Took a week's vacation to play this and so far I'm about 5 hours in, and it has exceeded all expectations. I'm shocked so far how true the environments even are to the original, they didn't take any shortcut. If I had to say anything bad, I would say the game is so good, it's very hard to go back to the 2 and 3 remakes. While I like them both for different reasons, the thing is that they are both so short and linear, that the RE4 remake makes them feel like a tech demo because it's literally 5 times the game. They said Mercenaries Mode will also be coming as a free update. This game is going to stay in my system for about 6 months just like when the original came out, because I didn't remove it until I finished it about 20 times. This time it could be more.
Playing the opening hours my only visual dissapointment is the distant terrain. It is muddy and quite low fidelity. Could have used a matte painting pass or higher res bakes to simulate distant scattering of vegetation like forests or shrubbery. It continues to be a lacking area in a few games as game dev artists seem to rely too heavily on terrain erosion heightfields and using them raw in game with only a colour map and normals to define it's detail. I would suggest taking a more VFX Film pipeline where assets such as these are treated as a 'matte paintings' which would tie into the high quality foreground levels a lot better.
I wish they would have added a dodge mechanic as well like in RE3 remake, I’ve been playing Witcher 3 so as I started playing RE4 last night I keep pressing B expecting to dodge lol
They just replaced the crosshair with a glowing red dot, and the dot doesn't even sync with the barrel's movement or even recoil. Plus it is only available for 2 pistols.

"El Gigante" since it is a spanish name the pronunciation should be in the original language and not in a “english” way, the pronunciation of “GI” in spanish is similar to “HE” in english so you can pronounce it as “Hegante”. Aside from that, excellent video as always.
13:42 I saw in my settings that the laser sight is available...maybe it is an upgrade later in the game. Also, look at that insane graphics jump from RE4 to RE5 😮
That's the PC version of RE5, so its performance and resolution are way better than you'd be seeing on a console back in the day. At 720p and 30fps on console, the gulf between 5 and 4 wasn't nearly as wide, though it was still a considerable upgrade!
@UnrealStutterEngine Yeah, the 360 and PS3 were already far from cutting-edge in 2009, whereas an actual high-end card could probably do 1080p60 on max settings. Though I wouldn't go as far as to say a potato could run it maxed. My 7300 GT that I had back then would have melted!
As much as I loved RE4 back in the day, I'm not in a hurry to play the remake. The demo pretty much showed me what to expect; hopefully the visual fixes will occur soon from Capcom. Looking forward to seeing how the PS4 version runs on PS5.

I love how CPU bottlenecks are a thing of the past if you are on any GPUs from 3080 upwards. Almost all games now are mainly GPU bound and hope it continues this way. You can literally have a 10 year old CPU and still be good to go with any card from 3080 and above. The only bottleneck now is pretty much the GPU. Also with a 4090 say goodbye to shader compilation frame drops. 4090 is the only card that eliminates any shader compilation or traversal stutter. Consoles are notorios for shader compilation issues since it has nothing to do with the engine it's all tied to amount of VRAM and with 24 GB of VRAM it pretty much compiles all shaders instantly

Came for the Tech Review and stayed for the gameplay, it's nice to see the game played with some skill. On PC I got big fps drops when returning to the village in the storm.
Embarrassing release by Capcom on console. Absolute game killer on Series X, that's unplayable garbage. Definitely more tolerable on PS5 gameplay wise but still looks way too blurry. Pathetic how these companies refuse to fix glaring problems before release these days.
I am slightly disappointed in the issues on PS5 and XSX. Especially how the game engine has been used well with Village. I hope the remaining technical issues can be resolved via patches. The input issue on XSX and visual issues on PS5 definitely need patches fast.
I mean the pc version isn't any better constant crashes even with ray tracing off, would rather have lower fps than crashes, the pc version needs patching soon.

Not sure if you were complaining about how there’s no red-laser sight on default for all of the weapons in REmake or just not being aware but it’s an attachment. Idk man
By default all of them had them, now only a few do and you have to unlock them. It's a ligament complaint especially when the laser always hit where it was point before but now you have a crosshair that doesn't. It's a downgrade in game mechanics for no real purpose.
You're DEAD ON with the criticism about the dogs in the lightning storm coming back to the church. It ABSOLUTELY feels more intense in the original, part of that is definitely the lightning and thunder but also I felt the rain itself was so much more oppressive in the original. In the remake it doesn't FEEL like it's coming down quite as hard, yet both Leon and Ashley won't stop grunting and groaning every 10s they stand in it so I may be wrong.
THIS is a remake. Not a remaster, not a "visual remake". This is what remakes SHOULD be. ACTUALLY built from the ground up and not just a port to a new engine with new assets, lighting and some tweaks here and there.
While your comment might be understandable at this time, we need to remember that some games were so unique that remaking any part of their gameplay might genuinely rob us of an authentic experience. I'm speaking here of Shadow of the Colossus, or the first three Uncharted games or even The Last of Us. It's important, at times, to keep the original soul and body going beneath all that beautiful new armor. This does not diminish the quality and importance of these RE remakes, though - in a very different way, they translate their original experiences for modern eyes and hands.
@@Picolettto I agree, and I'd argue those games deserve fantastic remasters. There's nothing wrong with a remaster at all, one of my favorite games is halo 2 anniversary which marketed itself as a remaster but today would have been called a remake. To me a remake just means the whole game has been remade. A remaster means you've taken the original game and overhauled the visuals. By that subjective definition, Dead space would be a remake and TLOU 1 would be a remaster, but that doesn't mean one is better or worse than the other. There are just different expectations. A better, but more vague, way to put it is this: is it a better version of an existing game, or is it a new game that tries to replicate the old one?
I’m very confident Capcom will sort out their issues as they’ve been on point with their games. But this is yet another lesson for ppl to stop buying games Day 1 I don’t get it. You’ve waited this long what’s the rush?
My concern is the PS5 issues might be engine deep, as depending on how they approached this game being a cross Gen title might have serious implications. If they approached the ps5 version as its own version/entity then the possibility of ironing out the issues especially with checkerboard rendering is there, but if they approached it as an enhanced PS4 version then the checkerboard issues, etc. could be an unsolvable problem. Which in turn is why the PC version has little to no performance issues using all the same settings with similar class hardware.
Having both machines and knowing their problems beforehand because DF I opted for the ps5 because it controls way better but yeah image is a little soft

Did they fix the stoft visuals on ps5 with the day one patch ?
Watch the video he said no.
Obiously you did no even watch the first couple of minutes of the video. If you don't put in your time...why should others. Watch the video!!!
No there’s small fixes you can do to help adjust, but capcom announced they are working on a fix
Turn off chromatic aberration helps a lot
Hopefully the coming VR content is the full game and to the standard of Village's implementation. Tantalising stuff
Glad to see John give the fantastic RE 4 HD Project mod a shout out. 1.0 came out a few months back and replaces every single texture in the game with a higher quality version. While staying amazingly faithful to the original. The author of the mod even made some trips to get source photos at some of the same locations the developers visited when making the original.
The red beam laser is now an unlockable attachment that removes the need to stand still to gain higher accuracy once you get it
Side note, if you buy the laser sight for the pistol it gives you that more old style laser aim, without the jank.
Anyone else notice the control issue on xbox? I was torn on buying that version too bolster my xbox collection. But now I'm thinking I should go ps5.
Ps5 version is broken ..
It’s terrible. I don’t recommend the purchase until fixed
@@jackbrel how so
Get it on the PS5 plays beautifully! I was rethinking buying the game at all cuz Leon felt Slug-ish control wise. But on the final release he controls amazingly 🎮 shimmering can almost be eliminated by changing TV picture settings. Any other visual issues I encountered a closing the game and restarting from dashboard solves them no game breaking bug encountered though.
Seems to have that same bug Dead Space Remake had at launch on PS5 Hope they fix it asap
The ps5 version is literally having the same problem as forbidden west had when it first released but it isn’t as bad.
Hopefully they fix it. I'm not very optimistic though since not enough people are mentioning it.
What problem is that
@@true_gamer39 shimmering due to poor Anti aliasing basically things with sharps edges look blurry and fuzzy and it should be sharper
I’m glad you said something about the laggy controls on Xbox. I hope Capcom will take note and do something to fix it.
Can't wait to see Alex talk about the PC version of the game :D Oh great times!
I think this one will be less salty cuz it's not in unreal engine
@UnrealStutterEngine It isn't perfect by any means though.. There still is traversal stutter and he will most certainly nag on that.

Regarding laser sight, I’m pretty sure I saw that you can exchange 10 spinel for a red dot attachment at the shop.
Only for the pistol though.
@@thegreatpoo2electricboogal318 And from what I've seen, the laser sight is pretty crummy.
The fastest DF review ever! I don't usually get DF reviews until a week or 2 after release!
Starting a Resident Evil game review with Silent Hill music, that's a nice touch 🤣
Lol agreed
13:50 I agree John! Bring back the laser!
Maybe the Xbox users with an elite controller could solve the aim problem with the controller configuration, at least while Capcom solves the issue.
Can’t wait to play this game later today!
I will buy this when it comes out for PSVR 2.
Me too. Village on psvr2 was the best gaming experience I have had in years.
I wish they would have added a dodge mechanic as well like in RE3 remake, I’ve been playing Witcher 3 so as I started playing RE4 last night I keep pressing B expecting to dodge lol
There is a dodge mechanic and it is B. It will show up later. Also, crouching can dodge quite a bit of attacks too!
13:56 the laser sight is in the game. But it's an upgrade now
They just replaced the crosshair with a glowing red dot, and the dot doesn't even sync with the barrel's movement or even recoil.
Plus it is only available for 2 pistols.
You can get the laser sight even in the Remake.
Anyway still a great comparison.
Enjoy the game everyone!
Only 2, 3 with deluxe, but aight
There are fewer joys in life greater than suplexing and old Spanish lady in to the dirt.
Definitely waiting a couple of months for the issues to be ironed out. I want to experience this in its full glory.
These issues won’t be fixed unfortunately
@@JamieRobert_ Why wouldn't they? Capcom has a record of updating their games and they're releasing DLC for this game, almost surely they will all be addressed.
@@no-barknoonan1335 it can’t be addressed if the console can’t handle it
@@JamieRobert_ Which of those issues can consoles not handle? It's a cross platform release, the video is talking about PS5 and series X, you think those consoles can't handle a fixed version of re4?

15:10 the bridge can also be blown apart which is pretty cool. Had some enemies kill themselves with dynamite doing it lol.
"El Gigante" since it is a spanish name the pronunciation should be in the original language and not in a “english” way, the pronunciation of “GI” in spanish is similar to “HE” in english so you can pronounce it as “Hegante”. Aside from that, excellent video as always.
My only issue is the occasional traversal stutter. It's like a slowdown of less than a second when running through areas
cant wait for the half assed RE 5 remake.
1:57 Now its SH4 theme that is playing! 😄"Nightmarish Waltz"!
Played this during my lunch break at work
Feel like playing through the original again.
I likes original RE4 atmosphere more than this remake. Playing og RE4 on Nintendo Switch in solid 60fps is amazing
Thanks John. Your work is easily among the best in the industry.
How exactly?
if you not praise re4 every forms indusrty not accapt you.
Just purchased and looking forward to a fun little weekend! Thanks for the insights!
As much as I loved RE4 back in the day, I'm not in a hurry to play the remake. The demo pretty much showed me what to expect; hopefully the visual fixes will occur soon from Capcom. Looking forward to seeing how the PS4 version runs on PS5.
I played on PS4pro ssd, 1080p performance and it was smooth 60fps the entire demo.
I'm honestly praying everyday that we get a Dead Rising remake on the RE engine with VR support.
No love for the Quest 2 VR version? It was amazing.
I really believe the PC version is the go to version. With the boat loads of settings seals the deal. This game is well optimized IMO.
Ya and all you need is a 2500 dollar pc to do what next gen is doing for 550
@@johndodo2062 false. Have a 2,000$ pc and a ps5, played it on both and the ps5 version looked like complete shit at 1/3 of the frame rate compared to pc. To get similar image quality to ps5 I put it to 1080p and low-med settings then it’s like 6x the frame rate on pc. Console ain’t there yet chief
nah, there's lots of issues on pc right now
@@xKillZone99 only issue I’ve run into is with ray tracing on it crashes sometimes. Turn that off til they fix that bug and it’s flawless. Have a 3080 and it runs almost always over 100 fps on 3440 x 1440 with everything maxed except I think texture quality I have at 4gb
If you have a elite series 2 controller you can adjust the thumb sticks sensitivity to aggressive and it fixes the whole problem 100%
I don't understand the "problem" with the Xbox controls. Just go to settings and increase camera sensitivity and acceleration. It's totally fine, it feels good, I don't know what you want.
RE3.5 is still what I wish we got.
No matter which game capcom remake there’s always air breathers who wish they’d made something else
Great review and exposition John. Loved the side by side comparisons and contextual mood examples in the video. Great work! Cheers
The parry system is so satisfying. Good job Capcom.
One of the few games that I consider using ray tracing on consoles.
No 30 FPS on that mode....that's huge.
Call me insane but i still prefer the tank control of re4, just carefully landing headshots with ease, now in the remake shooting enemies is not half as satisfying as the the og re4. I love the knife combat though
Buy the laser red dot in the gun shop
@@mariomr1000 I agree. Hopefully, Capcom gets all versions fixed asap. This being a remake of one of their biggest titles in their company history. Deserves more polish than what was let out in current. Mind compared to some other AAA games releases, it isn't the worst...
I mean, it isn't a GTA trilogy bad 😅... Though some of the issues just seem odd given the prior work done on Village and other games using the same Engine.
This video only serves to remind me that the more I see of the remake the less inclined I am to purchase or even play it when I own the Original. Why is the path to the house longer in the beginning? Why are there additional mountains near the church? Why have the environments been so drastically altered? All unnecessary and Capcom is really just shitting on Shinji’s masterpiece 🤦
Not to mention all sanitization to make the game politically correct.
I'd like to see DF cover some of the AMD GDC tech talks. Seems like something that should interest them.

That Silent Hill soundtrack though. 👌
13:55 You can buy it from the trader with Spinals
THIS is a remake. Not a remaster, not a "visual remake". This is what remakes SHOULD be. ACTUALLY built from the ground up and not just a port to a new engine with new assets, lighting and some tweaks here and there.
Dead space was also a great Remake. I’ve been eating good this year lol
Metroid prime remastered reaaallly should have added some sort of quick travel option along with better guidance.
I disagree. This is a great reimagining to me. Something like TLOU Part 1 is a great remake
Im surprised they left the "Slash the parasite on Gigante's back" part, considered they went for less animey vibes.
I’m very confident Capcom will sort out their issues as they’ve been on point with their games. But this is yet another lesson for ppl to stop buying games Day 1 I don’t get it. You’ve waited this long what’s the rush?
Resident evil 4 HD project is the definitive version.
Great choice of a Silent Hill track to accompany this Resident Evil video.
Shoot, I was hoping the technical review would drop today. Really want to know if I should grab it on ps5 or PC....
John, the red dot now is an upgrade that you have to buy.
Having both machines and knowing their problems beforehand because DF I opted for the ps5 because it controls way better but yeah image is a little soft
Game looks amazing specially when its starts raining near the mines half way through but on series x at least they didn't even patch that 100 pixel wall at the beginning
