I have to thank you! Newbies here and have this generator, that would not start. We watched your video & found that we were never shown how to prime it before starting. That can be don’t at the generator or inside our coach. BAM! ⚡️⚡️It started, thanks again!
I can't speak on the 5500, but onans microquiet 4000 can only handle about 3,500 before it starts tripping its breaker. It can handle short bursts of up to 4,000 but the engine is maxed out for sure at that wattage.
Thank you, great info. I have 2019 Onan with 150 hours, recently serviced by dealor, a 5.5 propane that is set for a 20watt output, which is not enough, how do I increase the watts. Thank you for your time.
I don’t understand how you have a 5.5 (5,500 watt) generator set at 20 watts. Even if you meant 20 amps it seems like something isn’t installed correctly.
Yes I meant 20amps, I spoke to the dealer and the tech said that something about around the back there is a way to increase the amps, I will open it up in the pass through to expose the back of the Gen. I will keep you posted, thank you for the prompt response.@@MobileRVTechServices
@@russkelley3153 there should be 2 circuit breakers that are either (2) 30 amp breakers or (1) 30 and (1) 20 amp breaker. Both of those breakers feed into the transfer switch then into the RV. There isn’t an adjustment to get more amps out. It sounds like the wiring isn’t connected properly,
Is there a way I can send you a pic of the front showing only on white strip with 20amp on it? I am far from comfortable about wiring or attempting to make this right. @@MobileRVTechServices
Great job of installation and explanation. what material did you use for the sound box and brief description of its construction to hold the weight you have on top of it. thank you
Cnovru, I built the box using 1/2” plywood and aluminum angle to connect it together at the corners and the back wall of the RV. There are 1/4” bolts connecting the angle and plywood at the corners. I used a black speaker box carpet (amzn.to/3RCrQl5) on the outside and the sound deadening with tape on the seams so the gen is sealed off my metallic material. The top shelf is plenty strong for storing things above with the plywood base. My generator system has worked out great overall. The only thing I’ve noticed is the front storage door warps with the gen heat so I’ll leave the door unlatched if it’ll be running for a long time. This is different than the green gen door that needs to stay closed for air to flow inside the gen and that air comes from the holes underneath. -Steve
Since yours is gas powered, do you have any issues with gas fumes or odor either around or inside your rv? Also where did you purchase the gas fuel container? I assume that is not included with the generator
Occasionally if the wind is at the wrong direction the fumes can come back to the RV. I have smoke/CO2 detectors in the RV so they’ll alert me if this happens. If I’ll be running it I plan out which way I park compared to the wind direction and being out in the open is always better. The fuel tank was separate from the generator and was purchased from Amazon: amzn.to/3FQoVR6
The generator is designed to breathe through the bottom. The top part is sealed and doesn’t need air flow. Although on hot days I’ll open the door to relieve some heat.
I added a piece of 1”x1” angle iron that’s 1/4” thick in the middle of the floor right next to the generator. You can see it in the underneath video/picture. That strengthened the metal much better than the way it was without the brace. -Steve
@@MobileRVTechServices great thank you, will def. look into strengthening up the floor area with some angle iron. Great videos, you have done exactly what i want to do.
If the gas tank is empty will the starter still engage and turn over the engine but will not start or is their an over ride that makes the start not engage when gas tank is empty??? I have an onan marquis 5500 the new starter spins but doesn't engage the engine
Rohan, As far as I know the starter and the fuel tank are not related. It sounds like you have a bad starter that’s not engaging. The motor should always turn over when you push start despite the gas level. -Steve
@@MobileRVTechServices that's what I know ,but was wondering, the starter is brand new both brand new starter,so the startex is seal type I. Going to bridge it and see.
Alan, I understand what you’re saying about a hot propane tank. With the casing and insulation, my setup stays cooler around it than a factory generator prep housing that’s also in the same location as the propane tanks. -Steve

That’s awesome! I’m glad your generator is working and it’s easy to do too!
Oh that generator packs some punch. 5500 running watts is powerful. The one that I have is 4500. Thank you for sharing.
You’re welcome Smalls. The 7000 watt is only a few pounds more and the same size. If you really need some power, that would be a good choice. -Steve

I am buying a new camper with one. Hope I know where to put the gas 😆

Does your box have any type of air inlet or way to breathe? Or are you just unlatching the door?

Would you install a 7000 Onan Gas Generator in a 43ft 5th wheel?
If I had the choice, yes. They are the same size. The differences are a little for fuel consumption and a few pounds heavier.
Did you need to add support on the floor and if so what did you do? Looking to do the same with a marquis 7000 generator.

How often should the oil be changed?
We change the oil and filter at 100 hours.

I wouldn't run that gen with that propane tank in there. The rapid increase in temperature can make a full propane tank vent. Ask me how I know :)
