My 11 year old Boxer was diagnosed with DM a few months ago. Weakness and stumbling in rear right leg. Our trusted vet prescribed Aminocaporic acid and Vitamin E. Ali has been on these medications for a few months. The condition is worsening. Hock braces help a bit. We know that as time goes by, the disease will take over. Not looking forward to that time. Ali is so full of energy and silliness. I love my Ali-boo so much. Thank you for the informational video and a chance to share Ali's story.

My 8 year old Great Dane has this disease and I found this video to be very informative. The supplements part and the acupressure points in particular helped...along with knowing my boy is not feeling pain makes a huge difference. One extra thing I have been doing which seems to help tremendously is fill a long hot water bottle up and place it along his spine while he rests. When I don't use the moist heat treatment for a few days I notice him begin to not being able to hold up his hind legs and he falls over a lot...but when I do the heat treatment once a day he seems much better. And he loves it...during his treatment he sighs a lot and seems to really love it.

Hi. I have a 7.5 year old Great Dane who I think has DM. All the classic initial signs are there. We have neurology appt scheduled this week. May I ask how your Dane is doing since you made this comment 3 months ago?

@@meredith7643 the DM is getting worse and he is basically laying around most days now. He has trouble standing at his bowl and can just get out to relieve himself. His legs are so far gone that he can't get in the right position to poo so we have to wipe him everytime now. It is only a matter of time before we have to let him go. We are waiting until the day he can't get up to stand. We have a grave dug for him and have the vet on call to come to our house when that happens. It is heart breaking as he still has all of his other facilties. He still loves his food and wags his tail and gives the paw. Although he was very lazy before all of this. He no longer can have his walkies which he so loved. We live on a hill and he can't maneuver his legs to get down the hill. We also have plastic under hist matress and ours just in case he pees. Which he has done so 5 times this month. Also washing a lot of bedding and blankets because of in continence and he can't control his poo either.

Assuming he's heaven now. It's been a year. We are now going through what you did. It'll may be any day now. Can u say what was something that helped you get through it after his passing? This pain is crippling.

@Honest Review so sorry to hear what you are going through...its not easy letting them go...we ended up waiting until the moment he could no longer get comfortable...I remember the last night in particular where he was in obvious pain...he tried to turn and he couldn't...he just stared at me and what I felt was him saying...mom let me go...I told him he wouldn't have to go through this anymore and that mommy would take care of it soon...was the hardest thing I ever had to do was to call the vet and organise him to come out to our house to put him down...we spent the day with him...mu husband dug his grave just outside near his area where he ran and played...he cooked him up 2 steaks...fed him well...and we stayed with him while the vet did his thing...afterwards we wrapped him in his blanket and buried him...was the worst thing we had to do...since then we created a flower bed over his grave an placed a ceramic set of doves on his grave...my husband took paw castings of his two front paws and he created a memorial plack for us to hang and he painted a picture of him...I placed the canvas painting of our boy up over his bed near where he slept in our bedroom and still to this day fee like he is still with us...we still miss him...but we had to move on...as he was never going to return to us...we ended up getting another little guy...a labradoodle this time....he has brought a new energy into our home...

Dr Jones... My GSD has demonstrated symptoms of DM for about 2 years... three days ago her rear legs began to cross and her balance is severely decreased and she has begun falling! Her right rear has always been her worst leg...but oddly enough her proprioception in the left rear (which was fairly good) is completely non existent! She stands on her knuckles without trying to right then! Emotionally, this is so hard for both of us! Her supplementation has been good , but I will add curcumin and more alpha lipolic acid... She has always had autoimmune issues...thank you for this video! I am a SUBSCRIBER!!!

Hello Dr. I have a 15 yr old ACD who definitely has degenerative myelopathy for many months now. When I needed to take him to a new vet for more Meloxidyl (my long time vet passed away), he decided to give him an injection of Adequan instead with a course of additional injections to come. My issue is that since he got home, his right back leg (the one that was injected), he doesn't walk right - tipping over, just lying down, swinging that leg out when he does walk. Much WORSE than when he went in. Is this normal?? I am heartbroken. He for sure has had the DM for quite a while (obvious)... but was comfortable and happy and playful. Why the injection??? I have a call into the vet ... but I would love your opinion. I've never heard of this treatment for DM. (note: I had covid, so I could not be the one who took him in, and I approved the treatment when I wasn't there...)

Hi Dr. Andrews I think you would really enjoy learning more about essential oils and how to properly dilute therapeutic EO's. If you have this knowledge then I would like to see a video about how to make a flea spray and collar. I would like to know how to properly pick up my three dachshunds. Person question my vet said it was time to put one of my dogs in a wheelchair. I feel that the vet didn't believe me that she still walks all over the yard. It just takes her 15 mins to decide to stand up. She has problems with her back left leg and I realize she has back problems. How likely is it that chiropractic care could help her with placement and possibly avoiding the wheelchair? Also, I would like information about dog and cat gut bacteria the actual scientific names to look for and how to supplement enzymes when unable to completely remove kibble. Thank you for making these videos.

Hi. my 8 year old shitzu-poodle female was fine one day - and the next day not. Vet said the xrays show degenerative arthritis, however, it happened literally overnight which leads me to believe that it wasn't degenerative at all. Not sure if its degenerative myelopathy either but she is showing all the signs; once up and about - can walk like a racehorse. But getting up after lying down, the back legs not working and she is lifting her hind legs as if she's stepping on something hot. most of the time she just sits back down or drags the bottom part of her body. Any suggestions? Pinched nerve maybe. Thank you for all you information.

Thanks so much for this video. My precious Bella(My world) is 14 and has had leg weakness coming on for a few years. She’s had joint tablets, omega 369 and turmeric for about 7 years but now her legs are very wobbly and she has some knuckling. She can run better than walk but my vet said to stop this as it is speeding up the process. She has back muscle loss but this has been improving with regular short walks. She has relied on her front legs but these are getting stiff and she is lame sometimes. My vet thinks arthritis or hip dysplasia but I think maybe degenerative myelopathy. She is sensitive to touch though anywhere on her body. I massage her a lot and this helps. She is on previcox permanently now and had bloods done to check for liver, kidney damage. Sorry for long post but I’m going to try this Alfa lipoid acid and 95% curcuminoids. Are these specifically for dog supplements or can she have human ones? I always give her dog supplements but read these can be quite weak strengths? Oh and she has a green lipped muscle supplement. Love watching your videos and how you help many of us with our babies problems.

      Hi, see below
      DEGENERATIVE MYELOPATHY
      SIGNS
Degenerative myelopathy is a disease of unknown cause that affects the spinal cord. It shows up as ataxia, or a loss of coordination of the hind legs. It progresses to weakness and then to paralysis of the back legs. This is a common disease of German Shepherds, and many people think that their dog has Hip Dysplasia. In the later stages, you will see your dog dragging his feet (knuckling) - and ultimately, paralysis. It is non-painful.
      CAUSES
The cause is unknown, but this is an autoimmune disorder. In this case your dog’s own immune system attacks his spinal cord, and the structures in the spinal cord degenerate. The myelin (the insulation around the nerve fibers) and the axons (the nerve fibers that carry signals to the muscles) are affected. There are definite genetic factors, as this is most common in German Shepherd Dogs, although it has been seen in all medium to large breed dogs.
      SOLUTIONS
ADDITIONAL DIAGNOSTICS. Rule out Hip Dysplasia, and a Disc Prolapse with X-Rays. An MRI will confirm this disease, but won’t help with treatment.
REGULAR EXERCISE. This helps maintain muscle tone, and improve blood flow and circulation to the muscles of the back legs. Start with 10 minutes every other day, and slowly increase it, working up to 30 minute walks. The important thing is to exercise regularly, and rest your dog after a more vigorous workout. Some can be increased to daily exercise, while others remain at every other day. Swimming is a great option if you have water available.
      DIET:
This is a big cause of the disease, so it is important to remove any of the potential allergens that cause further spinal cord degeneration. Dr. R. M. Clemens, a specialist in dogs with Degenerative Myelopathy, has developed a specific non-reactive, nutrient filled diet he believes can help. Soy is added because it is rich in flavonoids - ingredients which may decrease the immune damage to the spine. Additional nutrients include garlic and ginger. Both are added for their anti-inflammatory ability, and the immune boosting parts of garlic.
Basic diet: (based upon 1 serving size for 30-50 pounds body weight):
2 oz Boneless Pork Center Loin Chop (boiled, baked or fried in olive oil)
      4 oz Tofu (soybean curd)
8 oz Long Grain Brown Rice (3 oz cooked in 6 oz water)
2 tsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
      ¼ cup Molasses
2 Whole Carrots (boiled and then cut up)
      1 cup Spinach (cooked)
4 tbsp Green Bell Pepper (chopped and steamed)
4 Broccoli Spears (boiled and then cut up)
This diet (1 serving for 30-50 pounds body weight) provides approximately 1160-1460 calories per serving. You can substitute poultry meats, beef and lamb for the pork chop. This will alter the composition slightly, mainly by added additional fat. The weight of meat is based upon boneless weight. Most of the items can be prepared in a microwave. Based upon your dog's body weight, you will need to make more or less. For example, if your dog weighs 80 pounds, multiply all the ingredients by 1.5 (can be as high as 2.5 times, though), keeping their relative proportions. You can also make this portion of the diet in advance, aliquot it into appropriate quantities and freeze it for later use. Just before feeding time, remove the diet from the freezer and thaw in hot (or boiling) water or microwave to defrost. To complete the diet, add (amount per serving) before serving:
      1 tsp Dry Ground Ginger
      2 Raw Garlic Cloves (crushed)
      ½ tsp Dry Mustard
      1 tsp Bone Meal
Using the above diet, approximately 1 serving equals 1 can of commercial dog food. The exact requirements for your dog can be approximated by substituting the diet on that basis. You should weigh your dog each week, if losing weight, increase the amount of the diet given. If gaining weight, cut back on the amount given.
B VITAMINS. These help in regenerating nerves, and will do no harm. Get a quality B Vitamin Complex, giving 100 mg twice daily to an average 80 lb German Shepherd.
THE SUPPLEMENT CONNECTION. Fatty Acid supplements are very helpful in decreasing the level of inflammation. Omega 3 fatty acids are most important. You must give a high enough dose in order for it to be effective, and the ideal dose is 1000 mg per 10 lbs of body weight daily. A great, inexpensive source for dogs is flax oil; give 1 tablespoon per 50 lbs.
ANTIOXIDANTS. Vitamin E and Vitamin C may help: the Vitamin E dose is 100 IU per 10 lbs of body weight once daily; the Vitamin C dose is 100 mg per 10 lbs of body weight once daily. Selenium is another antioxidant which can be added in conjunction with these vitamins. The dose: 20 ug per 10 lbs daily.
      HERBAL:
GINKGO BILOBA. Has been found to be effective in improving cognitive function in people with certain mental diseases. It increases profusion of blood and oxygen delivery to parts of the brain (cerebrum); give 1 drop of the tincture per lb of body weight twice daily.
GREEN TEA. It is a great general tonic, and it may help decrease spinal cord inflammation. Give 1 capsule twice a day - or 1 cup per day of tea.
GRAPE SEED EXTRACT. Noted for its anti-inflammatory benefits, it may help in the spinal cord. It decreases free radical damage. The dose is 1 capsule (50 mg) per day for a 75 lb dog.
BROMELAIN AND CURCUMIN. These are additional anti-inflammatory herbs which also modulate the immune system. They work together, and increase the absorption of each nutrient when given in combination. A typical dose is 100 mg of Bromelain and 100 mg of Curcumin per 20 lbs daily. You can get these in combination at a natural health food store.
      HOMEOPATHIC:
      For paralysis or back injury.
NUX VOMICA. Most specifically for back pain, such as prolapsing discs and spondylosis. This is meant as an acute treatment. Dose 6C every 4-6 hours for 3-5 days.
RHUS TOX. Pain or stiffness when getting up, and most muscle pains/disorders. Dose 6C twice daily.
PULSATILLA. For more acute injuries. Dose 30C every 4-6 hours for 2-3 days.
SILICA. For hip dysplasia, elbow arthritis, spinal disorders (spondylosis). The typical dose and schedule is 6C once daily for 4 weeks, and then evaluate effectiveness.
DR. CLEMENS COCKTAIL. “Over the last 2 decades, we have found two medications which appear to prevent progression or result in clinical remission of DM (Degenerative Myelopathy) in many (up to 80%) of the patients. These medications are aminocaproic acid (EACA) and n-acetylcysteine (NAC). We recommend giving EACA as a solution, using the generic product. This product, while designed for injection, can be mixed with chicken broth to provide a palatable solution for oral usage. We mix 2 parts of aminocaproic acid solution (250 mg/ml) with 1 part chicken broth and give 3 ml of this mixture orally every 8 hours. An alternative source for EACA is to have a compounding pharmacy make the solution from chemical grade EACA. One such pharmacy is WestLab Pharmacy in Gainesville, FL. The only side effects that have been attributed to EACA have been occasional gastrointestinal irritation. This presents a problem only in a few patients, usually who have pre-existing GI problems that the medication might exaggerate. A local pharmacist can help in determining whether any additional drugs might be contra-indicated or lead to possible drug-interactions with the recommended therapy. The only known interaction is with estrogen compounds; but, only in high doses.”

I'm not entirely sure if my German shepard has this condition because it happened so rapidly. He started to limp when we came home from a walk Saturday(2/23) when we were caught in a rain shower and i took him to an emergency clinic Sunday(2/24) night and he can barely walk on his hind legs only a few feet before stopping and lying down. They couldn't find anything in the xrays, they gave him a physical and said he may have pulled something and prescribed us Methocarbamol and Carprofen. He's only 4 years old so i was confused and worried because this happened over a course of 3 days. He is hyperactive, always running and jumping which he was doing on Friday, but today he can't bare to walk. He is uncomfortable with me trying to assist him as he uses the bathroom. Hi Dr Jones I have a 12 year old Dog She has severe allergies to all proteins I have seen a Holistic Vet here in Ottawa and he says he has never seen in his career a dog who has severe allergies to animal protein ? So I have to order her food from the US and it is all vegetarian and do compensate with a few kibbles of a vegetarian protein from the Vet . My dog has started showing signs of DM shes very quiet now her leg started twitching at 5 am this morning in bed and she wasnt sure how to react ... she got off the bed and did it again on the carpet her hind leg sweeps backwards . So what i am asking is your professional opinion on what should i give her as a natural supplement to help I saw your video on Honey i will try it in a minimal dose she vomits milk, eggs, fish, meat gets bloody ears her paws are all bloody as well i have these very expensive topical sprays and venectyl P which is so bad for her health and also she has thyroid issues on meds for that as well but this been an ongoing thing for 11 years of her life. All these remedies would be great if i could incorporate them . So which in your opinion would be best to start with.

He doesn't appear to be in any pain. He wants to walk badly even though his body is no longer cooperating. My dog has become incontinent and the DM seems to be progressing into his vocal cords. I have a 14 year old Chihuahua that started buckling her back legs. 3 months later, now, she can only drag her back legs. Should she be put down?

Hi, That is a hard decision including quality of life. Now may be the time, but discuss options with your veterinarian, asking them the specific diagnosis.

I was wondering about if this is a deathly disease for the dog? Will my dog die from this? Or no ? Will he just become unresponsive with his back legs only? Or is this something that will happen to all his legs?

It progresses at varying rates Patty. Eventually my dog lost the ability to walk, but it took several years

Thank you for getting back to me. It helped a little. But didn't answer my question. Will he only just loose his ability to walk or will he loose his life eventually? Thanks for your help. I have been coming to your channel for most info on my animals. Your awesome to do this channel for us all. God Bless you.

      Hi,
My suggestion is a higher protein easy to digest food- he needs as much muscle mass as possible

My 11 year old Boxer has DM, and about a year ago, I started feeding her baked chicken (sometimes breasts, sometimes thighs) and baked sweet potatoes. I cut the chicken and sweet potatoes into bit sized pieces, pour the chicken juices and everything else into a mixing bowl and mix it all together. I make about enough for 1 week and keep it in the fridge. She loves it, of course. She enjoys every meal and it is definitely keeping her stronger than kibble. Some may waive fingers at me for this, but I am also giving her a 15mg daily dose of Cannabidiol oil (CBD oil). It is one of the non-psychoactive (meaning, it will not get your dog "high") cannabinoids found in the Cannabis plant. You can buy it legally and many health food stores carry it. Studies in humans with ALS, which is very similar to DM, have suggested that it can slow the progression of the disease. My girl has been taking it for about 6-8 months now, and although I have no way to compare, I do believe it may have helped to slow the progression of the DM. The father of my dog also had DM. He was not treated with CBD and he went downhill in a matter of a few months. Again, no real way to compare without good hard medical data of its effectiveness, but if there are no negative side effects and there is a chance it will work, I will take it. Anyhow, I see your post was from 10 months ago, and if my guess is right, I am terribly sorry for what you and your dog have gone through. Our dogs are little angels that touch our lives in such a special way, and it is so painful to see them go through this. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

My puppy started showing DM-like symptoms since we got him at 2 months. He just turned a year old and is completely incontinent, x-rays and bloodwork are normal. We're unfortunately having him put to sleep on Monday.
I can't find any information about this occurring in puppies. Perhaps ours are just very unlucky?

Dr. Jones, I just watched your segment. Very informative. My dog is 10 yrs old Husky and notice her legs are giving out. She has been to the vet. test have been run. I still dont have a definitive answer. she was on a steroid and antibiotic. after taking the medication for 2 weeks notice she was drinking an awful lot of water and urinating . having accidents in the house. I took her back and now she is on amoxicillian and baytril. There are days she seems very happy little more perked up. today she is laying around and not walking like the other day actually slipped and sat at end of stair in garage. I really think she has this DM. at first they though spinal meningitis. Im concerned and eager to get the b12 , flax oil and other items you mentioned. I also thought of putting her on glucosamine. I just know in humans you have to take that for a long time before it helps. Could you please advise. Thank you Lisa

      Hi Lisa,
I would first discuss this with your veterinarian. You are right in that meningitits is very rare, and DM is more common. You can discuss using alternative anti-inflammatories, along with short term traditional NSAID

It is painful to them. My girl showed a communicator that it felt like her limbs had fallen asleep and were trying to come back. Im in a DM group where others said their dogs have chewed off their toes/feet because of the pain.
