This is probably the best “guitar pedals for beginners” video on here. You explained what each pedal does and demonstrated their uses really well without needing to make a 30 minute video that drags on.
Except that he didn't provide examples of the same licks with and without the pedals, so you could hear exactly what each one does to the sound. It doesn't help me figure out what pedal to get next to find the sound I want.
Nephalem Yes, but he's left out some crucial details, like which pedals enter at which point in the amp/effects loop path. Also, nothing about using an isolated power supply for each pedal, a critical part of any board. Save folks time and money by demonstrating what happens if you fail to provide isolated pedal power and end up with ten pedals worth of hissy, spitty noise.

Something I love about this video, other than revisiting it three years later--first time I had only been playing guitar a year--is you're presenting it with just your guitar, an amp, and a good but modest number of affordable pedals, sitting on the sofa. Most of the videos like this, the presenter is surrounded by gear, several super expensive guitars, and they're showing off pedals which are not only expensive but not what you would find in your average shop. Never after seeing Who Quadorphenia live in opera house Chicago, thought why more bands werent doing at least stereo. So today with technology you kids got it Great!! Lookning into now something like EHX tri parallel pedal to do more than simple chain.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge about effects and the way how they can interact with each other. I myself got an almost proper board. All what I was needing more was a wah/compressor/and phaser. I think it's now something done. I simply ordered what was missing to my usual musical instruments shop. And the three of them have been selected from a brand which I affectionate a lot. Electro-harmonix (ehx abbreaviated). I don't even imagine how the final result will sound like. Cheers from Belgium :)
I bought both the EL34 and the 6L6 last Saturday. I set them both up next to my JCM 800 and I have to say, the EL34 gets pretty close to the JCM 800 tone on the green channel with overdrive on and drive set about 2. With a TS9 Tube Screamer in front of it with level dimed, tone at 6 o'clock and drive at 0. Eq Settings were Low at 8, mid 4, trebbile 8, resonance 2, Prescence 6. Kick in that TS9 and closed my eyes, and A-B back and fourth to my 2203 JCM 800 and sounds incredibly close On red channel, same eq settings and red channel drive at 2 with a Boss SD1 overdrive in front, drive at 0, tone at 6 o'clock and level dimed it has a killer tone for the heavier stuff. I don't like the burn button, it is just way to much. I also running a CE5 Stero chorus, HOF Reverb, FlahBack2 delay and a EH 720 Looper in the effects loop and do not use the amp reverb. In front I am running Les Paul Custom Shop into a TU2 tunner, into Boss 200EQ to better shape the tone, into Morley Mark Tremonti Wah, then to Phase 90 MXR, OC5 Octave, SD1 Boss OD, and TS9 Tube Screamer. Last in Chain is NS2 Noise gate. The EQ pedal allows you to refine the tone really well. After 5 days of having both, I settled on the EL34 and returned the 6L6. The EL34 is just a little more reminiscent of the classic Marshall tone. A bit warmer, and not as harsh as the 6L6. If I was a hardcore metal player, then the 6L6 would have been my choice. For me, the EL34 is a winner. And I forgot to mention the clean channel. Same EQ settings, but I do have a dedicated eq channel on the boss EQ 200 just for clean that gives probably the best clean tone I have ever heard from any amp. I have a fender twin reverb, and a 1977 Roland Jazz Chorus 120 I usually A-B with my JCM 800 for cleans, and the tone I got out of the EL34 with the eq pedal, is surprisingly better. No need for me to lug multiple amps to the gig now. Being a diehard vintage amp snob, I was very reluctant to give this a try. But wow!! I am glad I did. The vintage stuff can stay at home now where it is safe, and this will now be my gigging amp. Less to haul around to achieve great tones all in one head versuses A-B ing 2 amps, two mics in front and two channels to dial in on front of house board. This is a win for me. Never thought I would say this, and immediatley hated it until I gave it a try. I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks. PS: I spent about 6 hours total, tone shaping with EQ 200 to each specific channel to achieve the tones I finally dig. TS9 on Green Channel with Overdrvive engaged, and SD1 for Red Channel no burn button. The burn will never be used. And one final tweak, I removed the front grill and took off the 5150 and EVH logo and put behind the grill. Looks a lot better estetically. Now it's a custom lol
@@Pickupjazz Always on the hunt for that one elusive tone. My board, order and what goes into the loop vs what's in front is constantly changing. Traditionally a vintage amp player, but the 5150 iconic if tweaked just right is a good gig amp. Leave my vintage at home where it is safe. Sold my rotovibe dunlop, now regretting it. Whats your opinion on the JHS Unicorn vibe pedal? Held it in my hands, but just didn't pull the trigger
and WRONG. Unfortunately Dunlop is a professional SET of pedals not individual pedals. The crybaby pedal requires further refinement from a Dunlop rotovibe pedal. Guitarist have wasted decades of their lives not realizing this basic information about Dunlop wah pedals. Without the rotovibe pedal the crybaby pedal makes a harsh 2080's style sound and can't activate the old-fashioned sound.
I have that same kind of setup as my little travel board. Little pedal train Jr volume wah phaser delay reverb compressor distortion. That's all you need!
If you're a beginner you don't need: TUNER, VOLUME PEDAL, COMPRESSOR, 2 OVERDRIVES, TREMOLO AND PHASER...unless your genre or style requires specifically one of those. The best all arounder is: overdrive, distortion, chorus and delay. That's it! Of course if you play ambient you'll need a volume and a big reverb...for funky and fingerstyle a compressor, for rockabilly a reverb and tremolo; Phaser if you play 70's rock or funky (but it can be very versatile), flanger for rock/metal or darkwave.
hey when you have time you definitely need to check out this channel here on youtube called “Christ forgiveness ministries” and hear the message they have. sin will drag us all down to eternity in hell fire, and we all sinned, so our only hope is in Gods mercy and grace which is this john 3:16-21: “for God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.” and romans 10:9-13: “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile-the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” God bless you friend ✝️👑💟
I like how you silently state that it's more about the playing than the effect. You don't turn it up so much that it will interfere what it's all about--the playing. And you do play well.
First tube screamer isnt transparent overdrive it boast mid a bit. Works really well on Vox amp to get something beyond that bell like chine if Vox. So 2 sounds from one..
Starting in 2009 I switched to using a stompbox, before I used digital effects. in terms of advantages analog effects are easier to operate just by turning the knob and feel how big the coloring changes. also the bypass signal is still good, the guitar tone is still thick. since I switchedto the stompbox sound engineer never complains.
Please give me advice, I am torn between starting a pedal board, with all the cables, power supply, etc... OR... getting something like Headrush Gigboard... if I go with separate pedals I would likely start with a tuner, drive, ditto looper, and either reverb or delay... with cables and power that would end up being about the cost of a Gigboard... Then, over time, I would probably build into something more, add a pedaltrain and good isolated supply, etc.. if I get the multi-effects pedal, I would imagine the digital effects would sound as good as super cheap pedals, or effects built into most practice amps....so I'm leanimg toward the Gigboard, that would be versatile and could always have stuff added to it one at a time later... This would be for a variety of sounds, blues, 60s,70s,80s rock, and some other newer stuff...nothing hard/heavy. Stuff I have looked at are: TC Polytune, Cry Baby Mini, TS Mini, MXR Sugar Drive, EHX Soul Food, TC MojoMojo(probably do 2-3 drives)...Hall of Fame 2, Flashback 2, Phase 95 or a chorus or the Mod11, and a Ditto Looper... just a tuner and a couple pedals to start, with cables and a one spot would be close to the cost of a Pod GO or Gigboard.... Any advice? This will be for noodling around at home, and letting kids play with it also, on a Mini Strat or a $250 Epiphone.... through a Marshal MG30CFX or our other Orange practice amp. Thanks for the video..... cheers
@@Balandinis , thanks for the input... do you have one or have played on one? Just now looking up some info on the new Pod GO... it seems to have some good stuff going for it, like the lower price, expression pedal for wah/volume, and more footswitches.... but seems more limited in what you can do as far as processing and how you can arrange the effects.... For now, I think 4 footswitches is enough after watching some videos on how the Gigboard works.... could always add a mini Cry Baby wah, or an expression pedal... then if I decide there is a specific effect pedal that I want, or something that isn't in the Headrush effects list...I can add regular pedals one at a time...but a multi-effects would give me a jumpstart right off the bat... gigboard size also looks like it would integrate easier into a board with 3-5 standard small or mini pedals. I will have to do more thinking, input from users who have used it is great though...
I've had the pleasure of playing the gigboards' older brother, and it sounds great, and it's versatile. Nowadays modelers/multi fx units have advanced a lot, so you can't go wrong with any of the modern ones. They won't sound as good as the originals, but they'll be close enough for most people to not know the difference. The versatility and the choices they provide are excellent, and they really let you find your own sound without spending thousands on experimentations. Binge a bunch of youtube videos on whichever choice you want to go for and decide for yourself. If you get something modern enough you won't be disappointed
Damn, I really miss playing guitar. Depression has been pretty bad for over 15 years and I can't fix it. Hoping one day I'll be able to pick up my guitar again.
What I can say is your pedalboard is awesome, you've choosen the most important effects to put in together as one killer machine... but do you have a noisy problem because I can't see any noise gate on your board?
I'm ignorant, but i need to know why you would buy an overdrive or distortion pedal if you can do it directly from your amp. I mean i have never used a pedal in my life but still i would like to understand more about them. Is it because it is easier to set the effect If you have it on a pedal during a live performance, or because you can get better effects than the amp, or because you can combine both amp and pedal, or they are just basically the same? I don't know, if someone would be so kind to answer me that would be awesome, thank you.
I still use the First gen Flashback and I love the Tape mode the best ,, Thank you so much for. Confirming I chose the right mode . It works great on slower blues tunes and ballads ,, It really fills in the bottom tones .
Very informative even for an old guitarist like me. I would like to know your amp settings. I have been suggesting to presenters to add a small PiP showing the amp settings.
Just got my first pedal the day before yesterday, which is a multi effect pedal including ‘expression pedal’-so wah, volume, and whatever else I may use it for, I still have no idea. Just that first demonstration with the wah, I’m totally doing that tomorrow! I’ve been playing less than nine months by the way. It’s funny how I’m watching this like one of those seminars on new products at the Apple Store.
The sound and the flow rocking is awesome. Good taste and nice playing man. I Have the orange phaser, the Tube screamer and the RC like you. For my honest opinion the DD8 is a nice pedal with a lot of options and sounds and the chorus pedal is simple but effective. Nice review cheers.
Thank you very much for this great video. I am a beginner and therefore it is difficult for me to choose from the different brands. It is a pity that you do not mention the model names of the different pedals. Best regards from Belgium.
Thanks, glad it was helpful! Yeah there are so many pedals out there, but hopefully this can help you start to research what you're looking for much easier now!
The tube screamer is a very mid pushed, lighter gain sound while the distortion is a higher gain sound. A lot of the time, ts pedals have soft clipping while distortions have hard clipping
Really great run-down!! I appreciate a very basic kit like this, but then again, can Compression / Boost / Tube Screamer / Distortion be combined or paired down to a more economic set to get gain from one pedal? I would stick with distortion that has a boost. Glad Flanger was kept out as 80's rock wasn't always the best sound.
wow. so many effects and i dont hear any noise. How could it be? im having problem with noise. i use my behringer umc202HD as my audio interface, but a lot of noise coming in when i plugin the guitar. any good recommendations for low noise cable?
At this time what about the pedal cabinet simulator and pedal amp simulator, considering that every event there is not always a guitar amp or even a guitar has to go directly into the mixer
With a Boss GT-100 you have all you need for a greater ton!!And in stereo! With a metronom;and tons of realy amazing effects.Must say this.Nomatter with a transistor or a tubeamp, always best sounds!btw;nice video and a nice flat, thx for the work!

Never after seeing Who Quadorphenia live in opera house Chicago, thought why more bands werent doing at least stereo. So today with technology you kids got it Great!! Lookning into now something like EHX tri parallel pedal to do more than simple chain.
This is a nice video. I'm this close to getting a Wah pedal, and this nudged me a little bit closer.
Of all the youtube stuff i have seen about pedals for use..this is by far the best
Thanks for watching!
Great video. Thanks! Grtz from The Netherlands.
I like that volume pedal after distortion but before the delay tip.
sounds cool right?
My top 10: Tuner, distortion, chorus, delay, reverb, overdrive, wah wah, looper, drum machine, pitch shifter
Kick in that TS9 and closed my eyes, and A-B back and fourth to my 2203 JCM 800 and sounds incredibly close
On red channel, same eq settings and red channel drive at 2 with a Boss SD1 overdrive in front, drive at 0, tone at 6 o'clock and level dimed it has a killer tone for the heavier stuff.
That's awesome! Thanks for sharing. The tone chasing never stops, right?!
I loved your wah explanation. Simple and effective. Amazing content
Thanks for this all killer, no filler explanation. Other videos are wordier and lack examples. Yours provides immediate empowerment!
Thanks for watching!
You are insane - I've watched this video numerous times just to listen to you rip off those little riffs. Absolutely love your sound.
Thanks for the support 🙏
Nice and clear demo...i have already of 6 pedals,,only lacking is the tremolo, wah, volume pedal, compresor and booster.
Thanks that's really helpful, you're a really great guitarist too
I literally thought all these sounds were made by the amp
These alter the signal on the way to the amp. Some amps do have a couple of these effects built in and have their own distortion sound.
@@michaelb9537 yea mine has built in stuff, really nice for beginner although it is a cheaper amp
Depends on what amp you're using. Some have built in effects, and some dont.
@@thesuperiorinferior7844 Which amp are you using ?
@@msbonamusic5381 fender mustang 1 or 2 I don't remember
Great vid! But would be dope if you mentioned the brand and model of each pedal
I have that same kind of setup as my little travel board. Little pedal train Jr volume wah phaser delay reverb compressor distortion. That's all you need!
Whats with the modded ts9? Thats not how normal ones look!
For me, my priority pedals aer: Reverb, compression, distortion, OD, and a looper :D
that tube screamer sounds perfect! thats the tone im looking for
Can you please do a full equipment list. Amp, P.A., all pedals?

JAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJA!!!
hey when you have time you definitely need to check out this channel here on youtube called “Christ forgiveness ministries” and hear the message they have. sin will drag us all down to eternity in hell fire, and we all sinned, so our only hope is in Gods mercy and grace which is this
john 3:16-21:
“for God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.”
and romans 10:9-13:
“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile-the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
God bless you friend ✝️👑💟

Lmaoooooooooo
I like how you silently state that it's more about the playing than the effect. You don't turn it up so much that it will interfere what it's all about--the playing. And you do play well.
First tube screamer isnt transparent overdrive it boast mid a bit. Works really well on Vox amp to get something beyond that bell like chine if Vox. So 2 sounds from one..
Not only did I learn a lot about pedals but I also picked up a few sweet licks from you. Cheers.
Glad you found it helpful Tate! Thanks for watching!
Why does he look like Ross from "Friends?"
Hudson Pace was just about to say that
He's Russ not Ross
payal baisoya its not a funny show
Ikr
He looks absolutely nothing like David Schwimmer...
Compressor after gain pedals (perhaps first two stacked pedals) then, perhaps boost or third gain pedal after comp…
Ross is that you?
Refreshingly strait forward
Stuff I have looked at are:
TC Polytune, Cry Baby Mini, TS Mini, MXR Sugar Drive, EHX Soul Food, TC MojoMojo(probably do 2-3 drives)...Hall of Fame 2, Flashback 2, Phase 95 or a chorus or the Mod11, and a Ditto Looper... just a tuner and a couple pedals to start, with cables and a one spot would be close to the cost of a Pod GO or Gigboard....
Any advice? This will be for noodling around at home, and letting kids play with it also, on a Mini Strat or a $250 Epiphone.... through a Marshal MG30CFX or our other Orange practice amp.
Thanks for the video..... cheers
Get the gigboard. It's great
@@Balandinis , thanks for the input... do you have one or have played on one?
This by far the most helpful video on petals that I've found
Glad it was helpful!
Damn, I really miss playing guitar. Depression has been pretty bad for over 15 years and I can't fix it. Hoping one day I'll be able to pick up my guitar again.
We hope you can find your way back to the music 🙏
Can relate to that...I’m bipolar and when in depression ( bipolar low ) I’m stuffed...no motivation at all
HEY!
I just wanna say that you played amazingly
I've been playing for like 2 yrs and this is still way above me😀
i bought myself my first pedal and it's the Boss DS-1 :)
what should I get next?
Depends on what you want to use it for
Equalizer and Noise Gate. your sound will became cleaner, no noises and powerful
I could listen to that wah wah all day long!
I still use the First gen Flashback and I love the Tape mode the best ,, Thank you so much for. Confirming I chose the right mode . It works great on slower blues tunes and ballads ,, It really fills in the bottom tones .
Dunlop makes a professional SET of pedals not individual pedals.
Very informative even for an old guitarist like me. I would like to know your amp settings. I have been suggesting to presenters to add a small PiP showing the amp settings.
It looks so great! Thanks a lot for video, very simple
And in case people forget to mention it...you've got serious guitar chops. I hope your channel contains videos of you playing live👏🎸😊
Finally! best explanations. Thank you.
You're welcome!
Thank you Ross, glad to see the music path worked out for ya!

Lol who cares
That's so he can walk quietly while recording video. The video is about guitar pedal sounds, not shoes on floor sounds.
Super nice video, and great player! I wish i was able to play all those genres
Ah great - I really needed this knowledge. Thanks!
So the Tube Screamer and the Overdrive pedals do the same thing...?
The tube screamer is a very mid pushed, lighter gain sound while the distortion is a higher gain sound. A lot of the time, ts pedals have soft clipping while distortions have hard clipping
1:18 I love that sound!!
Well said!
If your amp did not have reverb, would you consider setting on your amp and actually be the last, in line, prior to going into the amp?
This is such an amazing rig with an amazing sound!
Where can I find that little input box you have under your pedal board that you connected your wah pedal to before going into the actual pedal chain ?
I need two. Distortion and the RC pedal.
wow. so many effects and i dont hear any noise. How could it be?
im having problem with noise. i use my behringer umc202HD as my audio interface, but a lot of noise coming in when i plugin the guitar.
any good recommendations for low noise cable?
Great video seriously....gonna look into getting more pedals soon. I needed this!
At this time what about the pedal cabinet simulator and pedal amp simulator, considering that every event there is not always a guitar amp or even a guitar has to go directly into the mixer
sick riffs and licks man
Agreed 🤘
Very nice demo, love your mini board setup
Thank you! Cheers!
Fantastic video mate. Cheers
Pretty good explanation of what's going on and how to use
Thanks! and thanks for watching!
Thank you soooo much. So well explained, well filmed and just great content.

With a Boss GT-100 you have all you need for a greater ton!!And in stereo! With a metronom;and tons of realy amazing effects.Must say this.Nomatter with a transistor or a tubeamp, always best sounds!btw;nice video and a nice flat, thx for the work!
Thanks for sharing. Great for beginners!
Hi, Well done. Exactly what I need. Pedaltrain jr … what power supply and extras (connecting plugs, mounting device) are installed? Thx for advice. CU on stage
What custom guitar is that? Sounds nice and looks neat and beautifully strong (due to that knobs)
I Love your lessons. Great guitar playing. Great pedalboard. What model Fender Stratocaster is that?
a very NEAT, SIMPLE yet USEFUL setup! nice!
ive been getting into playing the guitar and had no idea these exist... lol
Would a compressor pedal help with tapping I.e. when I tap, my hammer-ons are a good bit quieter than the pull offs
Absolutely if anything that's what i would say they are the best for.
That or slap...
