    I’ve been wearing Jicky for thirty years (its centenary!) and Mouchoir de Monsieur for nearly twenty. From time to time, people close to me unwisely derided these grand perfumes - even objected to me wearing them. Many of them have long been ostracized, but the Guerlains are still with me. As always, well done gentlemen - greetings from Greece 🇬🇷!

    Great reviews! I own L'Heure Bleue , Mitsouko, Shalimar and Vetiver and I wear them on rotation. Recently I'm obsessed with Mitsouko, I wore it for 2 weeks straight and I cannot get enough of it. It's such a mystery, I'm surprised every time. Every time it smells differently, either creamier, or mossier, or peachier. Masterpiece.

    Amazing video as always guys! I smelt Apres Londee a few years and was immediately transported back about 35 years to my primary school, because I remembered that my primary school teacher smelt of it. I don't think that I had smelt it in the intervening years, which is pretty amazing, given how strong the recollection was! It's a masterpiece as are many of the others. Cheers

    Hi Guys,Shalimar Perfume.I picked up a flacon of 1962 extract with the date stamp on the base.The juice was lovely and dark,deep and smoky at the start with layers of vanilla coming through.You will not believe how strong it is.Put a little bit on the back of your arm in bed,in the morning will not believe how filthy the bed sheets smell from those raw natural ingredients.

    If there ever was a fragrance house I would bow down to it would be Guerlain! This is the most exciting video to start the weekend. I have a vintage bottle EDT of Habit Rouge (says No. 844)
    On the front of the box. Big square 200ml bottle. It smells quite different from newer EDT. It’s a Renaissance baroque style fragrance! Just eye rolling perfection in a bottle.

      Mike Lucotch indeed! I’m thinking to start with a bottle per season!: Habit Rouge for spring/summer, Heritage for autumn, Shalimar for winter, and Mitsouko for spring/fall.

    • @MLukacs
      @MLukacs 5 років тому

      @@pmrp12 , I like where you're going. I did that...and more. I was a signature scent type of guy until last fall. Then, I started to buy scents for the seasons. Now, I pick a fragrance in the morning based not only on the season but on the day's agenda, my attire, the weather, etc. I only own Habit Rouge in an EDP concentration, but you'll notice in the video, the EDT concentration was sampled in the video. I've not sampled the EDT concentration, but it seems like it would be more appropriate for summer than the EDP. Notice how our hosts talked about the "thickness" of some EDP concentrations? Habit Rouge drys down to a vanilla that to me would seem thick for summer. Also, I own Heritage in an EDP concentration and the sample in the video is an EDT. However, I think Heritage for autumn with amber, sandalwood and oakmoss in the base, is a great choice! I've only smelled Mitsouko on myself once. The opening and heart notes reminded me of something that my aunt wore, but it's the oakmoss base that makes Mitsouko attractive. Notice how our hosts referred to the "journey" on which a fragrance leads you. Mitsouko begins in one direction and just as you think you know where you're headed, she "leads you to a bed of oakmoss" if it were. Spring and fall are great choices for Mitsouko! Shalimar takes you on a longer journey, because she, being the "Lady of the House", doesn't reveal herself as quickly as her sisters and cousins. You really need to spend time with her before she unfolds her warm vanilla. I refer to these fragrances in the feminine, because it's almost as if after you spend some time with them, they disclose something that's been hidden in plain sight for hours. It's like developing a relationship with a lady. It'll be chit chat up front with the top notes and maybe some lively conversation with the heart, but she won't reveal the base until she gets to know you. Winter is a great time to get to know Shalimar! Another outstanding choice. One thing that's important to remember is that this is part of your journey as you move into Geurlain fragrances. I've offered my opinion, but you don't have to agree with anyone's opinion. Be open to new things, and you'll know what you like. Wear what pleases you, and for Heaven's sake, don't try to please the crowd. I learned that a many other things at boisdejasmin.com. Please visit that site, if you haven't. Victoria will help you. Also, read Perfumes: The A-Z Guide by Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez if you haven't yet. They'll teach you to discover what you like. Remember to try new fragrances with decants, instead of blind buys, if possible. I learned this from Victoria. Buy decants and wear what you're thinking about a few times before spending money on a 50 ml or 100 ml bottle. A 100 ml bottle will last for years if you only wear a fragrance during one season. If you go with two per season, they'll last twice as long, and so on. All in all, your choices are solid. When you order your decants, you might want to add a decant of Vetiver, if you haven't tried it . It's referred to by many as the gold standard for vetiver fragrances, and I've worn it in every season. Enjoy this new part of your journey, and as our gracious hosts say, "Happy sniffing!"

      Mike Lucotch thanks so much for your detailed reply! I’ve been curating a fragrance collection/wardrobe for about 3 years now, and just now really understanding Guerlain. I too select my fragrance for the day in very much the same way as you-based on mood, my schedule of events, climate, etc. As a result, I started a seasonal wardrobe about a year ago, creating rotations of a handful of scents for each of the four seasons. It’s a great way to ensure you not only wear your entire collection, but you actually get to miss your favorite scents before rediscovering them again!
      I’m also a huge advocate of decants/samples before purchasing a full bottle. My logic is that if I make it through a round or two of decants and I miss the scent, on to the wishlist it goes. Then, I look at the season it evokes most for me and begin to start assembling a lineup. If it fits a role in my wardrobe for an upcoming season, it’s purchase is given higher priority. Despite having a spreadsheet for all this, the process is much more loose than it sounds 😉.
      Agreed on Luca Turin and Bois de Jasmin as being excellent resources. I also like Now Smell This, The Scentertainer, and ClaireV from Basenotes and Take One Thing Off. Between them and folks like our hosts here, Max Heusler, Toons Reviews, CascadeScents, and Greggieboy76, I have plenty of resources and data to pull from. Not to mention the active and gracious community on r/fragrance on Reddit.
      I’ve tried Guerlain Vetiver but it didn’t resonate with me right away. Rather, I got an odd olive note off my skin. I’ll definitely revisit at some point though. I currently look to Grey Vetiver (clearly inspired by), Encre Noire, and Terre d’Hermès for my go-to vetivers.

    10 yrs ago should have made Patricia de Nicolai the in-house perfumer instead of Wasser, the post-LVMH era wouldn't have been so bad and it would still more or less have stayed in the family.

      I used to also be of this opinion, but in the end I'm glad it didn't happen. Now Patricia can create her fragrances with complete artistic freedom without the limitations and burdens of working under a big company like LVMH. For me it doesn't matter she doesn't work under her family's name, her creations show she is the one and only true torchbearer of the Guerlain heritage.

    Great video (as usual). I love Guerlain. Lidge opened my fragrance journey. I have the vintage Derby, and a decant of the modern. I personally think the modern is better. I think it smell more citrusy, light and is more wearable. The old version is being accused for smelling like an «old woman», which I may not agree, but when comparing it to the new I can see the point.

  • @MLukacs
    @MLukacs 5 років тому +1

    Gents, thank you for this much anticipated and outstanding installment of Wafts from the Loft! You are the best! I wholeheartedly agree with everything you expressed in this video. I'm happy that you emphasized "the journey", because the classic Guerlain fragrances take you on a journey as they dry down on your skin. When I first encountered the current formulation of Shalimar EDP, it changed 3 times over many hours as it dried down. Mitsouko offers a wonderful journey as well.
    The history of the House of Guerlain is interwoven with world history, and it's one of the aspects that is most appealing about this house. For instance the ties that L'Heure Bleue and Mitsouko have to World War I or that Shalimar had to the 20's and Flappers make those fragrances much more interesting. I remember a picture that my grandmother showed me of her dressed as a Flapper, when she was a young woman. She had her whole life ahead of her and could've been wearing Shalimar, if she could afford a little. Although maybe not, because "good girls" didn't smoke, dance the tango or wear Shalimar, right? The crazy thing is that even the current version of Shalimar, with all the restrictions, is still outstanding. Other houses simply can't compare. As you said, "Where are they now?" Or, better put, "There's designer, niche and Guerlain." I haven't experienced a Vintage Shalimar extrait, but it's on my bucket list.
    I noticed you were sampling a Vintage version of Vetiver. I'm wearing Vetiver now and need to try that. I'll have to try the EDT version of Habit Rouge, because I only own the EDP version. Last fall and winter, I wore it every time I wore red, which was frequently, as it's my favorite color. I see you have some left in your Vintage version of Heritage EDT. I wear the EDP version and need to try the EDT version of that, as well. It's important to reemphasize the point you made on the cost of the current formulations of these classics. Their value can't be stressed enough.
    I'm glad you mentioned Eau de Guerlain before signing off. That's my new go-to fragrance this summer. I bought a Vintage Mini, and I've not smelled the current formulation. It's very nice! Also, I bought a decant of Mouchoir de Monsieur, based on your earlier recommendation was impressed by it too. I see why you fell in love with this house too. At the end, you mentioned Samsara, which is also very nice.
    Don't feel bad about ending on a sad note. The current offerings don't compare to Guerlain's classics. I purchased the L'Homme Ideal EDP after trying a 1 ml sample and find that the cherry note is a bit much. I'd easily put that on the trading block for the classics, especially older formulations. As you mentioned, the Guerlain traditions have left the company, and that's okay, especially after the acquisition. If Guerlain keeps offering the classics without continually reformulating them and at the current outstanding value, I can live with it.
    In summary, I propose that this video is played on Day 1 in Fragrances 101 every place that people begin to learn about the world of perfumery or fragrances in general. This is where I will send anyone who has any interest in fragrances, men or women. If someone simply samples the fragrances that you've selected to sample or even mention in this collection, they will certainly begin to build their foundation on bedrock. Damn the front-loaded fragrances at the department store counter. Long live the classics! Thank you very much, and Happy Sniffing!!

      It’s great isn’t it? I like Eau de Cologne Imperiale and Eau de Cologne du Coq but Eau de Guerlain offers something more, not only as an EDT, but as a citrus fragrance. I’m not usually impressed by citrus fragrances, but I must agree with Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez on this one. How does the current formulation smell?

    • @WaftsfromTheLoft
      @WaftsfromTheLoft  5 років тому +1

      Yes, I normally struggle with lemon, because of the bathroom cleaner association, but the lemon in Eau is one that I can get in with, and the Provençal herbs that really linger in the drydown elevate Eau to something special

      Quick update - today, a 250 ml flacon of Eau de Guerlain that I bought on eBay arrived. I think it's a 1975 vintage. 98% full. Kept dark and dry. It's a work of art. The transitions from top to heart to bass notes are subtle and smooth. They literally don't make fragrances like this anymore. I know that I'm blessed having an eBay purchase of a vintage fragrance go so well. It makes me want to see out vintage formulations. Now, I need to research what to do next, so I preserve the fragrance (i.e. decanting).

    My favourites and the ones I also acquired so far are:
    Un Dimanche á la Campagne, an amazing almost minty herbal Neroli fragrance.
    Bois d'Armenie, cozy soft Incense.
    Spiritueuse Double Vanille, which smells pretty much like pure vanilla extract.
    There are many other good offerings from the brand. I like Jicky and Mitsouko but to me they smell too opulent and also very very old-fashioned. That does not make them bad in any way, but I have a hard time getting used to them or seeing me pulling them off.

    Great house, great video, thank you! Favourite Guerlain probably Samsara which has been totally destroyed now. Was my third "signature" straight when it was released. Chamade is also beautiful but requires a very special occasion to be fully appreciated. The releases after 1980s I have not enjoyed too much.

    My older Brother got a bottle of Habit Rouge EDC in 1988, and two 5 ml sample of Vetiver and Derby. I remembered Habit Rouge use to be a lot sweeter and bolder, comparing with the EDT today, which at that time I didn't like. Vetiver as I remember has less nutmeg and more tobacco. Derby was my favorite at that time with the prominent masculine leather note. Sometime ago I tried the new Derby in a department store and it is not the same thing, very mild and almost unisex.

    Aw, you guys should not have stopped at l'Homme Ideal, which is super-boring. You really ought to smell Songe d'un Bois d'Ete, for one, which is, I feel, a true masterpiece, and by itself really keeps the proper Guerlain spirit alive. And then the Absolus d'Orient line in general has some real stunners. Cuir Intense, Musc Noble, Oud Essentiel, and Santal Royal, all really great. Even though choosing Wasser to lead was a provocative decision, he is really quite talented.

      WIll _ try to read about and sample as many of the fragrances featured and mentioned here. Watch this video a few more times and take notes. Then, order decants and see what you like. Don’t spray them on paper, spray them on your skin and keeping going back to them through the day. Then, try to wear them a couple times. Do all this, and you’ll be very satisfied when you purchase a bottle. Also, you’ll have a better foundation in fragrances than 99% of people your age.

      Now had some experience with both the EDT and EDP. I love the fruit in the EDT as it has an almost sherbet like quality. Shalimar is definitely a classic feeling fragrance but not completely dated. The EDP cranks up the smokiness. To me it comes across like cigarette smoke which I think adds to the character. Thanks for the recommendation. Cannot wait to work my way through Guerlain.

      @@WaftsfromTheLoft such as Aqua Allegoria, Mon Guerlain (and its variants), Le Petit Robe Noir (and its variants). Sadly I think my taste is very 'unoriginal' and 'pedestrian' in that I like 'light' scents. I.e. nothing that reminds me of a wood, leather, incense and other dark notes used in perfumes and appreciated by people who seem to like oriental perfumes. At the moment my best perfume is Burberry Her, Mon Paris, La Vie Est Belle Intensement and Si Passione. So possibly 'childlike' tastes to you, but to me, scents that I feel I can completely emerse myself into. Does this sound like gibberish ?

    Jacques Guerlain is probably the greatest (if not the 2nd greatest) perfumer of all time.

      @WaftsfromTheLoft  3 роки тому

      2nd after who?

    • @992turbos
      @992turbos 3 роки тому

      Wafts from The Loft Well, personally I and others do consider Jacques the greatest, and i could easily go on for paragraphs about why i have come to that conclusion, (although my experience with fragrance is limited, Ive only been into vintages for a few years, and I certainly have not smelled even a fraction of what is out there, but his scents are, idk, they’re almost emotionally draining, they’re melancholic and transportive. They paint a picture more than anything else I’ve smelled. For instance, Bouquet de Faunes literally smells like there is a mysterious animal with dirty fur hiding amongst a group of flowers hidden deep in the forest.) However, I think many also would also consider Francois Coty as being near the top, I’m sure there are some that consider him the greatest. No one can argue with the impact of Chypre de Coty (prob my fav fragrance of all time, besides several from Guerlain) or of L’Origan, which still smells fantastic to me, and very similar to some of the more melancholy Guerlain fragrances that followed shortly after. It is often said Coty is the pioneer of the direction perfumery went in. He’s responsible for striking a relationship with Rene Lalique to start what would become the bottling/box presentation for a perfume. He wasnt the first, but he certainly pioneered use of first available bases and synthetics, and his marketing brought perfume to many who previously probably couldnt afford it. In Roja Doves book he writes, “What he pioneered, Jacques Guerlain polished, but it is Coty who shaped and evolved the craft and is commonly known as the Father of Modern Perfumery.”
