Just found this. I miss Steve and Ed Sabol. I miss 70's and 80's football. And all sports from that era really. And the announcers. And the fans. And the music. It's like I'm getting old.
~~ some football fans may forget that when Riggins had his historic 42 yd TD run in SB 17 against Miami in early 1983 - he was an 11 year veteran of the NFL - ( he did sit out one year over a contract dispute ) - but still amazing that he could perform at that level that late in his career - when the average career span for running backs in the NFL is around 3 to 5 yrs ..
I’m a huge Dallas Cowboys fan and watched this diesel run over them multiple times! Pissed me off every time! Much respect to John! What an amazing running back he was! John, you were a great back with a long career. I hated watching you run over my Cowboys! Much respect to you sir!
In DC, probably early to mid 90's, he used to be a guest on the local radio station on Friday nights to talk about that week's Redskins game and hang out. Those guys were perfect with Riggo, and he was hilarious in that, let your hair down environment. It was a must, to tune in every Friday evening, in season.
Riggins was truly a superstar to Redskins fans. He obviously achieved greatness, and he’s very rightfully established in the Hall of Fame, but it doesn’t stop me from thinking of what could have been. He was grievously under utilized in the first decade of his career. Imagine where he could have stood in relation to the greatest running backs of all time if he had been a central figure of those offenses. Thank God, Joe Gibbs realized his potential. One of the coolest guys ever put on a uniform!
John was fun to watch. He might have been like Marcus Allen in the fact that he was lightly used early in his career and that allowed him to play longer. He was a blocking back in his early days in Washington. Either way, he had talent and he was able to keep it going strong in his thirties when most backs are slowing down or finished.
Yeah, Absolutely! I think he is exactly right about the press.. the press will do the interview.. but, they will shape the narrative to their own preferences.

Yep. 😢
Best years, my young years!!!
JR is in a class all by himself! "I'm bored, I'm broke, and I'm BACK!"
I love Riggo...such a character....always makes us smile
Riggo just makes you laugh the entire interview...every interview, and Sabol is just as brilliant...what a duo
Sabol was a smart man. He just goes with the flow here.
John Riggins is a very intelligent man who thinks deeply like me, has a heart of gold, and is tough as nails. God bless him!
You stole my lines. John is Great. Raider Nation!
Too intelligent for the NFL. Really, he showed them something, right or wrong! He showed them what it felt like, because he was that good, that great.
It's amazing to see over the years how much respect The Sabols have gotten from all sports fans. Well deserved.

As a Dolphins fan as a kid, that play still pisses me off! Lol.
It was 4th & 1 if remember right?
My 2nd great skins moment at the time.
Such a great career with the Redskins that you tend to forget he came in with the Jets. I did not realize he played when Nameth was QB.
The world and football needs more people like john and steve
I miss Steve Sabol..
Steve sabot was murdered by the cia
Thanks for the honestly. I certainly remember your play. Reminded me of Larry Csonka …. The power and the difficulty to tackle.
I would love to sit down and talk football with John. Cowboys rivalry, running back life expectancy, and QB pay!
2 legends. 2 Hall of Famers.
Fascinating interview - reveals just how intelligent and nuanced Riggins is...

John Riggins, knew very deeply, that all sports in America are entertainment. And John liked being the central star and, sometimes, the ringmaster.

did u record any?
And play he did.....very intelligent, pragmatic man.
15:15: Can't believe he used the word Mountebanks. That is an oldie.
Lol , my exact thought
Great player and unique personality.
Riggins is probably the truest and most honest ex Nfler interview ever.

Earl Campbell was probably my favorite player of all times. Riggins was actually a similar player, power with speed.

One of a kind.
A great athlete, a great intellect, a great acheiver !
RIGGINS, the Diesel!
a Renaissance man!
Where was this interview conducted? Just wondered.
Other. Than. Earl. Campbell. John was the. Best fullback I. Ever saw
Dan Riley should get credit for changing his mind.
Such a great blue collar team. I think Riggins and Butz were part of the NRA back in those days. Midwestern tough men.
Its. Too bad players today. Dont carry. A. Football. And play. With as. Much pride as. Riggins
The football field is sort of a stage
Can’t believe the Jets let him go? What happened???
a Renaissance man!
Pretty sharp for a Kansas farm boy, don't you think?
ITS NOT THE GAME BUT THE CHASE NOT THE TROPHY BUT THE RACE
Life is great, Football is better.
A weird dude sometimes, but one hell of a running back and a great Redskin #HTTR
Weird? SMH...Get counseling
Thank you for the comment. People over use the word "weird" to smear campaign anyone they don't like
Lol..Riggo stayed cool when sabol confused 6th pick with 6 rd..come on sabol..do ur homework
load the wagon
Cmon Steve...the crying-over-movies question really weak.
