Really informative video. Thank you very much! I have an Onan Cummins generator in my 2022 Grand Design Momentum and it has been of basically no use since it was new. As the generator has a four year warranty, I had a site visit by a Cummins tech, well five site visits. They could not figure out what was wrong with it. Finally on the last visit, they replaced the carb as they thought the choke kept shutting (I was getting code 36, unexpected shutdown). Well, I was happy that they were able to fix it. But, one week later, it starting randomly shutting off again. By this time I was not in a location that had a Onan Cummins service center. So, that is where the generator sits now - does not run for more than 45 minutes. Sometimes it's 30, sometimes 20, sometime 5 minutes. My plan is to go back to Jacksonville FL and have them look at it again. But, your tip about the vapor lock makes sense. When my gen stops, it begins to surge like it is running out of fuel. I am for sure going to get some heat shield / wrap and give that a try - thanks again!!
Awesome thanks for the comment! Hopefully this helps! If not, the follow up video will have lots of other things for you to check. Onan really under-engineered these things but they're great with a few tweaks. 😁
Hey just following up if you're still having issues! We posted a blog with the common stalling issues and a mod you can do to prevent vapor lock: www.lackeysbetrippin.com/blog/generating-inconveniences-how-to-handle-a-finicky-gasoline-onan-qg5500-generator#/
When running the generator on this or any 5th wheel would you always keep the door open on the compartment? Seems like it should be open and even have a fan blowing on it.
Hi' I have the same generator. I lost output power. 45 code. cleaned the rings. brushes are just barely 7/16 long. look good cleaned them too. with scotch pad' like the rings. I have been watching many videos and checking lots of things. pulled the board out' it looks ok. I'm going to see if Cummins can test it for me tomorrow in Bloomington IL. I thought for sur the red light would stop blinking after this. It hasn't. Any ideas. Think you.
So sorry I missed this comment sooner! Hopefully you got this figured out.
