  • I received this vintage car battery charger/ power source from a subscriber to restore it. It doesn't work and electricity has melted some of the parts. I will make new parts and repair and restore the machine.
    I hope you enjoy the video as much as I enjoyed making it. Thanks for watching!

    What a nice find for a restoration! There's actually a big demand for manual chargers. The modern smart chargers won't work with a completely dead battery. The old school manual chargers can sometimes bring a battery back from the dead. Every shop wants an old school manual charger. Thanks Odd👍

    • @aleksandersats9577
      @aleksandersats9577 Місяць тому +10

      No. smart ones can work with a completely dead battery. I've seen and know several that do, but most manufacturers just don't want you to do that because their excuse is safety. Manual lead acid battery chargers are extremely simple, even I have made one from 100% scrap parts. A transformer from a dead UPS which was designed to charge lead acid batteries, 2x 230v AC to DC rectifiers in parallel on a heatsink to handle the current (Yes diodes can work on a lower voltage just fine but at a certain point they won't.) Even the case of the charger I made from is scrapped from a dead server PSU which also has a fan that actively cools the transformer and rectifier under a heavy load

    • @dougoliver2342
      @dougoliver2342 Місяць тому +7

      All you need to do is add a test light in the circuit to make the smart charger think that the battery is drawing a charge, otherwise the charger shuts off.

    • @OddTinkering
      @OddTinkering  Місяць тому +15

      I've had those for a while but I haven't had the chance to use it on a video. Can be used at least for mold making and stabilizing wood. Especially with mold making, the silicone and epoxy are not cheap so in long run it will save you money and time if many your molds fail because of the bubbles and you need to make new ones and each time wait 12 hours for it to dry. And the vacuum pump can even be used in metal casting

    The "blue metal rectifier" is a selenium rectifier. Very reliable. It withstands short circuits very well. The cable, the fuse, the connectors, and ultimately the transformer burn out faster than the selenium rectifier.
    It emits a strange smell under heavy load.
    Probably, something similar happened here. There was a short circuit or heavy load for a long time, the connector and the fuse melted.
    Nice restoration, by the way.

      aren't those diodes the ones that smell like farts when they fail?

    • @TzOk
      @TzOk Місяць тому +1

      I wouldn't call it reliable - if the paint is damaged the selenium layer will oxidize, and the rectifier degrade. If overloaded the selenium could also melt and flow down from the baseplates.

      Please speak to us. We don't care if it's in German or Accented English or Swahili or multiple languages.
      In my past experience, it is the Selenium Rectifier (that array of several squarish plates) that fails first. I have repaired several old battery chargers, by swapping out the old Selenium Rectifier for a modern 4 way bridge Silicon Full Wave rectifier. They are only a few dollars each and rated at something like 25 amps, so well, well in excess of a typical home car battery charger's 4 amp or 6 amp rating..
      That said, great to see such a faithful restoration. And thanks for such kind treatment to the tenant you found inside who had popped-his-clogs.

    • @MthaMenMon
      @MthaMenMon 24 дні тому

      I would expect such an old and huge device to withstand even 50A, weird that it is only 6A rated.

  • @Starcraft387
    @Starcraft387 Місяць тому +6

    Nice video! Although, I should mention that the jumpers are definitely going to be cold after 24 hours of charging. They're only going to get hot within the first few minutes of charging when the battery is pulling the most amount of current from the charger. As the battery charges, it pulls less and less current from the charger, therefore causing the charger to produce less and less heat. After 24 hours of charging, the battery is pulling no current from the charger at all, so the charger (and the jumper) is going to be cold. If you want to see if the jumpers are getting warm while charging, you need to do so within the first few minutes of connecting a fairly discharged battery to the charger.

    Interesting restoration of an old school battery charger. Selenium rectifiers are pretty nasty but that one looks to be in good nick. I was surprised to see the rubber grommets were still pliable, I would have thought they would be brittle and crumble when you tried to remove them.
    Since this was a restoration you didn't want to change things but the naked fuse holder and lack to strain reliefs on the mains and battery cable come to mind, as did the lack of any insulation on the battery clips.
    The drill operated paint shaker was pretty cool. Agree with the posts about modern chargers that detect battery voltage for safety. I modified my with a pushbutton to manually override the detection feature.

    • @AstoundingAmelia
      @AstoundingAmelia Місяць тому

      Well it depends on the battery charger because I know of some modern ones that will work with completely dead batteries and some that refuse to, most of the ones you find at your local automotive shop tend not to since they're usually sold to the general idiot which means that if that person doesn't know about the hazards of charging completely dead batteries like hydrogen generation and batteries that will sometimes just dead short themselves and stuff like that they could very much create a very hazardous situation, My recommendation is by either a manual battery charger or by one that is made for workshops since those ones won't turn off on a completely dead battery since those ones have the presumption that whoever is using them actually knows what they're doing and so therefore it's safe to assume they're not going to blow up themselves, The other thing to do is just check if any of the smart battery charges have an override switch, for example one of the battery charges I have actually does have an override where if you hold down the mode button for 15 seconds it will charge but that requires you to read the manual to find that out and on that same page is a bunch of warnings including about hydrogen generation and making sure that the battery is able to be saved and not charging it for more than 6 hours and not charging one that is bloated And also checking the chemistry of the battery before charging it as well as other warnings like the fact that when you put it into that mode it disables all controls and safeties meaning that it is possible to give yourself a shock and so don't do that and so on, that's just how a lot of them are designed nowadays and unfortunately the reason for that is because people are idiots and keep getting themselves hurt and companies would rather not be here responsible for someone getting hurt so they make it more difficult whereas the old ones will happily kill you without even thinking about it. It's kind of like windows vs Linux, windows does everything to stop you deleting system files to the point where it requires quite a few commands to actually do it where as Linux will happily let you delete your entire system without even questioning what you're doing

    Hey man thanks for your channel and expertise-- I encourage you moving forward to consider becoming an actual teacher of some kind and make sure your lessons are accessable to the whole globe, because this world of waste and overproduction is going to need more techno-necromancers like you to decrease waste & pollution, and increase the world's love and respect of technology in all its eras and forms. I'm very serious about that philosophy and how your gifted skills can universalize it into the future. Thank you again.

    Love the fact you didn’t try to improve it and just made it look as it would have when new. 😊

    Great Video, if you are restoring viewers things. I have a 1939 typewriter that works but needs a nice restoration.
