@@user-ro2ci6yv5h so far only laser therapy has been done, they're recommending an mri. But i want to try other things first before going the mri. Doesn't look like she's mixed with anything
It is rough, my gsd was put to sleep on 01/13/24. The hardest part is to see the soul in the failing body. It is the most heart wrenching thing to go thru on this planet, there is no human filter between you and your loved one. My GSD was fine living with stage 3 for 12 months, stage 1 and 2 onset 24 months ago. If your dog has DM walk him her as much as you can, buy a rear hip leg harness and carry him her. What ever you do don't try the new dog arthritis medication, liberal it will knock your dog down and stages 4,5,6 will happen in 8 days. My 13 year old pit mix showed signs of this 6 months ago. She is not in any pain but at the onset I could tell she was confused as to why she couldn’t walk or control her rear legs. She is more accepting of it now and realizes she can run better than walk. (Her rear feet touch the ground at the same time and are only on the ground for seconds so no time to loose balance..YAY). Rear legs cross when walking and she drags knuckles and walks on the top of her rear feet. It breaks my heart. Thank you for this video!
Watching a vibrant dog begin this journey is heartbreaking and cruel. I wish this on nobody. My poor Heidi is progressing quickly through the stages. I know the end is near.

I can tick all the boxes for late stage 3 - stage 4 in my dear old friend - but his tail still occasionally perks up and wags. We are losing Griffin gradually and it is heartbreaking after 14 wonderful years. This is an awful disease. Solidarity with all witnessing their friends suffering.
Thank you for this video. My 16-year-old Labrador mix is in stage 3, and I have been struggling with delusions that I could influence and improve her situation with rehabilitation / exercise. Knowing that I cannot help with her situation makes the course of action clear, intolerable as it is. We will not force her to endure stage 4. Knowing where this awful disease leads is going to help a lot of families come to terms with their final obligation to the furry members of their families.
Thank you for this. My 16 yo Havanese is in stage 3, and your video has given me insight into what to expect. I won’t let him suffer stage 4, as much as I don’t want to let him go. Thanks to all of the pet parents here for sharing your stories and support. I wish you healing in your hearts. 💕
My 12 1/2 yo German Shepherd is also in Stage 3 and also will not let him suffer stage 4. I wish I could give you a hug. He survived Gastric dilatation-volvulus, and this blindsided us. I feel so helpless right now.
This is so helpful; thank you. My labradoodle (11) is starting stage three, though she’s eating well, no loss of functions, still waving her tail and jumping up onto her bed - but her rear legs cross often and she falls over sometimes. It’s utterly heartbreaking but now I feel more confident about knowing when to call it. I don’t want her to suffer.
You must start laser therapy and high doses of B1 vitamin the minute you see the initial signs!!!! I’m with my second GsD with Dm and it’s been a game changer. It’s still progressing but we’ve slowed it to a crawl
My 11 year old mix lab is now entering stage 5. 🥺😢😭 thank you for uploading this video. I now have a better understanding as to how much time I have left with him here in the physical world. Also none of my local vets diagnosed him with DM. I had to research this on my own with his symptoms to find Out what he has.
@@titonothere6179 hope they are not giving cortisone shots. Too many shots is dangerous in the long run. Exactly same our 10 year old foxy has never been officially diagnosed but these stages have all happened in the span of just over a month we are now stage 5 and considering wheels 🛞 husband made some but needs tweeking , im just so surprised how fast this all happened only first sign was her leg swinging slightly sideways when she walked shes has this for year vet said she had a common hip problem i dont feel she did i feel it was stage one
I keep my 14 year old Pit mix as active as she can tolerate. The activity is so good for her physically and emotionally. If she does too much though her back legs give out. I give her a massage every day concentrating on her weakened leg muscles. This is such a devastating, heartbreaking and sad disorder.

I think my dog has begun to develop this condition. I already had a dog called Pebbles who had this and I seeing the signs I did in her as I am in my Dexter. He is 7.6 years old now she started to exhibit symptoms around 8 years. Pebbles did live to 13 years she was nearly at stage 4.

I think my dog is at the start of stage 3, we are 12 months in to when symptoms started x I am a helicopter mum where my dog is concerned so noticed an issue from day one so feel like when I've read 6 months - 3 years I've worried more because I forget that is based on it not being diagnosed untill stages 2-3! He has not started with incontinence yet but everything else you said for stage 3 is him
My 15 year old Labrador Retriever has this…. When we first noticed it we put her on multi vitamin, low dose of cbd (5mg) and started cooking for her. It has extended her life a year or two for sure but she will be put down next week.
Thank you for your instructive video. This helps me think about My mixed breed terrier. She's 11. Active and normal in the beginning of the summer but by the middle of the summer some signs of dysfunction in hind quarters. Now she is dragging one leg behind and barely walks. 180° charge. We have her on prednisone and gabapentin however, I am wary of both. She has all the signs and symptoms of your second to third stage and FCE. I am wondering if you would endorse skipping the MRI and sending her directly into therapy using hydrotherapy and treadmill and other types of professional dog therapies. I'm thinking this couldn't hurt and it could save her and save money. Expensive surgery is not within our means. Thanks, Bruce
Thank you for this information. My 11 year old Pug, Percy is at stage 3 it is not nice to watch him going through this. He wears the balloon like boots for his back feet and I take him a little walk into the field I don't walk him on tarmac. He has had this 2 yrs now, we have a dog buggy when we go to the Lakes. I know he isn't happy but he manages to come out and get some fresh air. I need to put him out regularly as he has lost control of his back passage, we have had a few incidents but not many. He urinated outside as normal so far. It's just sickening to see this little man he looks drunk but he has lots of cuddles and he is still ok at the moment so we enjoy each day together whilst we can.😊
I've started to see some of stage 1 and have been reading up in alternative holistic treatments I can do at home as well.. lions mane mushroom I've read can start to help with the nerves.. im putting this here in case anyone is interested.. im doing massage and reiki on my 7 year old GSD also and lots of omega 3 fatty acids can help with inflammation.. also I made a golden paste with curcumin and coconut oil I put in her food. My 14.5 yr old wolf akabash has been dealing with this for a while. In the fall I tried to get her into the car to the vet, but she couldn't do it. I'm actually grateful now that I know what she has. She has been incontinent for a while. This week she started to walk on her back knuckles that's how I figured it out. I will give her Lion's mane. I have been giving her camelina oil an omega 3 -6 -9 and it definitely seems to help. I will add turmeric back into her diet and a naturopath is coming to the house tomorrow to check her out, mostly just to confirm the diagnosis. It's spring and I am going to try to find ways to get her out to enjoy the lake a bit before things progress too far. She is 130lbs and I cannot lift her so our time is limited... 😢

Thank you so much for this video. I'm almost positive this is what my sweet boy has. By the sounds of it, we're in stage 4 or 5. I've been planning to call the vet to schedule home euthanasia but have been having such a hard time with it all. It's a devastating disease and so heartbreaking to watch. Does anyone know the timeline between stages? I definitely don't want to see him suffocate to death. This all has been too much already 😞.
Two years ago me and my almost 15 year old German shepherd x staffy were exploring the woods, now he can barely stand and I'm facing the harsh reality of having him pts soon. He can walk a short distance when he's up but he falls often. He can still feed and go to the toilet (with occasional accidents) but it's getting harder by the week. He couldn't get up this morning and snapped at my GF when she tried to help him up. He's fallen a few times and has been unable to get up without help. He can't walk far without panting in pain. This no life for him, he loves the great outdoors and chasing squirrels too much.

My chihuahua has a problem walking that the vet doesn’t know what it is. The front paws are 20 degrees out and walking on his wrists. He is 5 years old. This change in his front paws was gradual over 2 years. He is 4 pounds…on prednisone every 2 days for a skin allergy Nyd. Now, 3 weeks he has also begun to walk on the back heels of his paws…the vet said ankles. So, all distal limbs are involved. He walks on grass or any soft surface for about 30 feet to smell, lick grass and do his business…that is all. When the vet did range of movement on him, all the paw joints were loose and the front right paw popped out then put back in. My dog did not squirm or yelp! The vet thought all his ligaments/tendons were over stretched….said it was a possible genetic problem of some sort. My dog Wolfie is not in any pain, great appetite and loves to play. He just cannot walk…..all paws affected…..nails and pads look normal. Do you have any ideas or thoughts and have you ever seen this?
This got my 11 1/2 boxer Ruger. He was put down because we love him like family. We got to stage 3 and called it. It was time. Til we meet again Ruger.
My boy stage 3 I think... got ct scan monday... is it worth putting him thru this or just manage symptoms as no cure anyway 😢so hard to know what to do, he is 14yo shih tzu, stage 5 heart murmur, collapsing treacea ,
My doberman is stage 2. At which stage do you wish you would have put yours down? I’m thinking once he stops the ability to urinate/defecate outside on own.

Our was normal then suddenly stage 5 after running on the park. After 4 months he’s now stage 3 . Is sudden paralysis instead of gradual paralysis the typical way this condition works
according to your steps, we are finishing stage 4 and starting into 5. Louie cannot walk any more, we pick him up and he falls immediately. His front arms seem strong but he just squirms on his pillow. there is no "right" time to let our pets go - we are at 2 years of incontinence and 6 months of urinary incontinence. I feel selfish but I just cant take much more
I have a 16 yr old dachshund who seems to be in stage 3. Not one vet I’ve taken him to has diagnosed him with DM! He’s very thin, but eats more than my pit bull! I’ve been told he has everything from dementia or liver failure to arthritis and dental problems. I’m sure it’s DM-Now I feel like there’s nothing I can do for him, because he wasn’t diagnosed sooner. He still walks -morning is hardest, but in the evening he’s usually doing better. His tail twitches when he’s awake. It’s rhythmic, like a heartbeat. He falls over and I’ve had to put his food and water higher, so he doesn’t step in it. I feel helpless- I wish there was something I could do to help him.
We are at stage 3 and there are good and bad days. Amazon sells some good quality reusable doggy diapers cheap for the occasional accident but mainly to sleep in. They have been a life saver especially the male wraps rather than using the full female ones on him. Good luck everyone, stay strong ❤️
This sounds a lot like what my American Eskimo Dog went through, except he didn't drag his feet and wear on his knuckles. Everything else fits, except this came in waves, improved and got worse progressing gradually until the end. He was eating well right up until the night we put him to sleep. He was going outside with help of a sling. I heard him struggling. He couldn't get up and he was panting very hard. He was turning blue. He looked panicky. I took him to the emergency clinic where he was euthanized. He was nearly 14. Can this disease come and go while gradually getting worse like that? This is the closest description I've seen, but not exact, and I still don't know what his diagnosis was.
Grim, I think my Ricky has this. Ex Bosnian Street dog approx 9 years old. He is probably shepherd Rottie x. He is such a gentleman. My heart is breaking for him ...and me. Awaiting results of mri, bloods , urine and Gene test to see if he is a carrier. Started prednisone tonight.

Our 17.5 year old JRT nearly does the splits on her hind legs when she stands. I help her up and down stairs. She still has a very good appetite. But this affliction will most likely be what will cause us to make the dreaded decision.
In a video from January 2023 of my PWD dog I can see that his hind legs don't have the normal spring in them anymore. Took him to the vet in May 2023 because he had started to walk by moving both legs on the same side back and forth in sync and was a bit wobbly when changing direction - he could still walk relatively well, on uneven forest ground and he was not knuckling normally (only if we had walked alot). The vet did the knuckling test and said that something is wrong with the nerves to the back legs as there is a small delay before correcting the position in both back legs. I can't remember if he could still run a bit at this point. Sometime in the beginning of 2024 he couldn't get up to the second floor without assistance anymore and a couple of months later he needed assistance to get down the stairs as well. Walks became shorter and shorter - we let him decide as we assumed that walking became painful if forced. In June 2024 we went to the vet again and now he actually got the diagnose, DM. Knuckling test showed a much slower response time than last year. He was free to roam the garden and we would take him along to places, but rarely did we go for actual walks or if we went he didn't want to go far. He got some acupuncture treatment and we also did some exercises at home. He could still get up and down the steps on the terrace, but as summer went on it was clear that someone had to ensure that he wouldn't fall on the steps. At some point he couldn't get up on the couch on his own anymore. During the summer he also started to have some poop accidents inside, sometimes it would happen in his sleep, and sometimes he tried to make it outside, but couldn't hold it. His front legs were strong and you could see that they would go faster but the hind legs couldn't keep up. I noticed that he got more concerned if left alone - he wanted to be in the same room. A few weeks ago (in August) I was sitting on a small dock to watch the kids in the water and to my surprise my dog decided to walk on the wobbly dock to come and lay next to me - he could function pretty well but in very short intervals. A week ago he got episodes where his breathing got fast and shallow for a few minutes, then went back to normal. Last Saturday he lost his balance completely, got sick and at the vet he was diagnosed with vestibular syndrome. The vet said that either it will pass in a couple of days or it won't. Instead of putting him through more suffering and struggle, I decided that I would let my tired old boy (he was 13y) rest and he was euthanised. My guess would have been that my dog could have had 2-3 more months before the function in his hind legs would have deteriorated to the point where he can't get up on his own and walking would be really difficult.
@@h.s.9465 thank you so much, this reflects what my dog is experiencing. His breathing has become erratic at times. I have to carry him into the garden to go to the toilet but he’s now almost lost the strength to support himself, definitely on his hind legs, but now his front legs are also far from reliable. Thanks for your response, it’s meant the world to me.
I have a 15 yr old basset who had a large tumor removed from the middle of his back a couple of years ago and has another one growing now on his neck. We noticed the 'drunken sailor' going on a while ago and more recently urinary incontinence. This morning he literally stopped using his legs. it happened very suddenly. I have had three pugs over the years -- all unrelated -- and all three wound up with degenerative myelopathy. Stage one began around age 9. My current pug is now 12 years and is at stage five. It occurred exactly as this video portrayed. Heartbreaking. The dog is mentally unchanged, still enjoys eating, barks at strangers, wants to move, but is unable. He enjoyed a wheelchair for about four months, but now struggles to move it and frequently tips over because his front legs are now weakened.
Am really sorry to say this to you because I know it's such an awful thing to experience & go through but I think it's cruel to keep your dog alive at stage 5 of D.M. I mean what quality of life do they really have? My pug had it & she was only just turned 10 years old, it should have been her 11th birthday today & God I still miss her so much but not suffering from that heartbreaking condition. x

My german shepard had very bad stage 3 ish - 4 ish. He was completely there but breathing, getting up etc was hard. We put him down today because his quality of life was pretty bad. If your dog is in an earlier stage try swimming and physio therapy. Also be prepared to let the dog go. I cried like a little kid and will probably for a long time coming. But i didn't want my best friend to die miserably because i couldn't let go. Good luck.
My 8yr old French bulldog has this and I'm heart broken. He's not in pain and I've made the necessary adjustments for him but it's progressing quickly.. Any advice?
Hi Holly! I’m so sorry about your frenchie, I myself have one. He’s only 4.5 but I’ve noticed a limp in one leg for the last month, he has a vet appt next week. Wondering what your first signs were and how the progressed? I can’t find many accounts of frenchies with DM online.
Did you guys get any update? My Frenchie is also 8 years and he tends to hop on his back legs. I feel like my Frenchie doesn’t have full strength of his legs when standing still but he still loves to run around. Any update on both of your Frenchies?
My Rottweiler is 12 got him at 9 weeks old and now his going though this my heart is broken . He’s already on CBD oil and that helps some but I know he’s very uncomfortable. I’m going to pick up some pain meds today, He looks so sad 😢 I hate to think about the outcome.
DO DOGS LOOSE WEIGHT WHEN THEY HAVE DM? MY PUG IS A SHADOW OF HIS 30 POUND SELF. I'M ALONE EXCEPT MY BABY Pnut. I KNOW HE WOULD BE BETTER OFF PUT TO SLEEP AND I FEEL GREEDY. IT WILL KILL ME TO PUT HIM DOWN BUT IT HAS TO BE DONE. I HOPE THEY PUT ME DOWN WITH HIM!
Yeah, I’m pretty sure this is what my dog has. The vet thinks it’s something else but he started going down on the front left leg. We thought it was a shoulder injury. We took him in, they gave him pain meds and sent him home. Got worse, back to vet, more pain meds and sent home. Stopped walking back to vet, vet thinks it’s and autoimmune disease, got some really expensive meds, and prednisone, sent home. Still no walking called vet, upped the dose. Still no improvement, losing weight looking thin, but still eating and drinking. Will not walk or stand at all. Noticed left side of his body is damn near useless. Called vet again, wanted to give more pain meds, we refused it because he’s not showing any signs of pain. At all. So he re upped his meds again. We will see what happens. So far it’s not doing anything for him at all. I don’t know why to do anymore. I won’t continue to watch him suffer.
My 15 yr old ACD definitely has this - for many months now. However, due to the passing of my long time vet, I took him to a new vet (initially just for more meloxidyl), he convinced us to let him get an injection of Adequan (with follow ups scheduled). This was yesterday - now, he can barely walk at all. He was fine when he went in. Basically at stage two, but still wagging tail, just dragging one foot occasionally, tail was still up and wagging...slight struggle to get up. What is this injection all about? I don't see anything about this as a side effect. Did the vet hit a nerve?
I’m not sure, but I’m thinking my son’s German Shepard may have this. I thought she was just clumsy, but her hind legs shake a lot and she cry’s while trying to take nap, her legs shake while walking also. 💔
I just lost my beautiful 11 year old boxer Mylo on Friday to this terrible disease we had to put him to sleep because he could no longer walk to go to the toilet. He seemed his normal self in January just a little slow but it progressed really quickly with his front paws folding under constantly in the past few weeks and him falling over. Treasure your boxer baby while you have him, part of me has now gone with him.
Had to put our beloved 11yr old boxer boy to sleep in August...never got a definitive diagnosis of what was happening to him. We realise now that it was DM..probably over the last 12 months he began to show symptoms. I wish vets would be more clued up to this illness...his treatment was very hit and miss. It's the hardest decision to euthanize. Miss him every moment of every day 😢

My 7.5 year old GSD is in late stage 2. He is such a wonderful boy. We are devastated.

I'm going thru this now my 10 1/2 year old pit bull / bull terrier mix is on his bed and can't move without pain going to the vet in the morning

Thanks,

Thank you for this information. My 11 year old Pug, Percy is at stage 3 it is not nice to watch him going through this.

Our 17.5 year old JRT nearly does the splits on her hind legs when she stands. I help her up and down stairs. She still has a very good appetite. But this affliction will most likely be what will cause us to make the dreaded decision.
What sort of rough time span on these stages?

DM is 100% genetic. It’s diagnosed via a genetic test.
I may just be paranoid but can 7months old puppies have this disease?
I’m not sure, but I’m thinking my son’s German Shepard may have this. I thought she was just clumsy, but her hind legs shake a lot and she cry’s while trying to take nap, her legs shake while walking also. 💔
In a way. It's genetic. There are tests now to see if your dog or cat carries the gene that can cause this.
@@roxannegarcia8105 Does he exercise enough?
My boxer mix is 10 years old and he is in stage 3. But he can still control his pee.
Seems my 15yr old Pomeranian papillon is in state 2 or 2.5
Take him/her to a chiropractor if you have one for animals near
I’m thinking this is what’s going on with our 12 year old boxer
I just lost my beautiful 11 year old boxer Mylo on Friday to this terrible disease we had to put him to sleep because he could no longer walk to go to the toilet. He seemed his normal self in January just a little slow but it progressed really quickly with his front paws folding under constantly in the past few weeks and him falling over. Treasure your boxer baby while you have him, part of me has now gone with him.
@@garethwhaa7476 😢we just put our 5yr old boxer down it progressed really fast so heartbreaking
