@@Yogitee18 Pull-off is a technique where you play the note by only your fretting hand, without picking the string with your picking hand. Pull up refers to pulling up a whammy on a guitar equipped with a tremolo type bridge that is set up to float.
Playing-wise he’s good... instrument selection-wise for this video and some of the comments regarding the technical nature of the instruments are just bad. On the first point, if you’re going to do a “main types of electric guitars” video I’m sorry but you can’t pick a 335 over a Les Paul. 335s are great and arguably more flexible than a Les Paul and many people prefer them but they’re simply far more niche in terms of quantities sold than a Les Paul and that’s what this video is supposed to be about. A 4-way video with Tele, Strat, Les Paul and 335 would have been defensible... a 3-way HAS to be Tele, Strat and Les Paul... a 3-way with what this video is meant to be about cannot be defended without one of the guitars being a Les Paul. It’s as simple as that. On the technical/constructional comments my favourite screw-up comment was that the hollow sections of the 335 are there to contribute to sustain, which is totally the opposite of the reality. Solid body guitars were literally invented to enhance sustain, especially at volume... and before anyone says anything, feedback, which the hollow sections to contribute to creating, is NOT the same as sustain. He did also demonstrated the Clapton “woman tone” on the bridge pickup when it’s widely acknowledged that it’s a neck humbucker pickup sound. 🤦🏼♂️

I just bought first electricguitar and 2 amps for $60. Here I learn it's a Stratocaster (style). Now to learn how to play it. If I'm a quarter as good as this guy that's a good start. 62nd birthday present to myself.
You clearly have a great attitude to life. Learning is an integral ingredient to happiness and guitar learning in particular! Make a resolution to play at least 10 minutes a day and you'll see how you progress 👍
That’s great! And for $60 sounds like you got a fantastic deal. Have fun! I learned a new term today that I think is a great description of my talent level even though I’ve been playing for some 50 years-advanced beginner.
The guitar that's right for you is the guitar that makes you want to pick up and play. There are no boxes with certain guitars only being used for certain genres. If you love metal but like the feel of a jazzy guitar the most, then get that one. If you want to play blues but a metal V shape guitar is most comfortable for you then get that. Realistically you can play any genre on any instrument. The right guitar is the one that feels the best for you, not the one you think should get for a certain genre
In a general sense, I see it as light and twangy (Tele) midrange (Strat) deeper and heavier (Les Paul), but if you have the right effects and amp you can make any of them sound like each other or better.
But it's so true! Tele in my opinion is such an underrated guitar. It's twang makes it absolutelly great for Rock and Country, you will always be distinguished in a mix. The Bridge pickup if equipped with noiseless pup can be a great metal and Djent machine And the neck pickup KILLS it when it comes to funk. Overall great guitar.
Generally speaking, the Tele is the best if you play many types of music and only have one guitar. I like the Strat for Blues, and a Les Paul or SG for hard rock . The semi hollow body would round out my dream collection for R+B /Jazz. With Harley Benton, AIO, Wolf guitars and others these days, you can afford a second or third axe. I bought a HB TE-52na for $160 and it plays great and stays in tune! With minor upgrades, these guitars are actually ok to gig with. I don’t think you necessarily need a Gibson or Fender anymore.
You could do the Nashville Mod Tele which essentially adds an extra middle pickup for clucky Strat sounds, and usually blending pot wiring for more diversity. Session players like these since they cover so much in one guitar. If somebody were ordering a Warmoth kit, the contoured Tele body would be a smart upgrade. But you can get used to the blockiness of the traditional Leo design. It's beautifully ugly.
For buyers/players outside the USA, US brands like Fender and Gibson are ridiculously overpriced due price gouging and the USD exchange rate, and their Squier and Epiphone segments still out price but more importantly, outclassed by contemporary brands from Asia like Ibanez, Yamaha, Cort and though now to a less significant degree, Harley Benton before impost of the 'COVID levy' on international shipping COVID levy to ROW effectively killed the value incentive of its direct etail sales model vs buying other Asian origin brands locally. My 'Tele' is a Cort Manson Stage Series Classic TC, my 'Strat' is a Yamaha Pacifica 612VIIFM, my 'Les Paul' is a Harley Benton SC Custom, and my 'ES-335' is an Ibanez AS93FM. Who needs Gibson, Fender, Squier or Epiphone in 2022?!!!
ive been acoustic guy my whole life, been researching and searching up a ton of videos on the differences. no one has made more sense than you so far. Thank you!
If your an acoustic guy, get hollowbody. The new worn Epi Casino’s are a steal at just over 400 new...I’m a mostly acoustic player, and I love my Casino. They have p90 pick-ups too, which are kind in-between single and humbucker.
@@epitaphboi4816 You can get a squier bullet for 150. It's Fender's affordable line of guitars, and I think it's meant for beginners. I'm sure there are a lot of affordable guitars online, but squier is the first one that comes to mind for me. I recently got back into guitar after quitting. So i'm kind of on a video binge right now
Thank you! I've watched dozens of videos for beginners and you are the first to compare the different major types, show what all the knobs and switches do, and provide a concise and comprehensive demonstration of the different sounds for each.
The Fenders are more comfortable. The trem system in the strat is annoying if you don't use it. The tele is pleasingly simple. A hard tail strat with no trem is worth considering.
Good call on the 335, no other guitar can cover the grounds that a hollowbody, strat, and tele can cover together, except for prog/metal/high gain sounds, but slightly modifying any of those 3 work just a well
I honestly had a strat in mind before buying but I bought tele since I had no idea what I should get and I just based it off the colors and aesthetic of the guitar😭 but now I'm glad knowing tele is a really versatile guitar
9:38 .... ... Does anyone know this song? ... it's been sung by a girl, I have heard it only one time in the radio many many years ago.... .... .. meanwhile found it out: these chords so strongly remind me of Minnie Riperton's "loving you".. a tune popping out of a different life, ... a better time?
My go-to is the 335-style semi-hollowbody, mainly because I can coax such an enormous variety of tones out of it. Of course, it also depends on what you're trying to achieve, and if it's single coil sound you're after, I think most of us would reach for a Strat, However, and this is key, for reasons that I still haven't been able to figure out yet, there are certain single coil tones that are only achievable with a Telecaster. Mind you, I've bend trying to get these infernal instruments to submit to my will for nearly fifty-five years, and though I have had some rather limited success from time to time, I stand by the above assertions, with one important caveat (cue the hate mail) : tone begins at the hands, tone comes from the hands, tone originates AT THE HANDS. I won't be dragged into another pointless discussion about this, but after all these years and all the countless rigs, I remain convinced that it's our fingers that are the most important factor in determining tone : how we express ourselves comes primarily from how we touch the instrument. All right, now, you kids go fight it out amongst yourselves .... 😎
This is the best explanation/demo for understanding different guitar sounds and pickup arrangements that I have seen on youtube. Thank you so much for this.
You didn’t mention scale length. I don’t have the biggest of hands - about average - and I’m preferring Gibson-Style & Fender Mustang Guitars because it’s easier to stretch to hit notes on those guitars. Gibson guitars are 24.75”, whereas Fender Tele & Strat are 25.5” - makes a huge difference when playing. Also - Fender Mustang is even shorter at 24” - really fun to play. PRS is in between Fender and Gibson’s at 25”.
3 Card Monty . I agree. Also, the longer scale length of the Fenders contributes to a brighter sound (one reason they are favored in country music to achieve the desired twang). Gibsons generally have a mellower tone because of the shorter scale. Granted, choice of strings, effects and obviously talent matter greatly but scale length should not be overlooked.
@@johnkelly748 Yep! 25.5" + good quality single coils = very nice bright sound! Even the fingerboard material - maple: a bit brighter or rosewood: a bit warmer - counts! I might be an out-of-the -fashion guy, but I prefer single coils to humbs.
@@gordospeti I've fallen in love with mini-humbuchers. I have a full size HB in the neck of my tele, and I want to either get a mini-humbucker or a Lipstick humbucker from a Danelectro
There is no such thing as an overated guitar. Its simply a matter of preference, because some guitar styles are more popular doesn't mean they are overated. Good video! 🙏🤟
A versatile guitar player will end up owning a Strat, a Tele, a 335 or similar, a Les Paul, and a high end acoustic. It could take a couple decades to settle on these and you might include a nice shred guitar... tons of good ones. You might include Rickenbacker and Gretsch like I did. You might get a couple basses... You might buy guitars based on particular amps you like. There is so much choice. Don’t be a “what guitar do I play” guitar player.
I would disagree I’ve been playing for a decade and the only guitar which ever feels right to play for hours on end is a strat. Granted I have about ten different strats now for different configurations, tones and styles of music this is what suits me best.
How is It that in 20+ years of playing a strat have I never thought about tapping the bridge to get thay wammy effect without having the bar in. Mind blown
Rock player with a 335 is very true - I'm actually friends with the man who used to run the Gibson Memphis plant and he rocks I'm certain a 335 in his band.
*made- since the 335s of the recent last years have been mostly lemons off the wall for me. Last decent one I touched was one from the early 2000's that felt like a 335 should.
Epiphone Les Paul is a good rock /starter guitar IMHO. Jackson Dinky for metal/shredders. Strat for blues/country leads. Semi-Hollows for soulful blues/jazz leads & rhythms. A Tele is a do-all axe & durable too. Great video! It's the journey that makes music a way of life. Rock on.
I'm so embarrassed lol. First time I played a guitar was back in 1991. Friend taught me the first handful of bars to the song (take a guess...) Stairway to Heaven. Awkward at first but then I got the hang of it and then it took me a day to pick out the rest of the notes and memorize them all. That first help from my friend was all the lessons I ever had. Played here and there. Always have been a keyboardist so guitar wasn't my thing so I barely played that year. Got w my then boyfriend and all his pals loved metal music (heavy to death metal). I ended up listening to and self teaching myself a ton of Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax etc music on their guitars. It's now Oct 2021 and, after watching 5 minutes of your vid, I finally know what all those bars are called (pickups) and what exactly that lever does and what exactly the tone dial actually does. I know. I'm shocked also lol. I have no clue what those black dots are on the neck. I just listen to stuff then play it. I can't read a lick of music for keyboard or guitar. Been playing the first since I was 5 where I went to the piano and perfectly played Dolly Parton's "9 to 5" after a few hours listening to the song over and over and picking out all the notes. Guitar was just a very rare thing. Not even sure what the string names are. Don't ask me if frets have actual names. I can whip out a huge symphony on keys as fast as I can think up the notes, can make album after album on a DAW, and can play some good Slayer etc on a guitar, picked up a trumpet for the first time in my life and played a few songs perfectly as soon as I felt where the notes were, but your vid up to the 5 minite mark (so far; must keep watching)has taught me SO MUCH about things I just ignored for decades since guitar wasn't my choice instrument. It's never too late to learn a thing.
Love that butterscotch telecaster... You can play about anyting with one . .. One of my favorite is James Burton he played with Ricky Nelson, Elvis Presley if you name it I believe he's been there...... FOR MY PLAYING STYLE I THINK IT'S THE BEST GUITAR EVER BEEN MADE....
sounds like your an incredible session musician! Well done! love the bebop style phrases on the Gibson. All styles seem spot on and make great sense for the settings!
I forgot I was here for a refresher on guitar types, and got lost in the flawless vibrations of your playing.. You've clearly put in the work, but more specifically you ride that knife-edge of a sweet spot, where all aspects are perfectly in balance, the accuracy, clarity, flair, stamina, versatility, all on point
what does it offer sonically over the 3 in the video, or any other solid body guitar with humbuckers?? it has a sound of its own sure, but its more of a vibe/specialty sound, not hugely versatile to impose itself clearly over the strat,tele,335 type categories. imo its above jazzmasters and deans, and alongside Ibanez and PRS, etc. for versatility and usability
Y'all dont know that super strat is the best and most versatile guitar. I can sound like a strat, les pauls and even tele. The fun thing is that once you use a superstrat, you never feel to stop playing.
I didn't recognize the brand of that "T-style guitar. Apparently it's a custom guitar maker called Chapin. Cost between 2.5 to 3.5K per piece. Don't understand why anyone would pay those prices for a copy when they could get a custom original fender for that price.
My fave guitar is the one I am playing. I pick up a Tele and I'm hooked for a month or more. I begin playing it for everything saying to myself "...Man I really can get anything I need outta the tele." Time goes by... Then I pick up the LP and say the same thing. I take it to every gig. Then I realize I am neglecting the Strat, and pull it out....Then I get stuck on it. All different, but I can play country, rock, blues, or R&B on any of em.
This guy plays exactly how I would imagine myself playing if I actually mastered the guitar

Anyone know the chords at 7:14? They sound so nice and would be easy to put into some compositions
2-5-1 also, it's really common
Looks like A-9, Dmin7b5 (half diminished), Gmaj7
Fun fact that's the most common jazz chord progression so you like jazz.
if you can only get one, get a strat - most versatile and get a fender if you can afford it.
Well I kinda disagree..Strats are great ofc..but play i play Gibson Firebird. .ES335...and a Les Paul...you cannot beat those guitars PERIOD!!!!!!
The Fenders are more comfortable. The trem system in the strat is annoying if you don't use it. The tele is pleasingly simple. A hard tail strat with no trem is worth considering.
@ agree. Have an ultra tele and it’s insanely comfortable. Like the strat too tho
Good call on the 335, no other guitar can cover the grounds that a hollowbody, strat, and tele can cover together, except for prog/metal/high gain sounds, but slightly modifying any of those 3 work just a well
*SH Tele stands up*
Well yee-haw, bubsie!
I honestly had a strat in mind before buying but I bought tele since I had no idea what I should get and I just based it off the colors and aesthetic of the guitar😭 but now I'm glad knowing tele is a really versatile guitar
I like that chord progression at 9:37
Gives me summer walker vibes love it
@@laylaxvi any songs of her that sound somewhat like that?
@@laylaxvi fr I thought summer walker
@@joseprudencio7627 Sorry I saw ur comment late. I’d say her songs ‘session 32’ and ‘playing games’ have similar chords :)

9:38 .... ... Does anyone know this song?
... it's been sung by a girl, I have heard it only one time in the radio many many years ago....
....
.. meanwhile found it out: these chords so strongly remind me of Minnie Riperton's "loving you".. a tune popping out of a different life, ... a better time?
Minnie had an amazing voice!
After 3 years nobody gave enough shit to fight about it thats nice
This is the best explanation/demo for understanding different guitar sounds and pickup arrangements that I have seen on youtube. Thank you so much for this.
s/o to the audio guy, sounds amaaazing
Yes definitely
I didn't know Ross from Friends carried on to play and show case guitars.
Scale length! Yours is a very important comment! Not everybody is born with big hands! :)
*cries in regret at having to sell his DC Boardwalk because the short scale length was a poor fit*
@@gordospeti I've fallen in love with mini-humbuchers. I have a full size HB in the neck of my tele, and I want to either get a mini-humbucker or a Lipstick humbucker from a Danelectro
Leaned more about guitars in 12:00 than I had my entire life. Great video!
There is no such thing as an overated guitar. Its simply a matter of preference, because some guitar styles are more popular doesn't mean they are overated. Good video! 🙏🤟
Very helpful in showing off the basics of pickups and what the knobs do, as well as the terminology for the different sounds.
That first guitar is beautiful, I want one exactly like that our similar
Telecaster is the type of guitar for me.
Telecaster is the right guitar type for everyone, most people just don't know/haven't accepted it yet.
@@forfrigsakes3330 they look like shit tho
Same, BUT, with a rock/metal sound. And a custom body. Like how James root has a custom jazzmaster
@@forfrigsakes3330 I own a Tele and I love it but for metal something with dual humbuckers will always work better.
@@probablypapasmurf3786 I'm getting a tele with dual humbuckers and split coil in a couple days, from when I tried it in store I really like it
This guy was absolutely shredding throughout this. Great vid man
A versatile guitar player will end up owning a Strat, a Tele, a 335 or similar, a Les Paul, and a high end acoustic.
@@danielleelizabeth9417 I used to only play one configuration for the first 20 years but now after 40 years playing, I enjoy the assortment. Cheers!

How is It that in 20+ years of playing a strat have I never thought about tapping the bridge to get thay wammy effect without having the bar in. Mind blown
Right???? Though you need the right type of strat, some of them dont bend without the whammy bar
Papo Fresquito | your bridge just has to be floating
Very useful, instructional, personal feeling video. Thanks a lot for helping me understand my stratocaster a bit better!
Jesus Christ died for your sins please repentt for the kingdom of heaven is at handddd
All you need is a T style and a 335 style. Both are so versatile and can fit in most genres. Really nice playing, by the way!
Good and clear presentation of the basics.
Glad it was helpful!
I’m a fender guy
But god that ES-335 was so nice
Rock player with a 335 is very true - I'm actually friends with the man who used to run the Gibson Memphis plant and he rocks I'm certain a 335 in his band.
Didn't know Egon from Ghostbusters rocked that hard
Top 5 most iconic guitars
-chuck berrys ES335
-Van Halens frankenstrat
-Jimi Hendrix’s Strat
-Slashes gold top les Paul
-Angus Young’s SG
He is just radiating such positivity! Best regards from Germany 🇩🇪
Thanks 😊 I like the red one but pretty sure out my range , I will go with a Stratocaster as this will be my first guitar 🎸
Glad you used a 335 and not the les Paul. The 335 is the best guitar Gibson makes.
Agree, the ES-335 is an icon of an instrument, but so is the ES-175.
nah les paul is better imo
*made- since the 335s of the recent last years have been mostly lemons off the wall for me. Last decent one I touched was one from the early 2000's that felt like a 335 should.
That's your opinion.
uhm wtf no?
Fell in love with 9:40
Epiphone Les Paul is a good rock /starter guitar IMHO.
Wow, smooth playing. Respect
I'll go with the semihollow
This is an amazing video...clearly no bullshit because you can hear everything change. Great player!
Love how this video is straight to the point.. here's the guitar.. here's what it does.. and heres how it all sounds.. thanks have a greta day

sounds like your an incredible session musician! Well done! love the bebop style phrases on the Gibson.
Rock on! Thanks for watching! 🤘
I'm always going to be partial to the fender mustang. The darker sounding single coils have a magic tone for me.
How many jazz frets do u play per free bird through blues chords?
Adding an LP to this video would’ve made it PERFECT
Umm, im gonna take all three
Love the structure of this and detailed description of the pickup configurations. So easy, thank you!
How informative is this. If you're a teacher, you're definitely the best.
Btw, no Les Paul???

WhiskeyA1 no, fuck YOU
what does it offer sonically over the 3 in the video, or any other solid body guitar with humbuckers?? it has a sound of its own sure, but its more of a vibe/specialty sound, not hugely versatile to impose itself clearly over the strat,tele,335 type categories. imo its above jazzmasters and deans, and alongside Ibanez and PRS, etc. for versatility and usability
He just flexin his skills
Y'all dont know that super strat is the best and most versatile guitar. I can sound like a strat, les pauls and even tele. The fun thing is that once you use a superstrat, you never feel to stop playing.
The body shape bothers me
I didn't recognize the brand of that "T-style guitar. Apparently it's a custom guitar maker called Chapin. Cost between 2.5 to 3.5K per piece. Don't understand why anyone would pay those prices for a copy when they could get a custom original fender for that price.
Nice playing. Last guitar I'd offload in tough times is the Tele. Versatile, ballsy, and it looks and feels good.
I choose the Tele, and I'm a metalhead.
Im a country boy and choose a tele too like waylon jennings did
Good job, fine skills!
I’m always the guy with an sg
AC/DC inspired me to play guitar I got a gibson sg🤘🤘🤘
My fave guitar is the one I am playing. I pick up a Tele and I'm hooked for a month or more. I begin playing it for everything saying to myself "...Man I really can get anything I need outta the tele." Time goes by... Then I pick up the LP and say the same thing. I take it to every gig. Then I realize I am neglecting the Strat, and pull it out....Then I get stuck on it. All different, but I can play country, rock, blues, or R&B on any of em.
Thank you for explaining the differences between the knobs, tone, pickups engaged, etc. And boy would I love to have an ES-335. Sounds like butter.
what a lovely introvert teacher
severally disappointed you didn't cover extended range djent machines
It's really which one to get first, you know your Ganna end up with them all anyways.
