I think my dog has begun to develop this condition. I already had a dog called Pebbles who had this and I seeing the signs I did in her as I am in my Dexter. He is 7.6 years old now she started to exhibit symptoms around 8 years. Pebbles did live to 13 years she was nearly at stage 4.
This is so helpful; thank you. My labradoodle (11) is starting stage three, though she’s eating well, no loss of functions, still waving her tail and jumping up onto her bed - but her rear legs cross often and she falls over sometimes. It’s utterly heartbreaking but now I feel more confident about knowing when to call it. I don’t want her to suffer.
Very helpful, thank you. My 12.5 year old retired racing greyhound slipped back in July '24 when getting off a sofa at a holiday cottage we were staying at and then didn't want to weight bear. I initially assumed it was an ortho injury so did bed rest, Metacam for anti inflammatory and paracetamol for pain relief. Seemed to completely recover. I then noticed that a few weeks later, when he got up from lying on his bed, he was limping and reluctant to weight bear again. I gave him some Metacam and put him in the kitchen on bed rest and he was "back to normal" within 2 hours. We are now in October '24 and this intermittent lameness in his front right leg is happening, on average, twice a week. Each episode isn't prompted by an activity - most often happens after he's been resting on his affected side - then when getting up, he is temporarily lame. He's still flexing his elbow and is bearing a little weight on the leg/foot, but the front right foot appears a bit "floppy" when these episodes happen. He's been backwards and forward to his regular vets who have agreed that it's most likely an issue in the brachial plexus and have prescribed Gabapentin for nerve pain relief, along with paracetamol. He has a regular monthly physio appointment - has done for the last 18 months, following a herniated disc between C5 & C6 back in 2022 - and was under a referral neurologist at the time. They diagnosed the bulging disc, (which affected his front LEFT leg that time), by full MRI scan of brain and spinal cord. Surgery wasn't necessary - a cocktail of drugs (Ketamine, Diazepam, Paracetamol, Prednisolone, Amantadine) and bed rest followed by rehab. he made a full recovery. His physiotherapist also agrees that the issue is in his brachial plexus but because it is so intermittent, she hasn't seen an episode of him being partially non-weight-bearing on the front RIGHT leg/foot - but she doesn't think that it presents like a tumour in his BP would. His regular vet initially thought it was osteosarcoma (very common in retired racers) but is starting to waiver from that diagnosis now and has suggested a tumour on his nerves. She may be right, of course, and has hinted at euthanising him which I'm not in agreement with at present, given that he's still very engaged in life, eating well, keen to go on short walks (he is 12.5 yrs!) and generally seems comfortable and happy. A further MRI isn't really an option for him as to do so would involve giving him a GA and he's probably a little too senior to undergo that now. Any advice would be most welcome. Thank you!
My boy stage 3 I think... got ct scan monday... is it worth putting him thru this or just manage symptoms as no cure anyway 😢so hard to know what to do, he is 14yo shih tzu, stage 5 heart murmur, collapsing treacea ,
I'm letting my boy go day after tomorrow. He's been stage 4 for about two months now. His front legs are getting weak and although he is mentally alert and spunky, I can see sadness in his eyes now, not being able to do what he loves. I'm beside myself with anxiety and second guessing and heartbreak....but my boy is tired. And and deserves peace.
Dreadful disease, my family is trying to decide on when we should put our schnoodle down
Thank you for your instructive video. This helps me think about My mixed breed terrier. She's 11. Active and normal in the beginning of the summer but by the middle of the summer some signs of dysfunction in hind quarters. Now she is dragging one leg behind and barely walks. 180° charge. We have her on prednisone and gabapentin however, I am wary of both. She has all the signs and symptoms of your second to third stage and FCE. I am wondering if you would endorse skipping the MRI and sending her directly into therapy using hydrotherapy and treadmill and other types of professional dog therapies. I'm thinking this couldn't hurt and it could save her and save money. Expensive surgery is not within our means. Thanks, Bruce
Yeah, I’m pretty sure this is what my dog has. The vet thinks it’s something else but he started going down on the front left leg. We thought it was a shoulder injury. We took him in, they gave him pain meds and sent him home. Got worse, back to vet, more pain meds and sent home. Stopped walking back to vet, vet thinks it’s and autoimmune disease, got some really expensive meds, and prednisone, sent home. Still no walking called vet, upped the dose. Still no improvement, losing weight looking thin, but still eating and drinking. Will not walk or stand at all. Noticed left side of his body is damn near useless. Called vet again, wanted to give more pain meds, we refused it because he’s not showing any signs of pain. At all. So he re upped his meds again. We will see what happens. So far it’s not doing anything for him at all. I don’t know why to do anymore. I won’t continue to watch him suffer.
You must start laser therapy and high doses of B1 vitamin the minute you see the initial signs!!!! I’m with my second GsD with Dm and it’s been a game changer. It’s still progressing but we’ve slowed it to a crawl
wow really? What does Laser Theapy cost? Do you use regulur B1 vitamin?
Thank you so much for this video. I'm almost positive this is what my sweet boy has. By the sounds of it, we're in stage 4 or 5. I've been planning to call the vet to schedule home euthanasia but have been having such a hard time with it all. It's a devastating disease and so heartbreaking to watch. Does anyone know the timeline between stages? I definitely don't want to see him suffocate to death. This all has been too much already 😞.
We are at stage 3 and there are good and bad days. Amazon sells some good quality reusable doggy diapers cheap for the occasional accident but mainly to sleep in. They have been a life saver especially the male wraps rather than using the full female ones on him. Good luck everyone, stay strong ❤️
according to your steps, we are finishing stage 4 and starting into 5. Louie cannot walk any more, we pick him up and he falls immediately. His front arms seem strong but he just squirms on his pillow. there is no "right" time to let our pets go - we are at 2 years of incontinence and 6 months of urinary incontinence. I feel selfish but I just cant take much more
My GSD used to always do that same “lazy sit” with her legs out to the sides like a frog 😄 She had OFA Good hips.
Thank you for this. My 16 yo Havanese is in stage 3, and your video has given me insight into what to expect. I won’t let him suffer stage 4, as much as I don’t want to let him go. Thanks to all of the pet parents here for sharing your stories and support. I wish you healing in your hearts. 💕
My 12 1/2 yo German Shepherd is also in Stage 3 and also will not let him suffer stage 4. I wish I could give you a hug. He survived Gastric dilatation-volvulus, and this blindsided us. I feel so helpless right now.
@@porkchop7916 sending you a virtual hug right back.
I'm letting my girl go day after tomorrow. DM is now affecting her front legs. It's so sad. It's torture for us all.
I have watched my beautiful s huskie struggle that now seems like he had D M . He lasted 13 years although his back legs were shaking since he was very young . Near the end of his life charging vegan wetting himself especially during the night and drank so much water day and night his pure white coat was stained with urine and he mostly vomited and Pooh’d often he couldn’t control his toilet . The urine he passed was incredible all his new beds after 1 day were soaked even with waterproof sheets . Then he just couldn’t get up his back leg looked paralysed then he was getting frustrated then he was crying out more often . On the 26 June 2024 I had to make the decision to get Charlie put to sleep on his bed at home with us all beside him and his pup who is now 8 and starting to show symptoms more now . I’m trying to figure out if I should get junior a brace on his hind legs ? Charlie was on yumove for a long time but in the end nothing helped him I also gave him paracetamol most days from the vet . Any advise to help his pup also male will be appreciated .
Thank you
This materiał was very useful for us. Thank you very much. I had Border Collie adopted from puppy mill with this desease. She get sick when she was 1 year and 4 months old but she she lived 5 more years and lived to be 6 years old. Fighting and struggling for everyday. Thank you for your films. ❤That was very useful and Iit helped to understand her struggle and the problems of particular stages of the disease especially with breathing.
What sort of rough time span on these stages?
In a video from January 2023 of my PWD dog I can see that his hind legs don't have the normal spring in them anymore. Took him to the vet in May 2023 because he had started to walk by moving both legs on the same side back and forth in sync and was a bit wobbly when changing direction - he could still walk relatively well, on uneven forest ground and he was not knuckling normally (only if we had walked alot). The vet did the knuckling test and said that something is wrong with the nerves to the back legs as there is a small delay before correcting the position in both back legs. I can't remember if he could still run a bit at this point. Sometime in the beginning of 2024 he couldn't get up to the second floor without assistance anymore and a couple of months later he needed assistance to get down the stairs as well. Walks became shorter and shorter - we let him decide as we assumed that walking became painful if forced. In June 2024 we went to the vet again and now he actually got the diagnose, DM. Knuckling test showed a much slower response time than last year. He was free to roam the garden and we would take him along to places, but rarely did we go for actual walks or if we went he didn't want to go far. He got some acupuncture treatment and we also did some exercises at home. He could still get up and down the steps on the terrace, but as summer went on it was clear that someone had to ensure that he wouldn't fall on the steps. At some point he couldn't get up on the couch on his own anymore. During the summer he also started to have some poop accidents inside, sometimes it would happen in his sleep, and sometimes he tried to make it outside, but couldn't hold it. His front legs were strong and you could see that they would go faster but the hind legs couldn't keep up. I noticed that he got more concerned if left alone - he wanted to be in the same room. A few weeks ago (in August) I was sitting on a small dock to watch the kids in the water and to my surprise my dog decided to walk on the wobbly dock to come and lay next to me - he could function pretty well but in very short intervals. A week ago he got episodes where his breathing got fast and shallow for a few minutes, then went back to normal. Last Saturday he lost his balance completely, got sick and at the vet he was diagnosed with vestibular syndrome. The vet said that either it will pass in a couple of days or it won't. Instead of putting him through more suffering and struggle, I decided that I would let my tired old boy (he was 13y) rest and he was euthanised. My guess would have been that my dog could have had 2-3 more months before the function in his hind legs would have deteriorated to the point where he can't get up on his own and walking would be really difficult.
@@h.s.9465 thank you so much, this reflects what my dog is experiencing. His breathing has become erratic at times. I have to carry him into the garden to go to the toilet but he’s now almost lost the strength to support himself, definitely on his hind legs, but now his front legs are also far from reliable. Thanks for your response, it’s meant the world to me.
This sounds a lot like what my American Eskimo Dog went through, except he didn't drag his feet and wear on his knuckles. Everything else fits, except this came in waves, improved and got worse progressing gradually until the end. He was eating well right up until the night we put him to sleep. He was going outside with help of a sling. I heard him struggling. He couldn't get up and he was panting very hard. He was turning blue. He looked panicky. I took him to the emergency clinic where he was euthanized. He was nearly 14. Can this disease come and go while gradually getting worse like that? This is the closest description I've seen, but not exact, and I still don't know what his diagnosis was.
Is there any pain present in early stages of dm . My dog is going through extreme pain in his hind legs and cannot stand up my vet said he has osteoarthritis along with dm .i m confused if he has dm or not as dm does not cause pain as i heard. Please enlighten me about it.
O really? My dogs been alive with it and paralyzed for 18 months now and no signs of him dieing whatsoever and he was stage 4 at the time.thats b.s. its called dog wheelchair. Hes probably been a stage 3 for a long time and not sure he will advance but hes still here.
My American Staffordshire had to be put down yesterday 😢 He was at stage five and its so hard to say goodbye too! This came super fast his stages.
My boxer is at stages 2- 3.
Dr. John, aka Dog Doc, Thank You. I can't afford to take our J-Lynn to get these tests done. I thought, like most, that it was hip dysplasia; but then it got worse w the knuckling. Then falling and dragging. I JUST found your channel. Now I KNOW, w/out a doubt, it's DM. She's definitely in stage 3 closing in on stage 4. I'm SO glad to know that it's painless. I've been giving her a combo of gabapentin and tramadol when I can find it. Thank you so much for your vids. God bless you and your team. Now I get to figure out how to make her a wheelchair...
I am giving Caneva, small scoop, in the AM to my two small Chi mix elderly dogs, one who has Cushings and in the evening, a half scoop of Myos. It is hard to tell if they are helping, but the dog with Cushings seems to show some better muscle control of his belly. They have been on it for a year.
Thank you for this video
Has anyone else experienced a lot of panting as he mentioned?
Yes, most definitely. Our boy did a lot of panting.
@@erinblythe7497 thank you!!! Any chance you noticed it WAY before discovering it was DM? Did it get worse as he progressed in stages? If I'm asking too much or it's bothersome... I totally understand. I honestly have been thrown to the wolves in all the years I brought my shepherd in for questioning
@@ke2159 No it was not the first signs. Zac's first signs were back leg weakness, he was happy enough for over a year. The panting was in the end. That and pacing and then he would fall over. It progressed fast in the end. The vet said he had something wrong with his lungs and was due for xray on the Monday. We made the decision a week ago on Saturday to give him some peace and have him put to sleep. Couldn't put him through any more distress. He was a Huntaway/Lab cross so one of the breeds susceptible. Hope this helps.
This got my 11 1/2 boxer Ruger. He was put down because we love him like family. We got to stage 3 and called it. It was time. Til we meet again Ruger.
😢
I am really sorry to all the pet owners here who endured this for their child. I wish our pets lived perfectly and passed perfectly. :'( Stay strong everyone. You gave a wonderful life to your buddy, that's what's important to remember
I would like to be able to properly express my GSD bladder but having a tough time.
Man,I have a female pit bull of 13 years and she has always been full active..💖walking about 8-10 kilometers every other days or so..This came on so suddenly I am still in shock. Her mother had it too 😔We also have accidents, she'll pee in her bed while chilling or sleeping..and she drinks a LOT I mean constant water. Don't know if these are related..but the abruptedness of it all is...ouffff 😔😔 Take Care All 🌈💚💜✨🌺
Doesn’t sound like DM. Just old age incontienance.
I can tick all the boxes for late stage 3 - stage 4 in my dear old friend - but his tail still occasionally perks up and wags. We are losing Griffin gradually and it is heartbreaking after 14 wonderful years. This is an awful disease. Solidarity with all witnessing their friends suffering.
How long between stage 3/ 4 and him dying, if you don’t mind me asking 😢 my dog is there now it happened so fast

Black and dark skin should use how many times higher dose than white skin? How many times higher dose will be used for black and dark hair than for white hair? Thank you!
My boxer is in stage 4. She can’t walk at all and we got a wheelchair for her for when she eats. She doesn’t love the it but it’s been a big help. She scoots her way around the house and is in very good spirits. It’s so hard because her mind and joy are there, she just cant walk. Recently we noticed she’s having trouble in her front right leg. When she can no longer sit up or scoot I know I’ll have to put her down. I dread the day. She’s my girl.
Moving to stage 3 now. Time to say goodbye soon. My heart goes out to anyone going through this ❤
I'm going thru this now my 10 1/2 year old pit bull / bull terrier mix is on his bed and can't move without pain going to the vet in the morning
It is rough, my gsd was put to sleep on 01/13/24. The hardest part is to see the soul in the failing body. It is the most heart wrenching thing to go thru on this planet, there is no human filter between you and your loved one. My GSD was fine living with stage 3 for 12 months, stage 1 and 2 onset 24 months ago. If your dog has DM walk him her as much as you can, buy a rear hip leg harness and carry him her. What ever you do don't try the new dog arthritis medication, liberal it will knock your dog down and stages 4,5,6 will happen in 8 days. I am waiting to join the class action law suit against the manufacture of this drug.
So sorry for both of you 🙏🏻

Thank you for elaborating on this disease in such awesome detail and breaking down the stages. I cant believe how fast this has progressed with our 14 year old Shih Tzu, Princess Maya Marie. To my disbelief, Maya was already in stage 3 when they diagnosed her but that was yesterday (Jan 4th 2024). Six days ago; Saturday Dec. 30th 2023 Princess Maya unexpectedly very suddenly started having issues walking and keeping balance. Also, Maya would fall over every time she did the "dry doggy shake" (like she's shaking off water.) I did not understand what stage our girl was but your video cleared that right up. Maya is at the fecal defecit stage so considering how fast this has progressed for her I do not think she is going to make it until monday when she sees the vet agian. Thank you Dr. John & Veterinary Teaching Academy.
Thanks Dr. John! How often during the week do you suggest having the dog perform these exercises? And is there a recommended set and rep range?
I like to know if it would work for my dog that is in stage 5 heart disease to treat him with this light therapy?
How do you know when to let go? What if they still have an appetite, alertness but bedridden?
That's the dilemma I'm facing right now. My dog wants to play and still eats and is for the most part his normal goofy self. He is rapidly losing use of his hind legs and has a hard time breathing I just feel so bad for him. I hope to make a decision on what to do soon and pray that whatever I do is right😢
@@ellyscrafts1999 I’m so sorry to hear that you’re going through this with your dog. It’s such a horrible disease and just heartbreaking. Hugs and prayers to you and your pup.

I am not sad that I let him go. it was the least I could do for someone that was my best friend his entire life. There's no dignity left once you can't walk or do what you love to do. I will always love my Mello and keep him close in my heart and memories ♥️
@@ellyscrafts1999 I’m so sorry for your loss. 🥹 It’s heartbreaking and as much as it is difficult to let go we owe it to them. He’ll be forever in your heart and memories. Take care and heal one day at a time. Hugs 💕

The video, which is over an hour long, is not specifically about myosin muscle formula, but rather focuses on a commercial product for canine muscle building and health. Dr. John Waterhouse, the presenter, discusses his personal experience with the product and its variations, including the original formula, a veterinary strength version, a green-lipped mussel version, and a feline version. He explains how the product works, its effects on muscle building through the mTOR pathway, and its impact on reducing myostatin levels in the body, which can inhibit muscle growth. The supplement's main component is Fortetropin, a fertilized chicken egg yolk powder. Throughout the video, Dr. Waterhouse shares results from his three-and-a-half-month trial of the product with his own pets and patient pets. He emphasizes the importance of proper dosage, gradual introduction, and monitoring pets for changes in muscle mass, body condition, and overall health. Thank you for this video. It gave me peace of mind that I called it at stage three.

Is there a class iv laser you recommend for at home use?
Which supplements?
Thank you. This helps with the family processing what is happening and how we will plan what our plan will be for our pet. Appreciate it your help in this hard time.
My pup had this and they thought he would need amputation. I did physio with him and now he can use his leg but his shoulder muscles are weak and he starts limping after excercise. Do I get him a brace? If so so I get it for his shoulder or his wrist or both?
Can you still buy this item???
Wondering the same. Also is there a newer or better one since the video that they reconmend more?
I just figured out My 13 yr old Pomeranian has had this for about 2-3 yrs but her front paws would not always stand up straight. But that got better and I walked her a lot and she go up and down the steps OK. Until this year she developed very wobbly weak, hind legs and that’s what made me start looking online to see what could be the problem. Now I think she’s had stage to all year and it rapidly moved to stage three and four. Now she’s in continent. I’m gonna have to get her a little doggy wheelchair so she can get around. I didn’t know what was wrong with her because she would suddenly just plop to the floor and not be able to move and then I would hear her whimpering, but I don’t think she’s really in pain although I could be wrong. The thing to watch out for though is urinary infections because they lose control of their bladder. I’m not sure what to do because it looks like she still got labored breathing. Whenever I put my dogs to sleep in the past, I never could get over it. But when they just die in my arms, I feel peaceful with them. This is breaking my heart, and I almost don’t wanna work or leave the house.
My dog went through this. It came on very fast. It was heartbreaking 😢😢😢😢 he ended up dying. My heart is broken. I miss him so much
