Just a little thing, but I love how you have a tool for everything, and everything has a tool! From peeling the stickers to stirring the water, it gives me immense satisfaction!
Despite the fact that this wouldn't turn on and a button didn't work, this was in surprisingly good condition for its age. Whoever originally owned this obviously really loved it and took good care of it until it stopped working.
Its interesting seeing this video, having a gameboy of this model from when I was a kid, and thinking "damn that one looks like it's in rough shape" when i compare it to mine, only to see people praising how good condition it is. Makes me feel good that I have cared for the condition of my games and systems for this long tbh. Just regret selling every single video game I sold to pay for other games. Lots of stuff I used to have but dont anymore that I regret getting rid of
@@dafffodil I still have a lot of my old Nintendo consoles and games growing up, all in good condition. I became quite the game collector over the years, despite the fact some games have cost a pretty penny lol.
One time my dad got us a gameboy color that had masking tape on it we had no idea why one day we decided to take the tape off then we saw that it looked just like the one in the video
I think sometimes it’s just somebody gets older and they just put it in a box somewhere and it just sits until they’re moving or something. We’re doing clean out and they were like I don’t
I love this Edition of the GameBoy Color. My wife bought me one from ebay for Christmas '22 because I was so sad about that I had to sold my old one because we hand not so much money a few years ago. Now it's displayed next to me on my desk
God damn, 35 years already?! I’m 34 lol and I have one of this (well was a gift from my boyfriend, because my original one got stolen at school when I was a kid, I’m sure at my county we had things arrived late lol ). But godness how the time flies
This is some quality OT content-- the game in the sock, tapping out "Shave and a Haircut", Finland's favorite IPA, the Ducktor, the LOTR reference, the list goes on! Great stuff Odd, always love your videos ❤
Thanks, hopefully I get can get videos done more frequently. I've just been busy with projects I didn't film. Don't worry I'm not planning to quit making videos
While watching this, I was wondering. Do you ever fail to fix something? If so, how often does it happen and would you ever share a video of a failed attempt
Failures absolutely sometimes happen, especially electronic can simply not be fixable without taking the part from a different device and sometimes it can be hard or impossible to find replacement, let alone make new part, but it doesn't happen very often when I film. I do often have a fairly good idea if the item is fixable. And most problems with electronics can be fixed with a enough effort unless you need to start manufacturing your own chips or screens or other complicated parts. I probably wouldn't post a regular full video of failed attempt on this channel, if I start doing shorts or tiktok or similar content in the future, I could share failures in those if I get around to posting short videos too
On the bad connection between the CPU and the button pad; Quite often what fails is the "via".. That is the hole between the layers of the printed circuit board. Often you can fill up the "via" with solder so it is continual between both sides of the board and it will clear the 'open'. That is how we fixed problems similar to this on PCB's (printed circuit boards) in manufacturing when a device would not pass its initial test. VIA's are an 'unnatural' path and rely upon inserts that should be tinned on both sides. They can be intermittent (they fail or pass if the board is flexed ever so slightly or on temperature changes). Filling them with solder is not a bad thing and if you later decide to add a jumper you can clean them out. Also, consider using something known as 'wire wrap wire' for your jumpers; It is much finer solid stranded wire. It makes for a cleaner, more error-free repair. Then place a dot of super glue on the wire to hold it down to the circuit board just a few millimeters away from the wire.
I was a huge fan of Pokemon as a kid, still am in my 30's lmao. I had one of these growing up, and still have it in good condition. I'm a huge game collector you see, and have various old Nintendo consoles that still work and play games.
I wish I had a repair guy like you around dude, I've got so many old consoles that still work (aside from my Wii which sadly no longer reads discs and would be expensive to fix since it's an original that could play Gamecube games) but need some TLC and I would love to see fully restored. Hence why I enjoy your videos so much. Keep up the great work, I look forward to the next project!
I once met a kid with this special edition gameboy color. I guess he got it from his grandma? But it was cool to see in person! I miss the days when you were a kid, met another kid and they likely had a Pokemon game with them. Made trading that much more memorable!
Damn, this channel delivers again, I actually attempted to restore a Gameboy Pocket because of you lmao. Quick question: what polish did you use for the screen? I want to try that for restoring a lens on one repair I am doing.
Replying in hopes it pushes your comment to be seen. I also want to know what kind of polish that was. I tried some Mother's wheel polish on mine because it worked great on my watch crystal, but it kind of fogged my GBC screen.
A great restoration and video as always but I somehow knew he'd replace that sticker. To me, there's nothing wrong with having the original stickers be a little worn/dirty. I think it adds to the character and history of the device. Also, I still saw a bit of dirt on the shell during reassembly. If you just leave the plastic pieces soaking in the hot, soapy water for a while before cleaning, it makes all the difference.
awww yeah a new Odd Tinkering video. Really enjoy these but would like to see what you could do with a guitar, bicycle, vintage toaster, or even a cb radio. Please keep making new stuff.
the sound of the screen coming off at 3:40 was sooooo satisfying 😩🤌😮💨 also the cartridge coming out of the sock had me rolling lmaoo thank you for another awesome video❤
Wish I knew what happened to my Pokemon GBC :( Lost in a move, no doubt. Always love watching these! Inspires me to try and fix things instead of throwing them away.
I strongly appreciate that authenticity was prioritized over making it “perfect”. Many people would have just shell swapped it and called it a day but polishing the ORIGINAL screen lens? keeping the ORIGINAL label even though it wasn’t 100% perfect? This is a job well done, thank you for preserving history!
That was lovely. Especially loved the "subscribe" electric screwdriver you used to put in the screws again. that was funny and wouldve gotten me - but im already subscribed. :)

Thank you so much! I've had a Gameboy Color for years that I had given up on, but held onto. It just wouldn't power on. I cleaned the power switch with alcohol and that fixed it!
Why have I suddenly got an urge to *subscribe*? 😉 Brilliant resto though and fantastic to bring this classic machine back to life! I Only found out recently that the GBC actually had double the cpu clockspeed and double vram/ram over the original DMG model..
Honestly, after seeing you do much bigger repair projects, this one seems like it was reallllly easy and the most complicated part was the Down button 😅 Sometimes, nice easy projects is all we need to get the ball rolling. Haha
Man, you have no idea how BADLY I wanted one of these as a 6-year old in the year 2000, in the height of Pokemon Fever... Unfortunately my stepdad was a Playstation guy, so there was no Nintendo for me until I was old enough to buy my own DSLite.
I still have this exact type of game boy color that my mom got me when it first came out, and it still works. Along with a Pokémon blue version that STILL has its original data on it. WITH A MEW.
I had the Berry one and had the honor to play Pokemon Yellow on one of these at a Summer day camp. We would swap devices and games. Those were golden memories...
