Fun Fact: Up until RE Code Veronica, RE games used real weapons and weapon names in game, ie in RE2 the VP70 is actually called a VP70 and Code Veronica even has Calico M-100s in it. It uses 9mm parabellum rounds." for Claires , if that's not considered a "real" weapon name/ description to you, than I don't know what else to say XD
@@silvergunner101 True, RE5 uses mostly accurate real world models, the names are pretty accurate too, though not quite as descriptive in terms of the actual brand name, ie H&K MP5, M92F, M3, or S&W 29 (notice brands with abbreviations S&W, H&K have it, but brands like "Berretta" M92F and "Benelli" M3 are missing from those). Kinda like how in OG MW1 the R700 was a Remington 700 (don't need license to put an R in front of 700). Though they do have Ithaca M37 which has the only fully spelled out brand name (Dragunov doesn't count), not sure if they got rights for Ithaca, would be cheaper than a big brand like H&K. That being said, off memory at least, only RE1 actually spells out the full brand name, "Berretta M92FS", so RE5 is good in this regard for an RE game
@@Bulbman123 I think there's some kind of work around of sorts if they're a military designation. I'm not sure if it's just US military based or others allow it, but you'll see games like DayZ for example where they call the M16A2 the M16A2, or the M4A1 the M4A1, but the AKM is called the KA-M and the AK-74 is called the KA-74 so I'd imagine it's some kind of public domain copyright thing in US law.
One thing I love so much about Jonathan's expertise on video game guns is that he recognizes it's a game and that some liberties are taken for the game to be enjoyable. Not just saying something is bad and nitpicking but explaining why something might not be right.
Reminds me of that former Mafioso who was reacting to the Mafia games and he kept saying things like: “you can’t carry a dozen guns on you” or “most mafia guys don’t drive so well”
Its worth noting that since Jonathan's last analyze of the Red 9 they actually fixed the reload animation. In the original RE4 video Jonathan had noted Leon does a sort of Revolver-esque flip to remove the stripper clip from the gun, which isn't exactly possible due to how jammed in the clip is, but in the remake Leon now pulls out the clip as seen around 10:30

IIRC the VP70 in burst has a 2200 round per minute rate of fire, so it pops off those 3 rounds in roughly 1/12th of a second. If someone is standing about 30 meters (99 feet) away, the 3rd round will have discharged by the time the sound from the 1st reaches them... It's honestly a little mind-boggling that they actually made a pistol that could cycle at that speed... Long story short, the sound of discharge is so stacked together it almost seems like 1 shot that stutters briefly.
Probably why they slowed it down in the game: it wouldn't seem like you were actually getting 3 shots, so players might feel cheated spending 3 ammo for "only one" shot.
For a game running at 60 frames per second, 1/12th of a second is 5 frames. So it would fire every other frame for 3 shots. That's pretty reasonable and I think possible to notice it's three different shots?
@@micuu1 one thing they could do is instead of accurately simulating the 3 round burst, it would play a significantly louder report, higher muzzle rise, deal 3 times more damage per trigger pull, and instant stun regular ganados for a follow up melee attack and stun for longer, and lastly increase the chance for a headshot critical and limb dismemberment.
@@micuu1 I'm pretty sure it's a balance thing. With the current fire rate, you need to keep your reticle on target for a significant amount of time to take advantage of the full three round burst.
Fun fact: the SG in SG-09 R is actually an abbreviation for "Silver Ghost" the nickname of Leon's pistol (his own personal custom made "hero's weapon" much like Chris's "Samurai Edge") and the R stands for "Remake" so the full name of the handgun is "Silver Ghost Remake". I don't know what the "09" supposed to be though since the original game was released in 2004/05, could be it's caliber (9mm) as one of the reply pointed out
I miss how the original just had a laser sight fitted to absolutely everything in place of a crosshair. I thought that was a cool way to reduce hud elements without sacrificing functionality.
The VR adaptation of the original game follows suit by putting a laser sight on everything, and as a first-person virtual reality game, you can still use the actual sights, too!
that's cause all new remakes has this mechanic when you wait for a bit the crosshair becomes smaller which makes your next shot more accurate and increases your crit chance, you can't really do that with the laser sight. They have the laser sight attachment for the starting pistol and the punnisher which makes them fully accurate, so that's at least smth
The thick pistol handle of the CQBR might be because they modelled it after an airsoft rifle. They have a thicker handle because the electric motor is located inside the grip.
Killer7 is a direct reference from the old Gamecube Game Killer7 (2005). Kaede Smith carried it in game. She was supposed to be the long range shooter of the group. I'm surprised the Chicago Typewriter isn't featured in this release. That was a fun one to play with. :)
You are correct about the observation you made about the CQBRs grip looking larger than normal and there is a reason for that. Capcom has worked with the Japanese Airsoft manufacturer Tokyo Marui since Resident Evil 2. They have helped with modeling the guns for the game by providing reference models and scans of their airsoft rifles and even make RE themed versions of the guns. That being said an airsoft AEG AR/M4 platform guns house an electric motor in the grip making the grip larger/wider than a normal grip. My guess is they used a Tokyo Marui CQBR and modeled the gun as it came out of the box.
18:58 Jonathan, you actually called it correctly. The original RE2 and it's Remake both take place in 1998, and according to this game 6 years have passed, placing it in the year 2004.
I've watched a number of these firearms review/breakdowns and I have to say Jonathan Ferguson not only shares his passion and knowledge for firearms in an exciting, clear, concise, and fun way, but shows his personality in Easter Egg form with the t shirts he wears under his blazer, including this zombie one and an Alter Bridge shirt in a previous video. Kudos to you Jonathan, can of coke to ya!
I think the thing I love most about these videos is that Jonathan has fun with it. He gives games credit where he thinks credit is due while appreciating why they take liberties to be spectacular and unrealistic and fun. It's always a fun watch.
I know it's probably just a pipe dream but I would love to see Jonathan play a gunsmith or armory advisor in a John Wick movie. Love seeing him break down the details and seeing his passion for guns and the history of them
Always been a Mathilda person. Something about the firearm just screams Leon's iconic weapon - in the same way Samuari Edge is Jill's weapon of choice, Chris is his arm mounted canons for boulder movement & Claire's resides on her backside.
Fun fact: the movie “Leon: the professional.” Also featured Natalie Portman as “Mathilda”, the young girl he was protecting, much like Leon and Ashley’s relationship.
Oh wow! I lovvvve that film and never put two and two together! It totally makes sense, even Ashley gaining confidence and Leon saying "you'll put me out of a job"@@restart426
So glad you did this video. I saw your review of 2005's RE4 guns recently and it's made me watch a number of videos from your channel and pass it around.
I'm not even a gun person but one thing I always noticed in that show is there would often be scenes where Bauer would point a gun at someone but then decide not to shoot them for whatever reason, and to communicate this to the audience they would always make a show of him pulling the trigger to thumb the hammer down accompanied by a loud inserted **click** just so we know the gun "turned off". But he'd always continue pointing the gun at the person whilst doing that. I swear, if you watch closely, he nearly Alec Baldwins about five innocent people every season lol.
As for the Killer7, the name of it is a reference to the gun used by KAEDE Smith in the game Killer7 (another Capcom 5 title like the OG RE4) which is also a direct reference to Terminator. So it being in RE4 is kind of a double reference link
Still gotta love the pop culture references with the guns. Matilda references the movie Leon: The Professional and Killer 7 references Suda51's video game Killer7.
fun fact: so the USP is in fact a USP but its not made by H&K, fans of the RE series can see a name engraved on the side witch plays all the way back to RE1, kendo is a gun shop in raccoon city run by two brothers, one presumably dies in raccoon city, never the less they are known for making high end custom firearms, the more notable being the samurai edge witch is based on Beretta m9 pattern but not all are the some, barrys for instance is based on the 96FS the .40 cal version
It probably still is made by H&K in the RE universe (assuming they exist in that universe) it's just that Kendo customised the USP for Leon, hence the engraving. He didn't make the USP.
@@Necrowolf81 Pretty sure Leon lived in Racoon City before Re2, the game was just his first day as a police officer. He could have ordered a custom pistol as his service weapon or something.
That Schoffield is in the original, but it's semi-hidden, some optional back-tracking involved. Broken Butterfly. Far more powerful than the other magnum but slower/less capacity.
also its only half Schofield, namely the barrel, cylinder and latch, while the frame is from the Colt Single Action Army, so its really not suprising that Jonathan missed it
I'm fairly certain the fire rate is identical, unless by "slower" you mean the reload speed which would then be correct, just that I've seen people claim something similar regarding the lightning hawk and S&W M29 in re5
Well the MP5 is found in the merc base so the sliced off sight might be a personal mod from it's former owner. Still it was nice getting back to basics and getting the red 9 again.
Clearly before Krauser showed up and convinced everyone that knives were faster than guns and they should employ edge and melee weapons or crossbows and catapults... Now if only some try hard hadn't shown up with some modern firearms and for some reason singlehandedly obliterated near about every one of them like it was army of darkness or stargate or somethin... dunno... maybe faster isn't better... or maybe its not fast...? or mayb... Nah must have been hax and or witchcraft...
Old school SEALs would cut the front sight off. This gun may have seen some combat. Just learned this from GBRS Group's UA-cam channel. They are both former Devgru guys.
Would love to see Jonathan cover some of the weirder guns from Hot Dogs, Horseshoes and Hand Grenades (like the sustenance assault rifle, for example), or even some of the real-world weapons that have been added in by mods (like the old west percussion revolvers, or the replicas of sci-fi and video game weapons - that would be super meta!). Though turning off the easy reload this time might give Jonathan more to chew on since it makes reloading a bit more realistic. Also, taking time to look at how the different parts of the guns are modelled could be a fun deep dive seeing as the non-modded weapons in particular have all their visible moving parts modelled and animated. H3VR is hands-down my favourite shooter and my most-played VR title and the fact that new guns are frequently added/modded in makes it a constant source of nerdy fun.
In fairness to the Matilda (VP-70), one of the upgrades you can buy for it in-game is an improved rate of fire. When maxed out the Level 5 upgrade, it shoots just under 2x faster than when you buy it at what is effectively Level 0, before the Level 1 upgrades get applied. Assuming the gameplay video was just the gun as it was purchased from the Merchant, it's 5 upgrades away from its more realistic rate of fire.
Come to think of it, I feel like an SMG is actually a really good choice of weapon for any sort of a zombie-like encounter. Because not only do you want good maneuverability when you're caught in close quarters, but also very, VERY few of your enemies are going to be wearing any kind of body armor. So one of the biggest drawbacks of pistol-caliber cartridges is now kind of a mute point.
you are absolutely correct, and here i am with a minor nitpick, sorry, hahaha. you said a 'mute point' which actually does make sense because the point has been silenced and is no longer necessary to hear, but the ORIGINAL phrase is "moot point," which comes from law school, a "moot" is a fake trial held by law students to practice their arguing skills, so a moot point is "it might be good practice to debate/think about this but in the end nobody really cares"
I guess the longer barrel and higher magazine capacity compared to a handgun, with lower recoil compared to a rifle, would also be a desirable combination when dealing with zombie-like things that you need to land multiple accurate shots on. Since that would give you more accuracy and more shots. Probably? I've never fired a gun so I don't actually know. Made sense in my head lol.
Fun fact: althout both magnum weapons in RE4 (OG & Remake) are called 45 cal magnum, the developers actually made a mistake when desiging or naming items because if you inspect the ammo box for "magnum" ammo, its actually .45 acp cartridges, a much less powerfull bullet then lets say 44 magnum the probably intended depiction.
@@peppermillers8361 even RE2 remake there is handgun ammo (9mm), magnum ammo (50 AE and 357 mag) and large caliber pistol ammo for "B" scenarios, wich is 45 acp. They when for full nostalgia with re4 and made the same mistake.

I do like the detail for the Red9 in the game where the description on the weapon actually points out that the "9" on the grip is to denote the proper ammunition type. Neat little trivia tidbit. Less happy that the Killer7 doesn't have the logo etched into it anymore, but I guess it's fine...
17:30 That Chopped Block is the perfect place for a (Tiny) Trident Rail System. One on top, one on each side - no barrel shadow if you have a light on it, makes sense because there's a laser anyway.
I've mentioned it before but I'll comment again, I'd love for Johnathan to take a look at Receiver 2. I feel like he would appreciate the level of detail that's gone into the guns in that game
@1:51 There's another possibility with that recoil could be something related to an added mechanic in the gameplay. Some sources claim that based on the player's health, if it's either not at 100% or below a certain %, that it can impact the player's ability to steadily aim and fire and add increased sway and recoil. This sort of thing is kind of similar to some of the later Metal Gear Solid games if the player's Psyche/Stamina is below 50%.
Having played nothing else ever since I got my hands on this game, I can absolutely confirm that with the upgrades maxed out, the Matilda a.k.a H&K VP-70 fire rate is absolutely spot-on.

That's just the contrast between his professional persona and his real self. He's probably a lot cooler and more down to earth out of the office than you think. Plus, He's middle class British, he can't really help sounding like that lol.
Regarding the Striker's magazine winding, strictly speaking it is modeled in the game just not correctly; when Leon loads a round, he pauses to wind the crank and there's an audible spring-winding noise. The difference is he somehow turns the crank from the back of the magazine instead of the front, likely to make the animation less awkward in 3rd person.
In regards to the timeline, Resident Evil 2 & 3 took place in Fall of 1998. RE4 is a direct continuation and takes place only a few years after the prior two games in numerical order. So, that being said, the placement of some guns like the model of AR-15 are actually pretty accurate. It's also the reason that Ashley's phone which you can find is a big, chunky flip phone as opposed to a modern smart phone.
@19:15 The same rifle Carlos Oliveira is known for using in RE3. Although there have been nunerous variations designs and adaptations of the AR-15, M16/M4 base over the decades from when it's original military model M16A1 came into existence during Vietnam, I cannot ascertain whether or not that exact particular in game model as seen there or in the R3make of re3 existed during 1998 when the Raccoon City incident took place. Carlos in R3make also got a dual magazine, tactical grip, and red dot scope upgrade for his none of which aside from the option to add scopes were available for it in REm4ke. Funny thing is in RE3 2020 the dual mag in game acted as doubling the ammo capacity rather than actually increasing the reload speed.
1:07 IDK that thing is Weird. The Slide is a USP. Lower Rail mount is both USP & VP9. Lower receiver controls are a USP. The finger grooves on the Grip resembles a HK 45 but with Glock Gen 3 grip texture.
Fun Fact: 19:25 The reason of the thick pistol grip from the CQBR (AR15) is probably that the graphic designers were using an Airsoft AEG (Automatic-Electric-Gun) Replica as reference, where the grip needs to have storage Space for the electric Motor. The Airsoft-Gun Manufacturer "Marui" or "Tokyo Marui" is often featured in the credits from multiple Resident Evil Games. 😁
I love that he got the fact that the mainline games tend to happen either the year the game came out or 1 year in either direction. Shadow of Rose is the first time ever that resident has done a time skip to the year 2037.
I'd love to see you cover the remake of Resident Evil 2, which has yet to be covered! I also think the shirt is from Zombi 2 (or Zombie: Flesh Eaters)!
Good guess, it does look a little like it could be from Zombi 2 because it looks both retro and realistic (zombi 2 had easily some of the best looking zombies in 70's films), though I'm not sure if i remember seeing it in any of the scenes.
@14:44 Even in the original 05' RE4 I sorta got the same vibes from the design of Killer 7 magnum as I did from the S.T.I. Eagle 6.0 Carlos Oliveira uses in RE3 Mercenaries Mode. The design structures of both appear to be derived off of a 1911 base, not sure what kind of laser sight scope or optics the S.T.I. Eagle in RE3 had but of course it was just a 9mm handgun with a faster fire rate and higher chance of Crit hits than the Sigpro or M92F, it wasn't chambered for magnum bullets.
Please make a video on *METAL GEAR SOLID 3* weapons. So many weapons in MGS3 to react and comment on like the Patriot's infinite ammo magazine, the EZ tranq gun, Snake's customized officer M1911A1, Snake whittling the pistol grip to use a knife for CQC, Ocelot's SAA juggling skills, The End's paratrooper tranquilizer Mosin Nagant, the Davey Crockett recoil-less nuclear launcher and Eva's chinese mauser clone.

It's awesome that he is even allowed to provide us with this "knowledge" and showing us all these guns. It is also impressive that even if none of these weapons is loaded, hw keeps them pointing away from himself all the time. This guy lives the gun safety rules. :D
Shearing off the sights was also done to the Swedish AK4, a G3 clone, when converting them to the AK4b pattern which replaced the sights with a red-dot optical. This modification of the MP5 seems to be similar but it's odd that there's no actual sight mounted on the picatiny.
I recognized Leon’s trusty sidearm Matilda as being heavily based off the H&K VP70 in the RE2 Remake since my dad is a huge military history buff and amateur firearms researcher and he likes to watch Forgotten Weapons here on UA-cam from time to time.
I think it’s the same as the original game as well where the handgun was or at least was based of the VP70 and the Matilda parts could be found to upgrade it. I remember you needing to aim down too so all three shots hit the target but up close
Masterful remake of a masterpiece. Knocked it out of the park. Capcoms remake team are getting toward legendary status and I think we're gonna be looking back at what they're doing here as influential on the quality of remakes in future. It's amazing how they balance cutting edge graphics and modernisation while preserving the soul of the original. A rare feat achieved several times in a row now, even if 3 was slightly underwhelming.
I was going in with mild expectations knowing how much was cut from RE2/3make, but it actually preserves almost everything while adding new stuff just like they said. I’ll miss cutscene QTEs personally but I’m probably unpopular with that view. I think the cutscenes up to the castle are pretty lackluster in setting up the story versus the original (One of my favorite buildups is the villagers holding back and being crushed by the first el gigante before you fight him but they just start the fight now with him breaking out on his own, things like that) picking up a lot more mid castle where I am. I also realllly don’t like the merchant now because he spouts out like seven lines just for checking any menu and never shuts up, but guess it’s just a live with it situation. Gameplay wise I think it plays great, had to constantly be finding optimal areas to begin fighting back without being cornered and the slightly slower run speed can make it tense. The weapon storage at typewriters was a bit of a concern but since they changed resell value based on your upgrades, it encourages using the other weapons a lot more rather than just what you’ve been upgrading since the start. What I really don’t like about the gameplay is the added charms to the attache case basically being generic video game passives like -1 gunpowder use and 8% RUNNING SPEED. It feels really weird to randomly get charms that would make my experience entirely different from someone else. Could not use them and be totally fine…. But you could also just not use anything if you wanted to. Odd decision to add random bonus perks from a gacha machine in the shooting range. Another problem I have with the gameplay is how hilariously easy it is to break when you get the crafting for flash grenades. They’re very strong in this game since encounters start spamming plagas heads and take the same slots that you used the resource for anyways, so they’re just absurdly op.
I can't help but notice that it appears Jonathan is doing his commentary in what appears to be.. the rocket launcher room! Can anyone name various shoulder-fired weapons on the rack on the right side?

One thing I love so much about Jonathan's expertise on video game guns is that he recognizes it's a game and that some liberties are taken for the game to be enjoyable. Not just saying something is bad and nitpicking but explaining why something might not be right.

Yeah it's a neat little fixed detail that I kind of hoped they would notice.
That little change ruined that gun for me in the remake, I still used it the most but I really missed that little ping and flick when reloading it.

@@micuu1 The game's framerate wouldn't even be able to show you each individual shot either.
They have the laser sight attachment for the starting pistol and the punnisher which makes them fully accurate, so that's at least smth
The thick pistol handle of the CQBR might be because they modelled it after an airsoft rifle. They have a thicker handle because the electric motor is located inside the grip.

@@WhiteBoyGamer It's in the game already, it's just one of the rewards for beating Professional difficulty.

Some Pistol ammo weighs more then .223/5.56. a box of .45acp for example will weigh more then the equivalent in .223.
you are absolutely correct, and here i am with a minor nitpick, sorry, hahaha.
you said a 'mute point' which actually does make sense because the point has been silenced and is no longer necessary to hear, but the ORIGINAL phrase is "moot point," which comes from law school, a "moot" is a fake trial held by law students to practice their arguing skills, so a moot point is "it might be good practice to debate/think about this but in the end nobody really cares"

It's even more funny considering that they didn't make that mistake when making RE Outbreak.
I thought that was intended because Barry specifically uses a 44 and it kept it distinguished.

Dang, I was really hoping he'd touch on the Blacktail, I'd really love to learn about that one. Still an excellent video!

The design structures of both appear to be derived off of a 1911 base, not sure what kind of laser sight scope or optics the S.T.I.
I feel like Squidward in that meme.
Everyone around me is playing but I'm not.
"Gun rimes with fun for a rEAson stranger! Haha" Im from Spain and this line is my fav 😂.
I can't help but notice that it appears Jonathan is doing his commentary in what appears to be.. the rocket launcher room!
Can anyone name various shoulder-fired weapons on the rack on the right side?
yes
@@gunsrtheanswer Guns are literally the answer.
Or shoulder-fired launchers, anyway.
They didn't really show it off well but the Strikers reload animation does have the windup after each shell being loaded.
So much hype for Jonathan to react for new CS2 weapons models, but we need to wait for summer 😢
Yay, thank you Jonathan/Gamespot for reading my comment about the Killer7.
This made my day😁
(I know it wasn't necessarily my comment - but I wanna think it was. I'm selfish like that.)
this game’s guns blur the line between grounded and cool, or really dumb and goofy. I also love how he’s began talking about how incorrect postures can be good for gameplay, etc.
Im sure capcom is using some artistic liberties to thier advantage to make these guns juuust different to not get sued, but close enough to tell what they are going for.
I think it was like the very 1st one or two games they actually used real gun names and true to life models. Well as true as you could get in the 90s.
Thing is you cant get sued by using the design of the gun only the branding of it (you can work around designations though)
@@Brian-tn4cd. In some cases, yes; Others are a bit different. For instance, Glock not only copyrights their product names and looks, but also the mechanics that make their products work.
@@dragonbornexpress5650 mechanics would be under patent not copyright and A that lasts only 20 years B i dont believe you could credibly sue since they aren't making the mechanism
To this day almost half of the RE games had real weapons and names. RE1, 2, 3, 5, Code Veronica, Survivor 1, Survivor 2, and Revelation 1 and 2 with a few liberties. RE7, RE8, and RE4 Remake have some weapons with their real names.
In resident evil 8 you get a m1911 that uses the real name.
The Silver Ghost canonically is a custom gunsmith job with a HK USP as a base, similar to the Samurai Edge and its Beretta M9 base
In theory one could fabricate the compensator and lower frame to match the RE4 pistol
The official airsoft replica of the Silver Ghost funny enough has HK markings on the pistol still
The series prior to the original resident evil 4, the series used the real life names for most of thier weaponry.
In leon's first appearnce in resident evil 2 he started off with the HK VP70, with the ability to add the stock for the three round burst fire as his basic handgun. It's rebranded name "Matilda" is a reference to the Movie Leon: The Professional.
Jonathan is such a Chad. Classy, yet with a massive arsenal of weapons from all eras. Real life persona of James Bond. Seriously though his knowledge is extensive and I love to hear his thoughts. It's very insightful
Man the RE 4 designers were obviously fans of HK lol
