have gotten ran into the ground, too....AND....Wayne Fontes might have been the successor to John McKay.
I remember this game. I was 11 years old at the time. I watched this game at my grandma's house. Doug Williams set history by being the first quarterback to win the Superbowl
In the 2nd quarter Washington scored 35 points on 18 plays. With an average drive length of 71 yards. It wasn’t like they were getting a short field, they were ripping right through the Denver defense.
What an incredible turnaround. This wasn't a fluke 10-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Denver was up by 10 and dominating Washington. It also looked like Doug Williams leg went RG3 for a minute.
perhaps salty it turned into a blowout? As a fan, the game was AWESOME! But do you want tomorrow's game to be a blowout. unless you're a fan of either team, you want to see a good game. plus being an announcer in the last quarter of a blowout must be rough.
Doug Williams almost threw a couple bad picks early, and the recovered Skins fumble….feel like there’s an alternate universe where the Broncos won this game in a shootout
I have been a loyal Broncos fan growing up in Denver. I watched this game as an almost 10 year old boy. We were stuck at church until right before Elway threw that touchdown to Ricky Nattiel. Denver's defense completely betrayed that offense. Mike Shanahan had a really good game plan for Elway, but Washington's trio of receivers (Monk, Sanders and Clarke) were effortlessly getting behind Denver's defense. To counteract the deep pass, they dropped both safeties, giving up huge passing lines to Timmy Smith who continued to chew up big yards on every play. By that time Elway was having to play from behind and really he didn't look terrible in that game, but it was all on him to will his team to victory. There was no pass protection and Elway threw a lot of bad passes in that third quarter. Washington's defense had it easy in the second half, just pin their ears back and go after the quarterback. Game. Set. Match.
2:03 the Broncos did the same QB sneak the year before and it worked for a touchdown. The defensive tackles did a stunt and Dave Butz was able to stop Elway on a one yard loss. Instead of being 14-0 it was only 10-0. The second quarter changed everything.
Denver Broncos unfortunately had some bad super bowl loses. Definitely the biggest Super Bowl Blowout 55-10 49ers completely running up the scoreboard then in 2013-14 Super Bowl Seattle Seahawks Defense dominated Denver Broncos 43-8
This game when it started looked like the Broncos were gonna destroy Washington. And so strange how the game turned because these are events that typically happen in the 2nd half. Not getting the fumbled kickoff was so huge because Denver with all the momentum possibly going up 17-0 in the first quarter would have been a deathblow to Washington. But the underestimated moment was Dave Butz eating up the Elway QB draw holding the Broncos to a field goal. Possibly going up 21-0 likely means we are watching a whole different video with Elway getting his first title here.
I came back to look at these highlights because of what Russell Wilson said🙄...Grambling State University's own Doug Williams orchestrated the greatest Super Bowl ever. I remember every bit of it.
35 points in the 2nd quarter on 17 plays just think about that for a second, Doug Williams I feel like was the best Quarterback running Coach Gibbs' offense nothing against Mark Rypien but Doug imo was the best at it
Doug Williams is the first person that scarred me in sports as a kid. They absolutely destroyed the Broncos. I had to go to church with my parents and when I came home and put it on it was just so sad to me. I was like 11 lmao
The first half really was amazing, especially since it felt like the Broncos were going to blow out the Redskins after the first quarter. Then the game completely flipped.

As a Giants fan I don't like the Redskins, uh I mean Commanders, but on that day I was a rooting for Doug Williams and the Redskins, uh I mean Commanders. That was a great game. Kudos to Doug Williams!
It's amazing how far broadcasting and production has come in 2 decades.
Fr now it's tim burkhartd and Greg Olsen and no more joe buck on fox is still weird
I don't know if anyone feels the same way but it's much worse now. I use to watch every second of every game and highlights and pregame. Now I dispise watching it. Barely watch the games either it's sad man but I just don't feel it anymore and I am only 47 not like I am 70 lol
Tony Lilly burned like breakfast toast, #22 got his cardio chasing Redskins receivers into the end zone all day.
Man, Elway got it rough in the 80's. This, then that beatdown by the Niners.
Timmy Smith's impact was amazing, quite a performance.
3. A strange memory, but I remember Al Michaels promoting "a cute new show that will debut after tonight's game called The Wonder Years."
The first episode aired right after this game, and I LOVED that show, especially Winnie Cooper.
That field condition though 😂 both QBs dropping back 10 steps then nearly breaking their leg
Me = how many times you’ve lost the Super Bowl in a blowout?
Broncos = yes
Nothing but counter trey and play action off of it Joe Gibbs offense was amazing.
When it was 10-0 I thought Elway is gonna get his super bowl. Then Doug hit another gear, that 2nd quarter so much fun to watch.
Just like you thought Matt Ryan was going to get his when it was 28-3!!
@@wilnerolivier7971 I did?
If you watched the playoff game in Chicago you would have known the 87 Redskins didn’t know how to quit. The regular season home game against NY with another QB was another. The 87 Redskins were my favorite Redskins team of all time because through all the injuries and adversity they found a way to win games.
Surprised they're allowed to show old Redskins highlights the world might stop spinning
It’s actually sports porn for rednecks and racists
Wow. I’ve only known the final score of 42-10. I never knew Denver played an almost perfect 1st quarter with Doug Williams getting injured on top of that. I never watched the highlights because I figured it was like the 55-10 beat down Denver got from the 49ers.
It was a beatdown!!
its crazy cause denver up 10 - 0, williams gets injured and it looks like an easy win, then redskins say, "aight, playtime is over, lets get serious"
Wow, if you just stop it after that early Elway touchdown pass you'd think they were the ones to have a great day. What a terrific bomb.
the Best Superbowl Performance EVER..... doug did it
Doug williams, First black qb to start and win a Super Bowl. First Qb to take the bucs to the playoffs
14:32 you can hear Doug Williams yelling at Timmy Smith on that play...
I heard it, too! 😂😂😂
What an incredible turnaround. This wasn't a fluke 10-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Denver was up by 10 and dominating Washington. It also looked like Doug Williams leg went RG3 for a minute.
Dan Dierdorf's complete astonishment at 10:46 is hilarious.
One of the Commentators was salty The Broncos got SMACKED!!
perhaps salty it turned into a blowout? As a fan, the game was AWESOME! But do you want tomorrow's game to be a blowout. unless you're a fan of either team, you want to see a good game. plus being an announcer in the last quarter of a blowout must be rough.
the legend
Denver Broncos Against Washington Redskins From 1987 Super Bowl Thanks For Uploading
Technically took place in 88 but the conclusion of the 87 season
As a SD sports fan I’ll always love the Q/ Jack Murphy. Great memories
Doug Williams almost threw a couple bad picks early, and the recovered Skins fumble….feel like there’s an alternate universe where the Broncos won this game in a shootout
Timmy Smith went from hero to zero after this game.
5:58 the start of what fans will dubbed it as 'the quarter'
6:11 hello sports fans
Man people forget the Redskins won 3 SBs in a span of like 11 yrs which is pretty darn good.
And made another.
I loved this Super Bowl
A friend of mine from Colorado once told me "You're not a real Broncos fan until you see them get blown out in the Superbowl"
Doug throws a beautiful deep ball
It’s trip watching Elway in the shotgun and then dropping back another 10 yards 😂🤣
He had the arm to get the ball to his receivers no matter how far he dropped back.
Beltway was very inaccurate, but had a rocket arm
15 step dropbacks lol
This abc sports intro! 🔥🔥🔥
I remember this game in jr.highschool.thanks.🔆🤚
Game. Set. Match.
Offense only scored 10 points.
Can't let them off the hook.
@@MichaelMurphy-kj3xf why are we having this conversation? Offense played like crap. I wasn't letting them off the hook. Elway threw 3 ints.
Dude, you wrote "The defense betrayed the offense."
Wake up.
If you Repent for your sins and have faith in Jesus and you shall have eternal life in heaven 🙏 ✨️ 🙌
Love technology and how it makes old videos nice and clear
2:03 the Broncos did the same QB sneak the year before and it worked for a touchdown. The defensive tackles did a stunt and Dave Butz was able to stop Elway on a one yard loss. Instead of being 14-0 it was only 10-0. The second quarter changed everything.
NFL Throwback, can you do every super bowl intro from the first to the current one that is comig tommorow
Forever hail to skins 🖤
Denver Broncos unfortunately had some bad super bowl loses. Definitely the biggest Super Bowl Blowout 55-10 49ers completely running up the scoreboard then in 2013-14 Super Bowl Seattle Seahawks Defense dominated Denver Broncos 43-8
LOB exposed both mannings that season
The ambush at super bowl 22
@ 8:36 when he motioned the receiver from the right. 1 that receiver had a really nice block. 2 that's some madden type stuff
Washington man handled the broncos like dayyyyymmmmm
I came back to look at these highlights because of what Russell Wilson said🙄...Grambling State University's own Doug Williams orchestrated the greatest Super Bowl ever. I remember every bit of it.
35 points in the 2nd quarter on 17 plays just think about that for a second, Doug Williams I feel like was the best Quarterback running Coach Gibbs' offense nothing against Mark Rypien but Doug imo was the best at it
18 plays actually.
Broncos had all the momentum at the end of the first quarter. Never imagined 42 straight points for the Skins.
Too bad that Timmy Smith faded away after his spectacular performance.
Very sad imo😒😒😒😒
A memorable comment made by Dan Dierdorf, 'Look At Lilly'. 42-10 Redskins!!!
Doug Williams is the first person that scarred me in sports as a kid. They absolutely destroyed the Broncos. I had to go to church with my parents and when I came home and put it on it was just so sad to me. I was like 11 lmao
Broncos: stuff the run with great d line.
Redskins: play action, see ya, too fast.
Did they stuff the run, though? Timmy Smith put up 204 on the ground with 2 TDs.
Nobody give Joe Gibbs his flowers slim was dialing that shit up. Doug made history
This trio of commentators was the best IMO.
The first half really was amazing, especially since it felt like the Broncos were going to blow out the Redskins after the first quarter. Then the game completely flipped.
They wanted him to throw the game. Instead he became the first black quarterback to win a Super Bowl. Then was blackballed
as a Skins fan I'am coping from the cowboys loss from 2 weeks ago, but that sanders td dance we cool ngl
