Bro I watch the 82’ championship game once a year for a good goosebump thrill and the tears of joy!!! I was 7 watching this game and remember it like yesterday!!!
John seems to get left out of many "Greatest running backs" conversations but as a long time Cowboy fan I can attest that he truly was one of the greatest.
I could listen to Pat Summerall, John Madden, Hank Stram, Don Meridtith, and Frank Gifford all day. And did. None of today’s announcers come close to these guys. None. Peace. Out.
I always love how, when Riggins scored a TD, it wasn’t a surprise. No dancing. No showboating. No hysterics. Flip the ball to the official like a PROFESSIONAL who has been in the end zone before.
One of the classic Riggins stories is that when he was scouted, he was told by a scout "You don't have outside speed." He responded by saying "Luckily the end zones aren't on the outside, they're where I'm heading."
I always found power backs to be more conducive to winning. If teams average 7 yards per pass play and only 4 per run play why do teams ever run the ball? To get consistent reliable positive yards. You take a back like Barry Sanders who averaged 5 yards per carry but was completely erratic and often got negative yards there was no advantage to running over passing.
@ckobo84 If you gain 3.4 yards per carry, you'll get a first down on 3rd down every time and eventually score a TD On every drive. As famous Ohio State coach Woody Hayes once said, "when you throw the ball, three things can happen, two of them bad."
Mike & Mike (Greenberg and Golic) once interviewed Lawrence Taylor. LT was asked about the hardest hit he ever felt during his NFL career. LT said he tried to tackle Riggins on a goal line play, and Riggins's knee hit LT square in the head. LT said he didn't know where he was, and as LT tried to run off the field to the sideline, Harry Carson had to go gather LT and turn him towards his own sideline because LT was staggering towards the Washington bench.

My family held Redskin season tickets form the 1955 to 2018 and I never missed a home game. Riggins was a blast to watch. He would go out there, do his job, flip the ball to the ref, go sit on the bench and often start the oxygen. No flash but pure entertainment. I can still hear the diesel horn blowing with the crowd roaring. Fun memories. Thanks for the compilation.

Great sense of humor. i remember he was on quiz show where celebrities played for $$ to their favorite charities. When he was what was his favorite charity he said,"The Riggins retirement fund" Hilarious!
Riggins is a true warrior! And remember when he took the bow to the crowd after running his guts out for us …. I just remember the crowd going nuts and he showed us he did it just for us!!
Last time I remember following the NFL. This guy was better than any 20 fools they have today. Not only could he go up the gut he could catch the corners also.
As a kid I was a huge Cowboys fan but loved watching Riggins with the Redskins. He looked so cool running in that Redskins uniform. The big wide stripes on his pants and that cool logo on the helmet with those stripes in the middle of the helmet. He would truck fools all over the field. Then you had the opposite in Tony Dorsett small and fast.
Haha Awesome commentary because as a kid before I knew better, the Cowboys were my favorite team because of the cool looking star. This was 1980 then I transitioned to the Redskins because lived in the DC area! Then it was cool to be a part of the Cowboys and Redskins rivalry….
@@flyguy75kmsame with me buddy lol, in the late ‘70s I was all about the Star and those cheerleaders lol, then around 1980-81 I became a full blown Redskins fan. I grew up across the Potomac river from D.C, in Northern Virginia.
As a Skins fan, it was a privilege to watch Riggo for many years...not many were built like him. What's amazing is he played like this for well over a decade, hardly ever got hurt, and today, he shows none of the after-effects of so many who took less hits than he did. Maybe he was just a different breed, or maybe he simply knew how to run the football in a way that he dished out punishment, but never really received any real punishment.
He avoided tacklers to get around the corner and gain speed and momentum…once he made the turn and headed for the first down or end zone, OMG he was looking to punish somebody…anybody. My all time favorite Redskin.
John Rigging was a powerful man amongst strong but overmatched defenders! Riggo was a perfect combination of great speed with tremendous power. Rigging was a locomotive/racehorse purebred athlete. With the Mighty Hogs O-line blocking, Rigging was an intimidating and valuable weapon in the Redskins offense. Oh yeah, Rigging was a pretty decent pass catcher also! YIKES said opposing defensive coordinators! The Skins we're an absolute juggernaut in this era.💪💪🤛🤜😤😃😉🤘👍👆🏈🏉🏈🏉🏈🏉🏈🏆🏆🏆

I remember watching games as a kid in the 80's where he would have it looked like the hole defense of line on him and you couldn't even see him and you could see the pile still moving that's how strong he was
This video reminded me of something I knew about Riggins but had forgotten - he had amazing balance when he was running. Tripped up, hit, staggering, he could almost always get it back together in order to keep power running down the field - and take a couple of people with him. When we played football in the empty lot, one of us was always John Riggins even though we lived nowhere near Washington D.C.
Advanced in years I remember watching a couple of televised games where Riggins had a clear road to the end zone and would alter couse to run over another defensive player.
Saw him run in the 70's and he was a devastating punisher as was Larry Csonka ! Jerome Bettis was out of the same mold as was Earl Cambell ! Amazing low centers og gravity for big men and they were like locomotives off the tracks !
If you pay close attention to John's running style, you'll notice without question this man had superior balance, no matter what position his body was in. Riggins was a stark hybridization of a ballerina, & a fVck'n bolling ball!
Yea I agree seeing guys draped on his back as he chugged along for first downs! Then remember they would show him on the sidelines after the touchdown sucking the oxygen down…. As a kid that oxygen tank looked so cool because he was getting it done…. Now as an old man I fully understand now why!! Lol
GREAT compilation, thank you! Riggo was my favorite RB growing up, other than Terry Metcalf, who played for me beloved Cardinals. Year after year the Redskins knocked the Cards out of playoff contention....unless the Cowboys did it first!
Glad you enjoyed ...thanks for watching & commenting! GREAT choices of fav players...Terry Metcalf was phenomenal "phantom catch" and all ha...as was his son, Eric (both later played for Redskins). Cardinals rivalry w Redskins/Cowboys flies under the radar today... needs a video...your St. Louis Cards had some tremendous teams!
It’s almost like he eloquently ran you over so he could run over the next defender. What a bruiser! I miss those days when the way you controlled the line of scrimmage usually determined the victory. FIGHT! For Ol DCeeeeeee!
It's amazing that he didn't get injured badly from all those hits. I mean, his knees and ankles had to carry all that weight while he was making cuts then he'd bounce off tacklers and carry three guys with all their weight. It's really something how his body held together from all that abuse.
Here is The Savior YaH The Heavenly FATHER HIMSELF was Who they Crucified/Pierced for our sins and “HERE IS THE PROOF” From the Ancient Semitic: "Yad He Vav He" is what Moshe (Moses) wrote, when Moses asked YaH His Name (Exodus 3) Ancient Semitic Direct Translation Yad - "Behold The Hand" He - "Behold the Breath" Vav - "Behold The NAIL"
And most of his production was later in his career! He got stereotyped as a young player and never got the ball as often as he should have! But I think he holds the NFL record for most rushing yards after the age of 30!
Johns Riggins and Earl Campbell were THE BEST That Ever Ran The Football! Never saw them dropped for a loss. Always Moving Forward! Nobody Could Stop Them.
Bill Simpson, free safety for the Rams laid Earl Campbell out going down the side line. I never saw anyone do that to Big John, much less a 185 pound safety.
My biggest nightmare as a child was in the Superbowl when Mcneal slipped following motion and tried to arm tackle the diesel. That play sealed the deal. To this day, I still see his hand grasping his jersey and then being pulled off. Ouch.
I was 7 years old watching that play and I remember cheering and crying after the touchdown….. man I laugh now because they was real tears !! I just ate and drank Redskins!!!
I was a young adult at the time of this Super Bowl. I think the two biggest plays for the Redskins was Riggins' 4th down touchdown run and Joe Theisman preventing an interception by a Miami defensive lineman after Theisman's pass was deflected. That surely would have been a touchdown for Miami.
Great powerful legs, being on the track team even as a big kid helped him immensely, once you put pads on him he was tough to bring down, just like Czonka.
I’m born in 79’. Didn’t start watch NFL football, until I was 10. I became a Redskins fan, mainly because of “The Posse”. Unfortunately, never had the privilege of seeing John Riggins play. You better believe I knew about him. Seeing videos showed why he was probably one the greatest Redskins of all-time. He was so, POWERFUL. The closest thing I seen to John Riggins was Mike Alstott.
Yes....no dance, no spike, no lining up with a bunch of others doing a celebratory skit that we don't understand or posing for a picture. Just a blue collar worker doing his job.

When Larry Brown had to retire due to constant injuries I was heartbroken as a kid, but I was happy to adopt John Riggins as my new favorite player shortly after. My favorite Riggins memory as an adult was the matter of fact way he handled the ball to the referee when he "celebrated "a touchdown
Larry Brown was an underrated warrior...
@@cosmokramerization my first sports hero taught me a lot about shear determination that still influences me as an old man
@@johntabler349 Yea I agree seeing guys draped on his back as he chugged along for first downs! Then remember they would show him on the sidelines after the touchdown sucking the oxygen down…. Great running back.
Watching riggins run over people was amazing.
Even as a lifelong Cowboy fan. You gotta admit Riggins was an absolute Powerhouse!! 👍
The Sandra Day O Connor story is one of the best NFL stories ever….only Riggo could get away with that!😂
Need the famous clip of Chief Zee at Super Bowl XVII.."crank up that diesel...vroom...vroom...vroom"....
Man! you brought back so many memories. A true free spirit, great player both on and off the field.
Also then you hear about what happened at the dinner with Justice O’connor…. “Loosen up Sandy Baby!” Then he passes out drunk under the table!
Last time I remember following the NFL. This guy was better than any 20 fools they have today. Not only could he go up the gut he could catch the corners also.
It's amazing he was able to play so long after carrying the ball so much.
Another straight up badass Legend. 🤘🏻🎅
I remember The Diesel Riggins: Amazing! GOD Bless You...
Flippin the ball to the ref, best TD celebration ever
Amen to that. Deserving of own video. Thank you for watching & commenting.
His strength was great, but his pace and vision were also tremendous.
Agree whole heartedly !!!

Nice guy, nice family, and made a good neighbor (until I moved to SC)!
I remember watching games as a kid in the 80's where he would have it looked like the hole defense of line on him and you couldn't even see him and you could see the pile still moving that's how strong he was
I had forgotten how good that Washington O line was, man them hogs could open a hole.
The QB could have tea and crumpets in the backfield before anybody got close!!’
The only comp to the Hogs was the Raiders in the 70’s and the Pats in the 00’s.
Riggins was a stark hybridization of a ballerina, & a fVck'n bolling ball!
i loved watchin him as a kid now that a true runnin back just runnin people over!!!!!
Man, it was fun to be a Skins fan back then.
Yea I agree seeing guys draped on his back as he chugged along for first downs! Then remember they would show him on the sidelines after the touchdown sucking the oxygen down…. Just about every clip, Riggin's doesn't go down before he has at least three defenders hanging off of him. Punishing!
**Yes Sir**
John Riggins blasting thru the Cowboys line for 6 and Pat Summerall making the call. The Trifecta.
@@nflxfiles I liked the fact you showed some of his blocking prowess wasn't Riggo's favorite thing but he was among the best at it when he did it
Metcalf was fantastic. Probably the most explosive running back not named Joe Delaney or Chris Johnson

And most of his production was later in his career! He got stereotyped as a young player and never got the ball as often as he should have! But I think he holds the NFL record for most rushing yards after the age of 30!
my earliest memory of watching sports is the 83 superbowl and the big td run then I watched every nc state basketball game that year
Love it. Thank you for watching and sharing. Hail.
Johns Riggins and Earl Campbell were THE BEST That Ever Ran The Football! Never saw them dropped for a loss. Always Moving Forward! Nobody Could Stop Them.
The difference is Riggins had an all time great O line and Campbell had an all time worst O line.
Bill Simpson, free safety for the Rams laid Earl Campbell out going down the side line. I never saw anyone do that to Big John, much less a 185 pound safety.
Jim Brown is #1. Then Cambell, Riggins and Czonka.
@@raymondlee3414 And Tatumn...in the end zone.
He lived on my fedex route a decade ago. Dude was in his 60's and would be outside chopping wood with an axe. A man's man for sure.
How many running backs did u ever see break off Lawrence Taylor ? This man is in the top 10 running backs of all time
Anybody can miss a tackle I bet Lawrence Taylor made that tackle on riggins more than he missed I guarantee you that, this is just a small clip
exactly
Yeah and gave LT a concussion w his knee...Oh yeah...

Now that is a running back!
I was 9 years old and experienced some disappointment with the skins. When he scored I was on cloud 9.
6"2 235 lbs. with sprinters speed.
Great powerful legs, being on the track team even as a big kid helped him immensely, once you put pads on him he was tough to bring down, just like Czonka.
This is football. Makes me tear up, it isn't the same now.. .both for nfl fans in general and for Redskins fans in particular
Love Riggins. This Jets fan wishes we couldve kept him but I always rooted for him as a Redskin too
I donno if broken tackles were a stat back then but man Big John was just special
One of my favorite players of all time since I’ve been watching football for 40 plus years of my life! 💪🏾
He was fun to watch. I only remember him playing for Washington.
Best player of all time.
As a fan of the Tom Landry Cowboys, this video brings back some great memories! Thanks for posting 👍🏾
My pleasure thank you for watching and commenting...your comment is what being a football fan is all about.
A lineman sized running back. Love it. Just like Mel Blount on the other side of the ball, a linebacker sized Corner.
His best quote was, "Loosen up Sandy baby." That was to Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O' Conner. His play on the field speaks for itself!
That and "I'm bored, I'm broke and I'm back".
Thanks for watching & commenting!
I remember watching as a kid. Unbelievable running abilities.
Please bring those days back
He ran like a diesel truck, anything got in his way he attempted to run them over. Riggins was spectacular. And very dependable.
He is one player that I respect and admire more and more as time goes by
Amen. Humble warrior who only got better with age. Thanks for watching.
John Madden really liked the Redskins, the Hogs and John Riggins.
He just calls em as he sees it. 😆💥🤪💥🤑💥
A bit smaller than Csonka but much faster. He could be at top speed in three steps.
Growing up in Kansas does it every time, he had RFK rocking ✅
Power, speed, balance, strength and agility. RIGGO AN ABSOLUTE UNIT!!!
Ahhh... The good ole days!
Ran like a runaway Mack 🚛
For big man, he had a nice burst of speed.
Giants fan..deep respect for the beast riggins
My All-Time backfield: Sweetness, Marcus and The Diesel....since 1977
Scores a touchdown and acts like he’s been there before.
Yes....no dance, no spike, no lining up with a bunch of others doing a celebratory skit that we don't understand or posing for a picture. Just a blue collar worker doing his job.
